You know, to be honest, I can't recall exactly how I discovered the amazing talent of photographer, Steve McCurry. But when I did...I immediately knew that I wanted to feature him on my blog and share some of his truly remarkable images.

And ironically enough, after doing some research on McCurry, I discovered that he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and went to Penn State University.

Here are some fascinating facts I discovered about this very gifted man:

-Steve McCurry is an American photographer, freelancer and photojournalist. His photo "Afghan Girl", of a girl with piercing green eyes, has appeared on the cover of National Geographic several times.

-He originally planned to study cinematography and filmmaking, but instead gained a degree in theater arts and graduated in 1974. He became interested in photography when he started taking pictures for the Penn State newspaper The Daily Collegian.

-After a year working in India, McCurry traveled to northern Pakistan where he met two Afghans who told him about the war across the border in Afghanistan.

-His career was launched when, disguised in Afghani garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled areas of Afghanistan just before the Soviet invasion. "As soon as I crossed the border, I came across about 40 houses and a few schools that were just bombed out," he says. He left with rolls of film sewn into his turban and stuffed in his socks and underwear. Those images were subsequently published by The New York Times.

-There have been a couple of dangerous moments where McCurry came close to losing his life. He was almost drowned in India and he survived an airplane crash in Yugoslavia. McCurry has had his work featured in magazines worldwide and he is a frequent contributor to National Geographic.

Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, I give you....Steve McCurry!

( His photo "Afghan Girl")

On September 10, 2001, McCurry had just gotten back from Tibet. The morning of September 11, McCurry received a call saying the World Trade Center was on fire. He went up to the roof of his building and started taking photographs, he didn't know it was a plane that hit the towers. McCurry was on the roof when both of the towers fell, "they were just gone. It didn’t seem possible. Like you’re seeing something but you don’t really believe what you’re seeing."

Notice his incredible eye for capturing color.

This final one I find completely mesmerizing.

Look at those beautiful eyes. You can see her soul...

Have a beautiful weekend, everyone!

I am stumped. Ron, there are no words to describe my amazement or the pleasure gained from looking at this guy's work. Amazing and incredibly beautiful. Going back for another look.

  3. Lovely. His photos are works of art. It's as if you are part of the scene and watching it live. I did not know that the Afghan Girl photo was that old (thought it was more like 20 years ago). The camel photo is sad but beautiful. My favorite is the monks in the rain.

  5. His work is stunning! I love the use of color and attention to detail. I'd pick a favorite, but that's impossible - at least half a dozen rank up there for me. Thanks for featuring his work, Ron. And I hope you have a great weekend!

His other work is equally stunning, and you're so right about his eye for capturing color--these images are stunning. (I love the geisha/kabuki actor on the subway!)

  7. Thank you, Ron, for introducing us to Steve McCurry. Wow, what a gift he has! I remember seeing that National Geographic cover and being completely blown away. Thanks for giving us a closeup of those fascinating eyes!

I love the shot of the boy with his bull (?) and the birds in the background, as well as the boy with the elephant. And you're right -- he has such a good eye for color!

  8. Ron, I really enjoy when you highlight the work of other photographers because they are always so good. WOW...these photos are a-mazing! What really impresses me about Steve is his eye and his composition. And yes, you can tell he has a love of colors because they pop off the images. My faves are the boy and elephant, the camels, the women all in red, and guy wearing green being carried by the guys in red.

Once again, dude, great featured post!

  11. Yes, exactly...."works of art!" And I love how you expressed this because it's so true..." It's as if you are part of the scene and watching it live. "

I know, can you believe the Afgan Girl dates back to the 80's!?! I remember seeing it so many times on National Geographic back then, but never really taking a good look at it until now. It's such an iconic image.

LOVE the one of the monks in the rain as well. Don't you love the colors? And their reflection in the rain puddles?

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a glorious weekend. I heard the weather is supposed to be delightful!

  13. Isn't it Mark? I can't for the life of me recall where I first spotted his work, but when I did...I was like, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

His use of color and attention to detail is superb!

I know, I had a very difficult time selecting just these images because they're ALL faaaaaaabulous! I could have probably posted 50 and it still wouldn't have been enough.

Hope you have a great weekend too, my friend. And thanks a bunch for stopping by!

    X to you and Tara

"I remember seeing that National Geographic cover and being completely blown away. "

Me too! I've seen it like a million times before but never knew who took that photograph. That shot is iconic!

"I love the shot of the boy with his bull (?) and the birds in the background, as well as the boy with the elephant."

Yes, I love them as well; especially the one of the elephant and boy because it looks as though the elephant is almost mimicking the boy's body language and emotion.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Happy weekend to you as well!

  16. Thanks, Matt. Glad to hear you enjoy these posts because I LOVE sharing them. I love to highlight the talents of such creative people; especially photographers.

"What really impresses me about Steve is his eye and his composition. And yes, you can tell he has a love of colors because they pop off the images."

YES....his eye and sense of composition are astounding! And I love how in many of his images you'll see a POP color in an otherwise non-colorful image.

"and the guy wearing green being carried by the guys in red."

Isn't that the COOLEST shot? It almost looks as though he painting it!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a most excellent weekend!

  17. Amazing images, Ron. What a talent! I collect anything elephant themed so I really love the one of the boy in the tree with the elephant. What a stunning photo. I've seen the Afghan Girl photo before because many years ago I had a subscription to National Geographic and kept them all on a bookshelf specifically to store all the issues. I also had encyclopedia's. Remember those? LOL!

That last photo of the young girl is exquisite. What a beauty!

    Have a great weekend, neighbor!

  18. Oh my god, Ron, these are stunning! One more beautiful than the next. The one of the 9/11 broke my heart because whenever I see images of that day, I remember how devastated I was. I know it was 19 years ago, but it feels like yesterday. I think I remember seeing that picture in a magazine. You're right, he has such an eye for capturing color, especially reds.

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron ox

  19. Hola Denise!

I agree...one more beautiful than the next. Which is why I found it so challenging to select just these.

I know, me too, the one of 9/11 broke my heart as well. He was living in Jersey at that time and saw everything happening from the roof of his apartment, can you believe that?

Yes, you can tell he LOVES red.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a wonderful weekend as well!

  20. "I collect anything elephant themed so I really love the one of the boy in the tree with the elephant. What a stunning photo. "

Elaine, it's so funny you mentioned that because I knew of one other person who also collected all things having to do with elephants. She loves elephants and feels that they are a very special animal.

" I also had encyclopedia's. Remember those? LOL!"

HA! OMG, yes! I very much remember those! In fact, my family had an entire collection. My mother bought them each month until she had them all A-Z

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! Have a faaaaaaantastic weekend!
