Having been a stage actor, people sometimes ask me if it’s harder to perform comedy or drama?

And honestly, I must say that even though it’s my forte, comedy is harder.

Mainly, because you can’t fake funny.

If you don’t believe me, try making yourself produced a laugh, and then try making yourself produce tears. I think you’ll find it much more challenging to make yourself genuinely laugh, than you will tears.

I once heard Bette Davis share in an interview, that she had great difficultly making herself laugh on cue in a scene.

I have found that most comedic actors can easily shift into drama, yet not all dramatic actors can make the shift into comedy.

Comedy is demanding because it’s all about having a keen sixth sense of timing.

You have to feel when to pause for the laughs; sensing when to continue.

Also, comedy must start with truth and seriousness in order for it to be genuinely funny.

A comedic actor must be aware of the humor, but play against it.

In addition, stage comedy relies much on the participation of the audiences audible reaction. So, if you have a dead audience some nights, you have to learn how to rise above it and not permit them to affect your performance.

And in film, comedy is even harder. Because there is no live audience.

Allow me to interject here, that whether it be comedy or drama, I truly believe you cannot be taught how to act.

Acting is a gift.

Sure, you can be taught a ‘technique’, but unless that technique is invisible to the audience, your acting will register as mechanical.

Many times I’ve watched an actor onstage or on the screen trying to use a particular technique, and to me it’s very obvious. Obvious, because I see them thinking about it, rather than trusting that the technique has become second nature.

A true artist knows how to take a technique, and then infuse it with their own natural talent; making it naked to the eye.

I have always found it frustrating to work with other actors who like to talk about and analyze a scene incessantly before rehearsing it. I guess you could call me an 'organic actor' because I don’t act by thinking about it. I act by throwing myself into a scene and then seeing what happens. I let my intuition lead the way.

I started out being a comedic actor because comedy came natural to me. I honestly didn’t think I could ever perform drama because I somehow thought I would over-blow it - and was scared shitless to try it. However, I soon discovered that if I took my understanding of comedy and then applied it to drama, I could do it.

Starting with the truth.

Believing in what I’m doing.

And then just surrendering to the dialogue.

Strangely enough, because of my background in comedy, I was able to uncover the humorous levels in a dramatic character. I mean after all, a human being is not all one thing.

I’ve played some not-very-nice characters in my career, and was able to find bits of humor in them so that the audience didn’t end up totally hating them.

Yes, comedy will always be my favorite. It’s both easy, yet very challenging.

However, dabbling in drama opened my eyes to portraying the truth in all characters.

Finding the comedy in the drama.

And the drama in the comedy.

As in life….it is all blended together!

  1. i totally agree with humor being more difficult than drama. i'm not too familiar with theater other than from what you had been telling us. but the very idea applied to me in real life. it's easy creating drama in life, yet difficult when you try to humor just anyone. or worse, some jokes might even turned out cold! now that's a gigantic ouch.

  2. Hi Ronnie,

Its nice to be reading you! I hope that you are not sweating buckets in Philly( we were yesterday and it is worse today). Grin & try to muddle on...

To be honest with you, the only "on-stage" experience that I had was in Mr B's drama class in HS. I don't have your stage experience!

So, I'll talk from what I feel, being able to make people laugh is very hard as well as pretending to be hysterically and madly laughing. Because laughter is a spontaneous act!

Though I think that if we set ourselves in the right mood, playing drama is another matter. It is always easy to find the saddest, the worst memory and work in that state of mind.

The actors that always left me in awe were the ones who played the bad guys and gals. I am convinced that playing bad person is more complex and challenging than a goody two shoes role.
I know that you have what it takes; you played the evil Step Mom once! Just find the Joan in you and let it out, screaming, darling!!

Big hugs to ya, kiddo xoxo

  3. I so agree with you on this. I am definitely NOT an actor although I feel we all "act" in certain situations. I agree that acting would need to be inborn in someone and you can tell when someone isn't innate to it. And comedy is SO much harder. Try making someone laugh who doesn't want to. NOT that easy. I would so love to watch you act in something some day!

P.S.... I LOVE making people laugh but not cry...lol

  4. Good morning, Ron. I do like the term organic actor, it makes me think of fresh and natural acting. I once heard that it's easier to cry than laugh and I didn't believe it so thanks for the explanation. Yes, I can definitely see you in comedy roles and laughing fit to bust... me, that is. I can't act to save my life but I'm pretty good with ad lib when making a speech. Hope you have a stupendous week.

  5. "I let my intuition lead the way." Hey, Ron--I think this is not just a great approach to acting, but to life in general. Too often we wrestle with issues and talk them to death when we'd be better off just jumping into the pool! Thanks for the great advice and take care.

" i'm not too familiar with theater other than from what you had been telling us."

Theater and film are very different mediums. As much as I love watching film, from an actors standpoint, I prefer acting onstage. It's truly the actors medium. It's scary and exciting at the same time!

" but the very idea applied to me in real life. it's easy creating drama in life, yet difficult when you try to humor just anyone."

Exactly! And that's also the point I was trying to convey with this with post. Art imitates life. And life imitates art.

Very good for picking up on that, Levian!

Always great to see you, my friend. Thanks a bunch for stopping by.

    Have a great week!

  8. Hey there Barbara~

"I hope that you are not sweating buckets in Philly( we were yesterday and it is worse today). Grin & try to muddle on..."

HA! Yes, as know...this is NOT my time of year! Although, it hasn't been too bad this past week. Yet, I heard we're getting HOT, HOT this coming weekend - UGH!

