If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know how much I love the store, Anthropologie.

I could literally take up residence there and call it home.

I’m a very visual person, so I notice things and appreciate the thought, care and energy, that go into creating beautiful store and window displays.

Anthropologie has some of the most creative and striking displays I have ever seen in any retail store, because their displays draw you in and make you want to look closer at all the detail.

They understand the value of making things inventive and alluring to the eye; knowing that initial impressions are important. When customers enjoy what they see, they browse longer. And not only do they browse longer, but they come back.

And I have to say, whenever I walk into this store it's packed with customers.

They offer clothing, jewelry, housewares, bedding, candles, and much more.

Every couple of months, I relish taking my camera inside Anthropologie to see what delicious displays they come up with. I can spend 45 minutes browsing all four floor levels.

Such as it was on Tuesday, when I went display-hunting in their flagship store here in Philadelphia.

I like to visit Anthropologie as the seasons change because their displays will morph accordingly.

Those of you who used to follow my separate photography blog, when I had it two years ago, know that if I ever became a professional photographer, I would love to specialize in urban or catalog photography. Both of which I have a heartfelt passion for.

Today I would like to share some photos I took of my recent jaunt into Anthropologie. I love the variety of color in these displays because some are bright and bold, while others are soft and muted.

Please enjoy a stroll though one of my favorite establishments…

Extra photo:

This last image is not from Anthropology, but rather, Tiffany & Co.

I spotted it one day this week while walking down Walnut Street and stopped dead in my tracks to get a photo.

The theme is The Great Gatsby.

Talk about a faaaaaaaabulous window display!

Wishing you a GREAT weekend everyone!

  1. Great photos, Ron! I've never been to Anthropologie, but it looks like quite a place. I learn so much from reading your blog!

There used to be so many department stores around when I was growing up--Gimbels, May's, Abraham and Strauss--but they gradually shut down or were sold off.

Love the Gasby-themed Tiffany window. Makes me want to strap on my hip flask and Charleston my way over to the nearest speakeasy!

    Have a great weekend, buddy!

  2. Hey there Ron,
WOW; you aced these photos!! Congrats, hon. Honestly, they are awesome!!
I feel like I want to go and throw myself on that bed.Arrrggghh!!
I MUST stopover this place a next time. Finding a treasure that is not too heavy or bring back home
( Our own Anthropologie treasure from Philly).
I honestly hope that you will go into Urban or catalogue Photography on a more intensive level. You would be perfect at this!
I don't have (yet) the "thing" that gets my soul excited in Urban photography, except I love architecture. I still must get more brave when it comes to Urban portraits.
I am challenged when I have to take interior photos but challenges are about LEARNING.
Sending you big hugs down to Philly. xoxo

  4. Oh.MY. Can I just say these are phenomenal photos?! And enquiring minds wanna know HOW you take the photos without getting tossed outta the store or at least accosted with a bazillion questions. Seriously, they're amazing displays--someone had a flair for dressing up the store with an eye for detail. Because you're right--it's the detail that draws you in. You just want to keep looking. Despite that lamp getting my attention FIRST, it was the cute table it sat on (I love it!) and the funky chair in the back that I felt like I was peeking around the front display to see.
I'm not so sure that's about the display as much as it's about the man behind the camera.
I love the black planters--I'm a sucker for painted tin planters. NO, I don't need another one! (oh, but the black ones are soooooo cute!)

We don't have one of 'these' around here--darn that we don't. While I'm NOT a browse 'n shop kinda gal, this is one of those places that might make the exception.
That and the Tiffany window--I don't wanna SHOP there, I just wanna play with their bubbles. LOL Excellent photo of that window--and an excellent job of the display.
    Well done, sir.
And any time you wanna do another round of the four floors at the Anthropologie, take Barb with ya. LOL

  5. None of their stores are close to me, so I don't get to enjoy this feast for the eyes very often. I'm a visual person too and I love, love, love the color combinations they use. But I have to say, that monochromatic Tiffany's display is absolutely gorgeous!

