I'm sure you have all noticed the INSANE escalation in food prices when you go to the grocery store each week, right?
I certainly have.
I'm only one person, so it's not like I have to purchase food for a partner or family members, but I can even see how the cost of food has climbed Mount Everest.
I usually shop (at Trader Joe's and Mom's Organic Market) twice a week. I don't have a lot of space in my studio apartment kitchen, so I have to purchase in small amounts and shop more frequently. I sincerely don't mind that because I like my food (which consists primarily of vegetables) fresh. For instance, if I make pesto pasta with broccoli, I will purchase fresh broccoli and basil that day. I shop very much like a European.
I used to spend about $35.00 each time I shopped, which totaled (for the week) around $70.00, which is not bad at all, considering that I eat my meals at home.
HOWEVER...
Now when I shop, I've noticed a steady increase every time I go to the store. The increases were between 2-3 dollars for each product. Currently, I spend anywhere from $52.00 to $56.00, which totals over a hundred dollars each week.
And that total doesn't include personal products such as: shampoo, bath soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and paper goods, which have gotten SO FREAKING EXPENSIVE. While shopping for toilet paper at Target a few weeks ago, I discovered my favorite brand (Scott) had increased to $6.99 for FOUR rolls. That's when I started collecting leaves from the trees in our parks and thought about using them as toilet paper.
LOL!
Oh, and speaking of Target (which used to be my go-to store for great prices), I spotted a medium-sized bag of pretzels that had a price tag of $8.99. For PRETZELS!!!!
Lately, I find myself walking away from products and saying aloud, "There is no way in HELL I will pay those prices!"
Yes, the economy in this country is a total wreckage. And it's been that way for many years. However, I believe companies are simply jacking their prices (price gouging) and blaming it on inflation.
Isn't it something how when COVID hit in 2020, companies were kind, compassionate, and fair towards the people of this world? However, now, they are back to being self-serving and greedy. It seems to take a catastrophe to humble people. But how soon they forget.
Anyway, I thought it would be fun (and possibly depressing) to recall the price of food when I grew up in the 60s. Yes, I know prices are all relative to various decades, and what was less expensive back then was consistent with the average yearly income. But I still think essential food was much more affordable. As a kid, I remember grocery shopping with my mother and recalling how the cart was always filled to the brim, top, and bottom.
1960s -
*Note: Grade 'A' Large Eggs for only .79. Today, in Pennsylvania, a dozen eggs cost $4.52
*Note: A tube of Colgate toothpaste for only .99. The toothpaste I currently use (Crest) is $8.99
*Note: No, I didn't smoke cigarettes in the 60s, but my mother and father did. And yes, a pack was only .35. Later in life, I did smoke (for almost 40 years). And by the time I quit (in 2015), cigarettes were up to $8.00 a pack. I'm so glad I no longer smoke, both in money and health.
*Note: A can of Campbell's soup was .09. Today, a can is anywhere from $1.99 to $2.50
*Note: Beverages - Coffee, Pot - only .35!? A 12 oz. coffee here in Philly (before tax) is $2.45-$3.15.
McDonald's Prices 1965 (by the way, one of my first jobs was working at McDonald's)
Oh, and before cellphones, this is how we blocked calls in the 1960s...
Have a faaaabulous week, everyone! 💕
*Please feel free to share things you've noticed that have increased in price.
I was just talking with someone at work last week about how much the price of food has gone up over the past several months. Like you said, it's increased at least 2-3 dollars. Some things, even more. I miss living in NY and not having a car because it's such an added expense. Not only the car payments, but the insurance, gas, the repairs (which are NEVER covered under the warranty).
ReplyDeleteYou're so right about COVID and how companies had a much different tone. It seems that over the past four years, they're trying to make up for their losses.
Ron, I love the vintage photographs from the 60s! Everyone looked so nicely dressed a groomed. A lot like today LOL! Yes, I have noticed the increase in paper products as well. Ridiculous! And I use a lot of paper towels, so I go through them fast.
"Oh, and before cellphones, this is how we blocked calls in the 1960s..." --- Cracked me up!!!!!!
As always, I so enjoy reading your posts. I missed you not posting last week.
Have a wonderful week, Ron! xoxo
P.S. How the heat there? I hear it's extreme this summer.
