First, let me say this post was totally inspired by one of my blogging buddies, JD., who last week wrote a hysterical post about her love of Puerto Rican drag queens. If you’ve never visited JD’s blog, I Do Things So You Don’t Have To, I implore you to stop by sometime this weekend and treat yourself to her wonderful sense of humor. I guarantee you’ll love her as much as I do.

Now, getting back to drag queens….

Who here has never seen a drag show?

Who here thinks a drag show is a car race?

Oh, come on now….be honest.

A drag show (female impersonation) is when men dress up as women and traditionally lip-sync to diva vocal artists, such as, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, and Judy Garland, to name but a few. There are also some drag queens who have excellent voices, therefore sing as themselves, such as the ever-so-talented RuPaul.

Now, not all drag queens are pretty. Some are exquisite, while others resemble Clint Eastwood wearing lipstick, high heels, and his sister’s prom dress. However, even those drag queens are fun to watch because Clint Eastwood wearing a prom dress…well…is just amusing to watch.

I have also seen a few drag shows where women impersonate men and let me tell you, they’re fantastic too. However, I don’t know what you would call them. Perhaps, drag KINGS?

Not all female impersonators perform in gay nightclubs. In fact, while living in Florida, one of the most successful and packed night clubs was a straight club in Miami that I would sometimes go to see a very talented man impersonate Judy Garland. When you watched him it was as if you were seeing Judy Garland onstage - he was brilliant. The audience was a mixture of both straights and gays, but it was primarily straight couples on vacation, hooting and hollering, applauding wildly; thoroughly enjoying themselves.

I honestly think that EVERYONE can enjoy a professional drag show because it’s like watching a excellent magician.

It’s an illusion.

So, if you’ve never seen a drag queen, here are several photos I got off the Internet….

The infamous RuPaul

What has always amazed me about RuPaul, is that he’s equally attractive as both a man AND a woman.

Impersonation of Bette Midler

Impersonation of a YOUNG Joan Rivers.

Impersonation of Cher

Me. Impersonating Clint Eastwood, impersonating Dolly Parton.

(isn't my hair bitchin'?)

Have a DRAG of a weekend everyone!

X

  1. i am so impressed with drag queens. I love it on Project Runway when they make outfits for drag queens. I agree with you...there is so much talent involved...first with the hair, make-up, the humor and the ability to pull off impersonations! How come there are no drag kings? I think we need to start a new trend...drag kings..I like it! Thanks for a great post.

  2. I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE drag queens.. esp. the beautiful ones... I once knew someone who was the most beautiful transexual I've ever known... She was Latino- Alma - who used to come to the Brass Rail (in Hillcrest).. that's where I first met her - but she was a female impersonator at LIPPS in San Diego. You really couldn't tell AT ALL, that she was a man, but she went through some changes to be a woman- implants, hormones, etc.. So, I really looked at her as a woman, not a man. Oh well.. that's my encounter... I knew a few, but she was by far, the most real....
LOVE this post Ron... I am really in awe and amazement at how good some of these people look - in fact -- they look sooo good and sooo beautiful, that I am sometimes (secretly) jealous at how beautiful they are as women-- I always say... they look better than some "real" women do!!!
And, you look LOVELY as a Clint/Dolly impersonator...
    Happy weekend to ya!

  3. I took my wife and friends to a drag show (a million years ago) on Ventura Blvd. in Los Angeles. Place called the Queen Mary. NEVER have I been so entertained in my life! My friends still talk about it...not only the performers, but geez even THE AUDIENCE was worth the price of admission. Some things about LA I can never replace here in Texas. Thanks for the oh-so-gentle reminder of the finer things in this life, dear Vent. EFH

  4. Aw, thanks for the shout out, sweety-pie!

My mom and I saw a great drag show in Vegas a few years ago, but otherwise, I haven't seen one since college. Oh, those were fun days. I remember the queens called Diana Ross "Dianva" and Donna Summer "Donnva." It was like an extra-elegant way of saying their name.

RuPaul is so awesome, and she's been around a few years too.

But she can't hold a candle to your Clint Eastwood-Dolly Parton character.

    SEXY!

  5. Ron,
Some of the most talented people I have seen or talked to have been drag queens. I make a jaunt at least two or three times a year to Proviencetown, in Cape Cod and there is an abundance of these individuals there. I have gone to drag queen revues and once I went to a prom with some of my friends where all the roles were revesed. It was a hoot. The best hair cut I ever received was in a shop at P'town and the person cutting my hair was dressed as Marilyn Monroe. He was a great guy.
I have never put on a dress or tried to imitate a woman. Just can't do it. I did impersonate a marshmallow once I look so good and was so sweet I ate myself.
I do know of a couple of men who looked more like a female Lurch walking the streets in Ptown now that was not a pretty sight. A 6 ft 5 in 315lbs man with stubble trying pass off as Shirley Temple just did not do it for. Oh well back to the good shop Lollipop.

  6. Good Morning Susie!

"I love it on Project Runway when they make outfits for drag queens."

OMG...I'm addicted to Project Runway, I LOVE that show! And yes, I also love when they make outfits for drag queens! Oh, the DRAMA - HA!

There was a club I use to go to in Florida that had Drag King shows every once in awhile. They were incredible! But, you hardly see those shows much.

    Rock on, drag kings!

Thanks for stopping by, Susie! Always great to see ya, dear lady!

  7. Bonjour Leesa!

I remember the very first time I saw a drag show (I think it was when I moved to NYC). I sat there with my mouth wide open, AMAZED at how REAL he/she looked. There was also a gentleman in Florida, who went by the name "Dana Manchester." Never in my life, did I ever see a drag queen more REAL-LOOKING. He wore very little makeup, and his costumes were understated, so he was very natural-looking. He was truly a class act!

