If I were ever going to have a dog, I would want a Norwich Terrier.

My love for this ADORABLE breed (from the United Kingdom) all started back in 2003, when I first saw the movie, Best In Show.

If you’ve never seen this film, PLEASE (I beg of you) watch it because it’s my favorite movie (mockumentary) by writer/director/actor, Christopher Guest, who in my opinion is pure, insane GENIUS! I guarantee you will laugh your ass off through the entire 90 minutes of this film. I actually own Best In Show, and no matter how many times I view it (like 5 billion times already), I will laugh as hard as I did the first.

Christopher Guest possesses a keen ability to know WHO to cast in his films, which is a big part of his brilliance.

People like: Parker Posey, Eugene Levy, Michael McKean and Jennifer Coolidge, to name but a few. All of whom are stellar at improvisational acting.

And from my own experience, improvisation is the most challenging type of acting because you have to fly by the seat of your pants; able to think and react spontaneously, with little or no script.

Anyhow, as you can tell from my initial post photo, this movie has to do with the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show and five hilariously eccentric contestants, who enter their dogs in the show.

My two personal favorite characters are portrayed by Parker Posey (as Meg Swan) and Jennifer Coolidge (as Sherri Ann).

The Norwich Terrier (named Winky), is my favorite dog in the movie. I had never seen a Norwich before watching this film, but instantly fell in love with it because they have the most precious little face, wiry hair, and short, stubby legs. OMG…I wanted to reach through the TV screen; grab the dog and then squeeze and kiss him to death. I read an article online about Norwich Terriers, which said they have a very friendly, affectionate and good-natured personality; getting along with other dogs and people.

And I can believe it too, because they just emanate a sweetness.

Here, let’s take a look at a Norwich…

Right after getting groomed. Look at those sweet little eyes that say, "Okay...how do I look?"
The little pink tongue hanging out is killing me. Doesn't he look HAPPY?
I wanna pick this one up and EAT it. Tooooo damn cute!
So tell me, don't you just want to kiss that black button nose?

This one looks like a little toy that you would put batteries in.
Look at those precious stubby legs.
BEYOND adorable!

Wishing you a BEST in show weekend everyone!
X

  1. I will admit, that is a very cute dog, although my faves are the hound category. I've never seen the movie, but we like to watch those dog shows on TV. They crack me up, esp. The women who show the dogs. WHY do they always wear skirts and hose like old ladies?

  2. While you're endeared to those precious stubby legs of the dog in the last photo, I'm terrified of that evil look in its eyes and that angry little mouth. I'm glad 'Little Cujo' has such stubby legs because I'm pretty sure I could outrun it. ;-)

  3. Might not care to say 'I wanna pick this one up and eat it'... if you are visiting, uh, Cameroon maybe. ;)

I can't believe I've never seen this movie!! I think we'd definitely enjoy it though. Will keep it in mind for sure.

Ollie is a pure bred. He's a Hungarian Vizsla. You'de think we could have shown him. Not the case though. Sweet boy only had one testicle.

I always thought those 'mop' dogs were neat... Puli, I think they're called.

Have a wonderful weekend!! Guess Philly will be a bit quiet with everyone off to the shore for the holiday.

  4. cute dog, looks like a toy. i actually like the chocolate lab in the photo, if that is a chocolate lab. i'm not good at naming dog. all cats and dogs are so darn cute when they are kittens or puppies and then they seem to grow out of their cuteness. sometimes. my kid wants a dog, but she will have to wait until we fly south. parents always end of taking care of the pet eventually.

i will put that movie on my list. i don't have netflix anymore, but might try redbox. you and i seem to have similar taste in movies.

  5. You're right about one thing--the stubby legs. Makes me laugh.
This is not a dog... This is one of those furry rats that people keep on their laps and have hanging out the window when they're driving around town. OMG....talk about a hazard on the road!
A REAL dog -- one that's bigger than the ball or stick your tossing. LOL

Seriously--he's cute in a 'where do the batteries go' sorta way. But little dogs make me more nervous than a REAL dog does. And I had a spaniel for years! The KID'S had a spaniel for years... (okay...I miss the spaniel!......but geeze...it wasn't MY DOG.)

