Post updates by email:

Well, as I’m sure you’ve all heard, Google Reader will be going bye-bye next month.

*insert me screaming, “Noooooooooooooooooooooo!”

It seems like every time you turn around, Google is changing SOMETHING.

I mean I know they own 99.9% of the Internet, but paaaleeeese!

I read about this recent change months ago on a notice they sent out to all their users…

But I just kept clicking on the X and ignoring it because it seemed far away, and figured I would deal with it later.

*actually, if you want to know the truth, I was in complete DENIAL.

It sorta freaked me out a bit because I’ve been using Google ever since I started blogging 7 years ago, and had no idea where to look for an alternative.

However, periodically throughout these past months, I did some quick online research but it only made me more confused because in most of the forums I read, TONS of people were giving their opinion. Someone would say, “I think this one is the best!” Then someone else would chime in with, “No, no…THIS one is better!” Then someone would retort, "No, I've been using this one and I think it's better than ALL of them!"

By the time I finished reading all the comments I felt like Daffy Duck; more confused than ever.

So earlier this week, I got the idea of asking YOUR opinion because I feel like I know you guys better and value your input and suggestions.

I also thought it would be a great idea to post this because perhaps some of you are also looking for a Google alternative.

Therefore…

If you would be so kind as to share any information on a reader that you are using and enjoy, I would greatly appreciate it.

I don’t need anything fancy, just a basic reader, like Google.

Also, I’m looking for a reader where I can import my feeds without it being too involved.

Meaning, EASY.

And if by chance you don't use a reader, how do you keep updated with everyone's posts?

Thanks folks! Hopefully this will help others as well.

Because after all, we only have a few weeks left. However...

Have a SUPER weekend everyone!
X

And Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there!

Update: Thank you so much for your feedback everyone!

  1. Good morning Ronnie,

    How are ya, hon?

What?! I didn't know that one! Since I'm not on google reader since I switched to 2009, I'm out of the loop...

I really know zilch about RSS readers; I use the reader on my wp blog. I am going to let a more tech saavy person than I have the honor of recomending something.

Good luck!! I know, change is hard but maybe you will find some cool features on the new one that google reader didn't have!

Big hugs down to Love city and happy weekend!! xoxo

  3. Hey Ron, you and I really DO think alike. I have a note on my desk to blog about the retirement of Google Reader, although I probably won't bother now.

Bloglovin is the one I hear about most as a BETTER alternative to Reader, but I think I'll stick with my blog roll which can be seen in the sidebar of my blog under the heading MY BLOG LIST. Because of that I rarely looked at Google Reader. In case you don't know, although I am sure you do, the blog roll can be found in settings/layout/add a gadget but I'm not sure if you upmarket template will work the same as mine. The beauty of MBL is that I don't actually have to 'follow' people to know when they post their latest although there is an automatic facility if I do follow them. Unless Google decides to abandon that facility I shall stick with it. Otherwise, Bloglovin, here I come. I think!

A useful post, Ron, as always. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  4. I've told you before, I think. I use a Firefox extension called 'Brief'. I have tried a few other readers out there, but none are as convenient as the add-on I use. A little icon sits in your top bar (between the URL and search' showing the feed count unread. Once clicked a new tab opens with a sidebar showing the feed list (with your feed on top). Click on any one of the feeds and it opens in your main window, to read. If you want to comment, just click the title. It never interferes with your browsing and is by far the best I've looked at. I like simplicity now days :)

  5. What would I do without you, Ron??? I must have ignored that notice, because I had no idea! Now I'm in a panic! I suppose this is going to involve a lot of work on my part??

Maybe it's for the best......I have had weird problems recently, pulling up Google Reader. Sometimes it will show just ads, sometimes just one persons posts (who hasn't posted in a year) and sometimes my page is just blank. Aren't they afraid of everyone just leaving Blogger?

  6. The most highly touted reader in the professional online community is Feedly. Seamless transition but you've got to make that switch soon to ensure all of your old feeds (news, blogs, etc.) import from Google Reader. (I don't use any reader preferring to use Google's dashboard list for blogs and other sources for news.)

