The wonderful thing about photography is that the photographer has the freedom to present a photo as he/she sees the image; which includes things like, perspective, composition, and cropping.

You view the image THROUGH the photographer’s eye.

I’m a big nighttime person. And the cool thing about living in a city is that once the sun goes down, the sky becomes a black velvet backdrop for beautiful shades of amber; creating almost a ‘fiery’ glow through which all other city lights project.

Lately, I’ve been experimenting with the settings on my camera instead of using it in auto mode, so that I have more self-control.

As you know, nighttime shots are a challenge because there is such a drastic contrast between light and dark. You don’t always want to use a flash, but at the same time you also need to allow for enough exposure, so that you can capture the drama of nightlight.

Here are some photographs I took over the past two weeks of my favorite time of the day.

Night.

Please enjoy….

A view from my apartment window.

I took this shot on an evening when there was a misty fog rolling in.

An amber glow from the street.

A beautiful mural in a parking lot.

The Westbury Apartments. The entrance way of this building has been used in several films shot in Philadelphia.

The Wilma Theater on Broad Street. Notice the newlywed couple posing for photographs in the middle of the street.

I felt sooooo lucky to get this close-up shot of the wedding photographer taking photos of the newlyweds. They look so romantic, don't they? And I LOVE her dress!

Have a picture perfect Monday!

  1. Hi Ronnie,
This is fabulous!!! I had a taste of one of my fav cities this morning. You did so fine.
And a big round of applause for walking over that shaky bridge that seperates AM from M... I am still shaking and learning myself, just like a Virgo, sometimes not satisfied, sometimes more.

I can suggest reading up on night photography and getting your fill of it as much as possible. Lots of practice...
I LOVE the first one which came out exquistely. Exciting too, to catch a wedding shoot( I love those!).
Well done, hon. I am sure that had fun combing the city streets watching and shooting the instant... Let us come with you the next time we come over to Philly!!

  3. Hi Ron. Wow, I love the view from your apartment window. I would be in element watching all the lights coming on etc. Do you get to see people in windows as well? The street scene is amazing, I like that shot very much, and the wedding ... oh yes, I definitely liked that one. Lovely post, as ever.

I have never used the night-time setting on the camera which is an absolute disgrace. I can only describe it as pure laziness. You put me to shame so I need toremedy that forthwith.

Hope you have a marv Monday, my friend x

  5. Wow, Ron, these photos are fantastic! A few of them make me think of the old film noir movies from the Forties! I'm so glad you broke out of auto mode--that's a good lesson for life as well as photography! Have a picture perfect week, buddy, and thanks for sharing your vision!

  6. Bonjour Barb~

"And a big round of applause for walking over that shaky bridge that seperates AM from M... I am still shaking and learning myself...."

Thank you, my friend. PM photography is SUCH a challenge because of the lighting, isn't it? I decided to break free of auto mode and try out the various settings on my camera (which I've never done before) to see if I could take photos without using the flash (which I did for the photos you see here). The tricky part with long exposure is holding the camera still. I really need to get a tripod.

"I can suggest reading up on night photography and getting your fill of it as much as possible. Lots of practice..."

Yes! That's what I've been doing lately, reading up and practicing. I discovered a series a books by Tom Ang, who shares a wealth of information on digital photography.

I felt so lucky to get those wedding shots. I was walking home from work when I spotted the newlywed couple on the street and whipped out my camera. I took the photos so fast, I'm surprised they came out !?

Thanks for stopping by and for your encouraging words. And yes, the next time you and D are in Philly we'll go out one night and shoot the city!

    Have a great week!

    X to you and D!

  7. Good morning Bijoux~

Isn't the mural lovely? Philly has a TON of them all around the city.

Yes, nighttime in a city is my favorite. NYC is even MORE SO dramatic because it's so massive and full of lights.

Isn't her dress faaaaaabulous? It was kinda chilling that night, so she must have been cold with her shoulders exposed like that.

"Were they in a parking spot? Seems dangerous to shoot pics in the street at night!"

