One of the most glorious and memorial days of my life was ten years ago, when I realized I would no longer need a car moving back to a city.

ALLELUIA!

You see, I’m one of those people who LOVES not having a car, therefore living in a city with public transportation at my fingertips is perfect for someone like me.

I’ve never been a car person.

Most people feel as though a car gives them more freedom (even here in the city). But to me a car is like a monkey on my back, with maintenance, insurance, parking, and periodic repairs which NEVER seem to be covered under the warranty.

Yes, living in a city does have its expenses, although it evens itself out by not having a car. It’s a trade-off. Yet, I still feel like I save more money by not having a car. And if I do occasionally travel somewhere way outside the city limits, there is always the option of renting a car for the day.

Most of the time I simply walk all over town. But, sometimes I do use the transit system.

My favorite mode of public transportation is the subway. I don’t normally use the bus because I find that I can walk much faster. A bus is constantly stopping for either a pickup or a traffic jam.

Stop, start. Stop, start. Stop, start.

A subway moves fast. And I enjoy its clickety-clack sound and swaying movement. To me, it’s very relaxing. Like a train.

The only time a subway can be uncomfortable is during the summer. The subway stations are not air conditioned, however the subway cars are. So yes, you can get a bit sweaty while waiting on the platform through the months of July and August.

Many people here in Philadelphia don’t like riding the subway because it means going underground, and that frightens them. But as I see it, your chances of getting mugged on the street are far greater than underground because there are usually more police patrolling the subways than the streets. Ironically, I enjoy descending underground; walking through the maze of twisty tunnels. I kinda feel like the Phantom Of The Opera.

Subways have never frightened me.

On the contrary, subway travel is such a unique human experience. There you are, up close and personal; sometimes seeing the most shocking and inescapable sights.

I could write a whole book on some of the things I've seen while riding a subway.

I remember one time being on a NYC subway and sitting across from a woman who had obviously passed out from too much alcohol or crack consumption. She was sprawled face up on one of the seats. Her legs were spread eagle while wearing a dress. At one point I looked over and noticed she wasn’t wearing any underwear.

Ooops!

It gave a whole new meaning to Busch Gardens.

Call me weird, but ADORE subways.

They’re fast, efficient, and yup, sometimes even a little bazaar.

But hey, that’s why I love city life.....I AM bazaar.

So, if you’re ever in Philadelphia for a visit, I'll treat you to a ride on the subway.

Just make sure you have your underwear on.

I LOVEEEEE subways, too!! Any city, no matter where- except maybe for L.A.- but when I travel in Europe- I LOVE getting around by subway/metro/tube.. whatever! : )
Fast and efficient... Wait til you come to Paris one day and try out ours!

Hugs to you and have a STELLAR week...

  2. That's okay then. I just bought some new knickers. I couldn't manage without a car... physically, I mean, but I know what you mean about the freedom of NOT having one. As for subways, we don't have that facility where we live but London has it's own Tube system which would take me an eternity to get used to. Our subways are merely tunnels for pedestrians who want to cross a busy road, and I HATE THEM. It's where drunks and weirdos hang out. There are moves afoot in my city to remove subways for that reason. I wonder why I always babble when I come on your blog? Have a brilliant and beautiful week.

  3. LOVE IT! I live in a small city with a population of 45,000. I would love to live in a big city where subway transportation is the norm. Maybe I'll be fortunate enough to visit someday.

God, Ron, I feel exactly the same way. I gave up my car 12 years ago when I moved back to Brooklyn and I don't miss it at all. I've dreamed about moving to LA for years, but every time I visit my uncle out there, I look at those clogged freeways and see myself stuck in traffic on a daily basis. Ugh!

Nice bit about the Busch Gardens. Bill Cosby did a routine about the New York subways back in the Sixties called "A Nut In Every Car." I think it still applies today.

    Great post! Take care!

Aren't subways a great way to get around? Yes, I hear that the subway systems in Europe are faaaaaaabulous! I think the best I've experienced, so far, were in NYC and Japan. OMG...the ones in Japan are spotlessly clean!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Always great to see ya! Have a STELLAR week!

    Bwhahhahahahahhahhahaha! You CRACK ME UP!

" I couldn't manage without a car... physically, I mean, but I know what you mean about the freedom of NOT having one."

Yes, I totally understand that living outside a city, you MUST have a car to get around. Up until I moved back here, I had one too. The bus system in Florida is almost non-existent, so a car is mandatory.

"As for subways, we don't have that facility where we live but London has it's own Tube system which would take me an eternity to get used to."

I have a friend who now lives in Wimbeldon, who use to live in London, who said that the Tube is amazing!

