In the three years of having this blog, one of the main things it has revealed to me is the humor in both my life and my humanness.

Often, when sharing a post about a particular experience that may have been frustrating, annoying or madding, by writing it out, has enabled me to not only look back and discover the humor in the experience, but more so the humor in myself for taking myself so seriously in the first place.

Often too, when sharing an experience about something that may have been sad, painful or difficult, it has enabled me to look back and discover the lessons learned.

Have you ever noticed how when something happens to you that may be an uncomfortable situation, you’ll suddenly start laughing; finding it totally inappropriate because you think it’s wrong to laugh?

Or, have you ever noticed how when sometimes during a heated argument with someone, the two of you will suddenly start laughing?

I believe it's because laughter is medicine, which comes to our aid when we need to lighten up; finding the humor. Because humor is healing.

Now, I’m not saying we should never acknowledge our angers, frustrations and annoyances. Nor, our sadness, pains and fears, because I truly think it is healthy to accept, embrace and express how we feel.

However, when these emotions peak to a crescendo, there comes a time when humor is needed.

I’ve always discovered that humor gives way to any challenging situation, by removing me from the challenge; giving clarity to the bigger picture.

Whenever I feel overly angry, sad, or fearful, I will often watch reruns of one of my all-time favorite TV shows, I Love Lucy. And before I know it, I’m laughing; feeling so much better, and so much lighter.

Yes, life is not always easy. In fact, sometimes life can be downright tough. A bitch at times.

And trust me, I’ve been through it. Like I know many of you have.

But whenever life gets this way, I know it’s time to laugh.

I would like to share a short animated video that was created by the amazing Israeli artist, Eran Hilleli, which I discovered last week on one of my longtime favorite blogs, Dooce.

Which by the way, made me LAUGH MY ASS OFF.

(especially after watching it three times in a row)

So, enjoy these three and half seconds about life's ironies. And its humor….

  1. Heh...I guess the lesson here is not to be reincarnate as a bird.

It's funny how, as a species, we're able to cope with tragedy through humor. From world-wide catastrophes to one-on-one relationship issues, looking back to those times with a smile on our lips allows us to cope with painful issues of our past. Totally agree!

Oh, and for the record, when I'm feeling down I like to throw in a DVD of the british comedy The Young Ones. It's never failed! :-)

  3. Loved the video, Ron, especially the bit on the tennis court, it was so funny I watched three times. I remember once, right in the middle of a huge argument with himself, seeing the funny side of the whole thing. I tried very hard not to laugh but in the end I couldn't control myself. It was the best moment of my life.... well almost. Laughter is definitely the finest medicine and you're right about it making us feel lighter; misery is sooo heavy... I can do without heavy anytime.

  4. That poor birdy! Sometimes you're the dog and sometimes you're the hydrant. I hate being the one pissed on but it's part of being human in this crazy world. Thanks so much for sharing that.

Was going to comment on your last post but then I was at a loss for words until now. Size matters. Okay, I've said it and I'm not proud.

I so agree with you Ron, laughter is very important for relieving many situations. :)

  18. I think you need a special kind of funny bone to get a big jolt of laughter out of that clip. But i do admit that it is cleverly assembled!

Last weekend I said something to Cristy that she didn't much like. So she said it back to me about 2 minutes later and I laughed until my face hurt. It was the most ridiculous thing to say!

Sometimes I can just be a moron. But at least I can laugh about it.
    :)

Thank you for popping over to my place as often as you do, you are so kind. btw, Cristy says Hi.

  19. Yes there it is again Ron...our likenesses. I also find such lightness and and humor in Lucy. I think because there is something to real about her and her foibles. I love to laugh as well and when it has been difficult to find things to laugh about...well then I know I have hit rock bottom. It has been documented by various doctors that laughter is not only the best medicine but is actually medicine at all. It works and even if after the laughter stops the problems remain...well there is always something else to laugh about! Thanks for being my resource for many laughs this year...one which has been quite a difficult one for me!

  21. Hi Diane~

"I think you need a special kind of funny bone to get a big jolt of laughter out of that clip."

Yes, I agree. Probably a devilishly sarcastic kind of funny bone like mine!!!

I can't help it, but I found it hysterically hysterical, what can I say?