I know, it does look dangerous, doesn't it? They were standing on the median strip in the middle of Broad Street. That area of Philly is always bustling with people standing there with cars whizzing by; taking photos of City Hall and all the various beautiful buildings.

Thank you for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

  8. Good morning Valerie~

Thank you. I feel very blessed to be on a high floor in my apartment building because at night, the view is really lovely. PERFECT for pictures.

" Do you get to see people in windows as well?"

Yes, I do! In fact, you wouldn't believe the stuff I've seen through the windows of the hotel across the street - HAHAHAHAHA!

Aren't the newlyweds sweet? So romantic!

"I have never used the night-time setting on the camera..."

I actually didn't use the nighttime setting on my camera for these photos because it doesn't seem to work very well. I used a longer exposure setting so that I didn't have to use the flash. But the tricky part was holding the camera still. I really need to purchase a tripod, so that I can have more stability.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a marvi Monday and week!

"A few of them make me think of the old film noir movies from the Forties! "

Yes, I thought the same thing too. Especially the one of The Westbury Apartments. That whole street looks very vintage, which is why I think they shoot a lot of films in that area.

"I'm so glad you broke out of auto mode--that's a good lesson for life as well as photography!"

HA! You're absolutely right! A good lesson of life, I never thought of that!!!!

  12. Ron, these are beautiful! Wow, the view from your apartment is amazing. It does take on a fiery glow. I sat here staring at that first photo, looking at all the lights from the windows. The shot of the misty fog is beautiful too.

Love the romance you captured in the newlywed photographs. That last one looks like something you'd see on Bride Magazine. I love the dress too!

Thank you for sharing night with us. Have a wonderful week, Ron.

  13. Hey there Lady Dianne~

Isn't the wedding couple so romantic? I feel soooo blessed to have gotten those shots because I took the photographs so fast, I didn't think any of them would come out. I set the camera on a longer exposure, so it took FOREVER for the camera to CLICK.

"I have a lot of trouble with night shots still
I can't see the settings without my glasses then I can't see the LCD screen with them on so I fumble a lot."

HA! I'm the same way! If I don't have my reading glasses on I can't see the settings. I took most of these shots WITHOUT my glasses and just prayed that they wouldn't be all blurry!

  15. I love nighttime shots, too...especially when it comes to cityscapes. Some of my favorite pics are downtown at night - both Portland and Seattle. It's that play of lights and shadow, and the soft amber glow, that really makes a picture shine.

  17. You perfectly captured the essence of nighttime in a city and its amber glow, Ron. The one of the mural is so crisp and clear. You can really see the three-dimension as if you could walk through it. And I love how the flood lights illuminate it.

Philadelphia is notorious for it's wall murals and mosaics. The one pictured here is not far from where I live.

I feel so blessed to have the view from my apartment. Nighttime is especially nice. And when it snows in the winter, it's so cool to see the white flakes cascading down over the city. It's looks like one of those snow globes!

  26. Wow.
    WOW.

It is a gorgeous dress..... And what timing!

I love the lights in the sky in the foggy one. The amber hues--perfection in its own right. And the mural--holy cow. I can't get that crisp of a shot in daylight!
    Amazing. Truly.
I don't think I shoot anything at night--just sunset stuff, and then it's all about stopping at a certain point because I know it's starting to get grainy. Well, that and I've taken a few hundred and I've missed the point of even being OUT there. LOL

They're lovely, these shots. And I'm envious of the view you get--one that promotes night shots with city lights.

Maybe I oughta play around and see what I can come up with--but when nighttime comes I'm ready to enjoy what I've already crammed on the memory card....it's time to be DONE. LOL
    There. That's my excuse!
Well, that and I don't have a clue about where to even start.

I do have a monopod and it's awesome for closeups and 'quickthere'satraincoming' shots. LOL
One of the nicest things to be gifted with, frankly. It's not as cumbersome as a tripod and it's handy andy!
Though, I'm thinking for those night shots--tripod would be required.
    WILD guess......

    Hiya Mel!