"Our subways are merely tunnels for pedestrians who want to cross a busy road, and I HATE THEM. It's where drunks and weirdos hang out."

HAHAHAHHAHA! Yes, we experience that too, here in Philly. However, the policemen are always patrolling the area, thank god!

I LOVE when you babble, dear lady. You ROCK! Have a brilliant and beautiful week, too! Thank you for stopping by.

I think you would really enjoy a city like Philadelphia because it's not too big, yet it's still a city. It's more like a European city. But, I have a feeling you would also enjoy NYC too. It's actually my favorite city on the east coast. I lived there for 5 years and LOVED it. It's HUGE, INSANE, but faaaaaaaaabulous!!!!

Always so nice seeing your comments. Thank you for stopping by! Have a super week!

As you get older you get more nervous about things. Or maybe it's not age related, but how long it is since you travelled that way.

True! I remember going on the subway in NYC after I had been away for so long and was a tad apprehensive, however once got I got barings, I began to feel more comfortable. NYC has policemen patrolling underground everywhere, so it's pretty safe.

Acckkk!! That would be great IF WE WERE STILL LIVING IN THE 70s!!!

Subways are a novelty to me. Living mostly on the west coast my whole life, we just don't have them. Seattle's got a monorail, and that's cool, but it doesn't go anywhere. I do remember visiting NY in the 70s (when Busch Gardens were all the rage) and riding the subway then. What a dirty, smelly, graffiti-strewn oasis that was.

Yes! Yes! You're right, back in the 70's the NYC subways systems WERE like that. However, you wouldn't believe how they've changed. When I went back, after being away for so long, I thought, "Where's all the graffiti and urine odor?????" HA!

  15. Oh my on the lack of undergarments.....

I would LOVE to not own a car and just be able to walk to the store to get some milk. Damn suburbs. There's NO WHERE I could reasonably walk to. We even lack sidewalks on some of the main roads around here, so it would be dangerous, even if you didn't mind walking 5 miles to get to the drugstore.

I've only been on the NYC, DC and Toronto subways. One thing that did worry me was being pushed onto the path of an oncoming train. I've read too many news stories I guess.

"One thing that did worry me was being pushed onto the path of an oncoming train. I've read too many news stories I guess."

Yup, I know exactly what you mean because I find myself standing way back on the platform while the subway is moving in. I too have heard MANY stories of people being pushed onto the path of an oncoming train - YIKES!

I've also heard of people jumping in front of a train; committing suicide.

  21. Hi Ronnie,
It's nice to be back! I hope that you have been feeling great.
Now, reading your views on subways, you sound a lot like... moi!

I take the subway, too. The suburban lines are loads quicker and more central than the bus to get to city center. I don't like the heat in the trains in the summer( and the BO that comes with it),and the dirtiness. But,it is quick and direct from my home.

You are right "stop-start" can be long, but for some areas I have no choice. Especially suburban areas.

I still have a part of me that is still secretly fascinated by these underground trains. Because I didn't have the subway where I grew up. It was very exciting as an adult to
discover the subway and now I am almost "jaded", as if I lived there all my life!
    NYC...
It really doesn't surprise me that you found a drunk lady "sans" panties. I get the feeling that crazy is normal over there!

Great b&w pic in the end. Urban Philly :))
    See you soon, buddy!

  23. Hey there Barbara~

Welcome back, my friend! It's so good to see you blogging again.

Isn't subway travel GRAND? I hear from many that Paris has an AWESOME underground system. London as well.

" don't like the heat in the trains in the summer( and the BO that comes with it),and the dirtiness."

Yup, the summer heat seems to magnify all the BO, doesn't it? Ewwwwwww!!!

"I still have a part of me that is still secretly fascinated by these underground trains. Because I didn't have the subway where I grew up. It was very exciting as an adult to

True, after a while you do get somewhat jaded. However, I always seem to discover something that causes me to say, "OMG....I've never seen or experienced that before."

    "NYC...

Yup, and crazy is not even the word - HA!

  32. First things first: Great photos!

Secondly: What? Me without a car? That would be like Superman without his cape, Batman without Robin, or Underdog without long johns. "Inconceivable!" as The Princess Bride would put it. But, I guess that's because I live in the suburban nightmare of San Diego where public transportation is nil.

When Karin and I went to the UK we were amazed by the public transit system they have over there. The Underground is fantastic. We went *everywhere* on that thing. It's a same similar systems can't be installed in other major American cities like San Diego. Oh, but what about earthquakes? Are subways designed to endure a large earthquake?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Okay. I laughed when myfwbs referred to her town of 45,000 as 'little'. *laughing* And I'm still laughing!!!

