My Journey

Ever since I can remember, I've always had an interest in alternative health therapies. It's not that I don't believe in conventional medicine, because I do. However for me, personally, my body seems to respond more favorably to alternative modes of health. Even as a kid I was always interested in how Native American Indians used things from the earth (such as herbs) to promote health, as well as the Asian and Egyptian cultures. What especially interested me about these cultures was how they didn't just treat illness as a "physical thing" because they perceived healing as a combination of body, mind and spirit. They addressed the whole. And that made perfect sense to me because I believe that all three are interconnected and support each other. When one is out of sync, it affects the other two.

It was back in the 1980's when I started my own personal journey into investigating alternative therapies through books. I would go to the library and bookstores and read everything I could get my hands on. I was like a sponge, thirsty for knowledge. Then in the 1990's and early-2000's, I changed direction in my goal as a theater actor and traveled down another path. I focused my time and energy on putting these alternative therapies into practice by investing in classes and attaining my certifications. I am certified in Reiki (Level 2), Foot Reflexology, Hot Stone Reflexology, and Introduction To Aromatherapy. All of which I continue to use on myself regularly. I consider these things valuable tools in supporting and sustaining positive health. Not only are they beneficial for healing, but prevention as well.

And oddly enough, I never questioned my redirection in paths because even when I was very much focused on my theater career, alternative health practices where always a huge part of my preparation for performing onstage. To be an actor in the theater, your health is extremely important because you have to perform six days a week, eight shows a week; therefore, I used these practices to remain strong, increase my energy, and keep my mind sharp.

For many years, I not only offered my services to others for a fee, but I also offered my services as a volunteer, working with those who were HIV. And at hospice, I offered my assistance to those in the final phase of life.

And I have to say that volunteering was the most rewarding and fulfilling because I learned the most about healing. Sometimes healing does not mean recovering from an illness, it means embracing and accepting what is, which is a different kind of healing. And a very powerful one.

I must also add here that working as a volunteer was never depressing or sad for me. On the contrary, it was extremely uplifting and inspiring because being with those who were seriously ill and/or dying, taught me so much about living

----------------------------------------

Today I would like to share one of the therapies that I use:

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a gentle ancient art that utilizes the properties and aromas of essential plant oils to influence the body, mind and spirit.

Essential oils occur widely in the plant kingdom and are sometimes referred to as the plants "life force." This life force is very much connected to the human life force. When the two come in contact, a natural restoration is possible.

Essential oils cause effects by two main routes – the skin and the nose. When applied to the skin, a carrier oil (vegetable) is used to dilute and distribute the essential oil over its surface. Simultaneously the aroma is absorbed through the nose, affecting the mind and emotions.

Aromatherapy is a powerful pathway that can open the consciousness, touch the spirit, quiet the mind, and rejuvenate the body.

Listed below are the four essential oils I am never without because I use them on a daily basis. And not only for their antibacterial benefits, but so many other benefits as well.

Example: Peppermint oil is not only beneficial for things like colds, headaches, relieves itching, and reduces muscle spams, it's also an excellent bug deterrent. I use it a lot during the summer months to keep bugs at bay. I learned this from living in Florida where bugs are plentiful. I simply place a few drops of peppermint oil on small cotton pads and then distribute them around my apartment. VIOLA! I never see a bug. Plus, my apartment smells fresh and clean.

Uses and benefits of all four essential oils...

-PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Peppermint essential oil has many uses that range from a topical to an oral rinse. It is a complex oil that has been used as herb, flavoring, and more for thousands of years. Its versatility as one of the antibacterial essential oils makes peppermint a top choice for most health concerns. There are strong antibacterial capabilities, but that is just the tip of the iceberg from this amazing plant.

Peppermint essential oil is a complex ingredient that has benefited man for thousands of years. In this study, which appeared in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, peppermint essential oil was shown to be an effective treatment for all 22 types of bacteria used in the study.

-LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Lavender essential oil, like peppermint essential oil, has a long and rich history as a versatile treatment for many different conditions. Lavender is prized for its ability to help reduce emotional stress, improve sleep, and beneficial in skincare.