Yes, Ron, I have noticed a BIG increase in food prices. Some people claim there is no longer an inflation, but I beg to differ with them. Like you, every time I buy food, the total cost goes up and up. And not only food, but a lot of things. Even my home internet service went up last month. It's crazy how much I pay for internet compared to what I used to pay. I keep holding my breath, waiting for my cellphone service to go up too.
ReplyDeleteI so enjoyed (and felt depressed - lol) seeing the items you posted about the cost of living in the 1960s. And you're right about the price of cars. My last car I bought used because there was no way I wanted to fork out monthly payments that high. Car payments on a new have gotten so ridiculous. They cost almost half my apartment rental!
Good post, Ron! x
"That's when I started collecting leaves from the trees in our parks and thought about using them as toilet paper." - Ron, you are so damn funny!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the price of laundry detergent?!?! I also shop a Target and the prices there of detergent are criminal! Like you, I refuse to pay high prices for certain items. I've been getting my laundry detergent at the Dollar General Store by my apartment. They have great brands that are very affordable.
Food? Yes, the price increases have been escalating for the past four years. And I love how some people say that the economy has never been better. REALLY?!? They must be very wealthy. Or BLIND.
How is it in Philadelphia? Has things like your rent gone up more than usual? Mine has.
I'm blown away by the cost of automobiles in the 1960s! You couldn't by a motorcycle today for $2,600! Thankfully, my car is paid off. But I dread having to get a new one in a few years.
Hola, Denise!
ReplyDelete" I miss living in NY and not having a car because it's such an added expense. Not only the car payments, but the insurance, gas, the repairs (which are NEVER covered under the warranty)."
OMG, I can't imagine having a car again and having to pay for gas, repairs, car insurance, car inspections, etc. And you're so right, whenever something happens to your car, it's NEVER covered under the insurance!
Yes, they are very much trying to make up for lost time. And I see that a lot, working in retail. I can't believe how much things have gone up in price. It's ludicrious. But what's really crazy is that people are BUYING them. I'm too stubborn. I refuse to buy certain things that are unreasonably priced.
Aw...thank you, girl! Yes, I took a longer break last week and didn't post. I've been watching a lot of new movies and TV series at night this summer. Some really great ones too!
OMG, yes, the heat here has been BEYOND horrendous. And I know it's hot because people who normally LOVE summertime are complaining about it. I just want summer to be over and autumn to arrive. I'm tired of sweating.
Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaaabulous week!

Hey there, Candice!
ReplyDelete"Some people claim there is no longer an inflation, but I beg to differ with them."
Me too! It cracks me up when people say that. I'm like, what planet are you living on that you don't see an inflation?!
". Even my home internet service went up last month. It's crazy how much I pay for internet compared to what I used to pay. I keep holding my breath, waiting for my cellphone service to go up too."
OH MY GOD, I can't believe you mentioned your internet service because the same thing happened to me. My last bill was almost $100.00 for just internet service. I was so pissed. I am now looking to leave Verizon and try a Wifi provider internet service because it's so much cheaper. And the internet service I have is so unreliable too. I have to reboot my moden quite often to restart it. It's such a pain in my ass.
Good for you! When I had a car, I bought used as well. In fact, I never bought a new car, always used. I wanted low payments and to pay it off quick.
Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a grrrreat week!
X
Hellooooooooooo, Robert!
ReplyDeleteHA! I just resist saying that! But it's half true because I actually thought of using LEAVES!
"Have you seen the price of laundry detergent?!?! I also shop a Target and the prices there of detergent are criminal! Like you, I refuse to pay high prices for certain items. I've been getting my laundry detergent at the Dollar General Store by my apartment. They have great brands that are very affordable."
OMG, yes, the price of laundry detergent IS criminal! And Target is the worst. Thank you for mentioning Dollar General because I have one not far from where I live, so I will definately go there and check out the prices. Lately, I've been finding detergent ON SALE at CVS, which is usually over-priced. The last time I got detergent there, I think I paid $3.95 for Tide, which I thought was an excellent price.
"And I love how some people say that the economy has never been better. REALLY?!? They must be very wealthy. Or BLIND."
LOL! I know, I've heard the same thing from people here as well.
