Post updates by email:

Well, since I started this week’s posts with a somewhat eerie and spooky theme, I thought I’d end with one as well.

BOO!

I don’t know whether it’s because Halloween is just around the corner, but I’m really getting into the SPOOKY mood.

You see, I adore being scared. Outside of documentaries, scary/thriller films are my favorite genre.

Now I don’t like overly violent or gory, scary films, I like the ones that play with my psyche; causing fingernail biting and edge-of-my-seat suspense.

A few weeks ago I watched one of my much loved thrillers, The Silence Of The Lambs.

And for those of you who have already seen it, is this not one of the BEST scary movies of all-time? Not only is it scary, but it’s also laced with brilliant sarcastic humor, due to the stellar performance of Anthony Hopkins. He layers the character of former psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer, Hannibal Lecter, with touches of wit, intelligence and affability so that you actually end up enjoying him and cheering him on as he plans his escape.

Hopkins creates a character that scares the shit out of you, but also makes you want to invite him to Happy Hour at your favorite pub on Friday nights because you just know he would make a great conversationalist.

Especially after a couple glasses of Chianti.

He portrays Hannibal as a polite and gentlemanly serial killer. And it’s funny because his character doesn’t even have that much screen time, but you find yourself thinking about him; eagerly anticipating his return.

Personally, I love anything that Anthony Hopkins does, but this movie is close to the top of my list.

The Silence Of The Lambs is also a classic thriller due to Jodie Foster who portrays, Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee seeking the advice of Lecter to apprehend another serial killer, known only as Buffalo Bill.

The amazing thing about Foster’s performance is that she skillfully internalizes Clarice’s terrifying fear, so that the audience feels it for her. Jodie Foster has an amazing talent for showing emotion through the deep recesses of her eyes. It’s so subtle, yet very POWERFUL.

She's a brilliant actress as well.

I love her portrayal of Clarice because she gives the character both tremendous strength and vulnerability. You can tell she’s not a lady to be messed with, yet she sustains her softness.

The most bone-chilling scene in the movie is when Clarice discovers serial killer, Buffalo Bill, in his home and pulls her gun on him, but he leads her on a wild goose chase into the basement, where he has his next victim imprisoned in a well. Buffalo Bill dons night vision goggles and turns out the lights, leaving Clarice to feel around in the dark. There is extreme suspense and tension in this scene, since we can see Foster feeling her way through the room, knowing Buffalo Bill is right near her, yet she's unable to see anything.  Occasionally, he reaches out with his hand as if he’s going to grab her.

Even now, as I write this….I get CHILLS up and down my spine.

If you’ve never seen The Silence Of The Lambs and enjoy a good thriller, you’ve got to watch it. And if you have seen it, it might be time for you watched it again.

Save it for Halloween night.

I leave you now with one of my favorite lines in the film, delivered by one of the greatest actors in the U.S. and UK.

Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, as Hannibal Lecter…..

Have a faaaaaaaabulous weekend everyone!

  1. Oooooooooh, scary.

I haven't seen this film, Ron, nor do I think I want to. As a matter of fact, every time I see Anthony Hopkins I think how weird he looks, as if he's acting the part of creepy characters in real life.

Halloween ... is it really that close?

It's Fab Friday again... hope you have a great weekend.

  2. Hey, Ron, this is a tremendous film. I hate the gory movies as well; I prefer being scared rather than being sickened and this movie really delivers the goods. Hopkins dominates this movie, but Jodie Foster also makes her presence felt. I especially like how they have to put Lecter in a face mask whenever they take him out of his cell. Such a truly evil character, but he's so polite. Have a great weekend, buddy, and don't dine with strangers!!

  3. Um, no thanks, Ronnie! I will continue to quickly change the channel when that little piece of horror is showing!

  4. Ummmm...... *shudder* I've tried. Honestly. People talk about how good the film is and how intense it is. I got the "intense" in the small bit that I did watch--and had to get the heck out of the room and go on my merry way. LOL Years later I made another attempt--and didn't last much longer than the first time.

    I must be a wimp.....LOL I can't do it!
There's such a creepy crawly sense of evil to the character -- which says a whole lot about the ability of Sir Anthony. At least I hope it's the character ....LOL Must be--I've watched him in other films and didn't exit the room hugging myself and chanting 'NOPE......NOT HAPPENING' over and over again.

I'm no good at that 'evil' stuff--I struggled through Lords of the Ring when Gandolf got drug into the pits by the evil monstery thing....... I left angry, once again chanting 'NOPE....NOT HAPPENING...." and didn't go to the second film because of it. It actually took me a good chunk of time to watch the second film of the series cuz I wasn't going through that a second time! LOL And no, it's not about always having to have a 'happily ever after' ending. I think it's that 'evil' factor. *shrugs* Either that or it's just me tantrumming--which, as you well know, it could be!

    I love Halloween!! (there's a surprise!)
But I don't do evil or gore.

We have happy ghosties and witchies and bats! LOL

And LOTS of candy.....which is way better for Hannibal to consume than people's liver.

    I watched the clip.
    What WAS I thinking?!?!

    *shudder* NOPE.........NOT HAPPENING!!!!!!!!

  5. It gives me chills, too. I'm not a fan of scary movies as they upset me too much but this is one of the ones I've seen. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster both do incredible jobs in the film.

  6. hmm, never seen this movie. of course, your write-up has me curious, but i'm not sure i can make myself watch. i hate the month of october because nothing but spooky stuff is on TV (not that i watch much) but it's even worse in october.

sounds very interesting ron and i would probably have nightmares for days. tell ya what? i'll put this on my "death bed movie" list. i have a list of movies that i will only watch when i'm on my death bed, that way if i'm scared to death, it won't matter much.

    smooches! have a great weekend.