In a study that appeared in the Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and found on the U.S. National Library of Medicine site, the benefits of lavender essential oil was shown to be an effective agent against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Lavender Essential Oil is an ancient medicinal agent with a long list of healing benefits.

-TEA TREE ESSENTIAL OIL

Tea Tree essential oil has a long history as a curative and tool for wound treatment. And now it seems to be the new wonder ingredient in many products. It has a strong, pungent odor and powerful antibacterial action. However, its usage goes far beyond that of antibacterial essential oils and includes skin treatment, cosmetics, and as a blending ingredient in special recipes for health.

In a study that appeared on the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health’s site, they discussed the fact that tea tree is an antibacterial essential oil that may provide a treatment for wound therapy against antibiotic resistant pathogens.

-EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL

Eucalyptus essential oil is perhaps best known for its respiratory benefits. The powerful smelling eucalyptus essential oil not only invigorates the body but also works well as both an antibacterial and antifungal agent.

Eucalyptus essential oil, like peppermint essential oil, appeared in a study found on the U.S. National Library of Medicine website. The study compared ten essential oils and their antibacterial properties against 22 gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Like peppermint essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil was effective against all 22 strains of bacteria in the test.

Last Christmas, I treated myself to a new essential oil diffuser and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I use it several times a week to keep my sinuses and lungs clean and clear, particularly during the summer months because of the humidity.

I also treated myself to an essential oil set from the same company and found them to be of excellent quality.

I do hope you found this post informative and helpful in some way.

In the future, I may be sharing other alternative therapies that I use as well.

Wishing you a faaaaaaabulous rest of your week, everyone! 💗

  2. Ron, thank you so much for responding to my comment on a previous post about posting on essential oils, I REALLY appreciate that! And what a wonderful post this is. WOW...I had no idea you had experience in all those therapies?! And thank you for sharing your journey, I found it so fascinating. You and I sound alike in our interest in alternative therapies and how effective they can be. I have always been interested in these types of therapies because I believe there is a lot we can learn from them. I have a friend who went to medical school and became an MD, but also believes in traditional (ayurvedic) medicine as well. In her practice, she uses both because she believes they compliment each other.

I really like how you expressed this -- " how they didn't just treat illness as a "physical thing" because they perceived healing as a combination of body, mind and spirit. They addressed the whole. And that made perfect sense to me because I believe that all three are interconnected and support each other. When one is out of sync, it affects the other two."

I'm going to past this post on to my doctor friend because I think she would enjoy reading it. :)

Thanks again for sharing this today, Ron. So interesting to read about your journey!

  3. Thank you for sharing this, Ron. I found it very informative. I never knew that you volunteered with HIV patients and Hospice. Bravo! Just knowing you through your blog, I’m certain you were a tremendous boost to everyone you cared for. You have a gift of connecting with people, which I LOVE!

My husband has been using tea tree oil for years on his feet for toenail issues. For me, being a long time candle user, I know how much scent can lift my spirits, so I have recently been buying essential oil kits like you show. I use them on my wool dryer balls and while they don’t leave a lasting scent on my clothes, they do make the laundry room smell so much better. That room gets humid and funky, so I’m pleased with the results. I will have to try your peppermint oil trick, too. And I bought some wax and other candle making supplies so I can try my hand at candle making with essential oils this winter. Wish me luck! Hope you’re having a great week. XO

  4. Yes Ron, I definitely found this very informative and helpful. I had no idea you had this kind of background and training. Very interesting. I've used essential oils before but very limited in my knowledge. I've used eucalyptus in the past whenever I've had a cold to help my breathing (sinuses and lungs) which was recommended by a friend of mine years ago. And I have to say that it really helped. When I have more time, I'm going to investigate the links you shared on the various methods you're certified in because I'm curious. I've heard of them, but I just don't know much about them.

I really like the look of that diffuser. I may have to invest in one of those. Where did you get it, may I ask?

