Post updates by email:

Earlier this week I went to New York City to capture Autumn in Central Park. And think because of the bipolar weather we've been experiencing here in the Northeast, this hasn't been (so far, anyway) an Autumn with TONS of color.

However two days before I went, we did get a cold snap. So, I was hoping to get some colorful shots of what New York City trees are wearing this Autumn. And I have to say, the fashion show was quite beautiful. And the weather couldn't have been more glorious. It was in the low 50's, and the sun was shinning brightly. To me, it felt heavenly!

I was in the city for almost nine hours and spent the better part of that time walking through Central Park. I started at the 59th Street entrance, and ended up traveling as far as West 80th Street. I know that sounds like a long walk, but when you're inside the park looking around at all the beautiful foliage, it didn't seem like a long walk at all. Besides, whenever I'm in New York City, all I ever want to do is walk.

Allow me to start by saying that I couldn't help myself, but this post is heavy with photos. I had so much fun that day, I wanted to share it all with you.

So, please enjoy an Autumn walk through New York's Central Park...

A Central Park classic--a horse and buggy ride...

What's really amazing about Central Park is that there are areas (such as the ones below) that make you think you're out in the woods in the country, far, far away from a city...

I know I've shared photos of this NYC landmark before, but it's my favorite in Central Park. And it's also a place that looks exceptionally beautiful in Autumn because of the trees that surround it. As I've said before, this place feels very sacred to me.

This next image makes you think you're some place in Vermont, doesn't it?...

Please don't let this next photograph scare you into thinking that this man is dead. He's not. He's just taking a nap and I sneakingly captured it without him knowing it. Aren't I evil?...

These next several pictures are as I walked closer to Bow Bridge on the Upper West Side of Central Park. I LOVE this building!

It's called, The Eldorado..

This is a closeup of the two towers from the street level...

Bow Bridge...

As I was walking across the bridge, I spotted a bride and groom having their wedding pictures taken...

The gentleman in the middle was the minister who performed the ceremony. As I walked past them, I could hear him talking about marriage...

I found this adorable little squirrel eating something. I tried to get him/her to turn around, but was ignored. I snapped the picture anyway...

Hope you enjoyed Autumn in New York City's Central Park...

Have a beautiful week, everyone!

  1. Ron - your photos are absolutely glorious!! Thank you for taking us along on your day in the park. It's almost unbelievable that such a quaint, diverse refuge of nature is located in the middle of a mega city!

It's impossible to chose favorite photos, but I love the Angel of the Waters, the Eldorado, and, of course, the squirrel. Some of the scenes really do look like they could be in Vermont.

I've never been to Central Park in the autumn, but I remember being there in June and walking through the park barefooted! Of course I was a little younger and a lot more foolish. I'd never do that now.

Thanks for an enjoyable autumnal post!

  2. Thanks for sharing these photos, Ron. Please do NOT ask me which photograph I liked best.... they are all brilliant. I like the capture of the napping guy on the bench and I shivered to think of the bride with no fur coat! Autumn in the park is something I envy. Finally I can admit that foliage in my home town is finally showing it's autumn colours. Better late than never!

  3. Oh, what beautiful photos, Ron!

You really bring to fall to life in these images and you show people--even lifelong New Yorkers--a side of Central Park they've never seen.

The wedding, the El Dorado, even that last shot of the single leaf on the bench--they were all so beautifully composed. Terrific work!

I get the walking thing, too--New York was built to be walked through and Central Park is one of the best places to do that very thing.

My niece from California used to complain about all the walking we did during her visit, but I told her, "this is New York, kid, everything is a coupla blocks away--even if its Montreal!"

And here's a little theme music for your post: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong singing "Autumn in New York"--enjoy!

Take care, buddy, and have a great weekend!

  4. Ron, all these pics are stunning! You really captured Autumn in NYC perfectly! I've been to Central Park twice on my visits and like you said, it's amazing how many beautiful areas make you think you're in some place other than a city. In fact, you wouldn't even know it unless you looked up and saw the skyscrapers. I never realized at first how big Central Park was and how much space it takes in Manhattan. It's HUGE!

LOVE the shot you got of the sleeping man!

  5. OMG, these are some of your most colorful photos ever! You captured Autumn beautifully! I remember my first time in Central Park being late October (I remember because we went to the NY Marathon that year) and it was stunning. I've not been to the rock ledges area or seen the stone door, but I LOVE those pictures. The last picture is truly a work of art. I'm glad you had such a great day in your favorite city!

  6. He's either taking a nap or catching flies, lol. I don't know how anybody can relax so thoroughly in public. I'd be way too self-conscious myself.

It always amazes me just how "wild" parts of Central Park look. You would never know you're in the middle of the most populated city in the U.S. Really wish I'd gone there last time I was in NYC (22 years ago - wow). I keep saying it: one of these days!