"Last weekend I said something to Cristy that she didn't much like. So she said it back to me about 2 minutes later and I laughed until my face hurt."

See! Isn't it something how sometimes in an argumentive moment, you can just laugh? It's happened to me many times.

"Sometimes I can just be a moron. But at least I can laugh about it."

Me too. But, at least we can laugh about it, right?

OMG, I am sooooooooo LOVING your new blog! You've no idea how much I look forward to stopping by each day and seeing what creative treasure you share with us. I am so glad you started that blog!!!

  22. Hey Susie~

"I also find such lightness and and humor in Lucy. I think because there is something to real about her and her foibles."

See! ANOTHER thing we have in common!

And yes, I so agree with you that there is something REAL about her and her foibles. And even though her foibles are often times far-fetched, I still find myself believing her, because she believes it herself. Lucille Ball was such an amazing character actress because she knew how to make her comedy REAL.

"It has been documented by various doctors that laughter is not only the best medicine but is actually medicine at all."

Do you remember that true-life movie with Robin Williams called, Patch Adams? He was a doctor who believed in the healing power of laughter. GREAT film!

Eran Illeli's ironies of life is brilliant! Makes me think of how I walked into glass doors the other day--even while wearing my glasses! o_O Thank you for sharing his amazing talent!

Hope you're having a carefree day, Ron! :))

  26. Laughter is the a very good healing modality. When someone comes in to see me I always try to find a way where at some time during the session we can get a good laugh in. It makes the soul a little less heavy and the energy of love and light seep into the person's being. They are more relaxed and more conducive to the energy of the universe that will enable the body mind and spirit to get aligned and enter into a state of healing.
It is like peeing your dark pants no one can see the wet spot but it feel so good.

I hope the little chuckle helped.

Me too, me too! OMG, I totally forgot how faaabulous Laurel and Hardy are. And isn't it amazing how their sense humor, even to this day, is UNIVERSAL?

Isn't Eran's Hilleli ironies of life BRILLIANT? If you click over to his Vimeo channel, you will find several more of his works. Some are humorous, others are very thought-provoking and reflective. His animation is so original!

"Makes me think of how I walked into glass doors the other day--even while wearing my glasses!"

And I soooooooooo agree, Dave...."They are more relaxed and more conducive to the energy of the universe that will enable the body mind and spirit to get aligned and enter into a state of healing."

And I have also found that sometimes during a Reiki session, a client will suddenly burst out into laughter.

"It makes the soul a little less heavy and the energy of love and light seep into the person's being."

  29. Dooce usually will make me laugh. She has a very funny and unique way of writing. That video was great. Poor bird! LOL

Trying to see the humor in life, especially when it sucks, is a talent and gift. It is also definitely a way of coping. I do it because the alternative just isn't an option.

You also bring laughter into my life, Ron. Thanks!

  31. *chuckling* Boy--some days I AM that birdie...over and over and over again.

Gotta laugh at me, yaknow? Was a time I took life way too seriously....everything was a big deal and I helped the drama along. It was all about 'life sticking it to me' and me being sure to stick it to life first. (you know ME!!)

I laugh today. And there are more times than not I refer back to what is lovingly known as 'rule 62'--'don't take yourself (or life) so damn serious'.
I even have a pin I don when I know I'm starting to do it so I get out of that mode.
And I'm seemingly IN it right now.
It all feels so darn serious...but I'll try to remember to laugh along the way as I can.
Like I said--sometimes I AM that bird...over and over and over again.

  37. I was going to put another birdie comment but I see it's been well covered.

I think some kind laughter results in our coming to senses when realizing the futility of what we have been doing or arguing about and at the same time knowing that things will continue being alright - as they always were.

My favourite style of comedy is improv. So when ever I feel depressed, I watch "Whose Line" on youtube and any clips of the "Comedy store Players" I can find such as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Oft8-C655w

....knowing that things will continue being alright.

OMG...I too enjoy improv comedy and so admire those actors who are good at it. It takes a very special talent to know how to act spontaniously.

I feel sorry for people who don't have much of a sense of humor. They are missing a great deal.

Funny how you said you watch 'I Love Lucy' sometimes. It was a great show, of course, but last night Ron and I felt like just chilling out to something on video and we popped in the first season of The Munsters. LOL