Thank you for sharing this today, Ron. I appreciate the time you took to present this in such a clear an detailed way.

  5. Hey there Anni!

WOW...that is so cool! Great to hear how your children use oils, herbs, and meditation for health!!!!

"And I can say, for them, it's wondrous and so highly beneficial. I've also noticed for myself I use tea tree oil & lavender."

That's AWESOME! What I love about tea tree is that is has SO MUCH uses, which is why I'm never without. And lavender as well!

"Mind over matter can be a big plus when it comes to sustaining/maintaining a healthy life along with the aid of "nature's bountiful gifts".

LOVE how you said that!!!!! And YES....I agree!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing on this post, Anni. Very much appreciate that! Have a great week!

  6. Oh, you are so welcome, Clair! And I THANK YOU TOO, because by asking me that question, you inspired me to share this post!

You and I DO sound a lot a like, yes!

" I have a friend who went to medical school and became an MD, but also believes in traditional (ayurvedic) medicine as well. In her practice, she uses both because she believes they compliment each other."

OMG....that is so AWESOME! I LOVE to hear stuff like that because it just goes to prove that there are benefits to BOTH ways of practice. We have a lot of hospitals here in Philly and one of them (Jefferson) has a whole wing of the hospital specifically dedicated to alternative medicine that the patients are offered. They offer most of the modalities that I practice in that hospital, which I think is just wonderful. A lot of the cancer patients use them while undergoing chemo.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. And again, thanks for inspiring me to share this post today. Have a fantastic week!

P.S. In case you're interested, here the link to another one of my blogs, which I started back in 2006. I no longer post there, but leave it up so that people can find information. I have a lot of posts on the therapies that I practice, you made find some of them interesting.

  7. This is simply fascinating, Ron -- thank you for posting it (and in such a clear, informative way!) I tend to be right there with you, my friend. I believe in traditional medicine, but I can readily see the benefits of alternative medicine, at least for me. Our bodies aren't just physical -- they're mental, emotional, and spiritual, too, and it only makes sense to treat the whole body to prevent disease and restore well-being.

I've seen those essential oil diffusers in stores, but I don't have one because I never understood how to use it. Thanks to you, now I'm itching to get one for myself! Before I do, though, I'll have to do some more research to find out if anything I might consider using in one would be detrimental to Monkey. Can't bear the thought of starting his diarrhea back up, ha!

Thanks again for this info, and you stay safe in all the rain and wind Ida seems to be bringing your way. xx

  8. Thank you for your sweet, kind words, my friend. And you how no idea how much those HIV patients and hospice gave back to me because they taught me so much about living. I always felt like it was an honor to be with them.

"My husband has been using tea tree oil for years on his feet for toenail issues."

Yup! Tea tree is outstanding for issues like that. It's truly the best stuff for nail fungus. And it's also great for whenever you get a blemish because it kills the bacteria under the blemish and gets rid of the blemish so quickly, with out leave a dry spot on your face.

" I use them on my wool dryer balls and while they don’t leave a lasting scent on my clothes, they do make the laundry room smell so much better."

OMG YES! YES! YES! I use those wool dryer balls too, aren't they great? In fact one of the kits I purchased at Trader Joe's by the way, came with 6 of those wool balls (small size) that you can use around the house as freshener. The set came with THREE bottle of essential oils and it was only $9.99 for the whole set!

The peppermint trick works SO WELL! I never see a bug in my apartment. Peppermint is also good for deterring mice too. They hate the smell of peppermint.

" And I bought some wax and other candle making supplies so I can try my hand at candle making with essential oils this winter. Wish me luck! "

OMG...that sounds like so much fun! I have to try that too this winter!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. I always enjoy reading your comments! Have a great rest of your week!

  9. Hey there, Daniel!

Yes, I have always been interested in things like this, even as a kid. So I decided to take classes where I could get certified and use it on other people as well as myself.

" I've used eucalyptus in the past whenever I've had a cold to help my breathing (sinuses and lungs) which was recommended by a friend of mine years ago."

