For those of you who have been reading my blog for some time now, know that one of my food passions is pasta. I eat pasta at least 1-2 times a week. And when I eat it, I eat A LOT. No lie, I can consume half a pound of pasta in one sitting. And I make it different ways each time I prepare it; using various sauces. Frequently, I'll add fresh veggies to a pasta dish. Even cannellini beans.

Out of all the pasta in the world, my favorite form is spaghetti. Perhaps it's my upbringing, but spaghetti is the GOD of pasta.

Spaghetti

Characteristics: These long, round strands are the most popular type of pasta in the United States. Spaghetti means "little twine," and variations include spaghettini (thinner), spaghettoni (thicker), bucatini (thicker and straw-like, with a hollow center), capellini (very thin) and angel's hair (thinnest). Spaghetti is traditionally served with simple, thin sauces such as olive oil or marinara.

Note: I also eat linguine because it holds onto sauces better than round spaghetti, due to its flat curvature.

Eating Spaghetti

1) Using Just a Fork

2) Using a Fork and a Spoon

If you check the internet, you will find a bazillion conflicting opinions about how real Italians eat spaghetti. The biggest conflict I read is that you should NEVER, EVER use a spoon when eating spaghetti. It's considered a sacrilegious act in the Italian food bible. Yet, some native Italians say they do use a spoon. Go figure.

NO SPOON TWIRLING RULE

Don’t use a spoon to twirl your spaghetti onto your fork. It’s customary to set the table with a fork, knife, and spoon, and you can use your spoon to add sauce and cheese, and then to mix the pasta. However, pasta is meant to be eaten with your fork alone – no spoons to assist.

However, I disagree with "no spoon twirling rule" because that's precisely how I eat spaghetti. I've done it since I was a kid growing up in an Italian family. And I have to say that if you've never tried it, do. Because it's actually quite easy and very efficient. What I especially like about using a spoon is that you can control exactly how much spaghetti you put on the fork and into your mouth.

Example-

I eventually found an article online a few days ago that explained why there are so many conflicting opinions about how to eat spaghetti. A native Italian wrote this article. And in it, he stated that even people in Italy eat spaghetti differently because it all depends on the region they were born and their family tradition.

My Own Italian Family-

Here, take a look at a photograph of my mother and father (Mary and Frank), on their wedding day. When I look at this photo, it reminds me of an image from the movie, 'The Godfather', because it's soooooo Italian...

*Included are my mother's father, Joseph Rosato (top row on her right), her sister, Theresa (bottom row on her left), her brother, Tom (top row, her far left). Also included is my father's sister, Elaine (bottom row, far left of my father). I have no idea who the other people are in this photo. I've always been curious to discover who the young lady (on the bottom row, right of my mother) is because she appears completely drunk and about to fall off her chair. LOL!...

This is what it looked like when my family sat down to eat an Italian meal on weekends and the holidays (included are relatives from both sides of my family). Notice how nice everyone looked, all dressed up at the dining room table. And notice how the table was beautifully set for a meal. I can literally smell the heavenly aromas of Chianti, garlic, and basil emanating from these photographs!

*photos were taken in my childhood home in West Oak Lane, Philadelphia, 1950s...
I would like to conclude this post with a very short video clip of Vincenzo Prosperi, an Italian-born food lover and chef, as he describes "How to Eat Spaghetti like an Italian."

Anyhoo, no matter what way you eat your spaghetti, enjoy it. Mangia!

Have a delicious rest of your week, everyone!

If you so desire, please share how you eat spaghetti. And what's your favorite pasta?

  1. Ron, I share your passion for pasta! I tell my friends all the time that if I could only eat one food in the world, it would be pasta because you can make it so many ways. Thank god I don't have any gluten allergies because I would die. And not from the allergies, but from not being able to eat pasta. lol!

I love the photos you shared of your Italian family. And you're right, it does look like an image from the movie, The Godfather! So do the ones of your family around the dining room table. What a good looking family! I always thought I was Italian in a previous life because I feel so connected to the culture. Have you ever been to Italy? It's my favorite country in Europe.

I eat spaghetti using only a fork. But I have seen people using a spoon as well I never tried it, but now that you mentioned it, I will. My favorite pasta(s) are angel hair, linguine, fusilli, and farfalle. But sometimes, I like good old traditional spaghetti.

