Post updates by email:

I’ve shared a lot of peculiar things about myself on this blog, so why not share one more?

I don’t like wearing anything other than clothing on my body. And I prefer the style to be simple, with no frills that draw too much attention to what I’m wearing. And definitely no busy patterns.

I like my clothing to be almost subliminal – like it’s there, but you don’t really notice it.

Also, I don’t wear a single piece of jewelry – not a ring, bracelet or necklace. Hell, I don’t even wear a wrist watch. And believe it or not, I'm never late.

Wearing jewelry or a watch only means that it’s more stuff I need to put on in the morning, and then take off at the end of the day.

However, there was a time when I did wear jewelry. I wore a gold initial ring that my parents gave me for Christmas one year, and I also wore a thin gold chain with an Italian horn to protect me from the evil eye. At one point I owned a Hawaiian puka shell necklace and thought I was the COOLEST because they were the rage. And then in the late '80's, I got one of my ears pierced and wore a small gold hoop earring. Oh, and I also worn a watch. It was just a plain Timex with a simple black leather band, nothing fancy.

Similar examples

But it seems the older I got, the less interested I became in wearing jewelry.

I could walk into Tiffany or Van Cleef & Arpels and spot a piece of jewelry for a man that I thought was exquisite, yet not have the slightest urge to purchase it. Jewelry has never been one of my buying passions.

That being said, I still have great admiration for it.

In fact, I love seeing jewelry on others and will often notice it on both women and men.

And I especially appreciate quality handmade jewelry because, well, it’s handmade.

Furthermore, I dig taking photographs of jewelry. Sometimes I will walk into a store and take pictures of their jewelry displays, and other times I will take them through a store window.

For as much as I don’t wish to wear jewelry, it is something that always catches my eye, especially if it's unique and unusual.

And I like a wide variety of styles, whether it be costume and artsy or tailored and classic. It depends on the person who's wearing it and how they carry it off.

Here are some photographs I took this year of various jewelry displays.

Please enjoy…

You know, perhaps one of these days I will go back to wearing jewelry.

But if I do, it will be simple; nothing frilly to draw too much attention to what I'm wearing.

Simple, like this...

Okay, I admit it, the pinky ring on his left hand is a bit frilly because it distracts from the TIARA.

Have a GEM of a Monday everyone!

  1. Bwahahaha!! OMG! I SO needed that laugh Ron! You were perusing in my favorite store again! It is kind of funny...I just love wandering around in that store and checking out all of their gorgeous displays. But,I have never bought anything in there! I always ask if they mind if I take pictures and they are always gracious about it. Sending you lots and lots of good karma! Xo Jeanne

  2. Haha this was really a fun post! I really love jewelry but I am just too lazy for it. I own plenty and I love buying more but I remember to put it on for like two days and then I forget all over again. I guess I am just not very fashionable. But I certainly appreciate it on others!

  3. I really love jewelry, but it has to be simple. I've tried wearing bigger pieces, but it always looks ridiculous on me. I wear my watch 24/7 though. It's a silver/gold Tommy Hilfiger that goes with everything. The only thing I never wear are earrings because I never got pieced ears. Shocking, huh?

Remember Swatch watches? I LOVED those things! I'm also hoping pearls make a comeback because I have some nice necklaces I'd like to wear again.

My husband wore his wedding band for one year and then told me he couldn't handle it anymore. He used to spin that thing around like crazy all day. He's not a jewelry person either.

  4. Oh Ron. I can't believe how similar we are.

I used to wear jewellery too. I started with silver, in the 60's, because it was most fashionable. Then came the flower power, hand made jewellery. I then moved on to gold jewellery. Now, all I wear is a few of my small rings. Everything else has been sold or sits in a box, without seeing the light of day. I too, no longer even wear a watch.

I love those photographs, but that top one is irritating me, because one of the strands is hooked where it didn't ought to be :)

  5. heheheh, ron. i did notice your admiration to jewelry when we were in the city. what's funny is that i like jewelry, but i really don't shop for it. i can't even tell how how i've come about my small collection. gifted maybe? i do need to wear at least a necklace and earrings, nothing more. i like to accessorize and complement whatever i'm wearing, but nothing too flashy.

    AhHAhHAHHAHhah!!

Actually, I do NOT like jewelery on men. It's usually very tacky. Except for good watches.

But I do LOVE women's jewelery.

Sadly, I only have ONE real piece of jewelery - a diamond encrusted butterfly, from my mother's mother, my gramma Manga. And I only wear it on super special occasions.

The rest of my jewelery is fairly simply. My 'daily' bling consists of one silver ring (worn on my left index finger) and a pair of silver hoops. Sometimes I add a necklace or jazz things up - but not every day.

  7. Nice photos, Ron. I'd think you'd look great in a tiara. I'm not much for jewelry myself, aside from an earring. Although I could really use that horn to ward off the evil eye! Have a diamond-studded week, buddy, and take care!