"How is it in Philadelphia? Has things like your rent gone up more than usual? Mine has."
Prices are insane here. However, one area that I feel blessed about is my rent. I've lived in this building for many, many years, so the company does not raise my rent a lot. Maybe $20.00 per year? That's all. However, if someone new comes into this building new, they are charged the going rates. I wanted to move this year and looked for various studio apartments in the city and outside the city, and the prices were insane. And not only the prices, but it's what they demanded that you put down before you sign the lease. However, I'm working on something at the moment that might pane out in the future.
Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great week!
X
Ron, you are so lucky because new apartment rental prices are threw the roof! Like you said, not only the price, but it's also what they need before you even sign a lease. Also, you now have to pay for trash removal, water, heat, sewage, parking, and electricty. Nothing is included anymore.
ReplyDeleteRobert you are so right. And one of the advantages of my apartment building is that ALL of those things (with the exception of electricty) are included in my rent. I feel so lucky!
ReplyDeleteLove this topic, Ron! And it's a hot one for me because I can understand price increases, they're inevitable. But what's been going on with our economy and the MASSIVE hikes in prices is preposterous. And I'm with you, I think (know) companies are using inflation for price gouging. And it's happening every week. I've had to cut back on certain things and budget my money. So far so good. But who knows what's going to happen the remainder of this year and next year.
ReplyDeleteI never used to use coupons, but now I'm using them at certain stores because they really help cut down the cost. Since when did an avocado cost almost FOUR dollars per avocado? Even the lower-cost places like Trader Joe's has increased a lot of their pricing.
And have you seen the price increases in airfare? Insane! And what's ironic is that even though the prices have gotten higher, the airline service has gotten LOWER. I dread flying now. I use Uber quite often, and even that has gonw up in price. Nothing is cheap anymore. Even the Dollar Store have gone up to $5.00 and more!
"Oh, and before cellphones, this is how we blocked calls in the 1960s..." --- ROFLMAO!
Ron, even Costco prices have gone up. It's crazy how stores are all following what other stores are doing, by jacking up their prices. Another thing I noticed this year is that my health insurance premiums have gone up, as well as my renters insurance.
ReplyDeleteOh, and this year when I filed my taxes for 2023, I discovered that I OWED money. That's never been the case with me. I've always gotten money back.
It seems that the only thing that's gone down in price is my bank account balance. Lol!
Average rent in the1960's was $71.00?!? I wish that were NOW.
Ron, I used to smoke too, for many, many years. When cigarettes when up to $12.00 (in NYC), that's when I quit. Like you, glad I did. Did you do it cold-turkey?
ReplyDeleteThankfully I don't own a car, so I save money that way. But everything else seems to have gone up in price. Every time I do my weekly food shopping, I can see the prices moving upward. I very rarely eat out, but I hear from people I work with that restaurant food (and fast food) are higher.
And do you know what I find ironic? For all the price hiking that's been going on, wages have not increase to match the rising costs. If anything, companies are cutting back on hiring to save money.
Crazy world right now, isn't it?
Morning, Abby!
ReplyDeleteEven Costco? I've never shopped there but I know it's supposed to be a store where buying bulk is supposed to save you money.
"Another thing I noticed this year is that my health insurance premiums have gone up, as well as my renters insurance."
Me as well. My health insurance premiums went up, but (thankfully) my renters insurance did not.
"Oh, and this year when I filed my taxes for 2023, I discovered that I OWED money. That's never been the case with me. I've always gotten money back."
OMG, me too! Never have I ever owed money when filing my taxes, but this year (for 2023) I did. I didn't owe a lot, but I still thought it was strange that I didn't get any money back. I'm sure this year will be the same.
Ha! I know, can you believe that price for rent? I wish that were NOW too!
Thanks so much for stopping by, Abby. Have a great day and week!
X
You got that right, Ron! The rising cost of food has gotten ballistic. Between my girlfriend and I, we spend around $180 per week on food. We also have two cats, and the cost of pet food has gotten crazy as well. Even though there are two of us living together, which can be costly, at least we have two salaries coming in. I feel bad for the people who support themselves because they are responsible for everything. I applaud you for doing it on your own.
ReplyDeleteTough times we're in right now. And in so many ways.