Fun and interesting post, Ron! And now I know what I'm making for dinner tonight.....PASTA! xo

  2. I forgot to say in my first comment that I enjoyed the video clip. Love his Italian accent.

  3. Goooood morning, Candice!

"Thank god I don't have any gluten allergies because I would die. And not from the allergies, but from not being able to eat pasta. lol!"

OMG, I say the exact same thing! And I've tried the gluten-free pasta many times and hated myself for doing it because I'm sorry, it just does NOT taste the same as REAL pasta. And thank God I'm not lactose intolerant because cheese is another thing I would never give up. I ADORE cheese!

I found those family photos in a box in my closet, and thought they'd be ideal for this post.

No, can you believe that I have never been to Italy?!?!?! I've been to various countries in Europe, but not Italy. I think I'm afraid if I do go, I'll never come home because I'll fall in love with it. Did you ever see the movie, 'Under the Tuscan Sun'? That would be me!

And YES to all the pasta(s) you listed as your favorites! Farfalle is one of mine as well!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Candice. Enjoy your pasta tonight.

    Mangia!

  5. Oh Ron, the photographs you've shared of your parents wedding day and family at the dinner tables are priceless! They made me SMILE :) And they remind me so much of the family photos of both my family and my husbands. Aren't you glad you were born in that decade? I am! The way people dressed, and the way families came together during the holidays was so special. And let's not even talk about the way people dressed back then!

I'm full Italian, my husband is half Italian and half Latino, so of course we are both mega fans of pasta. I love them all, with the exception of orzo (too mushy). My favorites are ziti, penne, fusilli and spaghetti.

And like you, I eat my spaghetti with both a fork and spoon. I learned it from my nonna on my mother's side. You're right, using a spoon gives you more control over the spaghetti. Otherwise, you get a big fat ball of spaghetti that you can't fit in your mouth. And like the guy in the video said, it's a classy way to eat spaghetti! I've been to Italy and have seen Italians use a spoon.

We (both hubby and I) really enjoyed this post, Ron! Isn't the smell of garlic and basil intoxicating? xo

  6. Ron, this post made me want to eat spaghetti! I read what you said in your comment to Candice and I must agree, pasta substitutes are nothing like REAL pasta. Not only the taste, but the texture as well. Being that I'm a carboholic, yes, I love spaghetti. However, I only use a fork. What I hate is when I see people CUT up their spaghetti into little pieces before they eat it. I feel like saying, why are eating spaghetti? Why not just eat Ditalini or Pastina. lol!

My three favorite pasta's are angel hair, regular spaghetti, and farfalle.

I'm not Italian, but I should be because it's my favorite food in the whole world. And I love a glass (or two) of Chianti with any pasta dish. Red wine MAKES Italian food!

Love the photographs of your family. God, do they ever look Italian or what!

"I've always been curious to discover who the young lady (on the bottom row, right of my mother) is because she appears completely drunk and about to fall off her chair." -- Omg, she does!!!!

  7. Hellooooooooooooo there, Elaine!

" Aren't you glad you were born in that decade? I am! The way people dressed, and the way families came together during the holidays was so special. And let's not even talk about the way people dressed back then!"

Yes, to ALL of that! Soooooooooooooo glad! And yet, living back then I didn't think it was anything special. That is, until now.

I have so many friends who are either half Italian/half Latino or all of each, and there is something very similar about both cultures. I love Italian food, but I also love Spanish food as well. And both Italians and Latins have passion about what they love and don't love. LOL!

I love penne and fusilli too! They both hug the sauce so well, don't they?

You eat with a fork and a spoon too???? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See, there are other people like myself. I was so happy when I found that video on You Tube because the guy is from Italy, so if he says that Italians use a spoon, then I believe it.

Yes, and I wish there was a perfume on the market that smelled like basil and garlic because I'd wear it. HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fabulous rest of your week! And mangia!

  8. Greetings, Daniel!

Yes, it's not only the taste, but the texture that is so completely different than real pasta. I've tried it so many times, and each time I do I say to myself, "NO MORE!"

"What I hate is when I see people CUT up their spaghetti into little pieces before they eat it. I feel like saying, why are eating spaghetti? Why not just eat Ditalini or Pastina. lol!"

CRACKED. ME. UP.!!!! And I agree, WHY?!?!?! The whole point of eating spaghetti is the shape!

You know, I haven't had angel hair in a while, so I need to eat that again. I love it with just olive oil, garlic, and some basil. Simple yet, tasty!

I agree, red wine MAKES Italian food. I don't ever remember seeing the adults in my family not drink red wine with their meals. We always had wine decanters in our home filled with Chianti.