  7. What a gorgeous store! It's one of those one would love to lounge about in. I'd never heard of this store before, so I guess they don't have any in my area.

  8. Is it really two years since your photo blog... how time flies. If ever I visited Philly I would HAVE to call in and see the stunning displays in Anthropologie. It is MY kind of shop. I literally drool over the elegance and uniqueness of such places. I was the same with Tiffany's. Popped in frequently when I was in NY. Anthropologie has the edge though. Love the first and last pictures. You really don't need a new camera, I mean how could you better what you already do?

    Have a hassle-free weekend.

  9. Hey there Rob!

    Thank you :)

I'm pretty sure you have an Anthropologie (or even more than one) in Manhattan. The one in Philly is their original flagship store, but I know they have one in Florida because of friend of mine who lives in Orlando shops there all the time. She LOVES it!

Ah yes, GIMBLES! We used to have one here in Philly, but as you said, it shut down. In fact, when I live in NYC, I had a job at the one there.

"Love the Gasby-themed Tiffany window. Makes me want to strap on my hip flask and Charleston my way over to the nearest speakeasy!"

  10. Wow Ron, these photos are gorgeous! The colors are are just amazing. And you're right about creating displays that lure you in and make you want to examine all the details because that's what I was doing as I was strolling through your photographs.

That first photo of the bed it incredible. I looks like the bed is sitting outdoors. And the fifth one down of the "Indian looking" tent is so intriguing. Love the colors!

And you're so right, that last one of Tiffany's is fabulous!

Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful weekend, Ron.

"I MUST stopover this place a next time. Finding a treasure that is not too heavy or bring back home."

Yes, the next time you and D are in Philly, I will take you there because not only will you enjoy the displays, but you will also love taking some photos. The stores sits right off of Rittenhouse, on Walnut and 18th.

"I don't have (yet) the "thing" that gets my soul excited in Urban photography, except I love architecture. I still must get more brave when it comes to Urban portraits."

Your talent for taking architectural photographs is just AWESOME! But I also love your outdoor (countryside) photographs as well. I think because I live in a city, I've developed a passion for urban photography. There is just so many wonderful things to photograph!

"I am challenged when I have to take interior photos but challenges are about LEARNING."

Me too. Especially when it comes to the lighting because my camera is somewhat limited to settings.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a glorious weekend!

HAHHHAHAAHA! Honestly, whenever I've been inside snapping photographs, no one has ever bothered me. I don't however take photographs with customers in them.

" Despite that lamp getting my attention FIRST, it was the cute table it sat on (I love it!) and the funky chair in the back that I felt like I was peeking around the front display to see."

    Isn't that lamp faaaaaaaabulous???

"I love the black planters--I'm a sucker for painted tin planters. NO, I don't need another one! (oh, but the black ones are soooooo cute!)"

Do you know what? That planter is actually an old tin BATH TUB!!!! I probably should have mentioned that. Isn't it COOL?

"We don't have one of 'these' around here--darn that we don't. While I'm NOT a browse 'n shop kinda gal, this is one of those places that might make the exception."

Yes, as you know, I'm not shopper either. I'm more into browsing the displays and visuals.

"That and the Tiffany window--I don't wanna SHOP there, I just wanna play with their bubbles. LOL Excellent photo of that window--and an excellent job of the display."

They are starting to open these stores all over the U.S. I know they have them in Florida because my dear friend, Diana, the friend I mentioned who has a son that is autistic, shops in the one located in Orlando. She LOVES this store.

" I'm a visual person too and I love, love, love the color combinations they use."

Yes, their website is sooooooo alluring as well.

If you ever come to Philly, I will take you there myself. And be sure to bring your NEW camera because you'll see LOTS of stuff to take photographs of.

" I was the same with Tiffany's. Popped in frequently when I was in NY. Anthropologie has the edge though."

I agree! I love the Tiffany's in NYC, but I'm not really into wearing jewelry, so Anthropologie is more my cup of tea.

"You really don't need a new camera, I mean how could you better what you already do?"

