Even if the most renown psychic predicted that one day I would be moving back to the northeast, I think I’d have to tell them they must be using a broken deck of Tarot Cards.

I was originally born here in Pennsylvania, then moved to Florida for 20 years, then moved back to the northeast 9 years ago.

When my family moved to Florida in 1973, I was ecstatic. I had always dreamed of living some place tropical, where the sun shined almost 24/7 and the cold harsh winters were void.

I became what you could call, a sun bunny.

I would sit on the beach for 5-6 hours, while lying on a silver mat that reflected the suns’ rays in order to keep my perpetual Malibu Ken tan.

(I currently have a Casper the Ghost tan)

I can honestly say that when my family moved to Florida, I had no intention of ever moving back to the northeast because I had found my nirvana.

Yet, it’s funny how things we feel passionate about will sometimes change. And then change again.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Florida. In fact, I remember it as being one of the most wonderful times in my life. Somehow moving to Florida brought me out of my childhood shell, where my personality came out of hiding and my creativity came into fruition. It was as if all that glorious sunshine caused me to internally blossom.

Florida was a very positive move for me, and I’m so grateful for it.

However, about 5 years before I left, I began to feel restless, tired, and stifled. I also became incredibly intolerant of the heat. My body seemed to go through a complete turnaround, where the constant sunshine and heat was physically painful.

Whenever I looked at photographs and movies that were shot or filmed anywhere in the northeast, I felt a deep sense of melancholy.

Of belonging.

So, in 2001 I moved back, and I‘m so glad I did. I’m crazy about the state of Pennsylvania, and the northeast in general.

I love it’s diverse terrain. It’s seasonal changes. It’s richness in history. The rawness of it’s cities.

Perhaps it’s simply because I was born in this part of the United States that I feel this way. Or perhaps it now reflects where I’m at internally.

I once read a book written by an astrologer, who claimed that every place in the world resonates with a particular kind of energy, and that we will sometimes feel a strong internal pull to that area, because the energy of that place resonates with our own personal energy.

And I believe that to be true.

I also believe that as we grow and change throughout our lives, different places will feed and nurture us with what we need at that time.

And for me, right now….it’s here.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend everyone!

  1. Perhaps the change in you was actually "The Change" you know Men-O-Pause.

OK seriously, I know what you mean about a longing to live in a certain geographic area. Lisa and I both have a need to be close to the Pacific Ocean. Getting out there and wiggling our toes in the sand has a way of renewing us.

  2. As your neighbor to the south, I know exactly what you mean. I never thought I'd come back to live in Baltimore, and yet, here I am. There's no place like the Mid-Atlantic! I just love the way you write.

  3. I loved reading through this post. I truly see what you write about being crazy about Florida and then later suffering from that excess heat. Times and places do have their era.

For me, it was great being back in Fort Myers. It also feels like my place is here in Paris now. This city just resonates something that deeply keeps pleasing me. I feel good here. Serene. Inspired. Fully alive. And you know... I was born in Finland!

Have a great weekend my dear Internet pal!

of course driving through PA in the fall is beautiful.

  5. I'm from the West, as in Vegas, baby. I moved from there 13 years ago, loved, loved, loved Va. Now I'm in the south, and the charm has warn off. I understand the pull of your roots, Vegas will always be home to me.

  6. I've never lived anywhere but here in the NE although I did spend lots of time in the NW and in London and I entertained the notion of moving to both places

Florida would never do for me
Sun and heat have never been something I could deal with
Even as a toddler I'd insist on shade and ventilated diapers

I have been a schvitzer since the day I was born
Half the time when they thought I was crying I was sweating

    beautiful photos

  7. Hey we MUST be twins. If you're rockin' that Casper tan and I'm reflecting light! BOOYAH! LOL I do understand completely how you feel. And just like some places give me bad vibes. I felt those bad, I don't belong here vibes when we lived in Memphis. And when I go back to VA to visit, my body always feels a calm and occasionally my body cries out to me to go back. I love living in GA but in my soul I will always be a Walton's Mountain girl.

Great post my dear friend. Have a Fabulously Casper weekend! ;-)

  8. I'm glad you've found your "home."

I like where I live (Chicago suburbs) for many reasons, but I also feel like I'm ready for a change. But that probably won't happen unless my husband changes jobs.