  7. "It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again." Was a creepier line ever uttered in the history of cinema?

Well, except for "Dude...where's my car?" But that was creepier for a different purpose.

SOTL is a great movie and, like you, I think Sir Anthony Hopkins is an amazing actor.

Have a great, not too creepy weekend, Ron!

  11. Hey there Rob~

" I prefer being scared rather than being sickened and this movie really delivers the goods."

Me too. I like suspense thrillers over gory. The thing I love about The Silence of the Lambs is that even though there are some icky scenes, it presents them in a way that is not overly gory or gross.

"Hopkins dominates this movie, but Jodie Foster also makes her presence felt."

I TOTALLY agree! And I think it's great that they both won Oscars for this film because they deserved them.

" I especially like how they have to put Lecter in a face mask whenever they take him out of his cell."

    OMG.....wasn't that scene BEYOND creepy??????

" Such a truly evil character, but he's so polite."

Yes, and that's what made his character even MORE scary.

If you don't enjoy scary films, you might not like this one. But I have to tell ya, it's one of those films that's scary, yes, but it's also an incredibly intelligent scary film; not just a bunch of gory stuff. The movie really makes you think. It also has some really great humor in it.

I've never seen any of the Lords of the Ring movies, so I didn't realize it had evil stuff in it. I thought it was just a KIDS movie.

  15. Ron, what a great review on a great movie! I'm not much for gory movies myself, but Silence of the Lambs was one of the best scary movies ever. I really don't think of it as a horror film, I think of it more of a psychological thriller.

Anthony Hopkins is so tremendous in this film as Hannibal Lecter. And you're right, the scene in the basement with Jodie Foster is so tense, it scared me to death.

Thanks for sharing. I enjoy your movie reviews. Have a wonderful weekend, Ron.

  16. Hola Denise~

"I really don't think of it as a horror film, I think of it more of a psychological thriller."

Yes, I do too. It had some brief graphic stuff, but it wasn't overly gory or gross. It was just enough. I truly think this film was presented intelligently. Johnathan Demme did a great job! And it's funny because he did not want to direct this film at first. I don't anyone knew how well this film would be received.

"the scene in the basement with Jodie Foster is so tense, it scared me to death."

    Chilling!

  17. It's just as you said, Ron, this is one of the BEST scary movies ever! I bet I've seen this film at least 10 times. Both Hopkins and Foster bring so much to the movie through their portrayals of Lecter and Starling.

I love how Hopkins says Fosters name.

    "Hello Claareeece." So spooky!

    ReplyDelete
  18. oh lord ron, i'll be glad when you get focused on santa...i hated this movie and hate being forced into being scared because i am watching a movie ... i even hate trailers on tv and thus, dvr. i know i am ms. toughy but in reality, i am a wuss.

this was based on a true story and that part gets me the most. and do you know how many shrinks i've known over the years? sigh... no thanks!! they ARE capable of truly evil things.. say no more!!

i agree w/ you on one thing...'sir' anthony is one of the best actors of all time. and foster is also but she has turned her sights to directing, a very good move, given hollywoods' love of the 18 yr. old starlet-sickening but true.

give me the likes of foster or streep or lange[well...the face lift? have you seen what she did to her face? or dear meg?] xoxoxo

  19. I cannot stand gory films. The very first film I ever saw that made me feel ill was Bonnie & Clyde. The scene where they were in the car and had been shot up. So much blood and that was tame compared to films now. I do like a good scary film though and this was one of the best! If Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are in a film, it must be good :)

  20. Hiya Matt~

" i even hate trailers on tv and thus, dvr. i know i am ms. toughy but in reality, i am a wuss."

No, you're not a wuss. I totally understand your feelings because MANY people didn't care for this film.

"this was based on a true story and that part gets me the most."

Yes, I did know it was based on a true story, which makes it even MORE creepy and scary, doesn't it?

Isn't Hopkins an amazing actor? There isn't a thing he's ever done that I didn't like. I loved him in The Elephant Man with Ann Bancroft.

"and foster is also but she has turned her sights to directing, a very good move, given hollywoods' love of the 18 yr. old starlet-sickening but true."

I agree, very good move on her part. And considering she's been acting since she was a child, I bet she knows MORE than most directors.

"give me the likes of foster or streep or lange[well...the face lift? have you seen what she did to her face? or dear meg?] "

Amen to ALL the women you just mentioned. And might I add, Sarandon too. I love her! Yes, I did see both Lange's and Foster's face lift. Langes is much more natural than Meg's.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on this post, dear friend.

I sooooooooooooo agree with you, Bonnie and Clyde was tame compared to the films now. Most scary films now are laced with so much violence and unnecessary gore. I think the public is getting immune to the violence because Hollywood just keeps giving them more and more.

"If Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are in a film, it must be good :)"

Aren't they both faaaaaaaabulous? I've never seen a film, with Hopkins especially, that I didn't love. He's so versatile. AMAZING actor. The American audience LOVE him!

  33. Excellent movie...and fantastic write-up! I forgot how creepy this movie was. This is one of those flicks that I'll be upgrading to blu-ray asap. The second movie, Hannibal, wasn't nearly as good. And the third movie, Red Dragon, was a great book but a disappointing movie, although it did have Ralph Fiennes in it, so that's something there.

As for older movies, I picked up Creepshow this weekend. Now *that's* a fun blast from the past! :-)

Oh, that's okay, my Libra friend, we can't always agree on everything, right?

The problem with most scary movies now-a-days is that they contain so much violence and gore that I really can't take watching them myself. I like scary movies if they're suspenseful and psychological thrillers. Not a lot of gore.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, Jay! Hope you're having a swell week!
