Living in this city for 10 years, I’ve seen a lot of crime.

And by a lot, I mean excessive.

I’ve witnessed people come into my store and literally grab four fragrance gift sets off the counter and then run out the door. And this happens anywhere from 2-4 times a day.

Some of these people are caught by security, but MANY get away free and clear.

I could tell you a lot about the crime I’ve witnessed, but I would like to share a particular story concerning a crime I saw earlier this week, that will BLOW you away.

First, allow me to share with you that Philadelphia is one of the most crime-ridden and violent cities I have ever lived in, however that’s not something most Philadelphians care to admit. Philadelphia is a very angry, paranoid, and highly segregated city. And each segregated area believes that Philadelphia belongs to them, and THEM only. Philadelphia doesn't know how to coexist under one roof and prosper as a unit. And yet, as a visitor, when you look at how beautiful and charming this city is you wouldn‘t think it. That’s because all the anger, paranoia and segregation is hidden underneath. But trust me, not only was I born here, I currently live in Philadelphia, therefore I SEE what goes on behind the image of The City of Brotherly Love. The crime and violence in this city has nothing to do with the economy and people desperate for food because those are not the one’s who are stealing. It has to do with the people who have always been angry at life because they fear growth and evolution - they fear a change in consciousness. And they steal and act violent because they somehow think they're entitled because of their unhappiness at life.

Allow me to interject here, that I applaud the police force of Philadelphia because they have a lot to deal with. And they’re also the nicest and most helpful police force ever. So, thank you Philadelphia Police Force!

Tuesday, I witnessed an attempted robbery.

I was walking down Walnut Street close to the corner of Broad Street, when I suddenly heard a woman’s voice scream, “STOP THAT MAN! STOP THAT MAN! HE JUST STOLE MY IPHONE!”

And as I focused on what was going on about 25 feet in front of me, I saw the woman who was probably about 70 years old RUNNING after this man. Yes, RUNNING!

All pandemonium broke loose. People on the street and sidewalks were trying to trip the thief in an attempt to stop him, but he kept getting way. The next thing I saw was the thief running down a subway entrance, and this 70-year old woman running down after him!

As I hurried closer to Broad Street, I saw the thief running UP the subway stairs on the opposite side of the street. Which means he ran underground, assuming he was going to get away by exiting on the other side.

Well…it just so happens there were policemen patrolling underground who must of seen this thief running so they ran after him. And all the while this 70-year old woman was running too, screaming, “STOP THAT MAN! STOP THAT MAN! HE STOLE MY IPHONE!”

As I crossed the street, I saw one of the policemen grab this guy and throw him face down onto the sidewalk. The guy resisted by trying to get up….when all of sudden the policeman WHIPPED out his gun and pointed it at him with BOTH hands, yelling, “STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE!”

Now, here’s the greatest ending…..

This 70-year old woman, reached down into the thief’s hand and grabbed her iPhone, holding it high in the sky, exclaiming, “YES!….I GOT IT BACK…I GOT IT BACK….THANK YOU, POLICEMAN!”

OMG…you should have heard me! I was clapping and cheering, “YOU GO, GIRL!!!!!!”

Here are some photographs I got while the arrest was taking place. I apologize that some of these images are blurring, but I wasn’t even focusing. I just kept snapping.

You GO, girl!

Yup.....crime doesn’t always pay, does it?

Have a glorious weekend everyone!

  1. Hi Ron,
Holy cow! You were at the right place at the right time! Eyewitness news :)
    Great shots!
And yes, way to go, lady!

This city is like "beauty and the beast".

On a more personal side, three generations of my family lived in Kensington up until about the 40's. Of course, that part of town went to the dogs. These burbs are known for all the drug & prostitution problems.

You won't believe it; we went to Kensington on our first trip in 1992! We went to the church where my grandparents were married. The neighborhood was run down and dirty. Since this time, the church has been closed(like many others in Phila).
I think that it is a never ending battle. The police dep't has it's work cut out for it, that's for sure!

    Great post my dear!

    Have a great weekend xox
P.S. I have been hearing how freaking hot it is on the East Coast! Stay cool!