I love Florida (and anyplace warm) when we visit during the winter. But I'm growing less and less tolerant of heat and summer and sun. It's supposed to be 90 degrees today, and I know very soon I will be shutting the blinds and cranking the A/C.

And counting the days till fall!

  9. You know where you belong. I would love to live somewhere where the sun shines every day, that has minimal rain and no snow. :(

"Perhaps the change in you was actually "The Change" you know Men-O-Pause."

hahahahahhahahaha.....yes, absolutely! I think that definitely had something to do with my "change" because come to think of it, I was 45 years old when I moved back.

    Those MEN-O-PAUSAL years - HA!

I can so see what you mean about the Pacific Ocean. Whenever I see photos of the Pacific Coast Highway shoreline it looks INCREDIBLE!!!

OMG...about 11 years ago, while still living in Florida, I went to Baltimore for a makeup seminar and was so totally impressed with it. It's truly an awesome city! Great food too!

    I agree...I love the mid-atlantic.

As a child, I never really appreciated it, however now as an adult....I see it's diverse beauty.

As always, thank you for stopping by this morning, CherylT.

    Have a SUPER weekend....X

  12. Bonjour Susu!

Seeing all your wonderful photos of Fort Myers brought back a ton of great Florida memories for me. Isn't it something how when we return to a place we use to live and enjoy, we instantly get a feeling of "connection"? And even though we have moved on, it still touches that part of us that WAS.

No, I had no idea you were born in Finland, however when I look you in the photos of Paris...I can so see how that city resonates with you!! You simply GLOW!

I've only been to a few places in Europe, but I LOVED it there. It's got such a wonderful combination of ancient history mixed with modern consciousness.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, Susu! Always a delight!

    Have a great weekend....X

  13. Good Morning Val!

I know, girl...you LOVE the heat and worship the sun. You would adore Florida!

I've visited Nevada, so I do know what you mean about the blazin' heat - OY However, I found it much more comfortable than the heat on this side of the states. The humidty here kills me.

ahhhh....and yes, NY! Ain't that city the BOMB?

I never appreciated the beauty of PA until I moved back 9 years ago. It's breathtaking, isn't it?

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor!

OMG...you're the first person I've met who was actually born and raised in Vegas!!! As you know, I lived there for a summer and adored it! I actually found the heat much more bareable than the heat in the northeast. It get so damn humid here.

Never been to VA, but the photos I've seen of it are BEAUTIFUL! And it's actually not that far from PA.

Thanks for stopping by, FG! I alway get so excited when I see you've commented or posted.

Oooooo....I could SO see you living in London!!! Me too. All that wonderful gray, drizzly, COLD weather. I know people think I'm insane when I say this, but I love that kind of weather. Plus, I love the history of Europe.

I thought of YOU when I posted these photos. The first one is of Mantaulk Point (my favorite place on the Island). And of course, the second one is of you know what....NYC! The third is of the Pocono Mountains.

Thanks for stopping by, dear lady!

Yes, I so hear ya! I too will sometimes get bad vibes about certain places I've visited. I felt that way about Korea. I was only there for an hour and a half (layover), but it was LONG enough to tell me that I would not like living there.

" my soul I will always be a Walton's Mountain girl."

Me too. And that's what I love about living here in the northeast. If I want to go to the mountains to get out of the city, they're only a few hours away.

Have a faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabulous weekend, my Casper friend!

  17. Good Morning JD!

Hey listen, every single person I've ever talked to who has visited Chicago has had nothing but FABULOUS stuff to say about it. I have a feeling I would really like it. I've seen pictures of it and it's one of the most beautifully layed out cities I've ever seen. A guy who lives in my apartment building is originally from Chicago and he's a super nice guy.

"I love Florida (and anyplace warm) when we visit during the winter. But I'm growing less and less tolerant of heat and summer and sun."

Yes, the best time to visit Florida is in Oct-Jan. The weather is perfecto!

OMG, I know, girl...we're suppose to get 90 something degree heat this weekend too - OY VEY!

Always so wonderful seeing you, JD!