Aw thank you. The reason I would like a new camera is because I would like to learn more about using the IN-camera setting adjustments, rather than doing all my adjustments in post production.

Yes, that bed DOES look as thought it's sitting outdoors, you're right. And the tent REALLY caught my eye because of the vivid colors. I think it must be an outdoor cover for like a patio, or even the beach.

  24. We don't have an Anthropologie store here, but I'm fascinated by the creative displays you've photographed. How beautiful! Stunning and like you said, some bold colors amid some muted ones.

"When customers enjoy what they see, they browse longer. And not only do they browse longer, but they come back." YES!! Why don't more stores realize this and capitalize on it??

Ron, I'm in awe over the Tiffany window! Only a true artist could come up with something so magnificent.

Have a super weekend, my friend!

  25. I've never been to Anthropologie. Don't even know if we have any out here, to be honest. But it looks pretty cool. Kind of like a much more upscale version of Ikea.

May your weekend be filled with peace, joy, and prosperity, my friend!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey there Debbie!

Their original store is here in Philadelphia, but they are slowly branching out to more states. I know they have one in Florida because my friend shops there and LOVES it. She first discovered Anthropology while visiting me a few years ago and became addicted to it.

"YES!! Why don't more stores realize this and capitalize on it??"

I TOTALLY agree! Too many retail establishments work at getting customers to open up charge accounts and try to figure out ways to GET people to buy more, by pressuring their sales people to make HIGHER sales. But if they would only realize that if they created an environment that is visually attractive and relaxed, they would just naturally make more profit. I'm in the retail business, so I see what goes on behind the scenes and it truly bothers me. Pressuring customers, only pushes them away.

"Ron, I'm in awe over the Tiffany window! Only a true artist could come up with something so magnificent."

  28. Wowza Ron, these photo snaps are so awesome, dude! I took my time and looked at each photograph, just to see all the detail and thought that went into creating them.

You're right, presentation is what it's about. Some people think that first impressions are not important but they are. Obviously, Anthropology has done their marketing homework, which is why they are so successful. Quality marketing along with quality merchandise equals profit. And also good customer service.

The Great Gatsby was a movie about the roaring 20's (Mia Farrow and Robert Redford). Awesome movie! And the Tiffany window displayed nailed the theme!

I really like the things in Anthropologie but the last time I was in one had the worst customer service experience I've had in a long time. It's too long to explain here but suffice it to say that the punk manager had no idea how to handle an item that was placed in a sale section that was actually not supposed to be on sale. I won't go back there, well, at least not to that one location. Huge bummer.

Soooo sorry to hear about your experience with Anthropologie. OMG...I'm dying laughing at "the punk manger" because I can't even imagine the store here in Philly having a manger that is PUNK ROCK because that is so not the image they would ever want to give. It's much more conservative.

Thanks for stopping by, Jen! Have a FLAWLESS weekend!!!

  53. Actually, when I said punk I meant it more in that 1950's sort of way. He was flitting around like a hummingbird, darting from one rack to another looking totally disorganized. I picked out a cardigan that was on a rack with some shorts that said something to the effect that what was on the rack was 20% off. When the gal rang it up and the discount didn't come up she got this 20 year old manager who acted like I was a complete inconvenience. He told me the cardigans weren't on sale just the shorts. When I showed him the sign on the rack that made it seem like everything was on sale, he just waved his hand at me and said I was wrong. Then, he walked away. I was so pissed I made the woman at the register credit my card. They lost a sale and a customer. That's the long silly story.

Good for you, Jen!!! I would have done the same thing AND probably would have called their corporate office and made a complaint.

OMG...just reading about this guy and his lousy attitude made me pissed.

  55. Ron, I'm going to borrow your favorite word and say, faaaaaaabulous displays! And faaaaaaabulous photographs as well! You know, I'm not big shopper. As a matter of fact, I rarely go shopping unless I need to get something specifically. But just from looking at these photos, I think I would really enjoy browsing this store. I am a visual person as well, so I can really appreciate the creativity that went into making these displays.