Among bloggers, Feedly and Bloglovin both get high marks. Why not do both like a lot of other bloggers?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Feedly is what everyone is talking about as the go to now that Google Reader is gone. I don't use one. I've got sites bookmarked in lists. Kind of silly and old school, I know. I'm not sure why I've been so reluctant to use a reader. Anyway, hope this helps.

  9. Love your blog, so I thought I'd give you a head's up on a great alternative to Reader (I was in your exact position a month ago): Newsblur (check it out at Newsblur.com and you can sign up for a trial before committing). Super easy, reliable, FAST, and it's not going anywhere (I've heard some things about Feedly that make me concerned for its ongoing presence -- I don't want to have to do this all over again in a year or so).

  10. Hey, Ronnie Ron! I wish to hell I could help you, brother, but NASA has chimps who are more tech-saavy than I am.

All I do is hit the "on" button on my computer and after that it's all in the hands of God, Odin, or the little blue men who make all things work. Amish people could probably teach me a thing or two about the Internet.
Good luck and good hunting, dog! And have a tremendous weekend!

  12. Babs, I might dig around that that extension to replace Boox for Firefox, which isn't really supported anymore. That's how I read blogs for new posts. Shows me what's new (in boldface).

  13. Ron, since I don't have a blog and don't read that many blogs, I just have the updates sent to me through an email. Like yours. So I hope that change doesn't effect how I get your emails.

And you're right, Google does seem to change things often. Especially in the past year.

I hope you find an alternative to Google reader.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Ron!

  14. For some some reason I never caught onto google reader and didn't like the RSS feed through wordpress. (They could even be the same thing for all I know!) I just email subscribe to the blogs I enjoy. However, with a weeks vacation it sure clogs up my email, lol!

  15. I've tried a few different options and like Feedly the best. It was seamless to import my current bloggy buddies into their platform and I'm hoping there won't be any hiccups once Reader is gone. I would be lost without some sort of Reader program so I panicked when I found out Google was getting rid of their reader service and started test-driving options. I hope you find something that works for you! Have a wonderful weekend!

Yes, several other bloggers here shared the same thing, they either receive updates from their blog list or bookmark a list on their browser.

The only thing I have reservations about on using the "blog roll list feature" as a reader is that it will take up too much space on my blog. Also, not every blog I read is on my blog roll.

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback, dear lady. I soooo appreciate it. I will look into Bloglovin because I've heard good things about it on other blogs as well.

Yes, that's right...I DO now remember you telling me that last year when they announced that Feedburner was shutting down as well. But what's weird, is that Feedburner still exists and I'm still using it. But I don't think it offers a 'read feature' so I do need to find another reader.

Thank you soooooo much for mentioning 'Brief' again because I will definitely look into it because it sounds really cool AND simple!

    You ROCK, girl!

  21. Hey there Bijoux!

" Now I'm in a panic! I suppose this is going to involve a lot of work on my part??"

I think there are certain readers that will automatically import our feeds into it, so it shouldn't involve too much work. I mean that's what I heard, so I'm assuming it won't be TOO involved.

".I have had weird problems recently, pulling up Google Reader. Sometimes it will show just ads, sometimes just one persons posts (who hasn't posted in a year) and sometimes my page is just blank. Aren't they afraid of everyone just leaving Blogger?"

Yes! I've experienced the same problems. I have a feeling that Google has been thinking about this 'close-down' for a while now, so that's probably why these things have been happening. I mean they even took the Google reader tab link off their list of options over a month ago.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Hopefully we'll all find a GOOD alternative soon.

Yes, out of all articles and forums I've read, FEEDLY seems to be the one many bloggers are talking about. And it's weird because I never even heard of it before this 'shut down' was announced. I will definitely look into it!

"Among bloggers, Feedly and Bloglovin both get high marks. Why not do both like a lot of other bloggers?"

Great idea! I actually use two different stat counters for my blog as well because I don't think using just one is totally accurate. Therefore, I take an 'average' from BOTH.

