My Journey into Energy Work (Pt.2)

When first becoming a Reiki (Ray-Key) practitioner, the student goes through a procedure, whereby a Reiki Master/Teacher administers a series of hands-on attunements, preparing them to become a clear and open channel through which Universal life force energy will flow.

After the attunements, the student will very often experience a deep cleansing process which can induce a purging of things that need to be healed. As the Reiki energy rearranges the students newly attuned energetic system, an internal housecleaning takes place.

Reiki starts, by healing the practitioner first.

Every student is different. Some will experience more of a physical cleansing, some more emotional.

My cleansing was emotional. And when I say emotional….I mean EMOTIONAL.

I went through a tremendous amount of anger at first. I felt like an exposed nerve for almost a year; getting angry at the smallest things. I was always pissed. I kept a journal during this time, and when I went back to read what I had written, I noticed that the base of my anger was rooted and directed at myself. All my life I had placed WAY too much pressure on myself to be perfect.

And by perfect I mean, I had a compulsive need to achieve this preconceived vision of what I thought I had to do to change myself in order to achieve perfection, yet at the same time trying desperately to accept myself. It was not possible to do both.

That’s why I was so angry.

It was like a vicious cycle. My only focus had always been on all the things I didn’t like about myself, so how could I ever accept myself?

I came to realize that I first had to accept myself for who and what I was. Ironically, once I slowly started doing that I no longer felt the constant drive to change myself. The changes within me simply occurred naturally, without any need to do anything, other than to embrace the changes.

I began to relax into my life, allowing ‘it’ to guide me. I stopped judging myself and defused my unattainable vision of perfection.

All of this came to light because of Reiki. And even though during that first year of deep cleansing, while I sometimes felt as if my life was falling apart, it was Reiki that showed me my life was actually coming together; supporting me through the process.

In 1999, I became a certified Foot Reflexologist. Reflexology is based on the principle that when reflex points on the feet are stimulated, a healing is possible. And all though this modality is applied physically, the effects of the treatment are based on energy work.

About 6 months after my certification was completed, I began using a combination of both Reiki and Reflexology in my treatment sessions with clients, and the results were very positive.

In 2001, I moved back east and worked part time at a day-spa sharing my services. I enjoyed my time there, however I felt like I wasn’t in the best environment for what I was truly meant to do with my training. Reiki has a way of guiding each individual to where they can serve the most.

I felt myself being pulled to work with people who were either seriously ill or dying. I know that may sound depressing to most of you, yet serious illness and death are things that have never made me feel uncomfortable, or have caused me to want to look away.

I eventually discovered a non-denomination spiritual center that offered their services for free, to those living with the HIV virus. So, I interviewed to volunteer and was accepted. I volunteered there for four years, until the center lost its funding.

During those fours years, I learned more about the power of Reiki than anywhere else. As I shared in my previous post, there are times when a physical illness may not ever be completely healed, however through Reiki, we can heal how we live with it. I can honestly say that the clients I worked on, gave ME much more than I ever gave THEM. Because they showed me how to live a full and rich life in spite of a serious illness. The life stories they shared with me, touched my own life in ways I’ve never been so deeply touched.

Many of the clients I volunteered with are still living strong and quality lives. Yet, a few have passed on.

And although I experienced pain and sadness in those losses, I was also left with an invaluable understanding.

Whenever we reach out to touch someone in an offering to heal….we are also healed.

That’s Reiki.

  1. Good morning, Ron! I love the photos you have used in these posts about Reiki.
You are so right, accepting oneself is key! I'm still sort of going thru the cleansing process in some ways.
Some may think that when a person attains a 'master' level in something that they are better or have learned all there is to learn or really 'mastered' the subject. With Reiki, that is so not so. I could feel that I was being allowed to take that class because it was something that I wanted, and it was meant to happen as well, but I also know that I am not ready to teach it yet. I've started the process and am finding quite interestingly that it's slowly, very slowly, showing me where I need to go and that I still have work to do in a few different areas. I've noticed a couple of very small shifts within myself, maybe they are so small that it's only slightly noticeable to me, but something is there... and that something is the blessing and the guidance of Reiki.
It's so wonderful that you were able to go into the volunteer work you did with those patients. A rewarding experience for you and all of them too. I think you will become involved again somehow.
Thank you for both posts on Reiki.
Wishing you a very happy week! xo

  2. "Whenever we reach out to touch someone in an offering to heal….we are also healed." i love this phrase. it reminds me of the law of attraction. you attract what you want most. n often what we think of most. i like the sound of this healing option you mentioned. i totally understand your "perfection" personality, i kinda share that. n only recently was i able to see it n know how to be grateful of who we are n how we are.