  3. CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! I can't believe you got pictures of this! What a creepo that guy is. I just don't understand people like that. Must be a drug addict or something.

I've been thinking about you all week. They keep showing how hot and muggy it is in Philadelphia. Stay cool, my friend!

    BTW, awesome camera!

  4. WOW well done that woman for chasing the thief and eventually getting her phone back! I was on the edge of my seat all through your description of what was happening Ron and breathed a sigh of relief when the policeman nabbed the thief!

  5. I am amazed by your description of Philly. It looks so nice and clean living. Who would have thought there would be a lot of crime there. The old (?) lady did well to run after the thief, well done her. I'm glad she won the day. One day, when I worked for our police force, I'd popped out for lunch and heard a rumpus ahead of me. There was a man running towards me with a couple of detectives in hot pursuit. I knew them. One shouted 'stop that man' so I did. All I did, honest, was put a foot out to trip him up. Well you know me, in for a penny in for a pound. Anyway it worked. Have a brillint and troublefree weekend.

  7. Good job on "capturing" and relaying the scene! Ironic isn't it that this place is called the city of brotherly love?!

  8. First of all, that mature lady looks more in shape than the thief and I bet she COULD have caught him eventually...but glad she didn't cause they might have gotten into a struggle and messed up her perfect pony and broken her designer shades.

Second, thiefs should know enough to steal from women in heels, not sneakers. Geeze!

So, why did he feel compelled to swipe a phone that has a traceable serial number and that no service provider is allowed to reset? My theory is that he was walking by the electronics store and saw a summer special on QVC "In the Kitchen with David." The day was HOT and at almost heat-stroke temperature, idea of his own personal slurpy machine possessed him like the devil. In his desparate panic to place the order with his illigitamte son's credit card number, he GRABBED the closest phone and RAN, frantically dialing the number before he could be caught. Does QVC deliver to County lock up?

  9. Hey there Barbara~

"Holy cow! You were at the right place at the right time! Eyewitness news :)"

HA! You should have seen me desperately trying to grab my camera, but I kept fumbling as I was running closer to the scene of arrest.

I was soooooooooo happy and excited to see her get her phone back!! She was a toughy, and no one was going to mess with her!

"On a more personal side, three generations of my family lived in Kensington up until about the 40's. Of course, that part of town went to the dogs. These burbs are known for all the drug & prostitution problems."

Yes, I know that area very well. In fact, one of the women I work with use to live there and she says the same thing....that part of town went to the dogs. Another area that went to the dogs is Germantown (where my stepmother was born). She visited the last time she was here and got so depressed.

"I think that it is a never ending battle. The police dep't has it's work cut out for it, that's for sure!"

    Yup...that's for sure!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend! Yes...OMG...it's been soooo hot these past few days. Today, they said it's suppose to get to 110 degrees with the humidity index. Yesterday, I went out to run a few errands and I was sweating like pig. I can't WAIT until Fall.

    Have a great weekend, Barb!

    X to you and D!

  11. Wow, Ron, great post! You were right on the spot--you should be a crime reporter! And look at that size of that loser!! What a bum! You also make some great observations about humanity: "The crime and violence in this city has nothing to do with the economy and people desperate for food because those are not the one’s who are stealing. It has to do with the people who have always been angry at life because they fear growth and evolution - they fear a change in consciousness. And they steal and act violent because they somehow think they're entitled because of their unhappiness at life."

  14. Wow! Great photos! This is another reason that us bloggers should never be without a camera. This leads me to what I witnessed once.

I was in a store and the cashiers were emptying their takings into bags for security to take them out back to the safe. (I don't think they do this any more) I was at the checkout as this was taking place. Suddenly a young man rushed forward, snatched the bag of cash and ran for the exit. An elderly woman in the next queue had a walking aid and she promptly stuck it out in front of the man, tripping him up. He landed flat on the floor with security on top of him before he knew what had happened! The elderly lady smiled to loud applause from all the shoppers!

Often the elderly are far braver than young people, or maybe it's that they get far more indignant at these things. I can just here them saying to themselves "Who does that young whippersnapper think he is?"

  16. Good Morning Valerie~

"I am amazed by your description of Philly. It looks so nice and clean living. Who would have thought there would be a lot of crime there."

