Turning 55

At 4:54 a.m. on October 2nd 1955, I arrived on this earth as the birthing physician slapped my little baby butt, and I let out my first spoken word….

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Enter….Ronald Robert Carnavil.

And yet, here I am at almost 55 years old; uttering that same word….

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA……..I’M OLD!!!!

Yes folks, tomorrow I will be turning 55.

Which is so much better than turning 69, because I've always HATED that position.

Actually, the truth be told, I thoroughly enjoy getting older. Okay, I admit that my hairline has receded and is now 55% gray, and that my face has lost about 55% of it’s elasticity, and that my gonads are now hanging only about 5 inches from the floor.

But hey….that’s what hair dye, Botox, and Victoria’s Secret Push-Up Underwear is for, isn‘t it?

When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to get older. And even though I had an awesome childhood home life, I longed for the day to be out on my own like Barbie, and have my own cool-looking retro apartment, while preparing a romantic candlelight dinner for Ken with my Easy-Bake Oven.

I use to flippantly tell my mother, “I can’t WAIT until I’m old enough to move out of this house and get my own apartment.”

And she would laughingly reply, “Yeah, and just WAIT until you move out of this house and get your own apartment and have to pay your own BILLS!”

Um….and she was right.

But all kidding aside, I wouldn’t trade my years for all the youth in the world. I truly love my life and all the peaks and valley’s its taken me through. Yes, physically I’ve changed, but its been my life experiences which have brought me to where I am today, that reflect my physical appearance at 55.

I look exactly as I should.

My face and body represent the road map to where I’ve traveled. And it’s been a fabulous 55 year old journey, that only makes me look forward to the future.

I think the thing I have most enjoy about getting older, is that I don’t take myself or life as seriously as I did when I was younger.

Age has a wonderful way of making you not only wiser, but also retaining your youth.

Because as you age, you must never forget to allow your silly inner child to come out and play….

Thank you all for being a BIG part of my life’s journey.

Wishing you a playful weekend everyone!

  1. First off Ron, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you have celebration in your plans.

As I approach 54, I completely relate to your aging theories. I only wish a few of these nagging aches and pains weren't a part of the process. And no matter how old I get, I will never lose the child inside of me. It's nice to act like a kid now and then.

  2. well, happy birthday, darling...even if it is a bit early isn't it....why not start celebrating early? i always take a week for my birthday, at least i did when i could eat wheat, thus sweets of the baked variety...loved all the wonderful pics in this and what you wanted to do when you grew up with ken..hahaha, did you share that with mum too? she sounds wonderful. and i am older than you too, isn't that just disgusting...ugh. age for me has meant many problems in the body area thus so far, not fun but am hoping things just get tired and leave me alone.

on a different note, thank you sweet, for your comments on my posts lately...you are one of my favorite people and always i love what you have to say...i wish we didn't have to go through suffering tho, i hate it!! anyway, your post on cockroaches, well THE cockroach from hell, was hysterical but the Japanese screen? i always have a shoe handy and detest roaches tho we don't have them much here...we were in hawaii on the 17th floor of some hotel of the expensive variety and out they came in the dark...OMG-do you think i could get husband to see one of those little bastards?? how the hell do they get so fast? and not kidding, hundreds were in the room, completely infested, like bedbugs in NY!! here, spiders are rampant and everywhere and happen to be what i will do all kinds of antics to avoid...they scare me more than mice and now i am trying to make friends with them, facing my fear and leaving them alone...saying hello to the huge brown recluse[kidding but...]that comes out at night to greet me on my way to the kitchen, her shadow doubling her size, i know she does that on purpose, i am sure of it.

dear ron, thanks for the laughs and here's to many more years together, even if there is a screen between us...in reality, you are right here beside me...have some cake. let's start early.

  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! OOH, OOH, I could just go on and on and tell you how wonderfully terrific and totally fabu you are, but I'm going with....
    The
    Dreaded
    Birthday
    Dirge
I love this thing. A friend sent one to me one year so I feel obligated to keep it going.

Also known as the Viking Birthday Song and other names, it's a strange and depressing, yet quite funny tune.
The lyrics and length varies. Here's an assortment. With each thud, just picture me banging a big wooden club on the floor as I try to grunt out the tune in my best Russian accent.