  3. You know, many years ago, after taking my dog to the healer and seeing the benefits and visiting him myself, I thought about getting involved.

I asked 'healer guy' about it and he seemed hesitant for some reason, even though he'd told me that it was unusual to be able to feel the energy as I could and had told me that I could probably be a healer 'when I was ready'. But he put me in touch with a group who were closer to me and I went to a few meetings. I didn't like them. They seemed to me to be a little too on the 'mystery-sanctimony-lighted candles in a dark room' side, and had an almost evangelical light in their eyes, and I had a personally bad experience with what I was told was 'charging'; heat in my hands that wouldn't go away. So I stopped going.

And now I think I understand his reluctance. Clearly I was not ready. Maybe I will never be ready. Maybe I just need to balance myself first - and heaven knows I'm pretty out of kilter these days on so many levels!

Thanks for the posts, Ron. Very thought-provoking .. and as we Quakers would say they 'speak' to me. I imagine they speak to a lot of people on a personal level, while passing a lot by as 'quite interesting' only to be forgotten tomorrow. Which is as it should (or perhaps needs to) be.

  4. After reading about the benefits in your excellent post I really will have to investigate Reiki. Thanks for the pronunciation prompt - I always pronounced it Ri-key. The only struggle I've had, and it was a lifetime one, stemmed from constant remarks from my mother: 'What will people think?' 'Fasten up your coat, what will people think?' 'Don't speak until you're spoken to,' that sort of thing. I was a mess of worry.
I grew up always trying to make 'them' think well of me. Only now, XX number of years later, can I relax and be myself. I could have done with a Reiki practitioner years ago. Well, it's not too late, is it? Have a fantastic week, my friend.

  8. Goooood Morning Crystal Chick~

Thank you, my friend. I got the photos off the internet and I am so grateful for them because they really expressed how I see and feel Reiki.

Isn't it something, how Reiki teaches us to know when the right time to move forward is ready? I too took my levels slowly, because I needed the in between time to heal myself. It's a continuous journey of movement, growth, and like you shared, shifts.

I hope to one day be volunteering Reiki and Reflexology again. There's a non-denominationl church that offers help to those living with HIV. I'm going to walk over and see if they can use my services. I really miss sharing Reiki in that way.

Thank you soooooooooooo much for stopping back again and reposted your previous comment, and also this one. You're a sweetheart!

Yes, you're right....it IS like the law of attraction - what we think!

"i totally understand your "perfection" personality, i kinda share that. n only recently was i able to see it n know how to be grateful of who we are n how we are."

I will still sometimes catch myself being a perfectionist, and I have to SLAP myself awake and say, "Hey Ron, get over it!" HA!

"Thanks for the pronunciation prompt - I always pronounced it Ri-key.'

Oh, you're very welcome. It's a strange word to see or pronunciate, therefore I thought I'd better give a prompt, so that people would know.

"The only struggle I've had, and it was a lifetime one, stemmed from constant remarks from my mother: 'What will people think?' 'Fasten up your coat, what will people think?' 'Don't speak until you're spoken to,' that sort of thing. I was a mess of worry.
I grew up always trying to make 'them' think well of me."

Yup...I know EXACTLY what you mean because I had the same upbringing. My parents meant well, but I think because they were also brought up the same way, they taught us the same thing.

"Make sure people think WELL of you."

I finally realized, XX number of years later, I can relax and be myself too because people are going to think well or not well of me, regardless of how WELL I act - HA!

Thank you very much for stopping by and reading my posts on Reiki, dear lady! You're a GEM!

  15. You always explain things so well Ron.

I have always thought that Reiki works better on an emotional rather than a physical level, giving the recipient the wherewithall to deal with whatever ails them rather than curing the physical complaint.

  16. Good Morning Jay~

First, allow me to share....I'm glad you followed your 'gut feelings' and stopped going to the meetings. I have to be honest and say, that I too have experienced several 'energy healing groups' that I didn't care for. And for the same reason that YOU shared....

"They seemed to me to be a little too on the 'mystery-sanctimony-lighted candles in a dark room' side, and had an almost evangelical light in their eyes..."

I tend to be more 'casual' when it comes to explaining or sharing my energy work. I think helps others to feel more open and casual about it themselves.

It's like with anything, there are extremes. I too have experienced several energy healing groups that were not only extreme, but also had a sort of 'snobbiness' about them. It was THEIR way or NO way. I'm sorry, but that's not what healing energy is about. Each person is different, therefore each person will have a different way of experiencing or sharing energy. Your way may be different than theirs, but that doesn't mean your 'not ready.' If YOU feel you're not ready is one thing, but if someone else ever insinuates that, I don't think it's right. Only YOU can know.