"being able to make people laugh is very hard as well as pretending to be hysterically and madly laughing. Because laughter is a spontaneous act!"

" playing drama is another matter. It is always easy to find the saddest, the worst memory and work in that state of mind."

    Bingo! You're exactly correct!

And what's ironic, is that I aways thought drama would be more difficult.

"The actors that always left me in awe were the ones who played the bad guys and gals. I am convinced that playing bad person is more complex and challenging than a goody two shoes role."

My favorite roles have been the ones where I was the bad guy. And for the reason you shared - complex and challenging. And also, believe it or not, FUN!

"I know that you have what it takes; you played the evil Step Mom once! Just find the Joan in you and let it out, screaming, darling!!"

    NO WIRE HANGERS, EVER!!!!!

    You are sooooooooooo right!

"I agree that acting would need to be inborn in someone and you can tell when someone isn't innate to it."

I do think that someone can "develope" and "enhance" their acting talent, however the "inborn natural talent" needs to be there first.

    Like with any art form.

"P.S.... I LOVE making people laugh but not cry...lol"

HA! And you DO make me laugh, my friend....you do!

  10. Hellooooooooooooo Valerie~

"I do like the term organic actor, it makes me think of fresh and natural acting."

HA! Yes, like a fresh 'organic' fruit salad - Bwhahahaahahhhahahahaahaha!

Actually, your thought is exactly correct. An organic actor is an actor who acts without any technique. They just do it by intuition and feel. Natural.

"I once heard that it's easier to cry than laugh and I didn't believe it so thanks for the explanation."

Yes, that's true. And I didn't believe it either until I tried my hand at drama. For me, it seemed easier than comedy. Comedy takes a tremendous amount of energy.

" I can't act to save my life but I'm pretty good with ad lib when making a speech."

That's WONDERFUL, because I'm terrible at ad-libbing. I get very flustered. I'm also not very good at speeches. Perhaps you can teach me one day!

As always, it's a delight to read your comments, dear lady. Thanks so much for stopping by.

  14. Hi Lady Dianne~

"I have always felt that comedy was under appreciated by the Hollywood establishment - i.e., the Oscars"

You said it! Very rarely will you see an actor be nominated and win for a comedy. That's why I was so surprised and HAPPY when Cher won her Oscar for 'Moonstruck' that year. Which is odd, because I think most people thought she should have won for her wonderful performance in 'Mask.'

Personally, I think she should have won for both.

" which reminds me, she is my very best audience for both drama and comedy. she adores my antics and funny voices and elaborate stage sets and she often plays right in."

    Aw....god love her!!!!!

  17. ...I love comedy. I don't mind drama on the big screen, once in awhile, but I just feel that life is naturally filled with so much drama that comedy has become a necessity to living a good life. Laughter, it's a good thing. :o)

...I could so see you in a comedy of some sort, you would be a natural. Heck, you light up our days here on the world wide web! lol... :o)

..."Acting is a gift." - I so agree! I think it's in your DNA or something...God given. And I agree too about timing. It's like watching a stand up comedian who has good material but his/her timing is all off...it makes you wanna wince.

...And I don't recall Bette Davis ever laughing, it always seemed if she did chuckle it had a sarcastic overtone of some kind, or she had that in-your-face, "HA!"... I love Bette Davis, "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charolette" is one of my all time fav' movies. :o)

...Have a wonderful day my dear!

    I soooooooooooooooooo agree with you!

And I especially enjoy the comedies that are mixed with some drama too. I just watched 'The Bucket List' this weekend and it was wonderful, because it had it all! One minute I was laughing, the next I was crying. I love movies like that. And talk a great comedic actor - Jack Nicholson - love him!

"I think it's in your DNA or something...God given. And I agree too about timing. It's like watching a stand up comedian who has good material but his/her timing is all off...it makes you wanna wince."

Ditto! I think hardest kind of comedy is stand up. I so admire people who can do it.

"And I don't recall Bette Davis ever laughing, it always seemed if she did chuckle it had a sarcastic overtone of some kind, or she had that in-your-face, "HA!"..."

Yes! Yes! Yes! That's right, it was more of a HA! Like in 'All About Eve.'

Ooooo...yes, Hush, Hush, Sweet Charolette! GREAT film. She a Olivia de Havilland were faaaaaaaabulous!!!

One being, to find the humor in life.

You bring up a good point. I was very impressed when Robin Williams took on some meatier, dramatic roles in "Insomnia" and "One Hour Photo." He even won his only Oscar for "Good Will Hunting." Then there's DeNiro, who just isn't very funny in his "Meet The Fockers" roles.

  28. "I have found that most comedic actors can easily shift into drama, yet not all dramatic actors can make the shift into comedy."

Very true! This goes for actors such as Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell. But when I see Robert DeNiro play the straight man in a comedy you know he knows what he's doing! :-)

As for being "born with it", I'd have to agree with you as well. The few times I've been on camera or on stage I was clumsy and ham-fisted. There's no way I could ever be an actor, even if taught proper technique!

And what's really something, is that I actually prefer Robin Williams in his more dramatic roles than his comedy. He's brilliant in both, however I seem to enjoy him more as a serious actor.

He's got all these wonderful layers!

The thing about comedy is that if it's done correctly, it DOES look easier.

I think many people believe that drama is more challenging because of the emotion involved.

But if you think about it, it's easier to feel emotional than funny.

We have a lot of comedy moments in our soaps and even without a live audience timing is still the key to excellent comedy.

I believe that most serious dramas should include moments that make you smile or laugh. Mo and I are always laughing at the TV - even if it isn't intended as a comedy moment. We often see humour in someone's expression or something in the scene background :)
