Post updates by email:

I know in the past, I’ve shared some beautiful photographs of Philadelphia with its stunning architecture and historical ambiance.

However, today I would like to share some of its not-so-stunning ambiance.

Like with most cities, there is both beauty and the beast.

With my camera in hand, I spent 4th of July afternoon walking around the city and enjoying the fact that I had the place to myself, because most urban dwellers were at the Jersey shore tanning their epidermis in the summer sun.

No thank you. I’ve done enough of the sun while living in Florida for 20 years.

I now cheat, and use self-tanner during the summer months. Which kinda makes me look like George Hamilton.

As most of my longtime blogging friends know, I’ve gone from worshipping the sun to treating it as if I were Dracula; cautiously walking on the shady side of the street, as not to turn into a pile of ash.

One of the truly horrific things about city life is that once the summer temperatures reach into the 90’s, the urban air becomes embellished with the pungent aroma of dumpster trash.

I mean think about it….imagine a restaurant dumpster filled with food waste; being magnified by HEAT.

OMG….I hate to be graphic, but it smells like TEN hippopotamus's vomited.

Therefore, as you’re walking pass a garbage dumpster in an alleyway, you literally have to hold your breath in fear you’ll pass out.

In fact, as I’m writing this I can vividly recall exactly what it smells like.

Overall, Philadelphia is a clean city. Yet, it does have area’s that look as though someone dropped a bomb on it. The strange thing about Philly is that on one street it may be gorgeous, however on the next street it appears like a war zone.

But hey….that’s city life. You’ve got the extreme good, bad and ugly.

And as much as I don’t relish looking at it and smelling the bad and the ugly, city living keeps me in touch with how extreme and raw life can be at times. There is no escaping it when you live in a city, because everything is right in your face 24/7.

I know this may sound strange, but there is a part of me that actually likes it.

I can be extreme in areas of my personality, so that’s probably why I feel comfortable as a city dweller.

Here are a few images of some dumpsters and a trash can that I photographed on Monday.

Oh….please feel free to scratch and sniff over each photo, because I had them digitally engraved with the scent of hippopotamus vomit.

This dumpster was perhaps the worst smelling one out of the bunch. I wanted to take out a clothespin and clip it to the end of my nose.

This dumpster was behind a Chinese restaurant. Imagine how pork fried rice smells after being fermented in 95 degree heat. Gag me with a chopstick!

This dumpster I discovered behind another restaurant, and I have to say….it was the lesser of the three evils. Yet, it did stink.

This trash can didn’t smell bad, but it looked disgusting. Notice the pigeons on the right, eyeing that Wendy’s bag on the ground. Pigeons will eat anything. Even half-eaten PICKLES!

I would like to leave you with one of Bette Davis’ famous lines from the movie, Beyond the Forest.

Take it away, Bet….

Have an awesome weekend everyone!

  1. I didn't realise hippo vomit smelled like trash. I live and learn. Regular collections here remove the foul smells but there are areas that produce too much rubbish in between. It pays to keep your distance on a hot day, when we have one. As for the pigeons, you're right they do eat anything in sight. I have a waging war with those mucky birds ... as well as the squirrels.
Dear old Bette got it in one, bless her! Hope you have a great weekend.

  2. Hi Ronnie,

I agree with you; a city is the good, bad and ugly all rolled up in one.
And trash is definately in the ugly category even if it is a part of life. Summer seems to aggravate the problem!!

Looking at those "gems" that you used to illustrate all this,a question comes to mind:
"How much does Phila recycle?" And do you recycle?

Here in the Paris burbs, we have been using 3 trash cans in our town since about 1998; one for non recyclables, another glass and the last one for recyclable products(plastic bottles, aluminium, newspapers, cardboard, etc).

Having to actively recycle has changed my views on all the waste that we create at home. I know that my role as a buyer can have an impact on a lot of things. Each person can do his part for the planet.

Once again, you are showing us that you know your b&w classics!I didn't know that Bette Davis scene at all!

Happy weekend to ya, buddy xox

  3. Happy Friday, Ron!

This is a great post! I can't remember ever seeing a post about city dumpters, and may never again.

I'm sure they look and smell digusting in person, but oddly there is a certain artistic aesthetic to your pictrues. See there, Ron... You're soo fabulous you can even make garbage look good!

    Have a wonderful weekend, hon.

  4. I also have this love-hate relationship with urban decay... in a way, I adore defining myself as a true urban chick, and on the other hand sometimes it just is... right there in your very face!

But I still prefer to be here, in the vomit odor, than out on the fields. My choice... my crazy love.

  5. How often are those dumpsters and trashcans emptied Ron? I can imagine the smell but I suppose they have to put their trash somewhere and it's better than just dumping it on the street eh?

  6. Good Morning Valerie!

"I didn't realise hippo vomit smelled like trash. I live and learn."

Bwhahahahahahahahahahahha! Well, I couldn't think of anything other than hippo vomit to express exactly what it smells like. However, I've never smelled hippo vomit, it's just an exaggerated estimation - HA!

"Regular collections here remove the foul smells but there are areas that produce too much rubbish in between."

