Isn’t it funny how whatever time period you were born in, you really didn’t notice or appreciate the style back then?

I was born in the 1950's and thought of it as the most boring decade when it came to fashion and style; whether it be the clothing, home décor, automobiles, or even the music that was popular back then.

For some reason, everything seemed so humdrum and flavorless.

Here is a photo of me when I was only a year old. And you can tell by the expression on my face how bored I was.

It looks like I'm thinking, "What the HELL am I doing here in the '50's?!?"

I guess that must be because we were in such a hurry to grow up and move on, that we bypassed it.

Well, the whole reason I decided to post this today is because last week I visited a women’s clothing store that specializes in vintage reproductions of the ‘50's fashion - Bettie Page.

And as I walked through the door, it was as though I had stepped over a magic threshold that transported me from 2013 to the 1950’s.

It literally felt like I was back there because the whole store is designed in the ‘50’s style – from the light fixtures, display cases, and photos on the walls. Even the music they play is from the ‘50’s.

And the cherry on the top is that all the women who work there are dressed from head to toe in ‘50’s fashion; including hair and makeup.

As I slowly made my way around the store, I began looking at all the merchandise they offered, when it suddenly HIT me.

Wow…the 1950’s were GREAT!

After I got home, I went online and started researching the fashion of the '50's. And what impressed me the most was that the clothing back then actually had a distinct and defining style.

Women’s attire was feminine, chic and sexy; flattering the female form.

And men’s attire was masculine, tailored and handsome; flattering the male form.

So as tribute to the 1950’s, I would like to take you on a drive back to the past.

Most of these images are recreations.

And this just goes to show how great style…never dies.

Rather, it has a way of being reincarnated.

Enjoy your trip...

From Mad Men - set in the late '50's and early '60's

Faaaaaaabulous dress and jacket

What a HANDSOME and SHARP look

From the movie Far From Heaven -set in the '50's

Yup, now when I look back on the 1950's, I can see how great it was!

And I wonder if people will look back to the fashion and style of today, and see them as GREAT?

Wait…what fashion? What style?

  1. I totally agree with you Ron!! Since we are the same age, I can go back to that time and remember my mom and dad wearing those same outfits...the cars! The hair and makeup remind me of my Barbie dolls!! I LOVED my Barbie dolls...we must have had a zillion of them between my sister and I ... we played with them for years!! I really loved it when my daughter was old enough for Barbie's and I got to enjoy it all over again. There is a store in Myrtle Beach similar to the one you have mentioned...it transported me right back...it was totally like Time Travel! What a hoot!! Love the pink appliances....My ex's grandmother had her entire kitchen done in pink with stainless steel countertops! Good memories!! The whole kitchen was lower than normal as she was very short. Just my size...loved it!! Ummm...yeah....today's kids have no style at all. NONE. Let's go back to the 50's!! Maybe I'll put the movie Grease on! Happy Monday! I love your posts! xo Jeanne

  2. Hellooooooo Jeanne!

OMG...I just this second finished publishing this post. You and I must be night owls!

" Since we are the same age, I can go back to that time and remember my mom and dad wearing those same outfits...the cars! The hair and makeup remind me of my Barbie dolls!!"

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Wasn't the fashion back then faaaaaabulous? And yes, I always wanted Barbie doll too! In fact, one of my readers actually bought and mailed me a Barbie doll last year. Now I can say I FINALLY have one!

"Love the pink appliances....My ex's grandmother had her entire kitchen done in pink with stainless steel countertops! Good memories!!"

Me too! LOVE the appliances! The colors they used were so bright and cheerful!

" Ummm...yeah....today's kids have no style at all. NONE. Let's go back to the 50's!!"

You said it, dear lady. NONE! And every time I see a pair of the those god-awful low-hanging pants, I want to SCREAM! In fact, just this afternoon I saw a GIRL walking around like that!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Jeanne. Have a smashing week!

X to you and the girlz!

  3. I am not a product of the 1950s but I do live the style. Pin up style from the 1950s is my favorite. From the clothes to the makeup. Its just absolutely gorgeous- nothing like the fashion of today. Also, love that you showed a picture of Mad Men, recently got into watching this show and I gotta say I am getting hooked! Hope you have a great week Ronnie!

