One of the many things I find fascinating about New York City is how different it looks day and night. Honestly, I find it visually beautiful, stimulating and inspiring any time of the day, however because I am more of a night person, I think it looks exceptionally beautiful after the sun goes down.

Whether looking up or down, the contrast of the city lights against the backdrop of a dark sky is breathtaking.

I remember when I first moved to Manhattan to attend acting school back in the 70's-80's. My friends and I would often visit the observation deck of the Empire State Building (which back then was only $5.00 admission) in the evenings. And no matter how many times we visited, we would continually be in awe of the spectacular view of New York City at night.

Last week while going through the photographs I store on Dropbox, I discovered that I saved quite a few photographs I had taken in New York City this year, and even some from last year. So I decided to post my favorites, sharing my best-loved city...day and night.

Please enjoy...

I spotted this photographer taking photographs on the steps of the New York City Public Library.

A white rose placed on the 9/11 Memorial.

The Bryant Park Studios, a 1901 Landmark building designed in the Beaux-Arts style.

The infamous Macy's New York

One World Trade Center

West 34th Street rush hour traffic.

New York City at Night

These next two photographs are views from inside Central Park. I took them last October, when my brother Tom and I went to New York for three days.

Times Square

Office buildings along 6th Avenue

This final aerial (drone) shot was was taken by New York City photographer, Humza Deas, whose phenomenal talent I have just recently discovered online. In the future, I will be sharing a few of his videos - they are AMAZING!

This image perfectly fits my fantasy of being a bird and flying high above Manhattan at night, looking down at the magnificent light show below...

Have a spectacular weekend everyone!

  1. Hey Ron, I don't think I would like to be a bird flying over those buildings... it would turn my stomach!

Love the photographs, especially the one of the couple on the library steps and the one of the cream rose.

The photo of Times Square is just as I remember.... sigh! I did manage to see NY at night when I was there, it is certainly different to the daytime views. More artistic somehow, and definitely more romantic. I never managed to go in the Empire State Building, the queues were too long on both times I/we tried to go up. My one regret about Times Square is not seeing a naked man running through. I had just popped into a store while Joe waited outside. I told him off for not calling me!

Thank you so much for refreshing my memory of happy times in one of my favourite places. Enjoy your weekend, dear friend.

  2. Ah, Ron, nobody can photograph the Big Apple like you can! Beautiful work, my friend, especially the shot of the white rose at the 9/11 Memorial. It's such a heart-breaker. Love the aerial shot, but I'll skip the flying fantasy! You've got to come up here again, Ron, and yes, I know, I owe you a trip to Philly! Take care, buddy!

  3. Ron, I imagine looking through these photos again makes you all the more eager for your big move, right?!!

There's something terribly exciting about a city the size of New York. Always something going on, so much energy! It's not for me -- I'm more of a small town girl -- but I do enjoy visiting places like that and getting an injection of oomph!

As for being a bird and looking down on all those lighted buildings, no thank you. Give me terra firma and let me mingle with the masses, looking at the beautiful jewelry, the architecture, and so forth!

Hope your weekend is lovely and you miss the hurricane remnants. xo

  4. Helloooooooo there Valerie!

"Hey Ron, I don't think I would like to be a bird flying over those buildings... it would turn my stomach!"

HAHAHA! I don't normally like flying (in a plane) however if I were a bird, I wouldn't be afraid of flying or heights, so I think it would be SO AWESOME to fly high over the city and look down.

I got so lucky with the photo of the couple on the library steps because I just so happened to be walking by at the exact moment the photographer snapped several pictures. That's one of the things I love about NYC, people take pictures all the time, so when you want to snap a photograph yourself, no one cares or never even notices.

It's funny because when you actually live in New York, you don't often go to Times Square because it's soooooooooooooooo crowded with people (primarily tourists). But when you visit, it's such a great place to go because it almost feels as though it's the "heart center" of the city.

"My one regret about Times Square is not seeing a naked man running through. I had just popped into a store while Joe waited outside. I told him off for not calling me!"

OMG...how funny! About a year and half ago, I did see the Naked Cowboy and got a picture of him. I also got one of the Naked Cowgirl, but could post it on my blog because she was pretty TOPLESS and didn't want to offend anyone.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear friend. Have a glorious weekend!

  5. Hey there Rob!

Aw....thank you. You know how MUCH I love that city, so for me it's such a JOY to point my camera and shoot. There are so many incredible sites to see!

"Love the aerial shot, but I'll skip the flying fantasy! "

HAHAHAHA! It's funny because as you know, I don't like flying in plane, however if I were a bird, flying high above NYC would be such a thrill because I wouldn't be afraid. It would feel totally natural.

"I'll skip the flying fantasy! You've got to come up here again, Ron, and yes, I know, I owe you a trip to Philly!"

I will be coming up there mid-October with a few girls I work with so perhaps we could meet you for lunch. Also, I don't know if you read my post a few weeks ago, but I will moving to NYC at the end of next summer, so I'll see you more often. I can't WAIT to finally move there!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a fantastic weekend!

