I think if I had to pay for every time I used a comma, my Visa card would already be maxed.

I love using comma’s, however I truthfully have no idea where they go or where to place them. I usually just insert them wherever I take a breath in my thinking, or whenever I want to make a sentence look more esthetically attractive.

(I’m a Libra, what can I tell you?)

I mean does a comma always go after the word but or so?

But, I like it that way.

So, tell me the truth.

And does a comma always proceed the word because?

I walked across the street, because I needed to get to the other side.

Another place I’m confused about comma usage is in this sentence.

Yesterday, I came home from work to find that the comma key on my computer was missing. I freaked!

Should a comma go after the word yesterday?

And do I really need to use a common in this sentence?

Happy Birthday, my friend.

Lately, I’ve been trying to notice how other writers use comma’s in their blog posts, but I still can’t find an answer because everyone seems to use comma’s differently.

I also read something online that said you can never really use too many comma’s. So, if in doubt….use them.

But, I serious sense that one day I may use up all the comma's in the world, and will have to resort to this….

Hi (comma) my name is Ron Carnavil (comma) and I’m seriously thinking about taking an English course (comma) because I have no comma sense. So (comma) can someone recommend a school (comma) or I fear there will soon be a comma shortage.

So, if you could share any tips about comma usage in your comments, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you everyone!

P.S. Oh….and by the way, right after I wrote this post, I found an interesting picture on the internet depicting the various positions that comma’s do the nasty.

Horny little buggers, aren’t they?

It’s no wonder I love using comma’s.

something about a comma. i just throw those suckers in there. maybe that's why i post pictures now instead of writing.

okay i'm so not focused now. this comma makes no sense.

  4. OH the Comma Sutra is a RIOT! LOL
Well, I am certainly not the one to ask about punctuation or grammar. OMG, I use OMG's, LOL's, Bwahahaha's, commas, brackets for hugs, ellipsis.... you know... and asterisks when I want to *emphasize* something. And what is a sentence without a winky. ;) I mean, please...

I wrote better years ago, before emails and the internet. Another blog friend who still likes to handwrite notes and be pen pals with people has a pet peeve about poor grammar and punctuation. Whenever I send her an email I check it about three times! Goddess forbid I use 'their' intead of 'there' or make another blunder like that. And fugetabout using acronyms or slangs like ROFLMAO. Although, she does allow an occasional haha.

As for commas, I don't know. I use them, like you, when I think there should be a break.

I'm sooooo long-winded I have to put them in or you'de pass out trying to read one of my sentences in it's entirity because they have the potential to get really long much longer than they should be that I need to pause now and then and take a little breath and think about what I want to say so that you will understand it like I want it to be understood and that's a good thing isn't it because after all I am the writer of my sentences and you are the reader and without commas it would get terribly confusing and then you wouldn't want for me to leave you comments anymore because you would be reading forever and forever and forever without a break and what good is that really when really all you want to do is try and understand what the heck is being said but you can't do that without some pauses and breaks in between you know I am right right???

    I think I just gave myself a headache. ;)

Have a wonderful week Ron! xo

  7. Copy editor to the rescue!

First, don't worry. Commas regenerate (see Comma Sutra illustration). You will not use them all up.

In your first example, no comma is needed before "because," BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN a comma is never needed before "because."

It all depends on the information following "because."

    Examples:

He didn’t run, because he was afraid.

He didn’t run because he was afraid.

In the first sentence, “because he was afraid” isn’t necessary; the main thing is that he didn’t run, and the reason is incidental. The second sentence, which omits the comma, is unclear. It might mean that he ran, but not because he was afraid. To prevent confusion, sometimes you need the comma. (from the Chicago Manual of Style.)

Second example: You usually don't need a comma after a one-word clause like "Yesterday."

Third example: Yes, you need a comma after "Happy Birthday," or any interjection like "Well" or "Oh."

Your rule of inserting a comma when you would take a breath if speaking is a sound one. The English language is tedious and full of contradictions. Therefore, ignore this entire comment and just go have fun with commas!

