Post updates by email:

Ever since making my decision last year to leave Philadelphia and move back to New York, I've been presented with certain life lessons.

Now mind you, I've been presented with these same life lessons many times before whenever I have decided to make a big change in my life, or even while going through a challenging experience in which I needed to trust that everything would be presented to me at the exact time I needed it to move through the change or the challenge.

I truly believe that I came into this world with specific lessons to learn, and it is through my own life scenarios that I am taught these lessons.

Today I would like to share with you, one of those lessons...

Remaining Open and Adaptable:

Isn't funny that no matter how carefully we plan something, it never goes exactly as planned?

And have you also noticed that life is constantly calling upon us to be adaptable?

Well, these are things that I have once again been reminded of as I've been planning and preparing to make my move to New York.

However, the only difference is that this time I've been trying to remain more consciously aware of the things that have not been planned, those things that have been presented to me as different options and then embracing those options instead of staying stubborn in how I envisioned every aspect of this move to pan out. And do you know what? In doing that, things seem to be naturally falling into place without any frustration to control them.

I genuinely feel extremely relaxed about this change in my life; not at all fearful, but rather excited.

One of the most important things I'm learning about planning is to, yes, make plans and choices, but then throw those plans and choices out into the Universe and see which ones come back to you; remaining open and adaptable because you don't always know what's best. What you initially preconceived as the best path, so often redirects you on a different route. What may seem like a detour or a dead end, ends up being a better direction.

Example:

The store that I had originally wanted to transfer to in New York never even made an attempt to contact me after I sent them my application. And this was a store that I've been wanting to transfer to since last year, so I wanted it badly. It was the store that I had strongly envision myself in, so it was the store I had my heart set on.

However, another one of our stores I applied to that was in a different location in Manhattan, contacted me the very next day and asked if I could come to New York for an interview, which I did. And while I was there in the midst my interview, I suddenly realized that that store would be a much better match for me, and then wondered why I didn't think of it myself. The interview went well, they seemed to like me and I liked them. Things just seemed to click.

And lo and behold, a few days ago I got an email from them saying that my transfer was approved for a full-time position in their store. Yes, I was very happy!

So you see, it all worked out for the best, even though it wasn't something that "I" had planned, but rather something that was planned "for" me.

Now, the next thing I need to do is find a place to live in New York, which I will be doing this month and next. I've been looking at different areas, but plan on staying open to the unplanned.

As I shared at the start of this post, everything about this move seems to be naturally falling into place.

My part is to just keep reminding myself to remain open and adaptable.

Because I have a feeling that I'll find the perfect apartment where I least expect it....

Yes....I'll be sure to keep you all posted!

Have a super week, everyone!

So glad to hear that the unexpected is the perfect choice of store!

  2. Ooooh, isn't it exciting.

'Being Ron', I know you will share with us every step of the way. I am delighted that things are falling into place for you and congratulations on the job front. Whilst moving is exciting, the many tasks you have to perform before getting to that stage can be monumental. I know you will handle it all without too much brain hassle. Plain sailing, remember that expression? .... it's one that I used to calm me whenever Joe and I relocated.

  4. Hey there Valerie!

" Plain sailing, remember that expression? .... it's one that I used to calm me whenever Joe and I relocated."

    Yes, and I LOVE it!!!

I will share things as my move gets closer. Gosh, and can't believe it's only TWO MONTHS away!!!!! I've been slowly planning for this move since last year, so I've taken my time to do things gradually. I've been streamlining my belongings so that I have as minimal as possible to transport. I've told my apartment complex that I'll be moving out in Sept and already booked the freight elevator when I actually move. I've also got the moving truck booked for September.

I wanted to get all that stuff done so that all I have to concentrate on is finding an apartment these next two months.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaaaabulous rest of your week!

    X to you and Charlie

  5. "Isn't funny that no matter how carefully we plan something, it never goes exactly as planned?"

YES! And it's funny, Ron - I wrote the same thing in my blog regarding the move. Despite a full year's worth of planning, when we finally hit the road things didn't happen exactly as expected. But so much of that is beyond your control, such as our very rainy drive through Montana, that you'll lose your sanity if you don't just go with the flow. Sounds like you've got the right attitude about your upcoming adventure. You'll do fine!

And CONGRATULATIONS on the job transfer! See? You're one step ahead of me in that department. How exciting!

Now, go find that perfect apartment!

And have a happy 4th of July!!

