Along with my love of photographing bridges, I also have a passion for photographing doors and windows. I actually follow several photographers on Instagram and Flickr who only post photos of doors and windows, and they are stunning!

I too have posted window and door photographs on my blog, however, it's been awhile. So, today I thought I'd share some of my favorite window photos that I took over the past 4-5 months.

What I especially like about city windows is their diversity - some look modern and pristine, others look aged and gritty Yet to me, they all have a unique beauty and personality unto themselves.

There are some days while walking down the street, I will constantly look up at all the windows on the buildings that surround me, hoping to discover ones that I haven't already seen. You'd be surprised how many city dwellers forget to look up after living in a city for so long because they become immune to what's around them. They just gradually take it for granted. But I think because my eyes are always looking for interesting images to photograph, they are invariably looking up, down, and all around.

Please enjoy some of Philadelphia's city windows...

This one is for my longtime blogging friend, Debbie, because I know how much you love fire escapes. LOL!

Isn't this the coolest flower shop window display?...

Notice the little doggie in the window. I saw him/her standing there, so I whistled, which caused him/her to look at me and then I snapped several photos. I got lucky with this one...

This restaurant, Amada, is always packed...

The Book Trader in Old City...

Alleyway windows...

This is another one I got lucky with, capturing that pigeon in the window. If I hadn't been looking up, I would have never seen it...

This apartment building is down on the waterfront...

I spotted this quote online and loved it...

Thanks so much for taking this window tour, everyone! 💗

  1. Y'know, I've never taken time to actually stop and photograph doors/windows...but, perfect composition (such as yours today), are works of art!! Love the doggie in the window & pigeon you spotted... But, that fire escape is one if it could talk, could write a book of stories, I'm sure!! Well done Ron, well done.

  2. Ron, these are all GORGEOUS! I love the color you captured in the first one, and that last one with all the windows is remarkable. The doggie and pigeon shots are really great too. You have such great eye for capturing such interesting images. I wish I saw things like you do. I need to look UP more!

That large shoe with the flowers is so creative!

    Well done, Ron!

  3. Great captures, Ron! I love how bright white that first fire escape is. Looks brand new! I also love the frames around the windows in the first photo. In our old neighborhood, someone redid the siding on their house and had contrasting frames like that put around their windows in their colonial and it looked fabulous! Really makes the windows pop! I love the flower pump! Is that a permanent display?? The last photo is great, too. I love to live in a place with lots of natural light. Makes a huge difference on my mood. Hope you’re having a wonderful week!

  4. Ron, my heart is in my throat just looking at that fire escape ... and you KNEW that and remembered!! I cannot imagine having to go down such a thing (up either, for that matter!). I guess the firemen would just have to blindfold me and PUSH me, ha!

What great photos you've captured, my friend. Isn't it funny how people "up high" never stop to think about what their windows look like to those on the ground? If eyes are the windows to the soul, it seems to me that windows are the keys to a home. I love the waterfront building and the doggie on the balcony -- I'd have whistled to him, too! And you're so right -- the flower shop display is stunning and eye-catching.

Have a great rest of your week, my dear! xo

  5. Hey there Anni!

I so enjoy your photos too! You're an excellent photographer. You're a PRO!

I watched that pigeon land on the windowsill and grabbed my camera so fast. I had to manually focus the lens because I wanted a closeup, so I didn't know if any of the photos I took would come out. I was lucky to get THAT one.

":But, that fire escape is one if it could talk, could write a book of stories, I'm sure!!"

    HA! You're so right!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're enjoying a fantastic week!

  6. Aw....thank you, Candice! Isn't the color of that building faaaaaaaabulous? That orange just JUMPS out at you. I also love the doors at the bottom of the photo. That shot was taking in Old City, one of my favorite parts of Philly.

"That large shoe with the flowers is so creative!"

Isn't it AWESOME? I had to do a double-take when I first saw it to see if it was, in fact, a SHOE!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great rest of your week!

  7. Thank you, my friend! X

And you're absolutely right, that bright white fire escape IS brand new. A little over a year ago, that building caught on fire from the restaurant next door, so they had to rebuilding that building, thus a new fire escape.

"In our old neighborhood, someone redid the siding on their house and had contrasting frames like that put around their windows in their colonial and it looked fabulous!"

    Oooooo....that sounds does FAB-U-LOUS!!!

Isn't that flower pump a HOOT? And yes, it's a permanent display. Even last year winter during our heavy snowfalls, they kept it out there. To be honest, I'm surprise (being Philly) that someone hasn't tried to destroy it. Or STEAL it. HA!

" I love to live in a place with lots of natural light. Makes a huge difference on my mood."

Yes, I feel the same way. Even my small apartment has FOUR huge windows, which makes it feel much larger than what it is. I can't imagine living in a space with only one window.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you're having a wonderful week too!

OMG Debbie, yes, you were the FIRST person I thought of when I took that photograph!