I'll be on the patio, in the yard, in the laundry room and trying to maneuver a vacuum cleaner this weekend.
MOSTLY cuz the instructions for running the DVD player somehow went *poof* from the Kindle. :-/
Gee. Wonder how I did THAT?!
    *ahem* :-D

  6. Hey, Ron, another film recommendation from you!

Between "Somewhere in Time" and "Best in Show" I'll have to get a ton of popcorn and host a Ronnie Movie Night!

I've heard great things about this film and I really do intend to see it. I remember Christopher Guest from "This is Spinal Tap" and I thought he was brilliant. And I've loved Eugene Levy ever since i first saw him in the old "Second City TV" show.

You're so right about improv. It is challenging, it is daring, and when it succeeds, it is out of this world.

And those doggies are so cute! I love 'em!

Have a great holiday weekend, buddy, and may you be the best in whatever show you're in!

  7. Good afternoon Ron. I guess you've talked me into getting the film 'cause I adore dogs. I don't think I've ever seen a Norwich Terrier before. He's definitely a cute dog, the sort to cuddle up with in winter, on a huge couch right in front of a roaring fire. Now you've got me wanting to buy another dog; so sad that I can't. Will the film compensate, I wonder.

Hope you have a fabulous weekend. I'm going to spend mine finding out the new camera works.

"I've never seen the movie, but we like to watch those dog shows on TV. They crack me up, esp."

I've never seen (or been to) a dog show other than the one I watched in this movie and it was hilarious. Almost like a BEAUTY PAGEANT FOR DOGS - HA!

"The women who show the dogs. WHY do they always wear skirts and hose like old ladies?"

    Bwahahhhhahahaha!

You HAVE to watch this film because it shows a completely different side to a dog show. All the women (and men) were dressed to the nines on the show floor.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a great holiday weekend!

    'Little Cujo"

Yes, he does have almost an evil (mischievous) look in his eyes. But...OMG...he's so CUTE!!!

Thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Have a fantastic weekend!

    Bwhahahahahahaha! Mary, that was HILARIOUS!!!!

I can't believe you haven't seen this film as well, because you and I are such movie freaks. I really think you would LOVE this film because it's about dogs, but I also think you would 'get' the crazy humor.

"Ollie is a pure bred. He's a Hungarian Vizsla. You'de think we could have shown him. Not the case though. Sweet boy only had one testicle."

Aaaaaw. Yet, I've seen photos of Ollie on your blog and he's so handsome!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, neighbor. Have a wonderful holiday weekend as well!

Yes, Philly will be VERY quiet this weekend because everyone will be headed to the shore, starting today. I kinda like that though, because I can walk around the city without the crowds.

  11. Hey there V Girl!

" i actually like the chocolate lab in the photo, if that is a chocolate lab. i'm not good at naming dog."

That's a Blood Hound, who is owned by the character which Christopher Guest portrays. In the movie, that dog actually wins in his category. He is SUCH a lovable dog!!!

"my kid wants a dog, but she will have to wait until we fly south. parents always end of taking care of the pet eventually."

That's the difference between a cat and dog. A dog requires much more care and attention than a cat, if you go a trip (walking, feeding, pooping, peeing). I grew up mainly with dogs as our family pet. It wasn't until I got older, did we finally get a cat. I love them both - cats and dogs.

"i will put that movie on my list. i don't have netflix anymore, but might try redbox. you and i seem to have similar taste in movies."

Knowing your sense of humor, I think you would LOVE this film. Truly, HILARIOUS!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have an excellent weekend!

Rob, I truly think you would love this film because the humor is so brilliant!

" I remember Christopher Guest from "This is Spinal Tap" and I thought he was brilliant. And I've loved Eugene Levy ever since i first saw him in the old "Second City TV" show."

The first time I ever saw Christopher Guest was in the movie, "Waiting For Guffman" which he also wrote and directed. Another HILARIOUS film in which Eugene Levy was also in (playing a dentist). BRILLIANT actor!

"You're so right about improv. It is challenging, it is daring, and when it succeeds, it is out of this world."

AMEN! I'm not very good at improve acting, so I admire those actors who are because it's damn hard.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Have a super holiday weekend!

I think you would LOVE this film because the humor is so hilarious. It's deadpan serious, but that's what's so funny about it. I love mockumentaries.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. Have a FABULOUS weekend!

  14. Hiya Mel!

"that people keep on their laps and have hanging out the window when they're driving around town. OMG....talk about a hazard on the road!"