Fantastic pics, as always. The colors are stunning! Fingers crossed you get snow soon.

  7. Aw, thank you, Jon! :)

"It's almost unbelievable that such a quaint, diverse refuge of nature is located in the middle of a mega city!"

Yes, I know! It's unfathomable that when you're deep inside Central Park, there's a mage city that surrounds it.

Bethesda Terrace/Fountain will always be my favorite spot in Central Park because it's just so special. And so many movies have been shot there because it's so gorgeous and looks stunning in films.

When I live in NYC my partner and I had an apartment on E 65th Street and 5th Avenue, which is directly across the street from Central Park. We used to LOVE walking through the park during all the season because it had a completely different "feel" each season.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic rest of your week!

  8. Wowza! Those are stunning captures. I was hoping you would post Autumn shots soon. And, you didn't disappoint! I giggled at the man taking the nap. But, I simply cannot pick a favorite. Our color isn't very grand this year. A few pops here and there, but nothing like in years past. Happy you had a fantastic time in NYC. Thanks for sharing it with us, my friend.

  9. Thank you, Valerie! :)

I had so much fun spending the day in NYC, walking through Central Park, and taking these pictures.

"and I shivered to think of the bride with no fur coat! "

HA! I know, I was thinking the same thing when I spotted her standing there. At least it was a time of the day when the sun was shinning directly on us for warmth.

Glad to hear that your home town is showing its Autumn colors! Doesn't it feel magical? I love this time of year.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a lovely weekend!

  10. Thank you, Candice! :)

Isn't Autumn in Central Park the BEST?!?!? It's almost as though it's a peacock; strutting it's colorful clothes!

"...it's amazing how many beautiful areas make you think you're in some place other than a city. In fact, you wouldn't even know it unless you looked up and saw the skyscrapers."

Yes, exactly! And I even discovered areas that I had not ever seen before, which totally blew my mind because as I was standing there, I actually forgot that I was in New York City!

I know, it's HUGE! It's 840 acres, can you believe that?

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful weekend!

  11. Aw, thank you, my friend :)

I was sooooooo hoping to capture some Autumn color while I was there and was happy to see that it didn't let me down. I have a feeling that the color will get even more intense in the next few weeks as it gets colder.

"I remember my first time in Central Park being late October (I remember because we went to the NY Marathon that year) and it was stunning. "

That's AWESOME! Yup...October and Nov are my favorite months in Central Park. I also enjoy the winter months as well because the park takes on a beautiful barrenness And then when it snows, it takes on a whole other look and feel.

The rock ledges and the stone door are in an area deep within the center of the park, around 72nd/73rd streets. It's beautiful!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a faaaaaabulous weekend!

HAHAHAHA! Mark, that cracked me up! And you're right, I too would way too self-conscious to fall asleep in public. Not unless I was at the beach, lying on a beach towel, and on my back with my eyes already closed.

"t always amazes me just how "wild" parts of Central Park look. You would never know you're in the middle of the most populated city in the U.S.

I know, doesn't that blow your mind? Even me, someone who has lived there and visits often, it's hard to fathom that two things are going on simultaneously ---- city life and wildlife --- in the same place.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaabulous weekend!

    X to you and Tara

P.S. OMG...we might be getting some snow this weekend and some early next week as well. And you KNOW how EXCITED I am!!!!

  13. Thank you, Lisa :)

I initially was going to share photos of Autumn in Philadelphia like I did last year. However, I suddenly got the idea of holding off until I went to NYC this month and take pictures in Central Park. So glad I following my intuition because it was such glorious day!

"I giggled at the man taking the nap.

Tee-hee! I know, aren't I evil? However, I wasn't the only one taking pictures of him because after watching me, several other people snapped pictures of him as well.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a glorious weekend!

  14. Aw...thank you, Rob!

And thank you too for sharing the link to that song with Ella and Louis. I LOVED it! I wish I had discovered that myself because I would have added it to the end of this post because it's the perfect song!

Isn't The El Dorado such an amazing piece of architecture? It's such an iconic New York City building!

"My niece from California used to complain about all the walking we did during her visit, but I told her, "this is New York, kid, everything is a coupla blocks away--even if its Montreal!"

    HA! I loved that!

OMG, when my younger brother came to visit me two years ago and we were in NYC, he complained about the same thing. He kept suggesting we take a cab or an Uber. I said, "No way, bro, this is a city where you walk!"

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a most excellent weekend!

  15. Ron, with each passing year that I've been reading your blog, your photos just keep getting more and more impressive. The photographs in this post are amazing! The colors are incredible. No kidding, dude, these pics are some of your best work.