  6. Thanks for sharing this, Ron. It's nice to hear what's been happening with your big move. I love what you've said about being open to the unplanned. I have found this to be true in my life in relationships, career, and money. Sometimes a loss really does turn into a gain. We are often so upset when things don't go as planned, but if we are patient, something better is often just around the corner.

I'm very excited to hear how everything goes with your apartment hunting. Hope you have a really nice holiday! XO

  7. Hey there Mark!

Yes! I totally remember you saying that same thing in a post you shared not too long ago, which at that time, I mentioned in my comment that I had a post I wanted to share about that same topic.

"But so much of that is beyond your control, such as our very rainy drive through Montana, that you'll lose your sanity if you don't just go with the flow."

I LOVE how you said that because it's spot on. There comes a point in our planning that we simply have to just go with it and adapt to how it goes, even though it might not be as we planned. When I moved from Florida to Philly in 2001, I had (much like you and Tara) a very challenging ride, where a lot of unexpected shit happened.

Thanks. I was so happy to receive word that my transfer had been approve for full-time because that was very important for me. They are also giving me a higher hourly salary than I make in Philly, which I'm grateful for because NYC is more expensive to live.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend, and for your encouraging words. I am sooooooooo happy for you and Tara. BRAVO on your move!

    Happy 4th of July!

    X to you and Tara

  8. Hey there Bijoux!

I wanted to wait until I got word about my transfer before I shared more about my move. It was up in the air for awhile about which store I'd be working at, so I was very happy to get final get some clarity. Now that that is finalized, I can focus on finding a place to live. And I have a feeling it will happen quickly. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated when it happens.

"Sometimes a loss really does turn into a gain. We are often so upset when things don't go as planned, but if we are patient, something better is often just around the corner."

A-MEN! You are sooooooooooooo right about that! I'm finally at a point in my life where I'm not struggling when things don't go as planned and remaining patient; seeing what comes to me that is better.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your support, my friend. Wishing you and your family a Happy 4th of July holiday!

  9. Ron, what an inspiring post! "What you initially preconceived as the best path, so often redirects you on a different route. What may seem like a detour or a dead end, ends up being a better direction."
That is so true. Many in my life I've run up against what I thought looked like a dead end or detour, but ended up being a much better way.

I am so happy to read about your job. I look forward to hearing more about finding your apartment. I just know that everything will work out for you!

  10. Hello Candice!

Isn't it something how that when we look back on our lives, we see how many times we've gone through this and struggled with it? For me, this time I decided to change the way I perceived it and embrace the detours, which ended up being the best for me.

I've been doing some packing today because I don't want to save it until the last minute. I want to use these last two months to finding an apartment. I want to move with minimal as possible.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great week. And Happy 4th of July!

  11. Great to hear, Ron! I totally love your attitude because I've had problems when things don't go according to plan.

If I'm not careful, I'll get thrown off and fearful, so reading how you're adapting to whatever life is sending your way is most encouraging.

As far places to live, Bay Ridge, my neighborhood in Brooklyn is said to be one the last affordable places in town, and there also parts of Queens. Or maybe you'll land some fabulous apartment in Manhattan. I certainly hope so.

Can't wait until you get here, buddy!

    Take care!

  12. Ron, I always learn things from you, like your attitude and perspective about life. Everything you said here is so true. Whenever I have forced things to go a certain way, resisting opportunities that just came my way naturally, there was always some kind of issue. Like you I'm slowly learning how to go with the flow because things DO seem to work out for the best.

Looking forward to hearing more about your move, dude!

  13. "Isn't funny that no matter how carefully we plan something, it never goes exactly as planned? And have you also noticed that life is constantly calling upon us to be adaptable?" Oh Ron, as soon as I read those two sentences I immediately started nodding my head and saying, yes, yes, YES! This post couldn't have come at a better time because I'm going through something right now and REALLY needed to read your words, which reaffirmed what I already knew, but kept resisting. All the right signs I needed for making a decision have been there, but I've been avoiding them because it's not what I "think" I want.

So thank you, Ron. I so needed to hear you insight.

And I am soooo excited for your move back to your favorite city, NEW YORK! I just know you'll find the perfect place to live, I just know it!

  14. Congrats on the approval of your transfer request, Ron! And yes, I'm certain you'll find the right place to live when you get to NYC!

I think that too often, we try to wrestle things into shape the way we want them, never realizing that sometimes it's best to go with the flow. For me, this comes down to faith and trust -- faith that there's a Power bigger than I am and trust that that Power is more capable than I am to manage things.