Trust me, I don't think I ever thought I was 'ideally ready' to become a Reiki practitioner, however I just KNEW I wanted to become one. And as it turned out, once I became a practitioner, Reiki is the thing that balanced me. And continues to do so. It's a never-ending process. I STILL get out of kilter - HA!

Follow your heart, Jay....and when you feel the time is right, you'll just know.

Much thanks for stopping by and sharing on both these posts, dear lady. You've added much! So glad we've met!

    Have a wonderful week!

  18. Good Morning Lady Dianne~

As I shared with Crystal Chick, I was so happy to find these photos online, because they really expressed how I see and feel Reiki.

    "especially the purple

I believe my aura is purple although I can't find anyone to confirm that."

Well, if you believe it...then it is! Purple is one of the most powerful and healing colors. So, is green.

"it was interesting to me to learn that mastering Reikki caused those angry feelings at first
that's very much how I felt after my very first therapy sessions with a shrink."

Isn't is something how various forms of therapy will do that? They seem to bring things to a head, and then reveal the cause; healing them.

Much thanks for stopping by, dear lady! Your comments and energy are always enjoyed and appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Have a wonderful week!

  19. Good Morning Akelamalu~

Thank you. I try to explain things as simple as possible. As if I were someone who didn't know about something, but wanted to know.

"I have always thought that Reiki works better on an emotional rather than a physical level, giving the recipient the wherewithall to deal with whatever ails them rather than curing the physical complaint."

You said it! And I couldn't agree with you more. When the emotions are healed, the physical can be delt with more positively.

I think A LOT of people go through this because of either what we were taught as children, or what society tells us.

For me, Reiki brought things to light so that I could see what it was that I was doing to myself, and helped me to refocus my attention.

Even though I still have moments of self-perfectionism, I've gotten much, much better at letting it go. Whenever I feel that critical eye coming out, I give myself a dose of Reiki and it truly helps to put things back into perspective for me.

  29. How could you have things to dislike about yourself?

I think it's probably how spiritual healing works, when it works. They say they are the channel for the Holy Spirit to work through, but they could also be a channel for energy to flow through, even if they are not aware of it. Not that I am making little of all the needed training to practice Reiki. I just think that sometimes a person could have the ability and maybe not even be aware of it?

You can probably tell I know nothing about it really :)

  30. Hellooooooo Babs~

"How could you have things to dislike about yourself?"

HA! Well, I think it's all in one's perspective. What we see as perhaps a negative trait, may only be in our own heads. Oddly enough, some of the things I use to try and change about myself, are the things I now enjoy about myself.

"They say they are the channel for the Holy Spirit to work through, but they could also be a channel for energy to flow through, even if they are not aware of it."

Yes, absolutely....Reiki is only ONE form of energy practice. There are many others. Like you, I think that some people have a natural ability and maybe not even aware of it.

  35. Helloooooo my Libra friend Meleah~

"I wonder if this would work for my Crohn's disease, celicas, and food allergy issues?"

My feeling is this, it could help in 'some' way. I've seen it do some amazing things for intestinal, back, and spinal issues. Reiki produces a wonderful sense of overall relaxation, so I'm pretty sure it would help during a painful bout of Crohn's. I had friend in Florida who also has Crohn's, and OMG, I know how painful that can be.

If you're interested, check out the bulletin board at a Whole Foods near you. They usually have business cards and brochures of Reiki practitioners, massage therapists, acupuncturists , etc. on the wall.

  37. Ron - That was so amazing. Thank you for sharing all of that. I can only imagine what a fulfilling experience it was to work with such seriously ill individuals. It sounds like they healed you as much as you healed them. It is so fascinating what happens when you open yourself up to other people in even the smallest of ways. I'm truly beginning to understand that in my latest life journey. You are one of those wonderful connections.

  38. Wow. What a powerful share. And what a powerful experience for you--and for everyone your life has touched, including me.

I know all about needing to heal me before I can effectively help someone. Not that I can't help prior to that--but if I want to be more effective I know I have to 'have my own house in order'. I'm all for the practicianor healing first. I wish that was the practice for more. Seriously, I end up doing therapy with my therapists--not an all bad thing...but I'm a firm believer that there's a degree of effectiveness and credibility when you can and DO have your own house in order. I think it's the authencity factor, maybe.

Regardless--that self loathing, keeping track of all things wrong with Ron...I'm so glad you've let that past time go. Human beings have a habit of keeping that tally and neglecting the 'all things RIGHT with me' one. You're a good fella--that self loathing rips off others from your greatness. THAT would be a pity, yaknow?