  6. Ron, I imagine looking through these photos again makes you all the more eager for your big move, right?!!"

You are soooooooooooo right about that, Debbie! For the past several weeks I've been watching many videos of New York, which has gotten me even more excited about my move next year. I CANNOT wait!!!!!

Yes, New York for MANY people is not a city in which they could live, so I totally understand your feelings. Most people just enjoy visiting for an injection of oomph and then leaving. Even my brother Tom said that although he really enjoyed the city, he could never live there - way too many people and too much going on.

"As for being a bird and looking down on all those lighted buildings, no thank you. Give me terra firma and let me mingle with the masses,......."

    HAHAHAHAHA!

It's funny because although I'm not fond of flying OR heights, I would LOVE to be a bird and fly over the city because a bird has no fear of flying or heights.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastical weekend!

  7. Oh, my God, Ron, I had no idea about the New York move! I'm terribly sorry about missing that post! I don't understand what happened! But I'm so happy for you because I know you've wanted to move here for the longest time! That's terrific news! Heck, maybe we'll be neighbors! Can't wait until you get here, buddy!!

  8. You sure have an eye for a great shot, Ron! I love ALL of the pictures. The white rose, so beautiful and sad . . .

Hope all is going well! XO

  9. Thank you, my friend :)

"The white rose, so beautiful and sad . . ."

I didn't think about it when I initially took the picture, but the water drops of rain look like tears. It's so bitter sweet to stand there and look at all the names within the memorial. Tomorrow will mark 16 years.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope you're having a FAB weekend!

  10. Awesome photographs, Ron! I love the first one of the Empire State Building day and night comparison. If you don't mind me asking, how did you edit that?

You're love of New York shines through your words and images!

That final aerial shot is AMAZING!

  11. Hey there Candice!

Thank you :) I made that collage on PicMonkey. I took those photographs two different times I visited the city and then edited them together.

Isn't that final picture amazing? I discovered his photographs online last month. He not only takes pictures, but also makes videos about New York and various places he's traveled. I will be sharing some in future posts.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a great Sunday!

  13. Hey Babs!

    So great to see you!!!!!!!

No, I'm not in Florida, thank god! However, my brother who lives in the West Palm Beach area drove out of the state on Wednesday and is currently in New Orleans because the hurricane was headed right up the center of Florida. He's staying there until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, just to be safe.

Thanks SO MUCH for stopping by, my friend. Hope all is well with you and Mo!

  14. What a wonderful selection of photographs, Ron! As Rob said, no one can photograph NY like you! I love the red dress the woman is wearing in the photo of the New York Public Library. And the one of the 9/11 Memorial is gorgeous. So fitting for today being the 16th anniversary. Made me teary-eyed. The shots of New York at night are gorgeous. It's funny how Times Square at night looks almost like day with all the lights, doesn't it? That final aerial shot is incredible! It doesn't even look real!

That last shot overlooking the city is incredible! WOW...what a view!

Have a wonderful week, Ron X

I hope your family in Florida is okay.

  15. Hola Denise!

I felt so emotional all day being the 16th year since 9/11. And it's strange because when I left my apartment this morning and was walking to work, I just so happened to look down at the clock on my smart phone at exactly 8:46 when the first plane hit the towers 16 years ago. Also, the weather today was exactly how it was on 9/11, a bright blue sky on a September day.

" It's funny how Times Square at night looks almost like day with all the lights, doesn't it? "

Ha! You're right, because of all the bright lights in Times Square, it always looks like daytime!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a wonderful week too!

P.S. Thank you for asking. My family and friends in Florida are all safe and sound.

  17. Thank you, Fiona :)

No, I won't be moving to NY until next summer (the end of August) because my apartment lease will be up then and I'll have this time to prepare (look for a place to live in NY and organize my job transfer to another store in Manhattan), before I go. Ooooo... and I can't wait!!!! :)

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic rest of your week!

OMG...yes...yes...yes! And energy like no other.

I remember going to NYC for the first time when I was only 14 years old and thinking, "This is where I want to live!" So I moved there when I turned 17. It's time for me to move back.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a grrrrreat week!

  20. I think I remember you sharing some of these in previous posts. Lovely representation of the great city. When are you moving there? I visited the Empire State Building on a family vacay in the 70s. Who knows, maybe we were there at the same time?! My favorite Christmas movie is the original Miracle on 34th Street (not the remake). The city if full of wonderful history. I don't normally have vertigo, but that last drone shot makes me a bit dizzy! Hope your week has gone well for you.

  21. Many great photos here! I think my favorites are the Bryant studio one because of the coloring. And I like the 1 WTC too because it looks like the branches are trying to hold each other.
Aerial shots are neat, but the videos make me dizzy. LOL
Yesterday, being the anniversary of 9/11 there were many photos posted. Some of them were still so difficult to look at, always will be I'm sure.

Hope you're having a good week!

  22. Hello there Lisa!

Some of these may look like pictures I've shared in previous posts because I post a lot about New York, however I don't think I've published any of these before.