  19. I find that very interesting what you said about being pulled by the energy of a place. I have a friend who had through the years been "called" to LA to find within a few months that she is "called" back home to Va. She just went to LA in Dec and should be back here in Va in a couple of more weeks. Feeling at home where you are is really the best feeling in the world. Happy weekend to you, Ron.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Good Afternoon Suziecate!

When I was a kid, I always had this unbelievable feeling about living in the tropics. I would even have dreams about living there. Whenever I would see a picture of palm trees or tropical beached, it felt like home. So, when I started to get the "calling" to move back to the northeast I was pretty shocked. However, I just knew it was time for a change in location.

I think different places call to us at various times of growth in our lives - whether it be for 20 years, or even a few months. You're friend probably got what she needed and now it's time to return to VA.

    You're soooooooo right, dear lady...

"Feeling at home where you are right now is really the best feeling in the world."

As always, I thank you for dropping by!

    Happy weekend to ya, SC.....X

  21. Having never lived anywhere else I can't say whether I would like it or not, but I do know that in astrology there's something called 'astrocartography' that has to do with setting up a map that shows where the planets are with regard to locations. And whatever planet runs thru a specific area is where you will experience things that planet represents.
How interesting the JFK's Pluto (death and regeneration) line ran thru Dallas, Tx.
I don't know alot about it but do know of an astrologer or two who are very good at it.
So... if I had to move and had a couple locations available I'd have the chart done to see which place would be better and for what.

Glad you are back home and living in a place that makes you happy!

    Have a great weekend! xo

  22. You have to live where you are comfortable and it appears you are there, we are always drawn back to our birthplace I believe, some of us make it back while others never do.

I was raised in the mountains so I don't think city life would work for me and even though I am on a different coast I have mountains all around that comfort me somewhat.

The years and years of a Malibu Ken tan may have finally gotten to you Ron because if you force this onto a person suited for the Casper Ghost tan just may force more out of you than a good personality.

Nirvana is where you are happy and even though Florida was that for a while it is actually where you are happy at now and that place for anyone is Home.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ron your photos are so beautiful I can see where you like living in PA. As you know I really love the of coats, scarves and winter clothes...so where you live would suit me that way. Living in LA we do have pretty amazing weather year round but there are no changes of seasons which is something to miss. I am pretty boring having lived in very few places my whole. I have lived in Cleveland, Massachusetts, San Francisco and LA only. I love SF it is kind of the perfect blend of Florida and PA without the snow. Have you ever been there? But you are right, we change and our needs, our bodies, our social circles and our jobs are ever evolving. I am so glad you are happy to be where you are. That is the best feeling in the entire world. I feel that way about my house..and my bed. My two most favorite places to live.

Have a great weekend!!! It will be very HOT where I am!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Good Evening Crystal Chick!

I KNEW you'd pass along some GREAT information about 'astrocartography'!!! I can't remember exactly what the name of the astrology book was, but it shared the info that you spoke of. It also spoke about certain areas having more or less masculine and feminine energy. It was a fascinating book!

OMG, I had no idea about this....

"How interesting the JFK's Pluto (death and regeneration) line ran thru Dallas, Tx."

    Ooooo...that gave me chillls!

I am so glad I moved back to the northeast, M. The whole northeast coast ( PA, NJ, MASS, NY, DC) to me, is so beautiful and suits me well right now.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by and sharing on this post, neighbor! Enjoyed it!

Don't you just love the mountains? I know I've shared this with you before, but for as much as I am a city boy, I DO love the mountains with just as much passion. That's what I really enjoy about living here - I have both.

I've seen many photos of California, and the terraine is absolutely breathtaking! I would love to visit the Napa Valley one of these days!

"As you know I really love the of coats, scarves and winter clothes..."

Oh, meeeeeeee too!!!! I'm always so excited when I get to bring out my Fall clothes after the Summer is over. My favorite month is October because you can smell the crisp, clean, chilly air!

I haven't really lived that many places myself, but I've visited a lot.

"Cleveland, Massachusetts, San Francisco and LA "

WOW...that's such a wonderful diversity of places!!! No, I have never even visited San Fran, but everyone who has lived or visited tells me I would love the place. Mainly, because of the weather. No heat!