  4. I've always loved the 1950s kitchen. Probably because we had the turquoise appliances growing up. And I LOVE retro phones. Have you ever been to Restoration Hardware? You would love it!

  5. 40's and 50's fashions were very elegant. Personally I prefer the 60's because that's when I was in my teens. :)

  6. Excellent post, Ron! I'm really not one to wallow in nostalgia, but I believe there was definite concern for quality back in the 1950s that we don't have today.
The clothes were well-made, not mass-produced Wal-Mart crap and people took pride in how they looked. Products were built to last. Now everybody's going for the gangsta look.
I think we were born in the wrong era!
Nice job, buddy, and I love that baby picture! Have a stylish week!

  7. Gosh, Ron, I'm really into reminiscing now. Psst don't tell anyone but I first got married in the 50s. I agree with everything you say, the fashions were smart, women were elegant, and men were handsome and well turned out. We were proud of our appearance, unlike today when anything goes, yes haha including the low slung trouser brigade. Even now I like things just right. I can't thank you enough for taking me on a tour of the good old days. Happy Monday x

  10. Oh Ron, what a GREAT post! I know of the store you speak of, Bettie Page, because I've been in the one in Las Vegas and had such a great time looking at the clothes. Even though I'm younger and didn't grow up back then, I have such an affinity for the 50's fashion and style. I also love the 40's.

You're so right, the fashion and style of today can't compare. Back then they had style. I love the photo of the blue dress. How beautifully feminine.

And that photo of you as a one year old is so cute!

    Have wonderful week, Ron!

" Pin up style from the 1950s is my favorite. From the clothes to the makeup. Its just absolutely gorgeous- nothing like the fashion of today."

Yes! And that is where the store, Bettie Page, stems from - the pin up style. They have a lot of stores around the country yet, they are branching out. It's faaaabulous store, you would love it.

"lso, love that you showed a picture of Mad Men, recently got into watching this show and I gotta say I am getting hooked!"

Because I don't watch TV or have cable, I've only seen clips of the show on You Tube and it LOVED what I saw. The style and fashion are awesome!

Weren't they the COOLEST? Love the colors and shape of the appliances - everything were sort of rounded; having almost a 'space age' look.

And yes! I HAVE been to Restoration Hardware and love it. There was a few of those stores in Florida. We don't have them here in Philly though :(

  23. The 50's were great times Ron. The best times ever to grow up in and a time when women were adored for their shapeliness. I would love to see the 50's and early 60's men and women back. They were also times of great labour saving inventions.

It's when the UK came alive, after WWII.

  24. Ron, that baby picture of you is priceless. I wasn't born back then, but I've seen old family photos of relatives and could see just how classy the style and fashion was. And the cars. Now those were cars!

" They were also times of great labour saving inventions.

Yes! There is a movie called, "Yanks" with Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave, which is set in that time period in the UK. It's a WONDERFUL movie!

  27. LOL! I've always kidded my children that the today's "music" is going to be hard be considered "classic rock" in 20 years. Funny how the good old days are only good when you look back on them after a decade or more. There was a quite a remarkable sense of style in the 50s. But, although well-dressed, that era came with it's fair share of cultural problems. And that last shot just makes me want to grab a stapler. Happy Monday to you too! Hope it's a good one.

Nor am I fond of that '50s kitchen you've shown us -- no microwave or dishwasher! And that phone?? Sorry, but give me my cell phone any day!

No, this post not about eliminating things. In fact, this post not about eliminating anything at all. It's about looking back and appreciating the style and fashion THEN, which is something I never did. I LOVE my jeans! And jeans were actually popular back then as well. And I love, love, love my microwave!!! The modern conveniences we have of today are wonderful (things like, dishwashers, microwaves, cell phones, computers, etc.) not doubt about that.

  35. Ah, now, you can't pick out the silliest things available now and use that as proof that there is no style. I think every era has really interesting/chic/appealing looks and really awful ones. I like the cut of many '50's dresses (and even have one style like that myself), but my god, their undergarments were hideous! I will say I wish we were a little more inclined to dress up - I love wearing dresses!

