Truthfully, if you gave me the choice between eating at a five-star, fancy schmancy restaurant or a plain, old diner…I would always choose the diner.

Call me crazy, but not only do I LOVE diner food, I also relish the whole atmosphere.

There is something so BOHEMIAN about the ‘diner experience.’

I love the fact that a diner seems to draw so many delightfully off-center and eclectic-type characters into its world. Especially in a city.

And I don’t mean only the customers, but also the people who work there.

Like the gum chewing waitress who still wears a beehive hairdo from the ‘50s, red lipstick, liquid black eyeliner, and a pencil stuck behind her ear, who comes to your table and says, “Okay honey...so what’s it gonna be?”

I love to eat. But I’m someone who enjoys very basic food; therefore diner food is right up my alley.

It’s good, hearty, and down-to-earth.

Christmas afternoon, my dear friend Marge and I decided to have dinner at our favorite diner in Philadelphia – Midtown III.

Marge is a lot like me in that she’s very casual. The two of us had been working non-stop throughout December and were exhausted, so when I suggested that we get together in the late afternoon for a bite to eat; comfortably dressing in jeans and sneakers, she said, “Let’s do it!”

Well, we had WONDERFUL time – great food, great conversation, and relaxing - just what we both needed.

Here are a few photos I took of our day.

Inside the diner. Dig those tacky, but endearing chandeliers; adding to the whole diner ambiance.

Marge ordered one of the Christmas specials on the menu with a Manhattan cocktail. *it came with a dessert  which "I" ate.

Me, being someone who adores breakfast, ordered a massive Greek omelet with hash browns, toast and coffee.

I actually had THREE cups of coffee (four, if you want to include the one I had at home that morning) which didn’t go over so well with the omelet, hash browns, and bread pudding.

Because as soon as we left the restaurant, I had to RUN home and do this….

Yes, what a great Christmas day I had. Great friend. Great food. And a holiday POOP that made my toes curl.

Happy weekend everyone!

  2. I'm just trying to think what our equivalent is to your diners and I'm not winning. Judging by your pictures I think I would feel very much at home in one. What swung me to thinking it was the omelet.... it looked fabulous. I adore omelets and often complain that we don't get them here. Omelets were daily meals whenever we were on vacation. Surely it couldn't have been the reason for the rush to the loo.... grins. Anyway, you had a great day and that's what counts. Happy New Year, my friend x.

  4. I love diners too! I used to go to the Diner on the Square and get the Cindy's Salad. Miss that place in Philly. Not sure if it's still there.

  5. Those booth cover colors are fabulous! I ate at a diner in NYC last year. Got the fish and chips, but I had seriously considered an omelet, because there isn't much 'truck driver food' that I appreciate! Glad that you had a good time with your friend.

And I WAS hungry, until I scrolled down! Have a super weekend, Ronnie.

  6. *laughing!* Oh dearheart--you're talkin' to a smalltown gal that used to waitress at one of those joints--and I had THE best time! I loved all those all farts that harassed and adored being harassed! Must be why I still gravitate to those wee places with the best food around! I make a point to discover new ones to get a good cuppa coffee and a decent breakfast at. Nothing like 'em, I swear. Oh the decorum! *laughing*
I adore the paper placemats--but no colours?! :-( It's okay..I tote my own and woulda coloured in the boxes and letters!

Oh it's not that the bigger joints don't have their own style, but with a booth like the one you two parked in.....LOL....very much home to me! And what a great old building!!

It's good you had company on the holiday. But really.....bread pudding?! *laughing* Small wonder your toes were curling.

  8. Ah, the American diner--where would we be without this fabulous institution? These places are crawling with characters on both sides of the counter and the 24-hour diners are the best because you get to see all the creatures of the night. You get a show as well as a hearty meal! Great post, buddy, and that's the straight poop! Have a great weekend!

Aren't they FUN? They give you TONS of food at a great price, and the atmosphere is so BOHEMIAN.

I didn't know if Europe had diners, so I'm glad you had the opportunity to experience a few while you were in the States.

"I'm just trying to think what our equivalent is to your diners and I'm not winning. Judging by your pictures I think I would feel very much at home in one. "

As I shared in my comment to Pearl, I wasn't sure if you have diners in Europe. Diners were extremely popular in '50s (like the one in TV show "Happy Days"), but they seem to still be going strong - especially in cities in the U.S. They serve LARGE portions of food at a very reasonable price. And the atmosphere is faaaaaaabulous!

" I adore omelets and often complain that we don't get them here."

I loooooooooove omelets! I don't eat a lot of eggs at home, so when I go to a diner I will almost always order one.

"Surely it couldn't have been the reason for the rush to the loo.... grins."