Isn't Mass. gorgeous??? Love the history and old buildings. The movie "Little Women" always gives me that "warm-fuzzy" feeling that Mass. has.

"I feel that way about my house..and my bed. My two most favorite places to live."

    HAHAHAHAHAHA...you GO, Susie!!!

  27. It looks like the best of all worlds Ron. Why would anyone NOT want to live there? I wish I had mountains or an ocean handy, but I can drive to 3 of the great lakes within less than an hour. It makes for humidity that just kills in summer, but you survive. I like your thoughts on feeling that I place is right, calls to you or sends you a big NO-GO! Everything has its energy, doesn't it. Lovely post.

  28. Good Evening Katherine!

That's what I really love about living here - having the best of all worlds. City life and country life. Like you, I'm about 2 hours away from the mountains and about 1 1/2 hour from the ocean. There's a part of me that's very countrified. I'm a big tree lover, so it's nice to get out into the country and walk amongst them.

It can be terribly humid here in the summer too. However, summer is only about 3 months long and then it's over. YIPEEE!

Yes, dear lady...everything has it's energy, your absolutely right.

  30. Bonjour Ronnie,
How are you doing,my dear friend? I'am in there rolling with the punches; a real Rocky :)

Once again, another very touching post. Bravo.

You are so right about the power of places.Even when we dream about places, they are attracting us. But,when we finally step foot in them, we can be drawn to some places or repulsed by others. The energy can work either way!

I think that with you, your roots were more strongly planted in PA then those suntan and fun years in FL would have ever dared to show.
And yes, we all change!Even if FL was one of the best times.

As we talked about Philly once on e mail( with varying opinions),but I have a special feeling towards Philly. The bottom line being one of "roots". A part of has been and always will be there.

I hope that you will in the future see more beautiful spots in PA. Have you been to Lancaster Co by any chance? Not that I want to bug the Amish :)But it sounds pretty.

I truly have such fond and wonderful memories of Florida and am SOOOO grateful for my time there. However, the northeast (right this moment) is where my heart is. And yes, I do think it has A LOT to do with being my roots.

Yes, my friend, I have been to Lancaster County and loved it! Down at Reading Terminal the Amish have their own stands where they sell their handmade baked goods, candies, crafts, etc. and it's wonderful. They are the most simple and sweetest people.

I love this part of the country- so much history, and so much beauty! and of course in NYC we have history, culture, changing seasons... There's no place like home, there's no place like home!

  36. Well said! I personally wouldn't be able to survive in the city. Too many people clustered together in a finite space. I used to think that I'd like to live in the desert, but my many trips to Vegas and it's oppressive summer heat quickly wised me up to that reality. I'm a wuss in cold weather, so anywhere with four true seasons would eat me up and spit me out. I guess being a Californian has both spoiled me and made me soft. Ah well....

I guess you have more true grit than I...

  38. Helloooooo Herman!

"I personally wouldn't be able to survive in the city. Too many people clustered together in a finite space."

Hey listen, I sometimes feel that way myself. That's why I'm glad I'm close enough to the countryside, to take a break from city life every once in a while. I'm so lazy when it comes to owning and taking care of a car, so that's one of the main reasons why I love the city - walking and public transportation.

I have also lived in Vegas (for a summer) and have to agree with you...the heat is horrendous.

I think it's GREAT that you enjoy living in California! I've heard from several people that it has the most perfect/even weather. And the photos I've seen of it are SPECTACULAR!

As I've gotten older, I've turned into a penguin. I didn't use to like cold weather at all, however now I love it. The cold actually makes me feel better, physically and emotionally.

  45. I must agree. I'm from the midwest, and no matter where else i go (although there are many places more beautiful) i am drawn back here like a rubber band.

its down to earth, homey, and the people aren't pretentious. love it.

"i am drawn back here like a rubber band."

    I LOVE that!

I've never been to the midwest, however Chicago is a city I want to get to eventually. Everything I've ever hear about it is PRIMO. Yes, I also hear the people in the midwest are friendly and down to earth.

So glad to hear you enjoy where you live. That's so important.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by!

    Have a super weekend!

    X