  39. Hi Ron. I found your blog by browsing through blogcatalog.

I'd love to find a Reiki healer. I have fibromyalgia, chronic migraines and myofascial pain disorder (ouch, huh). I do "reflexology" on myself (self-taught just like html, blog design, etc).

I can totally relate to “perfectionism”, I’m working on breaking that a bit myself. There are days when I feel like I’ll never break it, then others when I feel like I’ve really made major strides! I guess it’s a long journey, but to me, that’s what life is.

  40. Hey Jen~

"I can only imagine what a fulfilling experience it was to work with such seriously ill individuals. It sounds like they healed you as much as you healed them."

Honestly, I truly felt like I received more than I gave. Every day I volunteered, I walked away learning more and more about my own life.

The beauty of Reiki is that when you offer it....it becomes a "shared" experience.

    BOTH people receive.

"It is so fascinating what happens when you open yourself up to other people in even the smallest of ways."

    It sure is, Jen!

Welcome! Thank you so much for stopping by and introducing yourself. So nice to meet you!

That's so great to hear you do reflexology on yourself! VERY good! My feeling is that ANYONE can learn it, whether self-taught or trained. Before I actually got trained, I did it on myself too. So, keep on.

Hey, I noticed from your blog profile page, that you live in Pennsylvania? So do I! Philly. There are a lot of Reiki practitioners here in PA. You should be able to find someone in your area, by either asking a massage therapist if they know of anyone, or perhaps even they do it themselves. You can also check your local health food store, to see if they advertise any bodyworkers in your area. Many bodyworkers do a combination of treatments.

Yeah, don't you LOVE being a perfectionist? HA!

"There are days when I feel like I’ll never break it, then others when I feel like I’ve really made major strides! I guess it’s a long journey, but to me, that’s what life is."

"...but I'm a firm believer that there's a degree of effectiveness and credibility when you can and DO have your own house in order. I think it's the authencity factor, maybe."

I agree, Mel! And not that the practitioner has to be a 'guru', but that he/she at least understands the healing process through their OWN healing. It like you can 'relate' to the client.

"Human beings have a habit of keeping that tally and neglecting the 'all things RIGHT with me' one.'

You're soooooooooooooo correct, dear lady! And thank GOD, because Reiki helped me to REALLY understand and see that. And continues to do so.

Thank you, dearest lady! Not only for stopping by and sharing a beautiful comment, but also for being in my life. Please know what a joy and healing you bring to my life through your blog.

    I'm sooooooooooooo glad we met!

  43. Foot Reflexologist? I can *totally* see that working. There are countless nerve endings in the foot that one can easily affect other parts of the body by manipulating the feet. I think that's why Karin likes it when I rub her feet at night.

It's easy to see how, with your amazing personality and dedication to the healing arts, you've been able to positively affect people in some remarkable ways!

Aaaaaah, yes, I bet she does! Foot Reflexology is freakin' amazing! I never realized HOW effective it was until I got involved in it. Even just having someone rub your feet can produce so many wonderful benefits. Not to mention how relaxing it is.

Thank you so much for stopping by and your kind words. You're a pal!

Hope you're having a faaaaaaaabulous week!

X to you, Karin, and Tyler!

P.S. I'm so glad you added your avatar. It looks great!

  45. Wow. I want to print this out and hand it to someone when they ask me to explain what Reiki is.

I really think it's been helping me to deal the loss of Mom. I feel much more at peace with her passing than with Dad's. Of course, maybe it's just because I know that they're together now but it just feels like more than that.

I SO wish we lived in the same town!

Oh, meeeeeee too! And not only to share Reiki, but also to just get together and talk whenever we felt like it.

However, I do think one day we will meet.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope you, Bern, and Vinny are doing well.

Have a great rest of your week!

  47. Hello Ron,

Your are correct in saying that when Reiki comes to a practitioner in an attunement then a cleansing takes place and our blocked enegy field begins to open and flow. It is then when the switch is on and the energy is free to flow and go then we can aid in the overall healing of another and ourselves. For every time we move that wonderful energy around we receive as well as give this grace of comfort and peace. The healing that takes place in an individual, is the healing that is needed at that time. It could be mental, emotional, spiritual or physical. Most times a physical aliment is the result of a blocked energy center that happens to manifest in the physical realm. So we may want to have the pain in our back relieved but the healing in the heart chakra may need to be dealt with. There are so many factors involved in energy therapy. Yet when we use the advice of a counselor, the therapy of a therapist the medicene of a physican and the energy of a practitioner then we give the individual the opportunity to heal completely. And when the intention of the people who administer the help is one of unconditional love then the energy level gets kicked up a notch and things happen in synch with the universe and God.

    Namaste

Exactly! All things working in harmony.

    And I agree....
