Let me start off by saying that I LOVE Starbucks.

Truly, I do.

In fact, if it wasn’t for my daily dose of Starbucks coffee I don’t think my circulatory system would circulate.

There is nothing on this planet more “life force giving” as when Starbucks coffee hits my bloodstream; making my heart race, my hands shake, my teeth chatter, and my pupils dilate, right before my eyes start spinning around in my head like a slot machine in Atlantic City.

I feel renewed and totally rebalanced.

And I think it’s actually caused me to grow more hair on my chest, so now my pecs look like a double-dense furry futon mattress.

Starbucks brews coffee the way I like it…

…strong and delightfully EVIL.

However, I don’t know about where any of you live, but here in Philly there is a Starbucks located on every corner.

* ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, but there’s at least one on every fifth corner.

God forbid you have to walk more than two feet to find a Starbucks.

I googled the city with the most Starbucks and Vegas was #1. Seattle and Portland were 2 and 3.

I’m not surprised that Vegas is #1, considering that caffeine must make people gamble faster.

Now, my question is this…

…how the HELL do all these stores make a profit by flooding the market with too much availability?

Oh, that’s right I forgot…

…they charge $4.95 for a venti Frappuccino.

One of life’s luxuries

  1. peet's is very slowly making a dent in starbucks here and some have closed...i happen to not drink coffee now and think they make terrible coffee but their chais are pretty good but not as good as mine ;) maybe i am just a little teeny bit picky...

anyway, glad you have some every foot or so as you don't want to have to walk too far for it...why don't you make some at home and save yourself some cash, serious cash, it really adds up and they charge way too much for such dregs as they serve up...i am convinced the reason they have all those sugary drinks is because they are trying to cover up that coffee...

did i tell you i don't like their coffee? ;)

have a great week, been missing you but did appreciate your coming by with your usual sweet comments on my posts...so thank you much, dear man that you are with fuzzy double pecs or whatever you said you now have grown! ......... ♥

  2. First, love the Escher take on Starbucks. Way to go.

Second, I really don't like their hot coffee. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but it's too strong for my liking.

But, you have found my Achilles' heel -- the Frappuccino. Oh how I love the decadence that is the Frappuccino. That's on my Christmas list -- a gift card to Starbucks because I cannot part with a fiver every time I need a fix.

Quick! Listen. Did you hear that? That was the sound of my purse strings snapping shut.

Between you and me, I go to Costco and buy a $1.65 Mochacino at the food court. Not quite the same, but it works in a pinch.

  3. I kept the one in Vegas going in 2002. Two things you wouldn't believe:

    1. Lots and lots of people gamble at 3 in the morning, me among them.

    2. The lines at Starbucks are loooong at that hour.

    Craziest thing I've ever seen.

  4. Yup. I indulge. Now, granted there's no Starbucks in this bitty town--for that I'm grateful.
I do, however, have bags of their coffee....which I consider a treat in my home....mostly.
Much more of a treat when it's made FOR me, truth be told.
And himself makes a mean cuppa French Pressed coffee.

    Yup....think I'll go steal a cup! LOL

  6. I have spent many wonderful hours in and around Starbucks. The aroma of the coffee and the warmth of the place is great when you want to chill out or have a conversation with a friend. There in nothing that can compare to sipping a Mocha Grande Fatte Latte in that paper cup that renders you hands in operable because of the three degree burns on your fingertips. And the whipped cream on that Verdi Latte Hooray Cappucinno ~ Bellisimo. Then when you bite into that biscoti and crack your two front teeth because it is like bitting down on a sidewalk ~ Ah, just the thought of that conjures up the phone number of my dentist. The dark rich color of the coffee makes one starts to salivate just looking at it.
It is then when I reach into my pocket and notice that I do not have enough even for the down payment for this caffine fix. That is when I head south out the door and go to the next most popular Coffee Haven in the Northeast.

    Dunkin Donuts.

    Pass the cruller.

  7. Ron: It's good to be here again! And to read yet another compelling post. Ah, Starbuck's, the ubiquitous scourge of Americana. I remember going to a Seattle strip mall and finding a SBUX on each end! Funny, both of them were crowded (I had to check). You can imagine what foreigners think of this phenomenon...yet another disease from the New World....Best to you, my friend. EFH

  8. My daughter now has her own Starbucks routine...thanks to her father. When she spends the night with him on their way to school in the morning they stop at Starbucks.

She orders a tall hot chocolate at 130 degrees.

    Yup.
    Great.
    Starbucks AND cashmere.

I've gotta figure out how to make more money...

  9. "One of life's luxuries, indeed!"

I remember when my mom and I were planning our trip to Vegas, we had to Mapquest where all the Starbucks were. The woman canNOT be farther than a 12-foot radius from that place.