The photograph of that guy sleeping is priceless! And I love the one looking through the window. You always make New York look and sound as special as I know it is. What an advocate you are for the Big Apple.

    Well done!

  16. Matt, thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words :)

What I've always enjoyed about photography is the process of learning. The more you do it, the more aware you become of how to use the camera. I've always (even since I was a kid) had an interest in photography. I LOVE pictures!

Isn't the guy sitting on the park bench cute? I couldn't resist snapping his picture. But I wasn't the only one because several people walking by took his picture as well.

New York always inspires me with creative energy. Therefore, whenever I'm there, I feel as though my eyes notice everything I see 100%. It's such an incredible city for taking pictures.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a most excellent weekend!

  18. Yes, Fiona, I had a FAN-tastic day walking through all that Central Park foliage. I felt like a wide-eyed little kid!

So happy that we finally got a real Autumn!

  19. Ron, what spectacular photos!! No wonder NYC is so good for you, with all that healthy walking outdoors!

My favs are probably the Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace and Fountain (and that wonderful angel!), the bride and groom, the darling squirrel, and that man so relaxed he could sleep upright on a park bench! Not evil at all, my friend -- maybe just a wee bit sneaky but I'm delighted at the result (and something tells me he would be, too, ha!)

Isn't it great that, despite the weather, the trees put on their glorious Fall frocks? And I'll bet if you went back a week or so later, you'd see even more colors. Say, what a good idea -- you'd like another trip to the city, wouldn't you??!

    Happy weekend to you! xo

  20. Aw...thank you, Debbie! :) New York is one of those cities that just BEGS to be photograph because it knows how fabulous it is. Ha! And yes, one of the primary things I love about NYC and any city, is the walking. I LOVE to walk! And especially NYC because it's so big, and there is so much to see.

"...and that man so relaxed he could sleep upright on a park bench! Not evil at all, my friend -- maybe just a wee bit sneaky but I'm delighted at the result...."

I just couldn't resist. And there were several other people snapping photos of him as well. His whole "look" was so cute that you just resist capturing it.

"Isn't it great that, despite the weather, the trees put on their glorious Fall frocks? "

Yes, it is. And you're right, if I went back, say, next week or the following, I'm sure the colors would be even more impressive. I may try to get there again the last week in Nov., but if that doesn't work out, I'll definitely be going back in early Dec. to catch all the Christmas extravaganza that NYC is famous for. So stay tuned.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Happy weekend to you too! xo

P.S. I'm so excited because snow is in the forecast for this weekend and early next week!

  21. Such a beautiful time of year. We went for a long walk today and I was loving the fall colors.

Gorgeous photos, but my favorite may be the single leaf on the bench.

  23. Ron, as a native New Yorker, you captured the beauty of Autumn in Central Park perfectly! That's one of the major things I miss about living in the Northeast, AUTUMN! It's just not the same here in Florida.

You're photographs are spectacular! Isn't Central Park incredible? It's hard to imagine that your're in a city when you are walking through the park because not only is it beautiful, but also so big.

Love the picture of the guy sleeping, Ron! What a great candid capture!

I do hope you'll be going back to New York City as the Christmas holidays approach because I want to see all the decorations!

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron xo

  25. Hola Denise!

Thank you :) And I know what you mean because when I first moved back to the Northeast the first thing that dawned on me was how much I missed Autumn! And not only Autumn, but the seasons in general.

"It's hard to imagine that your're in a city when you are walking through the park because not only is it beautiful, but also so big."

Incredible, isn't it? It's like two different worlds withing one world.

"It's hard to imagine that your're in a city when you are walking through the park because not only is it beautiful, but also so big."

Yes, I will definitely be going back before Christmas because I want to take pictures of all the Christmas decorations in NYC. Also, Winter in New York!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a fantastic rest of your weekend!

  26. Ron, your photographs in Central Park are stunning! You really should be an ambassador of good will for New York City because I can tell how much love and passion you have for that city. And I don't blame you because I feel the same way.

  28. Autumn in New York is obviously gorgeous... you captured it perfectly!
The path/leaves by the rocks photo is real nice. The reflection of buildings/trees in the water, lovely! The Eldorado shot is very cool. Alec Baldwin used to own a couple units there but sold them for a good bit of $$$. The squirrel must have been shy. Cute!!

  29. Hey there Mary!

Don't ya' just LOVE Autumn in the Northeast? There are some incredible areas in Central Park (such as the path/leaves by the rocks) that make you forget you're in a city as big as New York.

"Alec Baldwin used to own a couple units there but sold them for a good bit of $$$."

OMG, I didn't know that!? And I can ONLY IMAGINE how much he sold them for. That's like the units in the Dakota -- when I lived in NYC they were very inexpensive. However, when they began selling them, the prices went sky high.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you had a great weekend, and that you're feeling better.