Yes, I've seen the same thing and it always concerns me when I see the dog sticking their head and paws out the window; fearing they will fall out.

"Seriously--he's cute in a 'where do the batteries go' sorta way. But little dogs make me more nervous than a REAL dog does."

I grew up in a family with BIG dogs (German Shepherds). It wasn't until we got a small dog (a Yorkie-Poo) when we moved to Florida, did I fall in love with smaller dogs.

"MOSTLY cuz the instructions for running the DVD player somehow went *poof* from the Kindle. :-/Gee. Wonder how I did THAT?!"

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! I misplace directions as well, and then I have to figure how to work it myself.

  15. I've never seen this movie but think it sounds great...especially since I'm a dog person. I LUV watching dog shows and any movie with a cute dog in it gets my vote. While I have to say this little guy is adorable, my heart lies with the big dog breeds. I'd be the one who would own a Rotty, or Great Dane!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ron, these photos of the Norwich are adorable! I love them all but that last one is so cute I could die of cuteness! He does look like a toy.

I like terrier's, but I've never seen a Norwich before.

Thanks for sharing the movie recommendation as well because I'm going to be by myself this holiday weekend, so I may rent it on Netflix. I love Parker Posey!

    Have a wonderful weekend, Ron.

If you're a dog lover, then you will LOVE this film!!!! Truly, it is one of my top 5 comedies. And like I shared, no matter how many times I see it, I laugh and laugh!! The humor lies in that these people take themselves so seriously.

"While I have to say this little guy is adorable, my heart lies with the big dog breeds. I'd be the one who would own a Rotty, or Great Dane!"

It's funny because I was raised with BIG dogs in my family. We always had German Shepherds until we got a Yorkie-Poo, then fell in love with smaller dogs as well.

" I love them all but that last one is so cute I could die of cuteness! He does look like a toy."

Isn't he ADORABLE???? Those stubby legs just kill me!!!

A Norwich is a very interesting breed because although it's a terrier, they are not very aggressive and barky, like most terriers. They are very friendly and affectionate. I will sometimes see them in the park and they will always come up to me, wagging their little tail; and almost smiling!

    " I love Parker Posey!"

Isn't she faaaaaaaabulous? If she is ANY movie, I will watch it JUST to see her! She is BEYOND hilarious in this film, as well is Jennifer Coolidge. I will sometimes watch only the scenes they are in and LAUGH my ass off.

  21. Ron, this was by far my favorite Guest film as well. The scenes about the 'busy bee' were so hysterical! Parker Posey was just too funny. I've seen every single of his films and I have say, as you did, he is pure, insane GENIUS! Guffman is my second favorite of his, and then Mighty Wind. Jane Lynch and John Michael Higgins were hilarious!

Great photos of the Norwich. I love how you framed them. Adorable!

I sooooooooooo agree!!! ln fact, I was going to included one of the 'busy bee' scenes in this post, but didn't want to give the plot away. The scene with Parker in the pet store is so funny it makes me cry with laughter. She is BRILLIANT!

I was first introduce to Christopher Guest, when I watched Waiting For Guffman (HILARIOUS as well). But then when I saw Best In Show, it totally became my favorite.

Thanks for stopping by, bud. Have a super holiday weekend!

The busy bee scenes were hysterical!

Yes, the gay couple is so damn funny, I could die. Love the scene with them in the grocery store buying the meat. And it's the reactions of the guy behind the counter that make the scene hilarious.

" But I also loved the yuppie couple (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock). The busy bee scenes were hysterical!"

  28. I loved that show - very, very funny. I've also watched soem of the dog shows on TV - and Bijoux is right about how the women dress - very matronly. And soe of them keep food in their mouths that they take out and give to the dogs. It's absolutely disgusting.

The terrier is cute, although I'm not a little dog person. I find the pulis fascinating - you know the ones with rasta hair? And I like most hounds . I had a greyhound, so they are a favorite. And foxhounds, harriers, those sorts - they are the quintessential dog to me.

  30. This dog is absolutely precious! Can I just say I also LOVE this movie. I just randomly happened upon it one day and figured, why not? I fell in love with the movie instantly. And you are right, improv is insanely hard and not at all my forte! I much prefer script where I can learn my lines and begin to feel the character rather than guessing my way through a scene.