I don't like their plain coffee (too strong!) but I lurve the milky, foamy, creamy, sugary drinks. Their new Caramel Brulee is right up my alley, but I also love the Caramel Macchiato and any latte. As long as it's made with whole milk and whipped cream!

And they ARE a luxury. I can't afford those fancy drinks more than once or twice a month. My mom, however, despite living on a fixed income, drinks one EVERY DAY. She'd rather go without food than her beloved latte.

  10. there are only 2 Starbucks nears me, but then again I live in the bowel section of NJ

one is inside Barnes & Noble which I love but since they're in reading/library mode they're slow as shit

the other is in a tiny strip mall (aren't strip malls lovely? all the crap of a mall with no protection from weather) - it's way too small for the number of people it attracts and getting out of the parking lot is a bitch - I have to be careful not to spill my precious liquid as I hold it and the steering wheel while giving someone the finger and cutting off a landscaping truck

we do have a Dunkin' DoNuts every 10 feet - they're getting so packed in that you can go thru the drive thru of one and arrive at the door of another!!

  11. Hiya Linda!

Yes, I've also noticed that a few have closed here in Philly too! I honestly think it's because they open them too close together.

did i tell you i don't like their coffee?

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I know SEVERAL people who feel the same about Starbucks. They feel it's WAY too strong. And it is!

I make French press when I'm at home, however, while I'm at work I have my second cup of the day at Starbucks. But, my god...their medium size is over $2.00!!!

    Oy chee mamba!

Thanks for stopping by, dear Linda!

I'll be back to my regular posting schedule after the holidays. For the next two weeks I'm going to be VERY busy, so I may be a little more scarce.

    Happy Monday to you!

  12. Hey Cardiogirl!

    Great to see ya!

Yes...I agree, I love the Escher photo too! When I saw it online I NABBED it - it was perfect for what I wanted to say with this post.

MANY people feel the same way about Starbucks coffee - WAY too strong. I had a friend who would ask for half coffee, half hot water to help dilute it.

Can you believe I've NEVER had a Frappuccino??? I hear they're FAAABULOUS! I only drink straight coffee. Yesterday, while I was at work I noticed the unbelievable price of one, so I had to post about it. OMG...I can get a complete lunch for $5.00!

That's on my Christmas list -- a gift card to Starbucks because I cannot part with a fiver every time I need a fix.

    HA!...you GO, girl!

I feel the same way about certain things.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by today!

  13. Howdy Kathy!

I kept the one in Vegas going in 2002.

    HA!

I lived in Vegas for a summer and I was AMAZED at how busy the casino's were 24-7!!!

Both my parents were HUGE gamblers and my mother always said her favorite time to hit the casino's was early in the AM.

The lines at Starbucks are loooong at that hour.

SEE!...I guess caffeine does make people gamble faster!

    HA!

    ALWAYS great seeing ya, Kath!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

aaaaahhh....I knew you would share my passion for java!!!

I do, however, have bags of their coffee....which I consider a treat in my home....mostly.

A few years ago, I bought myself a pound bag for my French press and it was HEAVENLY! It's probably a lot cheaper to drink it that way, but I'm like you - my second cup of day, I prefer having it made for me!!!

    Yup....think I'll go steal a cup!

    HA!....enjoy, dear lady!!!

    Thanks for dropping by, today!

naaah....I know a lot of people who don't drink coffee. Some people prefer tea. I sometimes drink herbal tea in the evenings - Chamomile.

I've never heard of Caribou coffee!?! I'll have to google that.

    Thanks for stopping by, girl!

  16. Coffee and I don't get along very well so I have to say that I've never been in a Starbucks. XD Where I live we don't even have one. The nearest thing to a Starbucks here is a Tim Hortons and that was just put up last year. I don't go there either. My pocketbook won't let me. XD Some may say I'm missing out, but if I need some caffeine, I'll find another way to get it into my system. XD

I SO know what you mean because the same thing happens to me whenever I get just a plain cup. Last week they were out of cup guards and I burnt the shit out of my palm!!

Then when you bite into that biscoti and crack your two front teeth because it is like bitting down on a sidewalk.

    Bwhahahahahahhaahhaha!

OMG...their biscotti's are one of my favorites (especially the caramel ones), but BROTHER...are the HARD or what????? You have to dip them for an hour to get them soft!

I know...their coffee is VERY strong and not a favorite of MANY people, so I can totally understand.