I'm not moving there until the end of next August, when my apartment lease is up. I wanted this next year to prepare my move, such as, finding an apartment and transferring to another store in the city.

"I visited the Empire State Building on a family vacay in the 70s. Who knows, maybe we were there at the same time?!

OMG...wouldn't it be funny if we HAD been there at the same time and that our paths crossed way back in the 70's?!?!?

Yes, my favorite if the original Miracle on 34th Street as well - the one with Natalie Wood.

"I don't normally have vertigo, but that last drone shot makes me a bit dizzy! "

HA! I know...isn't that drone shot HIGH?!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaaaabulous rest of your week!

Aren't the Bryant Studios so beautiful? Yes, I love the coloring, and the architecture too.

"And I like the 1 WTC too because it looks like the branches are trying to hold each other. "

Yes, they do, you're right! I took that shot several months ago when I was down at Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.

"Yesterday, being the anniversary of 9/11 there were many photos posted. Some of them were still so difficult to look at, always will be I'm sure."

I agree, I STILL have a hard time looking the 9/11 images. I've watched several documentaries and cried my eyes out.

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! Have a fantastic rest of your week!

  24. Killer photographs, Ron! You always have a way of expressing the energy of New York City through the pictures you take. I can feeling the energy! I bet you can't wait to finally move there next year.

The finale aerial shot is incredible because even though it's a picture, you still get a strong sense of just how HIGH up it is. Wow, it literally makes you dizzy!

    Have a great weekend, dude!

  25. Hiya Matt!

    Thank you :)

New York is one of those places where all you have to do is take any picture and the energy of the city just emanates from within the image. That city LOVES to have its picture taken - ha!

You bet, I can't wait to move there next year. I've been investigating various areas and checking the prices of apartments. Like the apartment I live in now, I want something small (a studio). And although the rent prices are higher than Philadelphia, they're not as insane as I thought they'd be.

Isn't that aerial shot AMAZING? He is such a gifted photographer. I can't wait to share a few of his videos.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a grrrrrrrrrrrrreat weekend!

  26. Ron, anytime you post about the city of New York, your love and admiration is contagious because I can feel it, Outstanding photos!

The Empire State Building comparison is my favorite. But damn, I also love the nighttime shots. Beautiful, man!

I'm anticipating the pictures you share with us when you move to New York and are living there full time!

    Have a fabuloso weekend!

  27. Hey ho Robert!

    Thank you, buddy :)

Yup, can you tell how much I LOVE NYC? HA!

I took those two shot of the Empire State Building on different days. I think one (the nighttime shot) was right before Christmas of last year.

"I'm anticipating the pictures you share with us when you move to New York and are living there full time!"

I can't wait to actually live there again so that I can go to different parts of the city and share photographs. I am so excited about living there again!

Have a fabuloso weekend too, buddy. And thanks for stopping by!

  29. I love your shot of the office buildings along Sixth Avenue! Good work. I have to agree with you - there's something about seeing a city transform itself after dark that is especially beautiful. Thanks for sharing these. Yes, and being someone who loves nighttime, I think everything looks especially beautiful after dark. It's funny about darkness because you notice the lightness more.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Hope your weekend was FANTASTIC!

  35. i just love new york. look at all those people just waiting to charge the sidewalk/streets. and yes, i did look at humza's work. amazing. i thought as i watched the video, it's great being a man and being able to walk the streets of new york at night. like i want to do that, but not sure i'd want to climb so high but i do want access with a barrier so i don't fall. he had no fear! thanks for sharing.

  36. An amazing post Ron, about an amazing city! I agree with you, NYC at any time of the day is spectacular, but by night it takes on a whole new dimension!
I've been lucky enough to be on the 102nd floor observatory of the Empire State Building at twilight.. twice :-) The transition of the cityscape is just fabulous... as the lights of the city come on and night falls, it is just breathtaking!

  37. I know, isn't NY the BOMB? You and I feel so similar about that city because we see the same things; knowing what an INCREDIBLE city it is!

"look at all those people just waiting to charge the sidewalk/streets."

It's like a wall of a people waiting to cross the street!

So glad to hear that you took a look at Humza's work, I knew you would love it. I subscribed to his You Tube channel, where he updates video every week.

" like i want to do that, but not sure i'd want to climb so high but i do want access with a barrier so i don't fall. he had no fear! "

OMG, can you believe how fearless he is in climbing so high on buildings and bridges?? Yet, he gets some of the BEST shots I've ever seen of New York. He's freakin' amazing!

"I've been lucky enough to be on the 102nd floor observatory of the Empire State Building at twilight.. twice :-) The transition of the cityscape is just fabulous... as the lights of the city come on and night falls, it is just breathtaking!"

Oh, how AWESOME! Isn't the view from the Empire State Building incredible at night? I am going to NYC next month and hoping to visit the Top of the Rock. I've never been, yet the view (from pictures I've seen) looks mind blowing because it's directly in the center of the city so you can see all of Lower Manhattan and Upper Manhattan. You also get a great view of Central Park!