  31. Ron, I switched over to receiving post updates to an email subscription last year. I don't read a tremendous amount of personal blogs (except yours and a few others) because most of my online correspondence is through FB. However, there are several techie blogs I read, so email subscription seems to work best for me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hiya Matt!

Yes, it seems that more and more people are using email subscriptions for post updates or simply using a bookmark.

It's funny because I never used FB a lot when I had an account there. I really only used it to import my blog feed so that people I knew from various parts of the globe, who didn't blog, could get my updates. But since FB no longer allows blog feed imports, I just closed my account.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Have a super weekend!

  33. I dunno, man...I don't use readers. Or at least conventional readers. Wordpress has one built in, and you can add non-WP blogs and sites to their reader, as I've done with yours. I get updates there when you post, and also, I've subscribed via e-mail, so it's sort of a double whammy for me.

  36. Feedly is the one I switched to. If you do it before Google Reader disappears, it will synch itself and you don't have to enter any of the blogs. I"ve gotten used to it, and it seems to work fine. You can also change the label easily, and create different folders. "Must Read" and "Probably Defunct" and "Read Only" (for blogs I don't comment on) are a few of mine. I read too many blogs to keep them bookmarked and anyway, I don't want to have to check and see if someone has posted - I want a Reader to do that for me! I also don't want my email inbox cluttered up with alerts. Feedly is free and easy, so it got my vote. I'm kind of fond of free and easy. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am one of the weirdos that don't use a reader. I actually wish I did because I think it would be much easier. I actually just scroll through my comments archive and make sure I visit everyone who has visited me in the last few months- I also visit a few who don't visit me just because I love them that much. I hope you find a new reader you are one of my fav blogging buddies I would hate to see you go away with your reader!

  38. I'm in the same boat. Can't believe that they're doing away with Google Reader. My 'recommended' tab will no longer get used, and am not sure what alternative RSS reader I should revert to. I know there are others out there. Heck, I once saw a few articles on Google Reader recommending alternatives. I think I'll have to dig up those old articles.

If you as me, with Google Reader shutting down, these are indeed dark times...

  39. i really don't use a reader. i do follow meleah's tweets on twitter, so i find out about blog posts that way. however, once upon a time i signed up for bloglines, which i still have, but don't check it. i also use yahoo's rss feed and i have a page on "my yahoo" that has the blog posts i "follow" categorized by interest via tabs or pages (all my photography blogs on one page, fitness blogs another page, etc). for your blog i get an email and have your site on my toolbar so i can get to it easily. i save a few blogs in my favorites or bookmarks. don't read them as much as i used to.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I used to have Google Reader but found that I rarely used it. The list of blogs I read are on my sidebar. For the ones I was going to more frequently I chose the link version that says when the last post was and the title of the post.

All this tech stuff confuses me. I don't really understand what all the links people have on their blogs are for. RSS, etc. I don't know if I SHOULD be adding things to my blog or not? I have regulars who come by my page and comment. I don't want to link my blog to FB and I don't do Twitter, but as for the other possibilities... ? I don't know if someone can subscribe to an email version of my blog or comment following or whatever? I probably wouldn't know how to set it up if it's not automatically included with a Blogger page. LOL

So how do you use a Reader... just to read the blog without going to the person's page and then go there just for the commenting part?? I know... DUH!! I have a hard enough time leaving comments with Disqus or Wordpress because I have to remember my passwords. I shouldn't have even gotten a Wordpress account in the first place because I use Blogger for my own blog. But someone that I read announced she was moving her blog there and making it private so I had to set up an account, which wasn't really a problem, I mean I did it so I could continue following her. Turns out she didn't accept my request to read her new blog anyway, I sent a couple emails that went ignored too. But since I got the account, now it seems that people I read who are on WP I have to log my password in before leaving a comment. Bleh! I might be able to delete my account at WP and see if that helps.