"That's when I started collecting leaves from the trees in our parks and thought about using them as toilet paper." - Hahahahahahaha! Only YOU can find humor is this!
Looking at the pricing from the 60's, I'm blown away how the cost of living has increased over the years. WOW!
Excellent post topic, dude! I sure hope things turn around (even a little bit) this new year.
Hey there, Clair!
ReplyDeleteYes! I too remember when cigs in New York City went up to $12.00! I was in Duane Reade one day, and saw behind the checkout counter the price on Marlboro cigarettes. YIKES! At that time, they were $8.00 in Philadelphia. Yes, I quit cold-turkey. Between the cost of cigarettes and starting to feel the effects of smoking for so many years, I had had enough. So, I just quit. It was in the summer of 2015. And I've never smoked one since.
" I very rarely eat out, but I hear from people I work with that restaurant food (and fast food) are higher."
Me as as well. But then again, I've never been one who enjoys eating out. I'm not a fan of restaurants.
"For all the price hiking that's been going on, wages have not increase to match the rising costs. If anything, companies are cutting back on hiring to save money."
Soooooooooooooooooo true! And I hear so many people saying that A LOT lately. I feel so blessed that I have a part-time job that pays well.
Crazt indeed!
Always great reading yoru comments, Abby. Thanks so much for stopping by!
Have a great week!

Hiya Matt!
ReplyDeleteTrue, sometimes two people (with two salaries), even though it's more food, can be a bit easier. I'm pretty good with budgeting my money and cutting corners on stuff. I'm so use to the days when I was a theater actor and didn't always have a large steady income. It taught me to adapt and adjust.
And yes, feeding two cats ADDS to the cost of weekly/monthly food. Years ago, I also had two cats, so I know how it can add up. And not only food, but cat litter as well.
"Looking at the pricing from the 60's, I'm blown away how the cost of living has increased over the years. WOW!"
I know, isn't it shocking to see the differences. Granted, yearly salaries were much lower then. However, I still think that essential food was much more reasonably priced.
Me too. I hope things turn around this year for our economy AND all the tension going on.
Thanks sooooooooo much for stopping by and sharing, Matt! Have a great day and week!

I'm with you on the leaves.🤣
ReplyDeleteSide note- did you notice how big the burgers looked in the McDonalds ad??
Our grocery bill has gone up by at least 30 dollars per week. So that's 120 dollars per month. That's a lot of money! I'm frugal, so if my bill has gone up, I can't imagine how much someone who is not frugal is spending.
Such a great post, my friend. 😘❤️
"I'm with you on the leaves.🤣"
ReplyDeleteLOL! It's cheaper than buying TP, right?
"Side note- did you notice how big the burgers looked in the McDonalds ad??"
OMG, yes! That's how big they were when I used to work at McDonald's as a kid. Now, the burgers have shrunk to the size of a quater!
"That's a lot of money! I'm frugal, so if my bill has gone up, I can't imagine how much someone who is not frugal is spending." - 30 dollars per week extra is a lot!
You and I are twin souls because I'm frugle too. Which is why it kills me to see how much the cost of food has gone up. And I think because I live in a city, the prices are even higher.
Much thanks for stopping by, my dear friend! Have a fantabulous week!
X
Ron, it's so depressing to realize just how much the cost of goods has increased. I, too, have noticed it, and Domer and I regularly commiserate over it. Thank you for confirming it!
ReplyDeleteBoth of us love fresh fruits, veggies, and healthy food. Golly, it's nearly $4 for a loaf of bread these days -- and I don't live in a major city! Everything you pick up costs more than it used to be -- $4 for a box of cereal, $5 a pound for ground beef, shoot, $2 for bologna (that's one reason I quit buying that stuff, ha!). A box of tissues that used to sell for 99 cents now is up to $1.50; even the Monkey's food costs nearly $55 for a 16-lb. bag.
Both Domer and I are very frugal shoppers; nevertheless, it's harder and harder to compare prices. I laugh at the ad where a store employee runs around with a new price gun, raising the prices of even stuff people have picked up but haven't yet taken to the checkout lane!