Doesn't she? And I wish I knew who she was, but there is no longer anyone alive in my family who would know that.

Thanks a lot for stopping by, bud. Have a grrrrrrrrrreat rest of your week!

    And mangia!

  9. Yes, Ron, of course I've seen Under the Tuscan Sun! It's one of my all-time romantic/comedy/dramas! Diane Lane is so good in it! She is such a wonderful actress. And I love the whole storyline.

  10. Yes! There isn't a movie that Diane Lane was in that I didn't love. She's the BOMB! And beautiful too! I own that movie on DVD. I also loved Sandra Oh!

  11. Would you believe I was eating spaghetti while reading your post? It's not as good as your Nonna or sweet mother's cooking, but it made me laugh. My favorite pasta is also spaghetti.
I adored your family photos. You look very much like your father.
I admire your love of pasta and appreciate that you share it with the rest of us. I also appreciate how you don't make people feel bad about their choices. You share with love, which makes reading your posts so enjoyable.
I always struggle to twirl my pasta with my fork and spoon. I just tried it with my spaghetti lunch and failed miserably. But I'll keep trying, and when I do, I'll think of you. 😘

Have a great week, my friend. ❤️

    ReplyDelete
  12. "Would you believe I was eating spaghetti while reading your post?"

OMG Kari, that is HYSTERICAL! And do you know what? Tonight I'm trying a new pasta recipe using fusilli pasta and I can't wait to taste it. I always add my own twist on recipes and change certain ingredients. This one has fresh kale, garlic, olive oil, and black olives.

Isn't so funny because everyone who sees a picture of my father says that I look exactly like him. Which I do. However, if you look at the photo of my mother, I look like her as well. I am my father from the nose up. And my mother from the nose down. My facial features are spilt in two. Lol!

I think everyone eats spaghetti differently, and that's a-okay. What bugged me though were the articles I read online which stated that REAL Italians so not use a spoon. Which is why I am so happy that I found that video clip of the REAL Italian who said that yes, some real Italians do use a spoon.

Always a delight to see and read your comments, my friend. Hope you're having a faaaaaabulous week. It's extremely hot and humid today (89 degrees). Oy vey! However, the temp goes down for the next week. YAHOO!

  13. Ron, you look so much like your father. What a handsome man. And what a beautiful woman you mother was. Lovely couple. And I had to laugh at your mention of the aroma's you recall because I have the same aroma memories. God how I love Italian food. I love all Mediteranian food because I'm half Italian and half Greek. Do you like feta cheese?

I eat my spaghetti with a fork only. But I've seen people in restaurants use the fork/spoon method, but never tried it myself. I will do so the next time I have spaghetti. My favorite is plan old tradition spaghetti. I took make it with various sauces. My favorite sause is olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes.

Btw, the flower bouquets in that wedding photo are gorgeous. So are the dresses. And the men look so sharp it their tuxedos and carnations on their lapels.

I wasn't born in the 50s, but I love that decade.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hiya, Clair!

OMG, yes. I million times YES....I adore Greek food and feta cheese. In fact, feta is my favorite cheese. I could literally eat it by breaking off pieces and shoving them into my mouth. HA! Greek food is so healthy too. LOTS of veggies.

I find using a spoon easy. But like anything, it takes practice. My whole family (both sides) used a spoon. My father taught me when I was a kid.

"My favorite sauce is olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes."
    -- Oooooooooooooooo, that's sounds heavenly!

Doesn't the wedding party look faaaaaaaaaabulous? As as man, I love putting on a tuxedo. Wearing one makes you feel so formal. It also makes you stand with your shoulders back and straight. Aren't those bouquets stunning? And they're HUGE.

I never really appreciated the 50s until I got older and looked back. The styles were so classy.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Clair. Have a wonderful weekend!

" As far as how I eat spaghetti is a big no no I'm told...I cut it with fork and knife."

  19. I’m back! Ok, Ron, sit down because I’m about to commit sacrilege . . . I break my spaghetti into thirds before I throw it in the boiling water!! LOL! My husband, who is 1/4 Italian does not like this, but it is so much easier to eat and actually holds the sauce better. At a restaurant, I do use the spoon and fork method. However, I’m trying to eat less carbs, so I’m eating zucchini noodles instead, which require a knife to cut through. I’m used to the flavor now and prefer it over the pasta. Shocking, right?