It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
Doom and gloom and dark despair
    People dying everywhere!
On your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
May the candles on your cake
Burn like cities in your wake.
On your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
Burn the castle and storm the keep
Kill the women, but save the sheep
For your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
This one lesson you must learn
First you pillage, then you burn
On your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
While you eat your birthday stew
We will loot the town for you,
On your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
Just be glad the friends you've got
    Haven't found out you-know-what
On your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
    I'm a leper, can't you see
Have a birthday kiss from me
On your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
It's your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)
    It's your birthday never fear
You'll be dead this time next year
On your Birthday! (thud!) Happy Birthday! (thud!)

  4. Hello Matty~

    Awwwww...thank you so much, neighbor!

Yes, I'll be going out to dinner with a dear friend of mine who also has a birthday this month. We're going out for BURGERS - yummy!

And I know exactly how you feel about the body getting more aches and pains because I've just recently had a few issues with my teeth - OY VEY!

" And no matter how old I get, I will never lose the child inside of me. It's nice to act like a kid now and then."

You said it! And good for you for acting like a kid now and then. It's fun, isn't it?

Thanks for stopping by, Matty! Such a pleasure meeting you!

    Have a great weekend!

    ((( Linda )))

"...loved all the wonderful pics in this and what you wanted to do when you grew up with ken..hahaha, did you share that with mum too?"

No, not then, but she reads my blog so she'll know it NOW!

    Bwahhahahahahahaha!

And yes, she is such a wonderful lady. You would love her!

OH. MY GOD. Your bug story made me scream with HORROR!!!

"and not kidding, hundreds were in the room, completely infested, like bedbugs in NY!!"

    Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

One time while I was sleeping, I woke up to about 10 of those cockroaches CRAWLING all over me!!! I couldn't sleep in that bed for two weeks! Yes, spiders freak me out too - BIG time. Especially the big HAIRY ones!!!

"here's to many more years together, even if there is a screen between us...in reality, you are right here beside me...have some cake."

Thank you, Linda! You're such a sweetheart!

    Have a beautiful weekend!

  7. Happy Birthday to my newfound blogging friend. I knew there was a reason for opening the bubbly. I'm happy that you've enjoyed your life, Ron ... you've certainly enhanced ours. Now stop wittering and get that glass out of the cupboard. CHEERS!
    PS love the pictures.

  8. Happy Birthday! I will have to give you a call this weekend. I hope you are going to be with friends, a bottle of champagne, and something yummy to eat. I will be sending you warm thoughts.

You couldn't pay me enough to go back to my twenties but I do miss how much better the body bounces back when you are young. Although, I sometimes think how interesting it would be being able to go back but with all the knowledge and wisdom (that's questionable) I have now. There is so much crap I would never have put up with and needless tears I wouldn't have shed. Oh well, I guess that's the point of growing up.

  9. Oh HAPPY BIRTHDAY and Many Happy Returns to you for tomorrow my lovely friend.

I so agree with you - life can get better as one gets older - it all depends on your outlook on life doesn't it?

I'm happier now at 60 and retired than I've ever been.

I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow and get some beautiful cards and presents my lovely. xxxx

  12. Gooood Morning Jen~

Thank you, dear friend! Yes, yes...I will be having dinner with a good friend of mine who also has a birthday this month. We're going to our favorite place for a delicious big fat burger and some vino!

"You couldn't pay me enough to go back to my twenties"

Me neither. When I look back on my twenties and compare it to my fifties, I am so much more content and relaxed right now.

"Although, I sometimes think how interesting it would be being able to go back but with all the knowledge and wisdom (that's questionable) I have now."

Exactly. I think that's why they say, "Youth is wasted on the young."

But then again, it's not really wasted if we GROW and LEARN.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, Jen! You're a pal!

    Have a GREAT weekend!

Yes, your first comment DID go through. I've been having the same problem leaving comments on people who have Blogger blogs for the past three days. I keep getting the same error message.

    Grrrrrrrrr!

Anyway....THANK YOU, my friend! I had a wonderful birthday on Saturday.

Yes...a celebratory coffee SOON. Starting next week my hours at work go back to normal, so perhaps we can set something up for then. Just email me and let me know your schedule.

    Can't wait!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by!

    Happy Monday!

  58. Oh my gosh!! Happy Belated Birthday, Ron! I'm so sorry I missed it.

What a great attitude you have. You're exactly right. All of your experiences have made you the awesome person you are today!

I was just looking in the mirror last night at some tiny wrinkles that were starting to form around my eyes and I thought the same thing, "I've earned these!"

Now, my sagging boobs are another story...