I rarely eat out, preferring to cook my own food (where I can better control the ingredients so my IBS stays under control), but I can only shudder at the cost of menu items I've seen. Great post, my friend. Stay cool! xx
Hey there, Debbie!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it sad and depressing to witness how MUCH the cost of goods has increased? And I feel that it's happening more rapidly in the past several months. I spend my whole time shopping with my eyes opened wide, in shock of the prices.
Even though I don't eat meat, I HAVE noticed how the price of things like beef, chicken, and cold-cuts have sky-rocketed. And speaking of "healthy food", it seems that those items are even MORE expensive. The "Whole Foods", here in Philly, charges astronomical prices for their organic products. Which is why I refuse to shop there.
"even the Monkey's food costs nearly $55 for a 16-lb. bag."
WOW!
I too am a frugel shopper. And I always have been. But it's getting harder and harder to BE frugel LOL!
" I laugh at the ad where a store employee runs around with a new price gun, raising the prices of even stuff people have picked up but haven't yet taken to the checkout lane!"
OMG, that sounds so funny (and true)! I will have to look for that ad online because I would love to see it!
Me neither, I don't eat out. The only time I will eat something that I have not prepared myself is perhaps a salad that I get at Sweet Greens, where you can pick and choose every item you would like in your salad. But even those are very pricey.
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, my friend. Appreciate that! Have a great week!

P.S. Good news! We are finally getting a break from the hideious heat for the next two days. The temps drop down into the low 70s. Yahoooooooooooo!
Ron, I just had to stop back to let you know that last night after work, I ran into Ulta to pick up a few things and noticed that my favorite face moisturizer went UP in price ($3.00). Grrrrrrrrrrrr! I immediately thought of you and this post. If it goes up any higher, I'm going to have to take out a persona loan for my beauty products. LOL!
ReplyDelete" If it goes up any higher, I'm going to have to take out a personal loan for my beauty products. LOL!"
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Isn't it horrible how EVERYTHING is on the rise? Being in "the business" I see this happening so much. Particularly the last two years.
Ron, being that you and I are from the same generation and grew up in the 60s, it was such a blast (and depressing) to see these ads and what food cost back then. 79 cents for a dozen eggs and 47 cents for a gallon of milk!!!! And speaking of milk, do you remember when the we had milk delivered (weekly) to you home in glass bottles by the milkman? It was 35 cents per bottle.
ReplyDelete"I believe companies are simply jacking their prices (price gouging) and blaming it on inflation." --- damn right! And I have a feeling it's only going to get more extreme the remainder of this year, and possibly next year. I can just feel it.
I remember my grandmother saying that when she and my grandfather purchased their first rowhome (1920s), it was a little over $4,000. Can you believe that?
Seeing the rotory phone you pictured brought back memories of one in our home. And we only had two phones. One in the kitchen and one in my parents bedroom.
Fun post, Ron! Both hubby and I enjoyed it. xox
Helloooooooo there, Elaine!
ReplyDeleteI freaking LOVED your comment about the things we experienced in the 60s! YES!!!! I most certainly do remember milk being delivered by the milkman. In fact, I still remember hearing the sound of the glass bottles of milk clicking together as the milkman places them in the therm box outside our front door early in the morning. I also remember how delicious an COLD the milk was!
"And I have a feeling it's only going to get more extreme the remainder of this year, and possibly next year. I can just feel it."
I have that same feeling. I'm just holding my breath.
"I remember my grandmother saying that when she and my grandfather purchased their first rowhome (1920s), it was a little over $3,000. Can you believe that?"
Isn't it something how much the cost of living has escalated since then? Today, $3,000. would get you a single tooth inplant. HA!
OMG, yes....we had only two phones in our home as well. And I remember the one in our kitchen had such a short telephone cord that you had to STAND the whole time you were talking on the phone. I even remember the color of it....GREEN! My parents had a blue phone in their room!
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your memories. LOVED them! Have a great rest of your week!
X
Ron, we had a yellow phone (to match the mustard appliances) in our kitchen, and my parents had an ivory-colored one in their bedroom. And it was a Princess phone, remember those?