Yes, we have that here too. There are regular collection days, yet I think I caught these dumpsters in between because of the holiday.

"As for the pigeons, you're right they do eat anything in sight. I have a waging war with those mucky birds ...as well as the squirrels "

OMG...aren't they VULTURES???? Pigeons I'm not fond of, however the squirrels I LOVE. The worst thing about the pigeons is that they FLY in your face while walking through the city parks!!!!

Isn't Bette the BOMB? I found this clip on You Tube. It was PERFECT for this post - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a glorious weekend!

  7. I haven't lived in the city (London) for so long now, that I can't remember ever seeing a dumpster outside a restaurant. I think they were mostly hidden out the back. However, I do remember when the trash people (we called them dustmen) went on strike and the trash filled the streets all over the place. Now that was some serious aroma, and a danger to health!

"a city is the good, bad and ugly all rolled up in one.
And trash is definately in the ugly category even if it is a part of life. Summer seems to aggravate the problem!!"

OMG...you said it! Durning the winter months you can't even smell it, but during the summer?

    P U

"How much does Phila recycle?" And do you recycle?"

Yes, Philly does recycle. In fact, the apartment building I live in has recycling bins in the basement to sort out the various
    products (plastic, cardboard, etc.).

"Having to actively recycle has changed my views on all the waste that we create at home. I know that my role as a buyer can have an impact on a lot of things. Each person can do his part for the planet."

Amen! And I really do need to get more recycling conscious, so thank you for the important reminder!

Yes, this is s scene from one of Bette's eariler films with Joseph Cotton. The line from the movie is a CLASSIC. All the drag queens use it - HA!

Always FAB to see ya, my friend. Thanks a bunch for stopping by!

    Happy weekend!

Yup...that's exactly what I meant when I said that there is a part of the bad and the ugly that I like! You're right...there is a certain artistic aesthetic to it. That's why I love city life. It's rawly beautiful!

*nodding my head up and down*

Yup.....I think people who are creative can truly see and appreciate the artist beauty in each extreme. It's like knowing the 'darkness' because of knowing the 'lightness.'

"But I still prefer to be here, in the vomit odor, than out on the fields."

  11. Good Morning Akelamalu~

"How often are those dumpsters and trashcans emptied Ron?"

They empty them twice a week, however because of the holiday on Monday, I think the trash looked a bit more extreme. Yet, even on regular collections days it can look pretty bad and smelly.

I think it's the summer heat that makes it even more less appealing because it MAGNIFIES it.

Thank you for stopping by, m'dear. Have a wonderful weekend!

  12. Hey there Babs~

" I think they were mostly hidden out the back."

Yes, that's pretty much the way it is here in Philly. However, some of the dumpster are right out along the sidewalk - ugh!

"I do remember when the trash people (we called them dustmen) went on strike and the trash filled the streets all over the place. Now that was some serious aroma, and a danger to health!"

OMG....yes, I remember that happening here too! The aroma was waaaaaaaaaay out of control. I think they purposely strike during the summer months because they know it's the worse time to do it. Thus, they end up getting what they want - HA! I've also experienced trash strikes while living in NYC. OMG...it was horrendous!

Thank you for stopping by, Babs! Have a great weekend, my friend!

  13. Nice investigative reporting, Ron. The city's sanitation department should take note. Maybe all the dumpsters should have a Bette Davis alarm--every time they overflow, we should hear a recording of "What a dump!" over and over.

  19. Hi Ron,

Sorry I haven't around lately, but we just got back from our vacation. We had a great time.

First, love your new template. I liked the other one too, but I REALLY like the colors in this one.

This post made me laugh and laugh. I've never lived in a city, but I've visited enough to know that the odor durning the hot summer months is just awful. And hippopotamus vomit is a perfect description :0

    Enjoy your weekend.

Thank you. Glad you like the new look. It took me forever to decide on a new design, but I'm happy I chose this one. It's got more color, but not too much.

I LOVE living in a city, but summertime can be very challenging. The heat makes everything smell so much worse.

Thanks for stopping. Have a super-duper weekend!

  21. the first one looks kinda pretty since the wall is blue

I know the smell you speak of
when I was in grammar school in Brooklyn we had to walk past the service side of a giant catering hall
Monday was especially awful since the remnants of a weekend worth of weddings and bar mitvahs was piled high
even the ground was slimy with a greenish ooze that would get on our shoes

    Bette is so cool
love the way she saunters and dismisses the place with 3 words
    total class

  22. Well, at least they attempt to use dumpsters! When we were walking back from the Broadway shows in NYC, the trash bags were on the sidewalks and we were having to play dodge em!

And you know how you were holding your breath to take the photos? I do that on a continual basis when people walk by me that I suspect stink or overdo the parfumes! Hahaha!

You know, every city has their dark side and I've found that to be in almost every place you go. Even charming little historic country towns with their quaint main street and cobblestone walkways, they even have their part of town that they would rather people not see. Sadly, it's everywhere. *sigh* :o\

  47. i had never smelled a hippo's vomit before, but i didn't need to imagine how any vomit could come out smelling good! i guess the worst dumpsters are usually the food related ones. even after one short overnight we will be struggling to run away from it! absolutely torturous!