I’m surprised you don’t know all the people in the wedding photo, but I’d guess they are either friends of your parents or cousins of theirs you never met. While cleaning my mom’s basement, I’m coming across all sorts of photos with no names on the back. I know they belonged to my dad’s mom because the photographers were all near Altoona, PA, where she was from. I suspect some of them were her stepfather’s relatives. I feel bad tossing them, as they are nicely matted and from the 1890’s based on the clothes. But my kids don’t want them and they are likely not blood relatives. I’m thinking of taking pictures of the photos and posting them on a genealogy site in case there are relatives that might want them. Anyhoo, I enjoyed your photos of a big Italian family around the dinner table. Have a great weekend! XO

OMG, you're going to go straight to HELL for committing that sacrilege! Bwhahahahahahahaaha! Only kidding! But I have agree with your husband, I wouldn't like that because for me, anyway, the whole point of eating spaghetti is for its shape (long). Oh well, to each his own. Like I said, however you eat your spaghetti, enjoy it!

I've tried the zucchini noodles and thought they were okay. HOWEVER, I have tried hearts of palm spaghetti and loved it. To me, it looked and tasted more like real pasta. I've also made cold salads using the hearts of palm pasta and it was faaaaaaaabulous!

".... but I’d guess they are either friends of your parents or cousins of theirs you never met. "

Yes, I you're right. And I never had that photo in my own possession until after my mother and father died, so I couldn't ask them who those people were. But regardless, I LOVE that photo!!!

Like you said, years ago they would write the names of the people in the photographs. They would also include the date. Some of the old family photos I have, do have the names. But there are many that don't.

I didn't realize you had relatives from Altoona, PA?!? I've never been there, but have heard of it.

"I’m thinking of taking pictures of the photos and posting them on a genealogy site in case there are relatives that might want them
    . "

    Good idea!

I've been going through a lot of old photos lately and feeling very melancholy about my childhood and family. Particularly, my biological mother's side of the family who were such lovely people, but lost contact with after my mother passed away and we moved to Florida. They were such hardworking and very down to earth people.

Thanks so much for stopping back to leave your comment, my friend. Really appreciate that!

    Have a fantastic weekend!

  21. Ron, your photos sure do take me back -- of course, mine isn't a 100 percent full Italian family. In fact, there are so many blond-haired among us that it looks quite mixed! Nevertheless, I love the way the table was so spectacular, with tablecloth, utensils, "the good dishes," and flowers. People used to DINE, didn't they, and would probably be appalled at today's custom of fast food in paper wrappers ... eaten on the run!

Oh, mercy, I do love me some spaghetti. I should say "pasta," though, because I love bowties, elbows, penne, ziti, and all the other forms, in addition to spaghetti. How fortunate I am, not to be gluten-intolerant, ha!

Great post, Ron. I'm still on break -- so many things going on right now that I can't find words for. They will return, I don't doubt, but the well is temporarily dry. Enjoy the week ahead, my friend! xx

A-MEN! When I look back, I see just how different it was compared to now and appreciate it more. Isn't something how when you're "living it" you don't always see how fabulous it is? It's only in retrospect do you realize just how awesome it was.

"How fortunate I am, not to be gluten-intolerant, ha!"

I feel the same way! I've tried gluten-free pasta and it's just not the same. I also see that way about cheese. Thank God I'm not lactose intolerant.

"I'm still on break -- so many things going on right now that I can't find words for. They will return, I don't doubt, but the well is temporarily dry. "

  23. Ron, I grew up having homemade pasta and sauce as my heritage is also Italian. Growing up, we usually we had pasta once a week, spaghetti was usually a Sunday dinner and my mother made it. Whenever we had a backyard picnic, it was served along with barbecued chicken. She also made the sauce from tomatoes she canned from the garden. Pasta fagiola was another family favorite and always homemade!

There is nothing like homemade that's for sure. I was gifted with a pasta machine from my mother and have made fettuccine and spaghetti, but less often. While we love pasta in many forms, we're trying to cut down on carbs now. I am a twirler and always use a spoon when spaghetti is served.

Fun to see those family photos and my parents wedding group also looked so Italian. There were even more in the wedding party. One day I will post photos.

  24. Hello there, D!

"I grew up having homemade pasta and sauce as my heritage is also Italian. She also made the sauce from tomatoes she canned from the garden. "

OMG, that's AWESOME! I've had homemade sauce as a kid, but never homemade pasta, I think. And if I did, it would have been my father's mother (her name was Rose), because she was a stickler for making everything from scratch as an Italian woman.

"Pasta fagiola was another family favorite and always homemade!"