ReplyDeleteHA! Absolutely! I clearly remember the "Princess style" phones! That's the style my parent had in their bedroom as well. X
ReplyDeleteHellooooo, Ron! Long lost friend finally making some stops around Blogville. Can I come in for a coffee? No, you can't spare a cup with these high prices... ok, a glass of water will be fine. Or maybe I'll just bring wine and we'll day drink to forget how crazy everything is out there. LOL
ReplyDeleteSince I go to a variety of stores I've definitely noticed the increases. Some still offer fairly good prices on certain products but you practically have to put it all on a spreadsheet and make a AAA travel plan to navigate the roads to get to where the best sales are. I do think in part, as you said, many companies are just price gouging and will continue to do so until consumers say NO and stop buying certain products. We've already noticed the 'shrinkflation' stuff... smaller amount of item in same package. Grrr Well, luckily, we're still able to splurge on some things so I'm gonna spend stupid amounts of $$ on a few favorites and if our kids have to take care of us someday I hope the bread they provide will be TJ's focaccia and the water will have a slice of lemon or lime in it. haha
Loved all the old photos of prices!!
Hellooooooooooooooooooo there, Mary! So great to see you, my friend!
ReplyDelete"but you practically have to put it all on a spreadsheet and make a AAA travel plan to navigate the roads to get to where the best sales are."
OMG, that cracked me up because not only is it funny, but TRUE!
And yes, some stores still offer fairly good prices on certain products, but (for me anyway) even they go up and down.
"so until consumers say NO and stop buying certain products. We've already noticed the 'shrinkflation' stuff... smaller amount of item in same package. Grrr"
You're absolutely right. And that's why I very often walk away from over-priced items and refuse to purchase them. And you're also right about the SHRINKFLATION because I've noticed the same thing.
Like you, there are still some things I spend (spurge) the money on (like certain vegetables I can't live without) because I just have to have them.
"if our kids have to take care of us someday I hope the bread they provide will be TJ's focaccia and the water will have a slice of lemon or lime in it. haha"
HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!
Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! I'm so happy that we finally got some relief from the horrendous heat and humidity. God, I cannot WAIT for autumn!
X
Hi Ron! I'm back!!!! YES...........food prices are insane! It is shocking how much money just the basics cost now. Eggs $4.00-$5.00. And my Pepperidge Farm whole wheat bread is $5. Would you believe I pay almost $5 for a half gallon of milk?? It's a lactose-free one, but still! One grocery bag can easily run you $50. It's terrible and I hope people think about this when they vote!
ReplyDeleteYou touched on this, but the cost of personal hygiene items like shower gel is out of control. I'm now just buying cheap stuff from the Dollar Store (which is now $1.25). I found 4-5 oz.Colgate toothpaste for my husband there for $1.25 which is a really good deal. I've started buying the laundry detergent sheets on Amazon, which is saving me money, too. Remember all the stuff that used to be 99 cents? A four-pack of toilet paper, a bottle of nail polish, a loaf of bread. Those days are long gone. I knew when Covid happened that everyone would use that as an excuse to raise prices and lower customer service. As I saw someone say online, our country is turning into a third world country before our eyes. Sorry for my negativity . . . it's been a bad month! I'm hoping for an attitude adjustment soon! LOL! XO
WELCOME BACK, MY FRIEND!!!!! You have been on my mind all week, wondering when you would be blogging again because I think you said the middle of August. Anyway, great to see you and I hope you enjoyed your time off.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it BEYOND crazy how the price of everything has gone through the roof?
"One grocery bag can easily run you $50. It's terrible and I hope people think about this when they vote!"
Funny you mentioned that because I went to Trader Joe's yesterday to pick up some stuff and my total came to $56.85. And that was just for ME. I can't imagine shopping for someone else. And YES...I do hope people think about this when they vote. And I have a feeling that September, October, and November are going to be brutal when it comes to all the animosity between Americans. It's already started here in Philly. You can feel it in the air too!
I too have been buying stuff at the Dollar Store. I go to one in the city called, Dollar General, and I get some really good prices on personal hygiene items and household cleaning products. I get my laundry detergent there because it's only $5.75.
And you're not negative at all, it's just that when we look at what's happening to our country, you can't help but SEE what's happening and be honest. That's the problem with Philadelphia, everyone here acts like nothing is wrong by pretending it doesn't exist.
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing you thoughts and feelings on this topic. You've added much!
Have a great week!