Isn't the dress prrrreeeeeeeeeetty? And yes, I was so lucky with the timing of this photo because I had not walked to CVS after I got out of work before going home, I would have missed it!

"I can't get that crisp of a shot in daylight!"

Oh yes you do! You're shots are always crystal clear and crisp. Especially the ones you take of the dusk skies/sunset. They're stunning! And let me tell you, those are challenging to shoot.

I so love the view from my apartment. That's one of the main things that made me rent this apartment.

"I do have a monopod and it's awesome for closeups and 'quickthere'satraincoming' shots. LOL

Wow...I've never heard of a monopod!?! I have to Google that tonight to see what they look like. I'm thinking after Christmas, I would like to treat myself to a tripod and perhaps a new camera. Usually after Christmas they have some great sales! :)

  34. Honestly Ron....I think these are THE best night shots I have ever seen!!! How freakin' awesome is it that you got a picture of the photographer and the bride and groom!! LOVE that theatre picture!! The lighting in all of them is just amazing!! Maybe you could come to Florida when my daughter gets married in November??? I am SOOOO a night person. I prefer to stay up all night and sleep in the morning. I'm just backwards. Always have been. Prefer the sights, the sounds, the smells of the night...that's just me!! It did present a problem when I was a single mother who had to drop my daughter off at daycare and get to a 7:30AM meeting!! REAL big problem. My boss pretty much just got used to my being late!! Then he was such a peach...and let me change my hours to part time and eleven to three worked out just great!! Now, I am so happily self employed and can work all night long if I want to!! xo

  35. Those are wonderful night shots. So clear. Too bad you don't know the couple to send the photos to - I bet they'd love that perspective.

Although I'm more of a day person, I do like being out at night and seeing the lights. I also love driving through a neighborhood at night and seeing those accidental glimpses of life through windows. A family watching TV or someone walking through the room. Something very cozy about it.

  36. I'm not a photographer but most of the time I find my nighttime shots quite disappointing. The pictures you've captured are beautiful especially the street which is glowing in amber. I think its a mural that is lighted on the left of the street? The second picture that is the view from your apartment window is a real ‘fiery glow.' The buildings look as though they're on fire. Great shots!

"I am SOOOO a night person. I prefer to stay up all night and sleep in the morning. I'm just backwards. Always have been."

I'm the SAME way!!! Backwards. I seem to get more energy as the day progresses, so that by night....I'm raring to go where most people are tired.

"...when I was a single mother who had to drop my daughter off at daycare and get to a 7:30AM meeting!! REAL big problem."

HA! OMG...I HATE early morning meetings!!! Sometimes for my job I have meetings VERY early, which means I have to get up at the crack of dawn so that I can PUMP enough coffee in me to wake up!

  42. I adore these! I consistently love your compositions and find myself wanting to linger over each photo in this series and study it to discover all the treasures almost hiding in the shadows. While on vacay last week I was experimenting too (trying the dusk/dawn and sunset settings). One of my favorites is the silhouette setting. When used in non-silhouette photography, it deepens the tones of the composition. Similar to the velvety texture you mentioned -- and I completely get that out of your photos. There is still a lot of energy, but it's dialed back. A completely different feeling than your daylight photographs. Well done Ron!!

    Thank you :)

I felt beyond lucky to capture those shots of the newlyweds. Soooo romantic, aren't they?

"I think Batman and Superman are out there somewhere, doing good deeds, crime fighting, and looking at your building too, keeping you safe."

Funny you said that because Superman just flew by my window!

    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!

  59. Thank you, Lowell :)

I'm just now starting to learn how to use my camera without having it in auto mode. I've been learning as I go along. It takes practice, doesn't it?

Thanks for stopping by, buddy! Have a great weekend!

  60. The view from your apartment window is so beautiful. How lucky you are to look out your window at night and see that. The first shot of the building looks as though it's on fire from within because of the amber glow. You can almost see flames.

Each one of these has a completely different feel, yet they all represent night time in a city so accurately.

That mural is just too great. The detail is mind-blowing!

    Really great shots, Ron!