Anyway, long story short... too late, I know... ha... I don't know what you should do. And I don't know what I should do. And you should tell me if I should add something to my blog and for what reason because I am not tech savvy AT ALL! Maybe I'd have more readers if I were. Na! I'd still have to post something interesting to get more readers. LOL

    Have a GREAT weekend! xo

  46. Hellooooooooo Mary!

Yes, all this techie stuff is somewhat confusing to me as well. There are just way too many options, so I try to keep things simple.

"I don't know if someone can subscribe to an email version of my blog or comment following or whatever? I probably wouldn't know how to set it up if it's not automatically included with a Blogger page. LOL"

Yes, that is VERY easy to do and something I would recommend because many people would rather get updates via email subscription rather than through a feed reader.

And it's very easy on Blogger. Just go to your layout and find gadgets. Select the "email subscription" widget and then all you have to do is place it on your sidebar - VIOLA! The widget is already set up for your blog feed, so you don't have to do a thing.

A reader is basically like getting a newspaper update to a blog you read. Everytime a person posts, your reader will notify you. It's kinda like getting an email. I usually read all the post updates on my reader and then I GO to the person's blog to leave a comment. I don't comment on all the blogs I read because some are just informational blogs.

I usually have no problem commenting on a Wordpress blog, nor do I ever need to sign into an account. For me, WP's commenting format is VERY easy and fast.

Listen, if you ever have questions about doing something on your blog and you're stuck, just email me and I will try to help you if I can.

Much thanks for stopping by, neighbor! Have a faaaaaaabulous weekend!

  47. Ron, I'm like you. I thought I had a ton of time until Google shut its reader down, but now July 1st is almost here. I'm screaming too. I did try the Google Bookmark, but it's kind of involved. You have to "add" all your web-sites/blogs.

I did try Feedly. I don't like it much right now. I guess cuz I'm not used to it. Google is so much better. The jerks.

I guess I'll have to get used to Feedly or maybe try out Kelly M's suggestion of Newsblur.

I'm amazed though at how many people don't use feeders. It seems more people don't use them than do.

Let me know what you decide to do.

    Have a fantabulous weekend!!

  48. Ron, believe it or not, I do it the old-fashioned way. I usually just bookmark the blogs I read and then check the updates when I know a blogger will post. Also, I do use email subscriptions on certain blogs, like yours.

I'm glad I never used Google reader because I had a feeling after they bought Feedburner and then got rid of it, they were going to make more changes.

I mean I know they own 99.9% of the Internet, but paaaleeeese!

I totally agree! Google owns EVERYTHING.

"Ron, I'm like you. I thought I had a ton of time until Google shut its reader down, but now July 1st is almost here. I'm screaming too."

OMG...can you believe how FAST the time flew? Now it's only two weeks away, so I HAVE to find alternative, and FAST.

Interesting to read about your feedback on Feedly. Thank you for that. I think if I do use a reader instead of just using an email subscription, I will 'try out' Feedly to see how I like it because many people here use it and it sounds fairly easy to import my feeds.

Yes, I also want to look a bit closer into Newsblur because they have a FREE version.

I'm amazed though at how many people don't use feeders. It seems more people don't use them than do."

I know...can you believe that? I knew SOME people didn't use a reader, but I'm amazed at how many here don't use one. I would be lost without a reader because it seems like it would take up so much more time, checking blogs to see if they updated.

Thanks a BUNCH for stopping by and sharing your feedback, my friend. MUCHLY appreciated.

    Have a FAN- tabulous weekend!

  50. Hey ho Robert!

You bookmark your blogs? WOW! I'm AMAZED at how many people do that. I used to do that when I first started blogging because I didn't read THAT many blogs, but now I just think it would take me too long to keep checking up on updates.

"I'm glad I never used Google reader because I had a feeling after they bought Feedburner and then got rid of it, they were going to make more changes."

OMG...I can't believe you said that because I thought the same thing when they got rid of Feedburner. But oddly enough, it still works because I'm using Feedburner to burn my own feed and for email subscriptions.

Thanks a lot for stopping by and sharing your feedback, buddy. Much appreciated!

    Have a SUPA' weekend!