" I guess the firemen would just have to blindfold me and PUSH me, ha!"

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That CRACKED ME UP!

And you are spot on in saying how people "up high" never stop to think about what their look like to those on the ground. Well, that is, except, for people like me who is always looking UP!

"If eyes are the windows to the soul, it seems to me that windows are the keys to a home."

LOVED that! And you're right too!

Isn't that little doggie cute? I think it was a Miniature Pinscher. For some reason, I looked up at the perfect time and saw him/her standing there. I got lucky with that shot!

Hope you're having a FAB week so far, my friend! Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Wow, what a great selection of photos, Ron! I love the diversity. That's one of the things I miss about living in an old city, the beautiful architecture. You don't see that kind of long standing architecture anymore. I've never visited Philadelphia, but it looks very similar to Boston. That alleyway photo is fantastic. I love not only the windows, but the stone street.

Love the flowered shoe! I'm sure it gets a lot of attention and business. Smart visual!

    Great pics, Ron!

  10. Ron, each one of these is so completely different! I love them all for different reasons. Is there an area in Philadelphia where you took most of these or are they from all over? That final shot of the apartment with all the windows is just so cool because the reflections in the windows all look like pictures within each window. It looks they were painting into each window. And the also love the reflection on the mirrored roof to the right. Is that a patio? Amada would be a restaurant I'd go because I love Spanish food. But the look of your photo, it looks like it's got a great atmosphere.

You have a great eye for photography, Ron.

  11. Ron, once again you have displayed your incredible photographic talent. These images are fantastic!

Each one of them seems to tell a story. Who owns that little doggie? What goes on behind those windows in the alley?

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then windows can take us to a building's soul.

I love old buildings with their beautiful windows. And you're so right about city dwellers never looking up. I have fascination with carvings that you see on the outside of many old time office buildings.

People will go to museums to see works of art, but they'll walk by these beautiful carvings and sculptures (and windows!) without ever looking up from their phones.

By the way, I absolutely love that Melissa Anderson quote. It gets right down to business, doesn't it?

Excellent work, buddy, thanks so much for sharing.

    Take care!

  12. Hello there, Clair!

Thank you for you kind words :)

And yes, that's one of the reasons I love living in an old city, the architecture! And you're right, you see that kind of craftsmanship anyone.

You know, I've never been to Boston but people that have, or have lived there, always say the same -- Philly looks a lot like Boston.

The alleyway shot I took in Old City. It's one of my favorite parts of the city because it's the OLDEST part of the city. LOVE the cobblestone streets!

"Love the flowered shoe! I'm sure it gets a lot of attention and business. Smart visual!"

Yes, I'm sure it does too. I remember seeing it for the first time and being so impressed by the SIZE. The flowers, of course, are fake, but they look like a bridal bouquet!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great rest of your week!

  13. Hey there Daniel!

Yes, there is. I took many of these in my favorite part of the city, Old City. It's the oldest part of Philadelphia, so it's got some of the most amazing buildings. Many of the streets are still paved in cobblestone. That part of the city has a lot of history - Benjamin Franklin's house, the Betsy Ross House, and they even have the house where Edgar Allan Poe wrote The Raven. Such a cool part of the city. It reminds me of SoHo in NYC.

"That final shot of the apartment with all the windows is just so cool because the reflections in the windows all look like pictures within each window. It looks they were painting into each window."

You know, you're right, it does! I didn't even think of that! And yes, that area is a patio for the tenants. Isn't it a neat-looking building?

I've never eaten at Amada, but know people who have and they said it was faaaaaaaabulous! And it looks fabulous even from the outside.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your sweet words. Hope you're enjoying a fantastic week!

  14. Hellooooooooo there, Rob!

Aw...thanks, buddy! I've been taking these photos for the past 4-5 months and had them stored in my photo gallery. So, I just decided to get them off my computer and post them here.

"Each one of them seems to tell a story. Who owns that little doggie? What goes on behind those windows in the alley?"

HA! Exactly, each one tells a different story. That's what I love about photographs; especially the ones in which I don't even know the people in the photo because I can just "IMAGINE" who they are and what their life is like.

"If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then windows can take us to a building's soul."

Oooooooo.... I love that!!!! Both you and Debbie came up with EXCELLENT quotes! Well done!

" I have fascination with carvings that you see on the outside of many old time office buildings."

Me too! Me too! Aren't they fascinating? And that's why I am especially drawn to Lower Manhattan and the Financial District. I LOVE all the old office buildings down there. And what you said is so true, living in a city there are so many gorgeous works of art all around us, yet we forget to look at them.

Isn't that quote fabulous? And I thought the same thing, it gets right down to business. I actually had to read it a few times to first "get it."

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a most excellent rest of your week!

  17. Stellar shots, Ron! I am so in love with the alleyway window photograph - the angle, the contrasts, the lighting - it ROCKS! I agree with you about door and windows, they each have their own unique look and feel. That last photo is so different from the rest. And love all the reflections in the windows.