Yes, I read in the article I mentioned in this post, that they are natural born rodent chasers/hunters. I suppose they would be great to have if you lived on a farm perhaps.

  49. Hey....Best In Show! That's a great flick. What's funny is that most of the disturbing behavior exhibited in the movie can easily be ported over to the parents on that twisted show Toddlers and Tiaras. Heh...

And Terriers are great dogs. Sure, they can be a bit yappy if not trained correctly, but they have nothing but love to give, and make great movie companions while chilling on the couch. :-)

You said it! And it's interesting because in all the articles I read on Norwich's they said that for a terrier they don't bark or yap a lot, like most terriers. Which is good to hear, because if I ever do get one, I couldn't stand all that YAPPING - HA!

  51. Hi Ronnie,

I have never seen this film. It sounds like a riot!

But, I have lived several years in the world of dog shows. I had a Dacshund that was put in shows for about 5 years. I did the trotting in the ring, grooming( next to nothing for a smooth coat, just a bath, nails & such) and I guess most of what you saw.

You had people in there that were very competitive. Some of them dressed "to the nines"; I was a teen and was much more casual. It was a very good lesson in hard work and learning to lose. Because I put so much of my life into it, I took it hard when I lost. But, I need those lessons, like the pleasant ones of the victories.
My dog did have some modest success, but did not become a champion.I am sure that somewhere, my suster still has the pile of ribbons that our dog won.
Yup; my secret "past life" as a dog handler :)
Thanks so much for sharing and see ya soon, babe!

  53. Helloooooooo Barb!

OMG...I had NO IDEA you showed dogs?!?!?

Then you would REALLY love this movie because it's sort of a spoof/mockumentary about what goes on behind the scenes. It's truly one of the most hilarious movies I've ever seen!

A very good friend of mine had a Norwich terrier. He was called Cracker and he was one of my very first greyhound's best friends. Cracker was a great little dog. He was a mini dog who was in no way a 'lap' dog, but a dog with a lot of good, doggy personality. Nor was he a busy-busy yappy good-for-nothing-but-annoying-the-neighbours stinker with a Napoleon complex always trying to bite the ankles of bigger dogs. He was an all-round nice little guy.

Norwich terriers are pretty much identical to Norfolk terriers except for the flop or upright ears. Very nice little dogs (and I say that: me, who really doesn't much care for the small breeds).

Thanks for the movie tip - sounds like fun. I might have to look for that one!

Yes, that's what I read online. Norwich's are usually very friendly with other dogs, children, and people in general. AND that they don't YAP.

As a child, we always had LARGE dogs (German Shepherds), but there is something so cute and loving about a Norwich. They always look HAPPY.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. And yes, being a dog-lover, you would so LOVE this movie. It's HILARIOUS!

  61. Ahh, I LOVE that film, too! Christopher Guest is a genius, and I agree, "Best In Show" is his best movie. I own it too, and also laugh my ass off the entire 90 minutes. AND, I also fell in love with Norwich Terriers after seeing it for the first time.

Ron, you and I truly are kindred spirits. Which frightens me just a little, if I'm being honest. ;)

Have a great weekend, doggone it!

  62. If I was ever going to get another dog, I would definitely take a look at these. They do look adorable. I think we will stick with cats though. They use a litter tray so no picking poo up after them. Been there before and I'm too old for all that mess now ;)

  63. Hey there Lady Dianne~

"Jennifer Coolidge is a wonderful comedic actress, and she can do amazing accents.

She's on TV now in '2 Broke Girls'"

Isn't she AWESOME? Yes, she is AMAZING with accents and creating memorable characters. I had never seen her in anything before watching Best In Show. Now, I'm a HUGE fan of hers.

I will Google '2 Broke Girls' this weekend to check it out. Thanks for letting me know!

"Best in Show is a great, hilarious movie"

I totally agree. It's improvisational acting at its BEST!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. Have a beautiful weekend!

Is it NOT one of the most HILARIOUS films you've ever seen? I also love "Waiting For Guffman", but "Best In Show" will always be my favorite.

Christopher Guest has a certain sense of humor that I adore. His humor is played straight and serious, which is where the humor comes from.

"Ron, you and I truly are kindred spirits. Which frightens me just a little, if I'm being honest. ;)"

HA! I know, we both seem to like the same movies and we also believe in GHOSTS!!!!

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Have a great holiday weekend!

    X to you and Tara!