  8. Commas used to be my friends. In grammar school I learned all the rules and memorized them. They were important to me. like prepositions, Use them correctly or lose those points.
Nowadays, (is that comma correctly placed???) I don't see that many commas floating around. Though I do see commas before the word "and". I remember that just the connective "and" was enough. So, Ron, :) even while I watch for comma placement in other, more literate posts, I gave up. Rules, Shmools - coma, shoma. I just spew it out and if I think it needs a comma, I comma. Though it would be nice to get a corrected post back giving me an idea of just how literate i really am. Maybe our writing style reflects how we live our lives. Clean, neat and precise, maybe even pristine, coloring inside the lines and following the rules. You know, constipating. Or, like me, however hard I tried I never got that damn crayon to keep inside the line. I was a bad girl and by comma expert standards probably still am.
p.s. capitalizing is not my favorite sport. lower case is just so much easier. but then i get worried people will be insulted if when their name has no capital first letter. do you think e.e. cummings cared about this conundrum?

  12. Trying hard to avoid laughing here, especially over that last pic, but my writing advisor told me that you should use as few commas as possible. 'They're not a pepper pot to be shaken all over the manuscript,' she said. However, (used there to exaggerate pause)I tend to bung them in for special effect. OK, I know, it's incorrect but who cares. Note, no comma before the word 'but' since there's no break required in that short sentence. I think poetic licence can be claimed if we get it wrong..... grins.

  23. comma sense - comma sutra??!! so punny!
If I really tug on my obscure, faded memories from 12th grade English, I seem to recall my teacher telling us to only use commas in composing compound sentences (two complete thoughts with a subject and predicate) or to separate items in a list. Otherwise, she would cross them out of our papers.

But really, who knows? it is a mystery.

  25. The French are very generous with commas. I state this before anything else since I'm afraid that eight years spent in this gorgeous land of chic might have influenced me. On the contrary, the French don't like hyphens - I am a big aficionado of the lil' line - they use ;s.

Commas can be us to phrase or sequence sentences so using them after time definers like 'yesterday' is ok, but in my opinion makes the text fast quite heavy if over employed. 'Because' usually takes a comma pal along, since it is a clause. Happy b-day 'comma' my friend is also about sequencing. Use it or not - just like perfume.

Luckily language gives us choices - just like fashion. See, here I go again with my beloved hyphens... oh la la!

I use commas the way I hear the sentence in my head - if I pause, I put in a comma

unless I'm really congested that day
then I usually take out some commas when proofing

who was it that said - right before you leave the house for the day take off one accessory
    same premise I guess

I am originally from Chicago, but when I moved away to Minnesota in 1974 I had to learn how to speak Minnesotan. Here is how they do it "Up Nort"
You start every sentence with the word So, and end every one with the word, Then. If you live North of the border in Canada, just add the word Eh, as a question at the end.

    Minnesotan:
So, you use a lot of commas then?

    Canadian:
So, you use a lot of commas then, eh?

See, it's easy, and it's fun, too.

A comma is indicative of a pause, but I too tend to overuse them when I'm not paying attention. What I typically do is write what I'm going to say, step away for a few minutes, then come back and see if my pauses make sense. Often times my writing will sound like a William Shatner bit with, too many, commas, in, it (there's....something, on, the, wing!).

I put commas all over the place, like you, when I take a breath (which in reality since I NEVER shut up and take a breath there should be no commas ever in my life anywhere on anyday but I use them anyway so that even if I didn't want to take a break my reader might want to take a break because they don't talk as much as me or have as much to say about things and life and stuff (period)

Which brings me to (periods) When can we abolish ALL periods (girls-you know what I am saying)...hahahahahaha......

When I first started writing my blog I was all worried about proper English and the impressions I was making but then I got over it. This is my blog, a story about my life and thoughts and it is what it is. Just like what you get in real life with me. I am who I am. Real as it gets, no fake NOTHING here. And if you want realism, stick with me. If you want perfection, well you better start searching elsewhere (and good luck finding that one)!

Great post (breath) as usual RON!

  47. I probably use them more than necessary, but what the hell.

The punctuation mark that always throws me for a loop is the dreaded semi-colon. Nasty little boogers.

In parting, I sing, "Comma, Romma, Domma, Lamma, Ding-Dong!"

  51. Afternoon!

As an author who must answer to an editor, I couldn't help noticing that in most of the reponses here, people refer to commas as comma's. Unless the comma possesses something, it doesn't need the apostrophe folks! ;)

Of course, we *could* say: "We are debating the comma's use," and be technically correct because it is modifying a noun.

    Interesting reading, thanks.

    J.