Once again, your nailed it, dude! You inspire me.

  18. Hiya Matt!

Glad you enjoyed, and thank you for your kind words. I took that alleyway photo five months ago, when the weather was still kind of late fall/early spring, so it was cloudy and rainy, which gave the photo a feel.

That final photo was the last photo I took. I was walking home from the waterfront one day and spotted it.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a grrrrreat week!

  19. I love everything about this post! Your urban photo captures always inspire me to want to go to our town's downtown area and do the same. Someday I hope to actually follow through on that desire. 😀 Doors are another fascination I have that I know we share. Awesome captures. X

  20. Aw...thank you, Lisa! :)

OMG...I would LOVE to see photographs of your town's downtown area! Looking forward to it!

Yup...doors are another fascination of mine as well. Years ago (even before you and I started blogging together), I used to post DOOR photographs every few months.

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting on my post. I really appreciate that! Hope all is well. I know like me, you're eagerly awaiting the fall and cooler weather. It's been sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hot and humid here, but we're getting a break this weekend.

  21. FANTASTIC photos, Ron! Each one is a piece of art! Because of you, my husband and I discovered Old City. We've dined at Amada and loved it. Old City has so many great restaurants, coffee shops, and shops. It has such a great vibe. Reminds me of SoHo on a smaller scale.

That alleyway shot is my favorite!

Hope you're having a great weekend. We're finally getting a break (today and tomorrow) from the horrendous heat and humidity. Can't wait for AUTUMN! xo

  22. Helloooooooooo there, Elaine!

YES! I totally agree that Old City is SoHo on a smaller scale! It's actually favorite part of the city. I love the cobblestone streets, old buildings, and really cool alleyways.

I've never eaten at Amada but heard that the menu is awesome and the food delicious. Anytime I walk by, it's always packed with people.

OMG, yes, I saw that today is going to be in the high 70's and for the next several days in the low 80's. And THANK GOD because I am soooooooooooooooooooooo over this summer. It's truly been one of the hottest we've ever had. So looking forward to Autumn as well. Yahoooooooooooooo!

    Have a super weekend, neighbor!

  23. Ron, I love when you post city photographs because that's one of the major things I miss about living in NY, going into Manhattan. You're right, there is such a wonderful diversity in cities. And not only when it comes to the architecture, but the people as well.

That photo of the pigeon reminded me of walking through Central Park and seeing all the pigeons in front of you as they suddenly all fly up in the air, almost hitting you in the face. LOL! And that photo of the pump filled with flowers is fantastic! It reminded me of the movie, "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" when they put that HUGE pump on top of the bus!

Hope you're enjoying a great weekend, Ron! x Just think, Fall is approaching! :)

  24. "And that photo of the pump filled with flowers is fantastic! It reminded me of the movie, "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" when they put that HUGE pump on top of the bus!"

OMG Denise, you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO right, it DOES remind me of that movie. And what a GREAT movie that was. I bet I've seen it at least TEN times, if not more.

Yes, not only the diversity in architecture, but the people as well. That's what I loved about living in NYC, all the different cultures all living together.

"That photo of the pigeon reminded me of walking through Central Park and seeing all the pigeons in front of you as they suddenly all fly up in the air, almost hitting you in the face. LOL!"

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Yup...and I remember that too! I'm not a big pigeon fan, so that's one of the things I didn't like about living in NYC, all the FREAKING pigeons flying at you in the parks.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Hope you're having a fantabulous weekend! And yes....it's ALMOST FALL!!!!!!!!

    *doing the happy dance*

  26. Enjoyed this photo tour of Philly, Ron, especially liked the quote because it was so perfect both for this post and life. Looking around when out and about is one of the simple joys that many people overlook it seems. Thanks for the reminder to keep looking up because you never know what you will see - like a doggie in the window (think Patti Page) or a pigeon.

Now you have me missing the city and it ha been so many years since I've been back, snce college graduation in fact,YIKES!

  27. Helloooooooooo there, D!

Isn't the quote great? I found it online and instantly knew I wanted to include it within this post because, as you said, it's perfect for life, isn't it?

"like a doggie in the window (think Patti Page) "

HA! OMG...you're so right. I forgot about that song by Patti Page!!!

"Now you have me missing the city and it ha been so many years since I've been back, snce college graduation in fact,YIKES!"

That's right, I have to remember that you went to school here. And it's funny because I don't live far from Temple University. If you come back for a visit, you will have to be sure to stop by Temple just to see it again!

Thanks so much for stopping by, D. Hope you're enjoying a fantastic week!

  29. I'm with you - when I travel, there are always door and window shots in my photos. They are architecturally interesting, of course, but I think there's something about them being the portal between the outside world and the inside that intrigues me. You got some great shots here and I love that little doggy!