Philly is very extreme. It has gorgeous parts and then parts that look like a war zone. I try and show all the nice areas of Philly with my photography, but there are also areas that are terrible. The energy in this city is very bi-polar - one extreme to the next. That's why when most people visit and they see how pretty and charming parts of Center City are, they're shocked to here of the crime and violence. But trust me, it's here.

"The old (?) lady did well to run after the thief, well done her. I'm glad she won the day."

HA! I don't think someone half her age could have done what she did. She was DETERMINED and I so admire that!

"There was a man running towards me with a couple of detectives in hot pursuit. I knew them. One shouted 'stop that man' so I did. All I did, honest, was put a foot out to trip him up. Well you know me, in for a penny in for a pound. Anyway it worked."

  17. Philly, like you said, is beautiful and charming... absolutely! We love taking day trips across the bridge to see all the many things it has to offer. But listen to any one of the several news broadcasts on each day (although I really try to not do that too often) and you'de know there are definitely problems there.
However, it's certainly good to know that the police force is out and ready to roll. And the old gal herself was right there in the mix of it all! Way to go, honey, I'm diggin' your big dark shades too. :)
Hey Ron, stay cool today... heat index to climb up towards 115. Do people still get in the fountain at Logan Square??

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!! She was one TOUGH cookie and NO ONE was going to mess with her!!! She ROCKED! Yes, and thank god the police were around. Philly pretty much has the city well-patrolled, especially in the underground where A LOT of crime goes on. I could tell you stories that would curl your hair about the acts of crime and violence that often occurs here.

"Look at you, Ron - going all guerilla photojournalist on us! LOL"

"But listen to any one of the several news broadcasts on each day (although I really try to not do that too often) and you'd know there are definitely problems there."

You said it! And thank you for sharing that because there definiately is MAJOR problems here. Problems that no one wants to face. And it's ironic you mentioned that because even though I don't watch the news, my mother does. And she's ALWAYS calling me up saying, "I wish you would move out of Philly because I keep seeing in the news all the crime and violence going on."

Yet, it doesn't frighten me, it just pisses me off.

"However, it's certainly good to know that the police force is out and ready to roll."

Philly cops are truly some of the nicest and most helpful police force I've ever encountered. They're very approachable if you need help or directions, or have any problems. I'm forever thanking them when they come into the store to shop.

"And the old gal herself was right there in the mix of it all! Way to go, honey, I'm diggin' your big dark shades too. :)"

OMG...I know, I'm DREADING it! I feel like I'm going to FAINT on the streets because the humidity is so high, I can't breathe. Yes, I think people still do get in the fountain at Logan Square and I might just do that today - HA!

I know, that's what I said. Yet, I spoke to someone at work about this and apparently these people who are nabbing iPhones have a way of de-programing the phone, and then they resell them. Who knew?

Thanks for noticing the new cartoon, I just put him up there last night. I made him at a site called Toondoo, which I discovered from another blogger friend of mine. You can make all sorts of things for FREE. I added the little clap board myself from a graphic I had on my computer.

Yes, we do have a lot of crime and it's getting worse all the time. Some of it may have to do with unemployment, but MUCH of it has to do with people who simply think they're entitled. This city has a very strange attitude. Friendly to its tourists, yet not to its own residents.

  41. Howdy Mark~

    Thanks, bud.

Right after this happened I ran home immediately and typed it out, while still fresh in my memory. It's odd though, because nothing was mentioned in newspaper!?!

Isn't the lady awesome? I never found out who she was or what her name is, but ADORE her!

"She probably ate a cheesesteak for lunch, which fueled her up and gave her energy. (You sure you don't want to try one, Ron? You might just turn into Superman if you do!)."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! Yeah...those Philly cheese steak sandwiches are MAGIC!

Thanks for stopping by, Mark! Always fab to see ya! Have a grrrrrrrreat weekend!

Can't WAIT to read about your paranormal thingie you've got going today on your future post!

  43. Hey Lady Dianne~

    "Holy Crap!

She looks incredibly fit for 70"

    I know....isn't she freakin' AMAZING????

"I love the last shot where you can see the officer is smiling at her."