HA! Yup, that and the FOUR cups of coffee I had!

"Ah, the American diner--where would we be without this fabulous institution?"

You are soooooo right! When I still lived in NYC, diners were my favorite place to eat because they always gave you a TON of food at a reasonable price. And being a starving actor at the time, that was very important.

"These places are crawling with characters on both sides of the counter and the 24-hour diners are the best because you get to see all the creatures of the night."

Amen....ALL the creatures of the night. So it was a great place for an actor to do 'character studies.'

"I make a point to discover new ones to get a good cuppa coffee and a decent breakfast at. Nothing like 'em, I swear. Oh the decorum! *laughing*"

Yes, isn't diner coffee the BEST? I don't know if it's the brand they use or the way they make it, but nothing tastes better than diner coffee!

"I adore the paper placemats--but no colours?! :-( It's okay..I tote my own and woulda coloured in the boxes and letters!"

No, they didn't have colours, darn it.

"Oh it's not that the bigger joints don't have their own style, but with a booth like the one you two parked in.....LOL....very much home to me! And what a great old building!!"

That's what I love about the diners here, they're in some of the greatest old buildings, which ADD to the atmosphere. True, bigger joints do have their own style, but I guess I feel more at home in a diner.

    " But really.....bread pudding?!"

HA! I know, but OMG...it was sooooooooooo YUMMY!! It was served warm.

I haven't eaten in a diner so long, but I really do enjoy them. When I still lived in a city, I ate at them more often because they were everywhere. I agree, the atmosphere is the 'thing' about diners. Great food, great prices and great strange characters. I'm impressed that the diner you and your friend ate at served alcohol. I would have ordered a martini!

    Have a wonderful weekend, Ron.

True, cities seem to have a plethora of diners. Especially the cities here on the east coast. It's almost traditional.

"I'm impressed that the diner you and your friend ate at served alcohol. I would have ordered a martini!"

I know, can you believe it? Not all the diners here have liquor licenses, but this one (which is a chain) does.

NYC truly has some of the BEST diners. And the MOST. When I still lived there, I used to eat at the frequently because (being a starving actor at the time), they gave you a lot food and it was cheap.

  20. Bohemian. That's the perfect word for describing a city diner, Ron! They seem to draw in all the artist, creative and misfit characters of the world. I love diners myself, and will often order breakfast. I don't care how I prepare breakfast for myself, nothing tastes better than a diner breakfast. I will sometimes eat at one by my apartment on Sunday morning while reading the newspaper.

Yeah, and I've got to watch how much coffee I drink because one cup too many can bring on the POOPS.

Yes, they do, don't they? I always feel like I'm in the opera La Boheme!

"I don't care how I prepare breakfast for myself, nothing tastes better than a diner breakfast."

You said it, buddy. I don't normally make a big breakfast at home, like, eggs, hash browns and toast. Usually I have a cup of coffee with a bowl of cereal and a banana. But whenever I crave a hearty American breakfast, it's always best at a diner!

"Yeah, and I've got to watch how much coffee I drink because one cup too many can bring on the POOPS."

  22. Oh, good. I was just thinking, it's been a looong time since Ron overshared on his blog. Glad you took care of that with your description of a toe-curling poop.

Even though Tara and I had upscale Chinese food on New Year's Eve, I can (and do) also appreciate the simplicity (and down-home comfort) of diner food on occasion. Actual diners are rare out here, but there are plenty of hole-in-the-wall restaurants that fit the bill nicely.

    All hail the mighty diner!

I'll bet you enjoyed the old sitcom "Alice," too!

Ahahahahaha!! Poor Ron!! Love the curled toes!!

You know, while I was reading this, I was thinking 'Ron likes DINER food??' but then I realised that your diners are probably a lot better than our equivalents, which haven't earned the nickname 'greasy spoon' cafes for nothing. The food in a 'snack bar cafe' here is (usually) just awful, heart-attack-on-a-plate style food. Often cold and badly cooked too. Whereas in America I've had some memorable meals in diners!!

I kinda had a feeling that both you and Tara enjoyed the diner experience too! I don't eat at them all the time, however, whenever I feel the need for down-home 'comfort' food, a diner it is!

    Hail the mighty diner!

"You know, while I was reading this, I was thinking 'Ron likes DINER food??'"

HA! I know, a lot of people think that because overall I try to eat more on the healthy. But sometimes I just gotta have good old-fashioned, down-home comfort food that's FULL of calories, fat and basic. For me, it's all about balance (you know us Libras). I try to listen to my body and allow it to tell me what's okay and what's not okay, so I don't go overboard.

The diner that my friend Marge and I ate at prepares their food very well. Clean, not too greasy, and hearty!