Yup! Eucalyptus is GREAT for colds because it's a powerful decongestant. It's also great for allergies.

Yes, check out the links when you have time because the information they provide is very detailed about what they do and how they benefit. Even now, I still enjoy reading about these things because I find that I always learn something new.

I got that diffuser (and the essential oil) box set at Walgreens last year. They still have them there, so if you have a Walgreens near you, stop in and see if they carry that brand. They go on sale A LOT!

Walgreens has a really great wellness area in the store where they sell stuff like that. I also get my vitamins there because they have a great selection. And I find they cheaper than in most places.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic rest of your week!

  10. Hellooooooooo there Debbie!

So happy to hear that you found this post informative. I may be posting more like this in the future.

"I tend to be right there with you, my friend. I believe in traditional medicine, but I can readily see the benefits of alternative medicine, at least for me. Our bodies aren't just physical -- they're mental, emotional, and spiritual, too, and it only makes sense to treat the whole body to prevent disease and restore well-being."

Yes, my thoughts exactly! I think both conventional medicine AND alternative medicine have many benefits. So why not use a little of both? And I think it depends on the person. Some people, like me, seem to respond very well and very quickly to alternative therapies.

Yes, I bought my diffuser in Walgreens of all places. I also got the essential oil box set there as well. And they were both VERY reasonably priced. At Christmas they were running a sale, so I got them even cheaper!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on this topic, my friend. Appreciate that! Have a super rest of your week!

P.S. Yes, we're already getting rain from Ida. Today and tomorrow it's supposed to rain most of the day. And what I love about that is that the rain is bringing in cooler weather!

  11. EXCELLENT post, Ron! And thank you so much for mentioning the peppermint oil/bug trick because I will try that. You're so right, Florida is like a magnet for bugs. Do you remember those black water bugs (Palmettos Bugs) when you lived here? Oh my god, I remember seeing them for the first time when I moved here and FREAKED OUT, because not only are they HUGE, but they FLY! I will sometimes get them in my bathroom or kitchen sink because they love water and humidity.

I am so digging that diffuser you shared in the photo. It's so neat looking. I may have to get one of those.

One of my favorite scents is eucalyptus. I have a body spray that I got from Target and one of the notes in the spray is eucalyptus. It smells so fresh and clean. I use it a lot during the warmer summer months.

Thanks again for sharing this helpful post. I do hope you'll post similar posts in the future. I would really like to know more about reflexology. I used to go to a massage therapist who used that during her sessions. It felt wonderful! xo

  12. Hola Denise!

"Do you remember those black water bugs (Palmettos Bugs) when you lived here? Oh my god, I remember seeing them for the first time when I moved here and FREAKED OUT, because not only are they HUGE, but they FLY! "

OH...MY...GOD...YES!!!! I remember them VERY clearly! And it's funny you mentioned them because I was telling someone at work about those bugs and they had no idea what a Palmetto Bug was. And when I told them that they flew, they almost died! And yes, they love wet, damp areas. That's why they usually lurk in bathrooms or under a sink. One time I actually saw one when I was taking a shower. It was INSIDE the shower with me. I flipped out. HA!

I got that diffuser in Walgreens on sale. It was very in expensive. Even without the sale it was inexpensive. I think I paid $25.00 (on sale), and the original price was $30.00. And the essential oils set was only $25.00 for SIX oils.

I think I've seen that body spray you mentioned in Target. I love the smell of eucalyptus as well.

"I would really like to know more about reflexology. I used to go to a massage therapist who used that during her sessions. It felt wonderful! "

Oh, that's awesome! Yes, doesn't it feel fabulous? I use it on myself every night before I go to bed. It relaxes me. I may post about that in my next alternative health post.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a great rest of your week!

  13. Ron, I must chime in with one of your reader's comment (Bijoux) about working with HIV and Hospice. I’m absolutely SURE you were a tremendous boost to everyone you cared for because You DO have a gift of connecting with people! And what a gift!