"that I am sometimes (secretly) jealous at how beautiful they are as women-- I always say... they look better than some "real" women do!!!'

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....I've heard other women say the same thing.

Me, however, look like Clint Eastwood!

    Bwhahahahahahahhahahaha!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Leesa! Have a SUPER weekend, my friend!

Yes! Yes! I know what you mean. Watching the audience is a show unto itself!

I imagine LA is a lot like NYC. One BIG drag show!

I've never been to P Town, but a guy I work with is originally from Boston and he said it's faaaabulous. Escpecially during the summer months.

"The best hair cut I ever received was in a shop at P'town and the person cutting my hair was dressed as Marilyn Monroe."

OMG, how hilarious! I should have tried that while I was still cutting hair. No, on second thought...I think I would have scared my clients - HA!

"I do know of a couple of men who looked more like a female Lurch walking the streets in Ptown now that was not a pretty sight. A 6 ft 5 in 315lbs man with stubble trying pass off as Shirley Temple just did not do it for."

Isn't RuPaul the BOMB? It still blows me away at how faaaabulous he looks as both a man and a woman. I've got a couple of his CD'S. He's got a great singing voice!

Oh, thank you.....that's the first time anyone ever called me SEXY!

  13. karaoke night (Sunday) at JR's in Houston is THE most entertaining. Some drag queens, some men in street clothes, but all can at least carry a tune and some performances are, well, provocative in a good-funny way. Haven't been in a while and I'd say it's high time!!

Ron, hope you have a great weekend too!

I think drag queens are fabulous, Darling! I've watched RuPaul's Drag Race many times. It is magic to watch how they can transform themselves with such ease (although it's much more difficult than they make it seem) into character (esp. love Bette Midler's). And you're so right, RuPaul is gorgeous as both a man and a woman.

You never cease to entertain and amaze, Ron!

Hope your weekend is a drag! :))

He's a VERY tall man, too, which adds to his stunning stature as a woman.

He was the first spokesmodel for the Mac lipstick Viva Glam.

there used to be a club in the village, near St. Vincents Hospital called Lips
    best show
    packed every night
actually they did a show upstairs at the bar level where they basically would hang out with the customers
and then a full floor show downstairs

  31. Well, shoot-- The Moof monster ate the post I left yesterday. RAWR. (k....that one was probably all ME--sometimes I hit 'post' and in my 'undercaffinated' state, just move to my next cup and next 'cozy spot'...)

Personally, I think they're all gorgeous and all very courageous.
I don't think I could find it in me to put that much work into transforming myself into some 'established' person. It's painful enough to transform into ME some days. LOL That's not about make-up or dress--that's just about caffeine and getting centered in what's true about MEL.

Anyway--when himself's daughter visited us, the girl decided to treat her to a night in the city in the grand U.S of A. .....I was nervous about it cuz it was the 'my kid and your kid' deal. Yaknow--'and then they'll go home to England and talk about dad's life in America' to the rest of the lot......geeze I wanted it to go well and for her to get a good impression. (SILLY ME!!)

I worked on keeping the smile pasted on my face the next day when I got to hear allllllllllll about the drag queen show they'd gone to, all the while hoping himself wasn't going to choke on his coffee and keel over on me.

    He didn't.

Darn kiddo STILL talks about the Drag Queen night out as one of her more memorable moments in good ol' Iowa. LOL
Of course the girl couldn't take her to a county fair.....LOL OMG!!

  32. Ok, I'll try to leave it again. Basically I said that first I LOVED your Clint Eastwood impersonating Dolly outfit. What a hoot!

Second, I was saying that when I was 21 I went ot visit my brother in New Orleans and I was still VERY naive (remember I'm from Walton's Mountain so I didn't get out a LOT) and my brother took me to a "club" on Bourbon Street. Remember this is in the early days of karaoke and I'd never heard of such a thing. There were all these really talented and beautiful young "ladies" singing and I was SO impressed with how much they actually sounded JUST like the original artists and LOOKED so much like them! LOL that is, until the end of the show, when the main "lady" came out to do a Q&A with the audience. Imagine my surprise when that DEEP voice came out of that beautiful young "lady". My brother was rolling on the floor laughing at my gaping mouth. At least while he was on the floor he was able to pick up my lower jaw!
    Have a FABU weekend!

  42. Bwa-HAHAHAHA!!!! Oh my Lord, that hair!

When we were in Lake Tahoe a couple of weeks ago (you know, that little Cal-Neva town where you rented out Phyllis Diller's house?) we were told to check out this drag queen show and there was something about how they hate to be called drag queens but preferred to be called "female impersonators" - why is that? Anyway, I was with my Dad who for one is of the generation that might be uncomfortable with that sort of thing, and for two, he's so unhealthy we had to cut our trip short because he was so damn short of breath just walking from his bed to the kitchen, but I was told it was a great show and now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I've ever even been to a show. Dang. I'm totally missing out.

And I love RuPaul and have watched his TV show several times, but now I can't ever remember what day anything comes on anymore and miss everything, unless it's on hulu or something.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Howdy Margaret!

    Bwhahahahahahahahahahaha!

OMG, I could have just seen you and your father watching that drag show in Tahoe! I bet your father would have enjoyed it. And I just know YOU would have, without a doubt!

Actually, there is a slight performing difference between a drag queen and a female impersonator. A drag queen is someone who simply dressing as a woman. A female impersonator is a drag queen who impersonates a celebrity.

But, to me, they're all DRAG QUEENS - HA!

Never saw RuPaul's show, but JD says it's the BOMB! I really don't watch TV, myself, other than renting DVD's.

Thanks for stopping by, dear lady!