  21. OH how I love.love.love Starbucks!!!
Except I don't go there for the coffee. It's wayyyyy tooooo strong for me. My heart races just smelling it from the parking lot. LOL
But how I do enjoy the hot chai and hot cocoa drinks. Venti of course! Mmmmm.
Here in South Jersey we have... 1 Starbucks about 10 mins. drive, 2 within 15 minutes, 2 within 20 mins. and that's just off the top of my head. Some of them are inside of Barnes and Noble, some just the individual store but they are all wonderful. The staff for the most part are very friendly, altho I do find the actual Starbuck store employees to be a little faster workers. But it doesn't matter as much because I usually like to sit and read anyway so am there for awhile.
The prices though! OMG! I dare not even try to add up what I have spent on drinks. But we all have things we splurge on. I don't get my hair or nails done at a salon so the books and the cocoas are a trade-off I guess?
Awhile back, a blogger in Texas, who also adores chai from Starbucks said they were running a promotion that if you sang your drink order to the barista you got it for free! How funny!

  24. As a resident of the Portland, OR area, I can tell you finding a cup of hot Jo is as easy as touching the tip of your nose. It's unfreaking believable how may Starbucks there are around here. Not just them, but plenty of other coffee houses too. From the Peet's and other such big companies to many, many smaller independents.

I'm convinced if you drew blood from the majority of the population around here it would come out of the veins brown.

Same here, Jeff! We have coffee houses everywhere. And they're alway packed with people drinking coffee and using their Wifi! However, I've notice that many of them close within a year because of the bigger coffee chains.

OMG...that's too funny because Dianne and I said the same thing! It must be something about the Starbucks inside a Barnes & Noble that makes them slower.

Except I don't go there for the coffee. It's wayyyyy tooooo strong for me. My heart races just smelling it from the parking lot.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I know....so many people say the same thing about their coffee. And it IS strong, so I can totally understand. I'm like most Europeans...I LOVE strong coffee. I also prefer my wine red and heavier - like a Cabernet.

Must be the Italian in me!

I agree, M...I don't spend money on a lot of things, so my indulgence in coffee is something I really enjoy. Coffee is such a passion for me.

And you love it soooo much, you even Googled it to see what city had the most of them? Are you disappointed that Philly wasn't in the top 3? Well, NY wasn't either. Those ppl in Oregon have to do SOMETHING to stay awake...with all that dreary rain and fog....and...rain.

That photo at the top made me a little dizzy...like a funhouse mirror.

I'm still surprised when I see the Starbucks and Dunkin coffees in the market. I can't imagine how it could taste the same...don't they use some magical, addictive, unknown-additive to keep us coming back for more?

I was *just* talking about how there are TOO MANY Starbucks shops in our town.

I live in a wee tiny town... we have about 20,000 people. And we have two count 'em TWO Starbucks!!! WTF!!!???

I refuse to go there. But mostly because I'm cheap and reFUSE to pay $6 for a coffee. Yup. $6!!!! And THAT is if you don't want any of the special mumbo jumbo they try to upsell you with. Like... cream and sugar. lol

Good grief. We have two of 'em and I have never given them a penny of mine. Woot! Talk about a righteous boycott eh? LOL I'm sure they're reeling over my lack of patronage.

Yup. $6!!!! And THAT is if you don't want any of the special mumbo jumbo they try to upsell you with. Like... cream and sugar.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

    LOVE IT!!!

I know what you mean! They are also now trying very hard to suggest something to eat with your coffee. By the time you finish paying, you could have used that money to buy a WHOLE dinner!

We have two of 'em and I have never given them a penny of mine. Woot! Talk about a righteous boycott eh? LOL I'm sure they're reeling over my lack of patronage.

    HA!...you GO, girl!!!!!

    Thanks for stopping by, Penny!

    ALWAYS so great seeing ya!

    Hope you had marvi day!

  44. Howdy Nitebyrd!

That coffee they have would strip the paint off a '57 Buick! I'm surprised you don't have hair on your tongue!!!

    bwhahahahahahahaha!

    OMG...that was RIOT!

It's definitely one of the strongest coffee's on the market. People seem to either love it or hate it.

I SO remember Barnes!!!! I use to LOVE that coffee. In fact, I use to cut the owners hair (Phil) while I was still a cosmetologist in Florida. I always enjoyed their Christmas blend during the holidays.

Yeah....Starbucks did do them in. How sad.

    Thanks for dropping by, Sis!

    Hope your enjoying the holidays!

I just got home from working ALL DAY and I'm exhausted. I can't believe I still have a week and half to go!

    OY!

  45. We have some Starbucks in Michigan but I couldn't even tell you where the nearest one is to me. There was a rumor going around that we were going to get one in our little city but it never panned out. We just have 1 nice family-owned coffee shop.
I love coffee-strong & evil just like you. My hubby doesn't drink it. Just means more for me! muahahahahaha

I just KNEW you and I had a lot in common!!!!!

I love Starbucks, but I also enjoy going into little privately owned coffee shops because they seem to have more of a cozy and unique feel to them.

ALWAYS so wonderful seeing ya, Collette!

    You're such a kindred soul!

Hope you're enjoying this holiday season, my friend!

    Thanks for stopping by!