I found this post tremendously informative. I dabble a bit in aromatherapy and find it to be very helpful and effective. I use three out of the four you listed. The only one I haven't used is peppermint, which I will pick up a bottle the next time I'm at the health store because I had no idea it deterred bugs. Gotta get it!

It's interesting to read about how you used these therapies during your acting/theater career because I can definitely see how they would help you perform eight shows a week. I've always been in awe at stage actors because you have to have a lot of stamina to do that every night. I can't imagine having to sing, dance, and act live. It's one thing to do it for film, but to repeat it night after night onstage has to be tough.

Thank you for sharing, Ron. You're a wealth of knowledge. Hey, are you enjoying this cooler weather since the storm last night? My husband and I are in heaven! xo

  14. Hey, Ron, what an excellent post! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences with alternative therapy.

I have not explored this area as much as I would like, so thanks for the reminder.

I do meditate and practice qigong, which is a wonderful gentle exercise that can reduce anxiety--and just about anything else that's bugging you.

I worked with an acupuncturist years ago and he said Western medicine only responses to sickness, whereas Chinese medical practitioners focus on keeping people well.

And I met a man who ran a clinic that focused on many of the disciplines that you discussed, but he disliked the term "alternative" and preferred "supplemental."

Like you, he believed in conventional medicine, but he didn't want to chose one method over another.

Thanks again for these details and descriptions--and kudos to you for helping sick people. You're the best, my brother!

    Take care!

  15. Helloooooo there, Elaine!

    Thank you X

For me when I was volunteering, I always felt as if I was "getting" more than I was giving because I was receiving so much knowledge and understanding about living. Both those with HIV and at hospice, would open up to me and share the most intimate things, which made me feel honored. I learned so much for them. I've been feeling the desire to volunteer again, so I'm looking into things. Now that I'm working part time, I feel like I have more time and flexibility to offer my services.

That's AWESOME that you dabble in aromatherapy! Isn't it interesting AND fun? I enjoy my sense of smell, so aromatherapy is something I have a passion for. Yes...you have got to try the peppermint for deterring bugs because it truly works.

" you have to have a lot of stamina to do that every night. I can't imagine having to sing, dance, and act live. It's one thing to do it for film, but to repeat it night after night onstage has to be tough."

It's both challenging and energizing at the same time. And yes, you have build your stamina to do it every night. But I have to say that for me, I've always had a lot of energy. My father did too. I think that's where I get it from.

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! And YES! I am so enjoying this cooler weather. However, I can't believe how certain areas of the east coast got hit so hard by that hurricane. YIKES!

  16. Hey there, Rob!

Thank YOU, and you're very welcome! I know that you also have explored these modalities (Reiki, yoga, tapping, etc.) and found them to be helpful. That's awesome!

And yes, I've heard of qigong, but have never tried it. I'll have to look into that as well. I do from people (like yourself) who practice it, say it really helps on many different levels.

"Like you, he believed in conventional medicine, but he didn't want to chose one method over another."

Yes, and I have heard the term "supplemental" as well as "complimentary." In fact Jefferson Hospital (which is not far from where I live) has a whole wing of the building for things like this and they refer to it as "complementary therapy."

My feeling is whatever works for each individual is great. I think using both (conventional and alternative/supplemental) is like getting the best of both worlds.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and experience on this topic. I really appreciate it!

Have an awesome rest of your week, buddy!

  19. Thanks Ron for posting about this subject. I have used tea tree oil to treat nail fungus. While it hasn't brought tremendous improvement, it is better than buying over the counter products sold in retail pharmacies. Thanks for the tip about peppermint oil being useful in repelling insects. We notice both gnats and fruit flies especially in summer months (of course) and I may give your suggestion soon. Purple and lavender are my favorite colors and lavender oil has been known to produce restful sleep as you know, so another on my list. And who doesn';t like eucalyptus?

Thanks for sharing about how rewarding you found your volunteer time. I am sure those you helped were more than appreciative as you are definitely a caring people person...it shows, my blogger friend.

  20. "Sometimes healing does not mean recovering from an illness, it means embracing and accepting what is, which is a different kind of healing. And a very powerful one."