  51. Um,.. What is Google reader? I just click to access your blog.
I guess that answers that then.

  52. Hey Dale!

Google Reader is a blog URL feed subscription (a list of the blogs you read). From what others have shared who are also on Wordpress, they already supply a feed reader for those who use WP as their blog platform.

You're right, you must already be using that, so that is your reader.

There are various feed readers you can use and the one I use is Google Reader. They are closing it down, so now I have to find a different one.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Have a super weekend!

  53. You're right, WordPress provides a reader for followed blogs. They don't seem very good at doing notifications of new posts though.
    Enjoy your weekend too Ron.

You're right, because someone else said the same thing. Which is why some people on WP choose an additional reader.

I actually used WP as my blog platform many years back, but they didn't have that feed reader feature back then.

  55. I really like the WordPress Android app. It's a good clean UI, and since I use my phone for everything it is nice to have a simple and intuitive input medium. To be perfectly honest, if I read every post of all the blogs I follow, I'd never get time to write, (case in point; I've felt a bit guilty recently about not commenting on blogs I follow, so I've spent three evenings this week getting pulled into reading loads of other people's work instead of concentrating on my own. Consequently, I appear to have missed this weekend's flash of inspiration and am currently fishing for a post) so I shall have to try and focus this afternoon.
I'll probably end up just starting writing any old nonsense and see where it takes me. Bear that in mind next time you see a post from me. Hahahaha

  56. "To be perfectly honest, if I read every post of all the blogs I follow, I'd never get time to write..."

Yes, I know what you mean because blogging takes LOADS of time. From posting, to responding to comments, to reading and commenting on other blogs, and to working a full time job. This is why I don't have time to use Facebook, Twitter, or all the other social networks. For me, blogging is my favorite way to socialize.

I often end up finding things to write about from being inspired through what other bloggers write about. Something they say will often spark something within myself, that I can elaborate on in my own way.

"I'll probably end up just starting writing any old nonsense and see where it takes me. Bear that in mind next time you see a post from me."

Trust me, sometimes I get that way myself. After having this blog for over 6 years now, it takes effort sometimes to come up with something to post. But my feeling is, I would rather post something, than nothing. And sometimes just sharing any old nonsense is FUN!

    So blog on, my friend!

  60. Hey Ron! I am trying Feedly and the jury is still out, so I haven't made a decision yet. Very behind in reading blogs as I'm just plain worn out from all this estate stuff. Hope all's well in your world, my friend! Enjoy your weekend! xo Jeanne

OMG...I've learned SO MUCH from this post because I can't believe how many bloggers DON'T use a reader!?!

Yes, you've been a great help because now I'm thinking I should just SKIP using a reading and see how I like it.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady! Hope you're having a SUPA weekend! Don't you just LOVE how cool it is??

  63. Hey there Jeanne!

You're using Feedly???? I think I may do like you and try it out for a few days before the month is up because I can always change to a different one. Feedly is the reader that most everyone here said they use and like. So I'll give it a go and see what I think.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. No worries, because I totally understand how busy you've been. Me too with Father's Day in retail. OY!

X to you and the girlz!

  64. I've never used a reader - Ive always just used my blog roll - however - that's become problematic for me lately - because it takes FOREVER to click on 78+ links, and waiting for them to load, just to see if my favorite bloggers have updated. I am actually looking for some suggestions myself and I will be scrolling through these comments to find some!

OMG...I don't know HOW you do that!?!? I used to do that before I got so many blogs to read, I eventually had to get a reader.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with FEEDLY. I'm gonna to try it out for a week to see if I like it. If not, I will try another one.

Thanks for stopping by, girl! Hope you had a super weekend!

  66. Like you I panicked when I got the message from Google Reader but I changed over to Feedly right away. It's really easy to change over and easy to use.

  67. Hellooooooo Pearl!

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback on Feedly because that's the one I'm going try. I investigated it last night and it looks pretty easy to set up and import my feeds. I will most likely set it up sometime today and give it a go!

Thanks for stopping by, m'dear! Have a faaaabulous week!