OMG, Dianne....I CANNOT believe you just said that because I feel the same way about that shot. The officer's expression on his face and the gentle way his hand is on her shoulder, says so much. Such a beautiful and caring gesture, isn't it? That's what I mean about the Philly police force, they're so nice and caring.

    "the thief looks like trash"

    Yeah...BIG time!

"you're so right about the anger coming out of frustration at a sense of entitlement not being met
I see it here as well."

    Isn't it something?

"stay as cool as you can kiddo
later on I'm thinking of setting my head on fire just to cool off a bit"

Bwhahahahahahahahahahaha! Holy shit, this heat is soooooooooo bad, isn't it? It actually makes me feel sick to stomach. Oh boy...I can't WAIT for Fall!

  46. that's pretty darned gutsy of that woman - GOOD FOR HER! She chose not to be a victim but to choose empowerment. Good for her! That story rocks. And Ron, can I just say that you are a true blogger? The first thing you think to do is pull out your camera and get first-on-the-scene photographs. Content rules baby! I love you man. xoxo Diane (& Cristybella)

  50. I never imagined that crime could get so bad. What's the SOP for when people steal from you? Do you have a direct line to security, or do you shout out a code like, "WE HAVE A 1-ADAM 12! WE HAVE A 1-ADAM 12!"?

Man, I hope you aren't expected to run down and tackle these thieves!

  51. Howdy Herman~

"I never imagined that crime could get so bad."

I know, isn't it the pits? And it's becoming that way in a lot of places. The thing about Philly is that it "appears" to be not this way. However, after you live here for awhile you begin to see it and understand WHY it's happening.

"Do you have a direct line to security, or do you shout out a code like, "WE HAVE A 1-ADAM 12! WE HAVE A 1-ADAM 12!"?"

    HAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Hilarious!

"Man, I hope you aren't expected to run down and tackle these thieves!"

No, not unless you're someone like this 70-year old woman!!

Actually, the cops here are pretty scattered throughout Center City so if anything should occur, they're there PRONTO!

Thanks for stopping by, buddy! Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

X to you and the family!

  52. *sigh* Sad state of affairs when we feel 'entitled' to rip off a senior. Seriously.
    Sad state of affairs, period.

Don't get me wrong--wonderful ending to the circumstances and awesome photos. The gal looks rather chuffed with herself. And he ain't looking so 'cool' and 'all that and a bag of chips' with his new bracelets. It's just sad when we justify actions and act on that sense of entitlement. "If you had my life blah blah blah....." *sigh*
I do agree with the: It has to do with the people who have always been angry at life because they fear growth and evolution - they fear a change in consciousness. And they steal and act violent because they somehow think they're entitled because of their unhappiness at life.

I didn't 'get it' for a long time either--and I was just as guilty for acting on that sense of 'entitlement'. Now granted, I didn't steal some senior's iPhone. I had more respect and more common sense, dontchaknow! I stole a police car and used it for furnishing my apartment, don'tchaknow.
    Disco lights and all!

    k.
I'll go to the naughty corner.
BUT I DID PAY FOR THE CAR! Eventually.....literally AND figuratively....
Do ya KNOW how expensive those things are?!

  53. Hiya Mel~

Yes, I agree....wonderful ending to the circumstances but it's still a SAD state of affairs, period.

" And he ain't looking so 'cool' and 'all that and a bag of chips' with his new bracelets."

HA! You said it, Mel! Love it.....'his new bracelets!!!'

"If you had my life blah blah blah....." *sigh*"

Yeah, that's the thing that totally pisses me off, because I hear that almost every single time the cops are dragging these thiefs out of our store. BOO. HOO.

"I'll go to the naughty corner.
BUT I DID PAY FOR THE CAR! Eventually.....literally AND figuratively....
Do ya KNOW how expensive those things are?!

<-- *hanging head and going to the naughty corner*"

HAHAHHHAAHHAAHAHHAAHA! Mel, that cracked me up!

Yup, I too (when I was a kid) stole something from a store. However, I felt so guilty I buried it in the back yard so I wouldn't have to look at it!!!

    *hanging head*

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and feelings. Muchly appreciated and enjoyed. Have a great week!