Love how you said this ------ "life is constantly calling upon us to be adaptable." It is, and we're never too old to adapt, are we?

    Happy week ahead! xx

  15. Hi Ron! I'm so happy to hear that things are going well. Especially with the "new" store.
My granny used to tell us something close to this; "nothing is guaranteed, and you never know how many forks in the road life will put in front of you. It doesn't matter though, because if you are open minded and flexible, it doesn't matter which fork you take, because happiness can found on all of them." I think I butchered that, but you get the gist, right?

  16. Hey there Rob!

I think we ALL at one time or another have had problems when things don't go as planned. It can be frustrating and scary. Yet, I'm learning to let go more and just go with opportunities that come my way because I can see that they were actually better choices than the ones I had thought.

Thanks so much for the recommendations. And yes, I will definitely check them out. I will be taking five days at the end of the month and part of August to come to NY and look at apartments.

Can't wait until I get there too!!!!!!!

Have a great rest of your week, buddy!

That's GREAT to hear! And yes, I'm slowing learning to go with the flow too. It just seems to be an easier (and mentally healthier) way to go through life.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a FAB week!'

Yes, you are spot on in sharing about the "signs" because I notice the same thing. So if we stay " a tuned and aware" of the little signs, all we need to do is just follow them!

Hope all is going well with your decision, girl.

Thank you. And yeah, I'll keep you guys posted on the apartment. I will be going into the city at the end of the July, beginning of August to look at apartments.

Have a fab rest of your week!!

  19. Aw....thank you, Debbie! I was so happy to get the email saying that my transfer had been approve. And I have a feeling that I'm REALLY going to enjoy the area of the city where the store is located. It's such a cool area. And I'll be sharing about where that area is in future posts.

"I think that too often, we try to wrestle things into shape the way we want them, never realizing that sometimes it's best to go with the flow. 21. Ron, what a wonderful and insightful post! As Debbie shared in her comment, "Love how you said this ------ "life is constantly calling upon us to be adaptable." It is, and we're never too old to adapt, are we?" I agree, we are never too old to adapt. In fact, I think it gets a bit easier as we get older.

I am so happy that things are going well for you and that you got the transfer. I bet you were jumping for joy when you heard the news. And I have a feeling that you'll find the perfect apartment to live as well. Things are falling into place for sure.

    Keep us updated, Ron!

And on another note, can you believe the heatwave we're having? It's so hot that I can't even muster the energy to go outside. My husband and I have done nothing but stay inside and hibernate all week. It's just too hot.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Helloooooo there Elaine!

I think you're right, it DOES get easier as we get older. It's like we finally learn the lesson to go with the flow and adapt to whatever is happening. I think it makes life so less stressful.

Thank you :) Yes, I was VERY happy when I got the news about the transfer. I am so looking forward to the move and changes in my life. I'm at a point where I need change. And New York is a city where I always feel so inspired to move, learn, and grow.

OMG... can you BELIEVE the freaking heatwave? We got a little break over the weekend, but today it went right back to the severe heat. I had off today and ran some errands. When I got home, I had to take another shower because I was dripping in sweat. I was sweating so bad that my clothes were wet.

God, I can't wait for FALL!!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor. Stay cool!

  28. My life mantra goes like this: We plan, God laughs, We adjust. I believe everyone has a purpose in life, and our choices (good and bad) become part of that journey. The exact path of that journey will take is rarely ever shared with us so your attitude about being adaptable and flexible can make the trip more enjoyable! I don't believe in coincidences. In my life, what appears to be random acts and chance meetings are very purposeful in some way. I love your positive attitude and wish you all the best in apartment hunting!

Yes...yes...yes! LOVE that, Lisa! And this is exactly how I perceive life as well. And although I am not attached to any particular religion, I DO believe in God and know that my life is a co-creation with God; therefore I must remain adaptable and flexible in what is presented to me because I see those as "God Winks" that guide me along my path.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, my friend. Really appreciate it!

And thank you for your encouragement!

  31. I needed these words Ron and right now more than ever.
I made a big change in my life few months ago after an unwelcome event.
I pray to God this all work out for me in the long term.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you

  32. Hey there Jaffer!

    So GREAT to see you!

I have discovered that often times unwelcome events (as scary as some of them may be) occur in our lives as wake-up calls that force us to make changes for the betterment of our lives. And as unsettling as some of these events are, I have ALWAYS discovered that I needed them to move forward.

So keep the faith, my friend. Every thing happens for a reason. And that there is no such thing as mistakes.

Thanks so much for stopping by! The BEST to you!
