Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that seems to be commercially geared towards those who celebrate coupleship; leaving some of those who are single to feel left out, depressed, and having thoughts of sticking their head into a gas oven without the pilot lit.

I can’t tell you how many people have said to me this year, “I hate Valentine’s Day because it’s a constant reminder that I’m alone, without someone to love or love me.”

I find this puzzling and utterly sad.

I’ve been single for over 20 years, yet I’ve never once allowed Valentine’s Day to make me feel alone or unloved because I’m not in a relationship with a partner.

Valentine’s Day to me is a celebration of love of all kinds, not just love as it pertains to having a boyfriend or girlfriend, or a husband or wife.

Valentine’s Day is about LOVE. Period.

Perhaps I’m strange, but I always feel love.

The love I share with my family.

The love I share with my friends.

The love I share when a baby smiles at me.

The love I share while witnessing a beautiful sunset.

And the love I share with myself.

I may be single, but I’m not alone or unloved.

On the contrary, I’m blessed with an abundance of love and companionship.

So, if you’re one of those single people who feels left out on Valentine’s Day, I ask that you notice just how much love you have in your life.

And I bet you’re blessed too……

Happy Heart-On Day Everyone!

  1. i totally agree! sometimes it takes much more than an effort to truly see the beauty of everything, to see more perspective than what we assume at first glance or thought. we had all experience being single, or some might even have their partner being outstation during this very day. but that doesn't mean we are unloved or has no mean to love others as much. love is everywhere! i do find myself absolutely blessed to have a partner to celebrate it with, but i too have experience valentine without a partner. what is to be depressed about? it is a mindset that does nothing else but trapping us. there are plenty of other friends, or even family members, to hang out with on this very loving day!

  4. You're a wisened man. You see much more broadly than others who lament that which they don't have. Which is a very good reminder for me today. Pretty easy to get stuck in that self pitying stuff today. That's something I can't genuinely afford to do at this moment in time.

I'll try to set a date for a pity party and stick to it. Black accessories and everything! Balloons even, maybe!!!
    Until then.......broaden my perspective!

  5. Ron, I am always humbled by folks with such a positive attitude like you have. Sometimes I've been made to feel bad for enjoying Valentine's Day. It's always been my favorite holiday, for some weird reason. As a kid, I got a kick out of choosing each cartoon valentine for my classmate and secretly putting it in their paper lunch bag.

You are so right - it's not a holiday solely for lovers, but for those who love life!

So, Happy Valentine's Day to you, my newest blogger friend! Thanks for making me smile!

  7. Nicely said Ron. I think it's good that we have a Hallmark Holiday that celebrates love, but I can't understand why people get so down from the commercialization of Valentine's Day. It all started with St. Valentine who was killed for his faith on February 14 because he refused to worship pagan gods. He fell in love with the daughter of his jailer and would pass notes to her signed, from your Valentine. False Gods, Jail, and Secret Notes - sounds like a romance novel for sure.

  9. Beautiful post, Ron. My family doesn't celebrate Valentines Day for the simple reason that we don't need to. We love throughout the year not just on one day. And really if that's the case we don't have to prove it on that one day. I had sixteen years alone and married for double that and was very happy in both situations and if hubs doesn't agree with that I'll shout at him until he gives in. You can tell I know how to treat him when he goes into awkward mode....grins. Having said all that I did put a likkle poem on the blog to celebrate. Have a marvellous week.

  20. What a beautiful post my dear friend. It's evident that you are truly loved and you feel it and share it freely. You are one of those very fortunate people who is secure enough in your own skin that you don't need someone else to complete you. You are very blessed.

#2 - I LOVE Chicago (the movie) and love that clip.

#3 - You WOULD have to add that shirt! LOL It reminds me of a saying this friend of mine (years ago when I was single) had. Whenever he'd have on a cologne I liked I'd ask "Mnnn... what is that you have on?" And his reply was "Well, I've got a hard on but I didn't know you could smell it!" You would think I would have learned not to ask him that..... I just know you can appreciate that story!

Isn't the shirt faaaaaaaaabulous? I saw the photo online and had to nab it for this post.

  23. Love the shirt! Love is more important on a daily basis than on one day a year. I used to hate Valentines when I was in high school as it made me feel unloved as I watched all the couples around me...like we knew soooo much about love in high school. Of course, I do like it now, but even so I cherish the little tokens of love throughout each day more than anything done on this day. Happy Valentines Day to you!

  24. Valentine's (and every day) is about giving not getting.
I've been single, married, single . . . In primary school when kids exchanged Valentines, I don't remember ever getting one. I felt so sad and alone. But being in the School of Life, I earned that V Day is another day to layer on that love and gratitude all around. Married, single, whatever, how can we be alone with so many people to love?
So HAPPY HEART DAY to every living being on the planet.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ron, this post is so poignant! You know what else those miserable single people don't understand? That more than half of the couples who are celebrating will be putting hexes on each other by this time next year. Also? What about all the people, myself included, who HATE Valentine's Day even though they are part of a couple. There are plenty of couples who hate this day just as much as single people because of all that goddam obligation behind it.

So my husband and I simply don't do the obligatory thing and I can happily wish everyone else a good one, so...Happy Valentine's Day, sweetie!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nicely said, dear one! Even though I do have a wonderful partner, I certainly appreciate all the other love I have to give and receive in my life.
I felt a little sad yesterday when I noticed on my girlfriend's FB page something about it being no wonder the day is connected to a massacre, 10 reasons why the day sucks, and wishing the weekend were over and wanting to skip right past Monday. I understand where she comes from (separated from her husband and also her one daughter living far away) but at the same time, like you said the day should just be about LOVE itself and I know she is loved by many and has a great big heart so I hope she'll end up enjoying the day somehow.

p.s. let me know if you will be parading down the streets of Philly in your cool shirt. I'll be over to take pictures of your big heart! ;)

My mother's been in the hospital for the last 3 weeks and was just transferred to a rehab facility. I went to see her yesterday and took her flowers and a little beagle stuffed animal.

As I was walking down the maze of halls to her room, I heard patients that I passed in common areas say, "no one brought me flowers today" and it made me so sad. I wanted to stop and hug them all!

There are far too many jaded people out there who can't see the forest for the trees, forever complaining about one thing or another. You're right on the money. 53. I am so with you on this post. There is no way to love Love is the way. When you love yourself and you fill your heart space with love, I mean cram that love in there so there is no space for anything else.
Then all you have to give is love and when you give love out that is what is returned. I am not talking about romance I am talking about love. The love that makes you feel as if there nothing under your feet as you walk. The love that makes a young child smile or a cat purr. The love that trees provide when they give us shade. The love of the fragrance of the flower. Love is the kiss of a mother on a sore of a child. Love is the time you spend in awe on God's gift. Love is you love is me we are love. For all those who feel unloved I LOVE YOU.
