As most of you have probably already noticed, not only from my posts, but also from the comments I leave on your blogs….I have a serious love affair going on with exclamation marks.

Let me clarify by saying that it’s more of an addictive love affair.

I don’t know whether it’s because I’m Italian, and that Italians like to talk with there hands, but using an exclamation mark when expressing myself through writing makes me feel like I’m using my hands to talk.

Yesterday, I left comment for someone on my previous post and when I went back to proofread it I noticed that every single sentence was completed with one of these….!

WTF?

I swear to god, if there wasn’t such a thing as an exclamation mark on my computer keyboard, I don’t think I could even speak. Being a passionate person, exclamation marks give me a means to transfer that passion through my words.

I get so excited when leaving a comment that my adrenalin pumps through my veins at warp speed; grabbing my index finger and pulling it to the exclamation key like The North Magnetic Pole.

Whenever I go back to reread a comment I left for someone, I try to remove some of my explanation marks before publishing it, but I just can’t seem to bring myself to do it.

I’m seriously ADDICTED!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve never been one to use punctuation or grammar in the supposedly correct way, because I truly feel it confines me. When it comes to the way I write, I’m totally irreverent.

You may have also noticed I enjoy using CAPS.

I know that caps are predominately used when someone is angry and yelling, but for me I enjoy using them whenever I get a zestful communicative ERECTION that needs to be shared.

One of my dear blogging buddies, Jeff and I, have a running joke with one another where he’ll leave me a comment, and in his P.S. closing will sometimes leave me a plethora of these (!) in fear I will run out of my allotted quota.

And what he doesn’t know is that I’m storing them away in an old shoebox for when the time may come if (god forbid) punctuation does away with exclamation marks.

But once I run out of those, I seriously think I won’t be able to blog anymore.

Because I won’t be able to speak……

  2. Good morning!!! I, too, love to use many exclamation marks!!! (I'm leaving you a few extra for safe keeping!!!) I was told that one at the end of a sentence should suffice. But I, like you, think they give our readers an idea of how passionate we are about certain things. One ! only gives me an impression that what is written is slightly more than a statement, when what I write is usually very important to me!!! I feel the same about ALL CAPS!!! To me, it's not yelling but a form of exclamation as well.
I'm so glad that someone else feels like I do about grammar. Now, spelling, to me, is another matter!!! It drives me crazy when words are misspelled!!!
Thank you for this thought-provoking post this morning & have a lovely day, my friend!!!!!

  3. I am guilty of overusing exclamation marks myself. I get excited, what can I say? All CAPS is so passé. Now that we have rich text and XHTML, there are better ways to emphasize.

  4. You are one of the few people who can get away with all the exclamation points and caps. I never feel like you are yelling just passionate about what you are saying. Plus, it always makes me feel like you really care about what I have to say. I can just see you with a big smile on your face, excited to continue the conversation. So keep with the !!!!!

  5. OMG, RON! You had me laughing like a hyena with this one...and it's not even 7am!!

"...a zestful communicative ERECTION... Oh, give me AIR!!!

I'm with you, bay-bee...between italics...and bold and ellipsis...and exclamation marks!!!

How else would we make our POINT???

I look at it this way. Which sounds nicer & friendler:
    1) I can't believe you're coming tomorrow!!!!
    2) I can't believe you're coming tomorrow.

    Uh-huh. #1=happy & excited. #2=Groan/ugh/crap.

    HA!

Thanks for the extra (!)...I can definitely use them!!!!!!

I totally agree on all that you shared about exclamation marks and CAPS. It such a wonderful form of communicating how we feel. And one sometime doesn't cut it. I need more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG...me too about spelling. I'm such a terrible speller, so I try to check and recheck my posts before publishing them. Sometimes I'll even find a misspelled word two days AFTER I publish a post and makes me INSANE!

As always...thank you for stopping by, my friend!

    Have a lovely day!

    HA!

True...too many CAPS is overload. I try to use BOLD text sometimes if I want to highlight a point. There a some posts I read that are written with 50% CAPS and I find them hard to read.

Thank you for dropping by, MJ!

  15. Oh my GOODNESS!!! This is another thing we have in COMMON!!!!

I, too, show my love with exclamation marks and caps. I never even CONSIDERED that we might run out!!!

Thing of it this way... would you rather be one of those annoying people who finishes every sentence with a question mark? So even if you're making a statement it sounds like a question?

I hate people that do that?

Makes me want to go smack happy? Use my exclamation marks as weapons? Perhaps get an air dart gun and stick people with exclamation darts?

Have a wonderful day my friend? Talk to you soon?

See... now don't you feel better about the exclamation marks???

  17. Haha...I rarely use exclamation points. They are too "happy" I guess you could say. I'm not an outgoing person so I don't write any differently then when I talk. I'm very soft spoken and reserved most of the time unless provoked to act otherwise. But you, Ron, I believe you could pull off any incorrectly used grammar because you make it all seem so amusing. (: I love reading your blogs, humor isn't my forte but I need a good laugh now and again. (:

  25. k. I'm about to use all caps AND exclamation marks--I just LOST MY COMMENT!

    RAWRRRR!!!!!!

    *sigh*
I'm a hand talker--and consequently a finger to keyboard talker. I talk like I type...there's not a lot of difference in how I communicate here and how I communicate there.
Don't ever ask me to sit on my hands and have a passionate, honest conversation. The hands HAVE to go. That's just how I'm made.

No worry for me to see either when it comes to you, sir.
Now, in the case of others--that could be an entirely different story.
I guess it has to do with 'know your blogger'....

    How weird is that?! :-/

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hiya Mel!!!!!

You have no idea how much I thought of YOU when I wrote this post.

I know of no other blogger who writes with as many CAPS and exclamation marks as I do, except you!

You are SOOOOOOO expressive in your posts and that's why I love them. I can actually feel YOU in your writing.

Maybe it's because we're both Libras. Or maybe it's the fact that we both like to talk with our hands. But I think it's delightfully ironic how the two us write very similar, using punctuation.

    And I think your right...

    ...'know your blogger.

Because it could mean something entirely different coming from someone else.

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for stopping by and adding your thoughts to this post, dear lady.

    LOVED em'!

And yes, I am still using the question mark as a crutch to get me through.

  33. if i am in the mood to type, which i am not lately, i will reach over and use them lots but have never known anyone quite like you and your erection- causing use of them....and i love that you do, you are just you, i love all the bold stuff too, it gets the point across just in case i am sleeping or they are sleeping...

i don't know ... i am one who likes to use the ... like this.... in case you hadn't noticed...i use them all the time and actually have to go back and rewrite things because if i don't the whole thing is filled with them....like now, see? well, there's a blip but you get the idea...i think it's because i don't like to do caps because i have a rib condition that sometimes makes it hard to actually reach up and make them on the keyboard so i don't like to use just ONE . because then i have to start the next word with a capital, right? how weird are humans? let me count the millions of ways we can think of to be weird...i also think if we are truly trying to be who we are through this rather stilted medium, we have to find ways to be who we are and show it, perhaps like this♥

    :D

Isn't it funny how we all use some sort of punctuation that expresses how we talk?

I love how you use these...

I use them to, when I make a pause in my thinking. It's a great way to break up my thoughts.

For me, writing for a blog has actually taught me to communicate clearer in my everyday life. I have a tendency to talk very fast, so blogging has taught me to slow down.