Right. MAYBE 3000 if we're counting cows and pigs.... and tractors.

Not a chance on the subway--nor a bus.
We DID have a bus that ran through here once upon a time..........oh....'bout ten years back? It stopped coming through--wonder why THAT is! LOL

    So no bus.
    No subway.

But we DO have underwear here! I saw it on the neighbors clothes line yesterday.

    I was scared.........

More scared of that than the thought of riding the subway, truth be told......

  34. I like the subways and trains too but they scare me in cities I'm not familiar with. NYC subway scared me although it was much easier than taxis and buses. Here, in Atlanta, we have MARTA trains (MARTA is smarterS) and if we have things to do in a specific area of the city we will ride MARTA and when I worked intown if I had worked near a MARTA station I would have ridden it in a heartbeat. The only thing is we live too far out of the city that we still have to drive like 20 miles to catch a MARTA train or bus!

I didn't ride the subway in Philly although hubby and I did talk about it. Next time we plan on it!

I LOVE trains, subways are kinda freaky, but i got used to it living in London, having to take the underground everywhere. I did however, see someone commit suicide one night by jumping in front of the subway... um, that wasn't so awesome.

i live in a city where i HAVE to have a car. it's all sprawly and shit. I hate it. I think people are much healthier who live in bigger cities cus of all the walking. someday, bestie, i will join you in the city!

When I worked in Philly many years ago I took the speedline over from NJ and that was usually fun. I liked to try and get the front seat in the front car sometimes. I didn't mind being underground. But the vertigo I have has gotten much worse over the years and I find train and bus travel very difficult now. Even in a car I have to be the driver or the passenger or I'm dizzy sick.
But I do so love the idea of train travel. Murder on the Orient Express is such a cool movie! A murder mystery on a train stranded in the snow. Ooh, eerie!
I do want to try a horse and carriage ride one of these days in Philly. That might be slow enough that it wouldn't effect me. Eh, my luck though the poor horse would freak out at something and go taking off thru the streets. haha

"I did however, see someone commit suicide one night by jumping in front of the subway... um, that wasn't so awesome."

SHREEK! OMG, you actually SAW someone commit suicide?!?!? How horrible.

I hear the underground in London is amazing!

"i live in a city where i HAVE to have a car. it's all sprawly and shit. I hate it. I think people are much healthier who live in bigger cities cus of all the walking."

I soooooooooooo agree with you! In fact, I ALWAYS say that people are healthier in cities for the same reason. You should see some of the adorable senior citizens getting around in the city. They walk everywhere at like 80 and 90 years old!

Yes, someday you and I shall meet in the city. I look forward to that!

MUCHO thanks for stopping by, Blunt!

  47. Hiya Pearl~

" ride the bus every day and wouldn't change it for a commute in a car for the world. Sure there's some weirdos out there, but it just makes it all the more interesting!"

    Applause!...applause!

Yup....I couldn't agree with you more! I honestly think the weirdos are the best part of city public transportation. They make for GREAT blog fodder don't they - HA!

Thanks for stopping by, Pearl. Hope you're having a marvi week!

  48. Hey Crystal Chick~

"ACKKK... the visuals on the Busch Garden mention... OHMYPOOREYES!'

Bwhahahahahahahaha! I'm sorry, but I just couldn't resist!

OMG...isn't the speedline faaaaaabulous? I've taken it a few time to Jersery and REALLY enjoyed it. I took Patco to Collingswood a couple of times and it took me no time at all.

Yes, I too enjoy sitting in the first car, to see where we're headed. VERY cool!

"But I do so love the idea of train travel. Murder on the Orient Express is such a cool movie! A murder mystery on a train stranded in the snow. Ooh, eerie!"

Oooo....oooo....you and me BOTH! I LOVE that movie!!! My big time dream is to ride the Orient Express from Turkey to Paris. How fabulous would that be?

"I do want to try a horse and carriage ride one of these days in Philly. That might be slow enough that it wouldn't effect me. Eh, my luck though the poor horse would freak out at something and go taking off thru the streets."

HA! Can you believe in all the years I've been back in Philly, I have never taken a horse and buggy ride? Shame on me! However, I did take one through Central Park in NYC. LOVED IT!

Always such a delight to read your comments, M! Much thanks for stopping by today.

Can you believe the HEAT we're getting already? Friday is suppose to hit 90!!!!

  53. I remember living in Philly and hating even the thought of the subway. London, used it all the time. Philly couldn't handle the smell. I miss being able to walk to everything. Great exercise and I felt so much more connected to where I lived. Ah, I miss both places. Have a stroll in Rittenhouse Square for me!