Okay, that's another Italian food that I worship and adore. God, how I love pasta fagiola!!!!!!

"I am a twirler and always use a spoon when spaghetti is served."

Yahoooooooooooooooo! I discovered another person who uses a spoon as well!!! So many people don't. However, that's how I was taught as a kid. I used to watch my father do it, and then I would copy him. And how cool that you have your very own pasta machine!

I know, doesn't my family look SOOOOO Italian? When I look at those photos, I think of not only the movie, The Godfather, but Moonstruck as well. LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your Italian family stories!

  25. Ron, my favorite spaghetti is angel hair, that I eat using a fork AND a spoon. Like you said, it makes it so much easier to eat. I've tried just using a fork and twirling it in the plate, but end up with way too much.

Have you ever had aglio e olio? That's my favorite way to eat angel hair. And my favorite pasta are those wide noodles used in lasagna. My mother makes the BEST lasagna in the world. I've been known to OD on her lasagna. lol!

The photos of your family ROCK, dude! You look just like your dad! And the ones of the family sitting around the table look so Italian. I can smell that garlic and basil from here!

  26. OMG Matt....I freaking LOVE more than my own life....AGLIO E OLIO! And I like it with a ton of garlic and basil. Oh, and a ton of grated Italian cheese!

Oooooooooooooooo, me too. I love me some lasagna! My brother Tom, who is a chef, makes excellent lasagna. He also makes delicious eggplant parmesan. To DIE for! In addition, his Italian Wedding Soup is phenomenal!

I know, everyone says that. And I do. But I also think I look like my mother as well (the lower half of my face).

  27. Dear god Ron, the photographs of your mother and father and family are so damn fabulous! I kept looking at them over and over to take in everything in the photos. You're right, back then people looked so classy when they dined; whether in a restaurant or a family gathering. I look at photos of my own family and think the same thing.

I wasn't born in the 50s, but I really love that period - the clothes, the makeup, the hair - Bellissima!

I don't use a fork and a spoon when I eat spaghetti, only a fork. I've tried, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

Favorites are: linguine, rigatoni, and penne. I am such a lover of carbs. Bread too!

Do you like rice? We Latino's eat rice like the Italians eat pasta. LOL!

Enjoyed this post, Ronald! I think I'll be making pasta tonight! xoxo

  28. Hola, Denise!

"Do you like rice? We Latino's eat rice like the Italians eat pasta. LOL!"

OMG, yes! A thousand times....YES! Besides pasta, rice is my other favorite CARB! And I love them all - white, brown, jasmine, and wild. I also love black beans and pinto! I always say that if I wasn't Italian, I'd be SPANISH because I adore their cuisine!

I never appreciated being a 50s baby until I got older and really looked at how many things about that era were wonderful. I agree...the clothes, makeup and hair....faaaaaaaaabulous!

Next to pasta, bread is my next favorite carb. I really have to watch myself because once I start eating it, I can't stop.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing, girl. Enjoy your pasta tonight...LOL!

  31. LOVE the family photos!!!
I have a passion for pasta like you! Not sure that I have one overall favorite though. I made spaghetti/meatballs last week, that's Ron's fav. Macaroni and cheese I did as a side dish on Easter because my granddaughter loves it. And maybe a couple weeks before that I made a pan of lasagna. I can eat pasta with olive oil, spices, cheese or with marinara or a heavier sauce. (An Italian girlfriend calls it 'gravy', but there are also arguments over who calls it what and where.)
We don't use a spoon. Maybe weird, but, I usually break the pasta in half as I'm adding it to boiling water and then since the strands aren't as long... I just use a fork to eat it, some of the strand just hanging off the fork. If I were out to dinner, or eating with others, I might twist or twirl with the fork.
    I've watched a couple of Vincenzo's videos, he's cool.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hello there, Mary!

    " I made spaghetti/meatballs last week."

Sounds HEAVENLY! Whenever my father made spaghetti for dinner, he would also make his infamous meatballs. OMG, they were BEYOND delicious. Crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. He would fry them in an iron skillet.

Love lasagna as well! Such a hearty Italian meal!

"(An Italian girlfriend calls it 'gravy', but there are also arguments over who calls it what and where.)"

OMG, I've heard people refer to it as 'gravy' as well. However, in our family it was always 'sauce.'

Several people in their comments have said that they too cut their spaghetti when they eat it. As I said, 'to each his/her own.'

I just recently discovered Vincenzo. I now follow him on You Tube. He's very amusing, isn't he?