  26. Totally not expecting that last bit!!!

Okay, shaking it off. What a cool looking diner. I'd definitely eat there. I love the colors. I also love a good breakfast like that at any time of day. But not a gum chewing waitress. That might even be a deal-breaker for me.

Bread pudding. Oh, my. I have to tell you, this is a night mare dish for me. The texture. It's just so... so wrong. I don't like soggy bread and I don't like pudding, so a pudding made out of soggy bread? No. But hashbrowns, an omelet and coffee? Hand it over!

Portland is great for casual dining too. We've got a pretty good mix of characters around here so going in to an eatery can be as visual entertaining as the food itself. Good times.

  34. Haha!!! Ron and I had just that experience lately. We each had to have extra bathroom time after going to the diner. He loves diners. I'm getting more used to them and am appreciating the experience more with each visit. We have one that we tend to go to more than others but are open to a change-up occasionally, especially last weekend when his parents invited us out to Denny's for their 'Hobbit breakfast'... I kid you not. They thought it would be cute because Ron loved the book and we recently saw the movie, which he did not like at all, btw. Whew, lot of food! And they had free WiFi so I was able to bring up the pictures from Christmas on my laptop and show them.
Hey, do you ever get Scrapple at the diner?? Eeeww, I can't stand it, but Ron likes it and orders it occasionally.

  35. That place looks soooo cool! I'm a big diner fan, too. My friend's niece is moving to a city that I used to live in when I was in my 20's. It's artsy and fun and close to the downtown scene. She asked me to help her find an apartment but first I had to take her to this diner for breakfast that has been there for a hundred years. And yes, so have the waitresses. It probably only has about 10 tables and counter seating. We were lucky enough to get a table in the section with a ceiling fan that you would see in a 10 years old's room. Each blade is a different primary color. The outside of the diner used to be silver, like the old dining cars but they've since painted it. Best part? HUGE servings for like 5 bucks. The best!

Thank you for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're enjoying an awesome weekend and continuing to mend well.

  50. I love diners
I read somewhere that NJ has the most diners in all the US
there are 4 of them within 2 minutes of my home
I almost always get breakfast no matter what time it is
    unless I get a cheeseburger
    or meatloaf
    or tuna melt
    or ...
    you get the idea :)

  52. i like diners too and prefer them over fancy restaurants, especially since i can't afford fancy restaurants. my favorite diner in maplewood burned down, but we could get a lot of food for an affordable price. and the food was great!

we (the four of us) are still going to get dressed up and go out for a night on the town though. :)

  54. Hey there V Girl~

"my favorite diner in maplewood burned down, but we could get a lot of food for an affordable price. and the food was great!"

Aw, shucks! Well, the next time you come to Philly we'll go to Midtown because I think you would enjoy their menu. It's plentiful and very reasonably priced.

"we (the four of us) are still going to get dressed up and go out for a night on the town though. :)"

Will do, and looking forward to it! I'll have to bring out my tuxedo and black patent leather shoes - HA!

Thanks for stopping by, girl. Hope you had a supa' weekend. Wasn't the weather gorgeous?

  55. Ha, I love the last photo, Ron. Like you I love diners. Love breakfast all day long. One of my favorite diners however is the Fog City Diner in San Francisco, which may look like a diner on the outside and has the same booths on the inside, but they are mahogany, and there is a lighted onyx bar. The food is a mix between diner and upscale. Last time I went, shrimp and grits and it was some kind of good. But, too much diner food makes too much Bill and I have to space out my visits.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Seems where I live is dominated by soulless chain store eateries. There's absolutely no character to 'em. Karin and I have to head into downtown San Diego proper for some good eats at interesting places. It's been our routine to go out to dinner every Friday after work, and it's a grip of fun to discover new places to dine. Sure, it can get expensive, but the ambiance can't be beat.

Unfortunately we have yet to meet your beehive hairdo waitress' equivalent out here on the west coast. Shame...

    Helloooooooooooo Bill!

OMG, it's so great to see ya!!! You haven't posted in a while and I was getting concerned and hoping all was well.

" Like you I love diners. Love breakfast all day long."

Amen and Halleluiah! Isn't there nothing more faaaaaabulous breakfast?

Sounds AWESOME! I've never been to San Fran, but have a feeling I would love it. Not only for the city itself, but also the weather because it never gets hot.

"But, too much diner food makes too much Bill and I have to space out my visits."

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, how funny!

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you and Paul had a fantabulous weekend!

You know, Florida is the same way....souless chain store eateries. Florida (as much as I loved living there) is very homogenized.

Aw...sounds like a GREAT Friday after work rondevu! I like to try different places myself because it keeps things interesting and fun. I'm all about the atmosphere.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you and the family had a terrific weekend!