On the other hand, when I look at '50's photos, I think about how difficult it was to be anything other than a straight, white male. There was a serious power imbalance then and I wouldn't live in that time for anything.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hey Secret Agent Woman!

"Ah, now, you can't pick out the silliest things available now and use that as proof that there is no style."

"I will say I wish we were a little more inclined to dress up - I love wearing dresses!"

Thank you! And that's really the point of this post...back then people were more inclined to dress up. When I look at how some people go to the theater and see a play or musical, I gasp at how they dress. Like for a picnic.

"I think about how difficult it was to be anything other than a straight, white male."

And don't get me started on Audrey Hepburn. That there's one classy, beautiful woman whose beauty will never goes out of style, and she definitely turns my nickel...

  38. ron i'm in love with that blue dress. i would probably wear it without the jacket, but it has my name written all over it. at least I think it does. ron, you can compare caveman clothes to what some people call style and in some cases the caveman would be better dressed. i don't know what the heck is up with the last few decades and their sense of style. i watch the jeffersons every morning and i noticed how everyone was always dressed in a suit, dress or or nice pant suit. nothing like what we see today. i'm not an entire 50's lover, i don't know much about the 50's, but looking at the pics, they had style and pride. i bet that store is awesome. would be great to visit actually with everyone dressed from another time.

oh man, i can't stand to look at what people have on today. i do a lot of screaming in my car and gasping, pointing and whatnot.

"you can compare caveman clothes to what some people call style and in some cases the caveman would be better dressed. i don't know what the heck is up with the last few decades and their sense of style."

HA! Love it...CAVEMAN clothes!!! But I'll tell ya, that's not far from the truth.

"i watch the jeffersons every morning and i noticed how everyone was always dressed in a suit, dress or or nice pant suit. nothing like what we see today."

This era is basically void of a defining style. And anything I DO think is stylish, is a replication of styles from past era's.

  53. Funny how when we moved into our house it felt like we were being transported wayyyy back. Built in the 20s... typical old bungalow.
The decor was basic... old wallpaper, hard wood floors. The kitchen was 'updated' to about the 50s-70s. Speckled kitchen floor and a RED countertop. The stove was probably from the 50s, too. We did keep things that way for a while but eventually had to upgrade a bit. Designing something now that has a 50's look is different than having 50's things... from the actual 50's. LOL They are in such need of repair. LOL
I probably wouldn't like the form fitting clothing of that era on myself. But looking at it on other women is nice. And Bettie Page... she was so sexy. Looked good in and OUT of everything!

    OMG, Mary...that housed sounded AWESOME!

That's the thing I really love having moved back east. Being such an older part of American history, some of the buildings here in Philly STILL have things like the original hardwood floors and glass door knobs from the 30's - like my apartment building.

Yeah, you're right! Nothing can compare to HOW it was designed and made back then.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I saw the movie that was made about her several years ago. WOW...she was something else, wasn't she?

Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

  55. Ron - I know I'm really late to this party, but just wanted to say I love every single one of these pictures. People really were put together, weren't they? I think the 50s should have been my era. Instead, I got the 80s. Ugh.

ps. I adore your childhood picture. "What am I doing here?" Har!

Enjoy this perfect weekend we're getting. This is our weather, Ron!

  56. Hellooooooooo Kathy!

No, you're not late for the party, you're right on time :)

" People really were put together, weren't they?"

They sure were. But it's so funny how you don't realize it until much later in life. When I look back on that era now, I go WOW!

Much thanks for stopping by, girl. Have a faaaaabulous weekend!

  57. What a fab post Ron. I was a baby in the 50's too so this was a lot of fun to see. I LOVE 50's cars most of all, I want a Thunderbird from that era, if $$ allows it some day.

  58. When you compare the clothing styles of the '50s to those of today, you make a strong point, Ron. However, I'm not totally sure I'd like to eliminate everything (especially jeans!) Nor am I fond of that '50s kitchen you've shown us -- no microwave or dishwasher! And that phone?? Sorry, but give me my cell phone any day!

Thanks for this Time Capsule -- and you're right about one thing. The guy with the hat sitting on the car with the fins DOES look sharp!