Ron, what a sobering statement. And it's true. For all of us, death is inevitable, and acceptance is a powerful form of healing. I really admire your ability to go where life leads you, knowing that it may take you down a different path. Have you always been that way?

I also admire your faith in knowing how alternative methods are best for you, personally, but that you also leave yourself open to conventional medicine as well.

Speaking of aromatherapy, my girlfriend is into essential oils too. She's always creating different scents to spray around our apartment. She also uses them as skincare.

Thank you for sharing and yet another interesting thing about yourself. As long as I've known you, I'm still learning new things about you.

    Have a good weekend, dude!

  21. Hey there D!

Great to hear that you're using tea tree oil for treat nail fungus. I have to say that it takes time before you see tremendous results, and you have to be consistent with it. I have a friend in Florida who is a licensed nail technician (manicures, pedicures, etc.) and she recommends it to her client with nail fungus. She say's it more effective than products sold in retail pharmacies.

OMG, me too! Last year I saw a ton of gnats and fruit flies for some reason. This year, not so much. But the peppermint oil does help to deter them.

" Purple and lavender are my favorite colors and lavender oil has been known to produce restful sleep as you know, so another on my list."

Isn't the aroma of lavender lovely? It's probably my favorite. And yet, I know many people who can't stand the scent. I always put a few drops on my pillow case before bed.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and experiences with essential oils, I really appreciate that. And thanks for you kind words as well.

    Have a faaaaaaaaabulous weekend!

  22. Hiya Matt!

Thank you for your sweet words. :)

Ad yes, I've pretty much been that way all my life. And I think some of that has to do with the various careers I've had that seemed to have led me to each one. I've always known that I'm not meant to do just ONE thing with my life. I'm here to experience a variety of things. And as much I adored acting in the theater, I could sense it was time for a change. I just knew it! And that's not to say that I will never go back to acting. I very well may someday.

I just have always sensed what works best for my body. I always try alternative methods first, and then if it doesn't work, I will go to conventional medicine. Or, I may use both.

"Speaking of aromatherapy, my girlfriend is into essential oils too. She's always creating different scents to spray around our apartment. She also uses them as skincare."

That's AWESOME!!! I to use them as skincare. I used German Chamomile mixed in jojoba oil as a face oil.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on this topic. Appreciate it, my friend!

    Have a most excellent weekend!

  23. Ooops! Ron, I forget to mention in my first comment that I had a Reiki session many years ago when I was still living in NY. A friend of mine gave me a session as a birthday gift one year from her massage therapist and I really enjoyed it. It was so hard to explain to my husband what it actually was because it's like nothing else I every felt. It was like getting a massage without being massaged. And it was so relaxing! I felt great for days afterward. My whole body felt like it was floating!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Elaine, thank you so much for stopping back to let me know that you had experienced a Reiki session. That is so neat!!! I know, Reiki is something that is very hard explain to anyone. Even me, as Reiki practitioner, I find it hard to put into words exactly what it is and how it makes you feel because everyone is different, therefore will experience it differently. However the one thing that everyone says is that it's soooooooooooooo relaxing. Like you said, it's like getting a massage without getting a massage. It's a very powerful therapy. It's all about energy and balancing the energy within you. It's seems subtle but the effects go very deep.

  25. I absolutely agree that healing isn't always about continuing to live. That's often out of your hands and then you have to focus on acceptance and living as well as you can until you die. Anything that helps with healing, I'm for. Everyone has to find what works for them, and I am glad you have found the oils to be so useful for you.

  26. "... healing isn't always about continuing to live. That's often out of your hands and then you have to focus on acceptance and living as well as you can until you die."

BRAVO! I love your insight on that! And that's one of the major things I learned from volunteering at Hospice. I always felt as though I was receiving more than I was giving. I felt honored to be in their presence.

  28. Yes, Lisa, Frankincense is the BOMB! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how it smells! I don't have any at the moment, but you reminded me to get some. I especially love the aroma during the colder Autumn and Winter months because its rich, earth, warm fragrance.