  8. I have lots of jewellery - good stuff and costume, actually too much because I don't get to wear it all. I always wear earrings (I have pierced ears), and a watch and when we go out in the evening I usually wear a bracelet too and maybe a necklace. MWM wears a gold chain on his neck and one on his wrist oh and his wedding ring, well we both wear a wedding ring of course.

  9. Ron, I laughed out loud at that last photo and final line about the tiara! I love wearing jewelry and have to contain myself when I see it because I will buy and buy. It's like an addition. My girlfriends love me because they never buy it themselves, they just borrow it from me. I have a lot costume/fun pieces I enjoy wearing, and also a few nice pieces of fine jewelry. I like both silver and gold.

Beautiful photographs! You make the jewelry look so enticing. My favorites are the 5th Avenue Jeweler and the two from Tiffany.

Fun post, Ron. Have a wonderful week!

  10. You know what they say, Ron, You can't improve on the gem in the suit. I used to wear jewellery, the indiscreet sort, a subtle diamond on a thin chain, that sort of thin, but now I never think to put it on. Older and lazier, I think. I never craved for big bulky stuff or the costume jewellery. I don't mind men wearing it so long as it IS discreet but I cannot stand seeing a man with earrings and flashy rings. Yuk!

    Have a blessed day.

  11. Ron, I had a Hawaiian puka shell necklace too. I remember saving up my money to buy one because most of friends I had them, so of course I had to have one too. I look at old pictures of me now wearing it and laugh. Like you, I'm not a big jewelry type guy. I do wear a watch though because if I didn't I'd never know what time it is, but I'm still late!

Love the last photo. You are too funny, dude!

  12. Goooood morning Jeanne!

Don't you LOVE that store??? I just went in a few days ago and saw that they had changed all their summer displays into Fall and they looked AWESOME! I spent almost 45 minutes looking around and taking photos.

" I always ask if they mind if I take pictures and they are always gracious about it."

OMG, I don't even ask, I just snap away. I know they must have seen me taking pictures, but no one has ever said anything :)

Thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Have a faaaaaabulous week!

  14. Hey there Bijoux!

"I really love jewelry, but it has to be simple. I've tried wearing bigger pieces, but it always looks ridiculous on me."

Yes, that's I am feel too. Anything I've ever worn was simple. Big stuff (like a big watch) just overpowers me.

"The only thing I never wear are earrings because I never got pieced ears. Shocking, huh?"

No, it doesn't shock me because TWO of my friends have never gotten their ears pierced as well. I remember one year buying them earrings for Christmas, but they were pierced earrings. I had never noticed they both didn't have pieced ears - HA!

"Remember Swatch watches? I LOVED those things! I'm also hoping pearls make a comeback because I have some nice necklaces I'd like to wear again."

Yup...I do remember Swatch watches. In fact, they sell them in the store I work because they are still a very popular watch. I ADORE pearls. And see TONS of women wearing them. The thing I love about pearls is that you can wear them with a dressy outfit, but also with something casual. Pearls go with everything.

"My husband wore his wedding band for one year and then told me he couldn't handle it anymore. He used to spin that thing around like crazy all day"

HA! He sounds just like me!!!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a most excellent week!

  15. Hey there Babs!

"Oh Ron. I can't believe how similar we are."

    OMG...how funny is that!!!

Now see, when I was a kid, gold was very popular, but I actually preferred the look of silver more. So when I got a bit older, I slowly started migrating over to silver.

" I too, no longer even wear a watch."

I stopped wearing a watch YEARS ago because when battery operated watches came to be, I discovered that there is something in my skin (some chemical) that breaks the batteries in watches. I could wear a watch for about two weeks, but then the battery would suddenly die. Isn't that strange? So, I just stopped wearing a watch and don't miss having one.

"I love those photographs, but that top one is irritating me, because one of the strands is hooked where it didn't ought to be :)"

HAHAHHAAHA! I know, I should have flipped that strand over before I took the photo. I never even noticed it when I took the photo.

  17. Ron, I LOVE this (of course, I love jewelry -- what woman doesn't? -- and you know I make many of my own bracelets and earrings).

So you had one of those Italian "good luck" horns, too? My parents bought me one (had three tiny diamonds in it), but it vanished during a home robbery years ago. Sure wish I could find a replacement.

The guy with the tiara -- what a HOOT! I can understand not wanting to look like a walking jewelry store, but as you said, there's something so interesting about tasteful jewelry adorning one's body.

My late dad always thought a Timex was the best brand of watch. Why pay for a Rolex, he said, when a Timex does the same thing??

    Enjoy your Monday!

"- a diamond encrusted butterfly, from my mother's mother, my gramma Manga. And I only wear it on super special occasions."

OMG...that sounds beautiful! I love diamonds because like pearls, they're classic.

"My 'daily' bling consists of one silver ring (worn on my left index finger) and a pair of silver hoops. Sometimes I add a necklace or jazz things up - but not every day."

  27. I started wearing a watch when I was in 3rd grade. And quit about 5 years ago, when I started carrying a cell phone with me everywhere. I just feel that there's no need for a watch in this day and age - if you need to know the time, it's going to be there in front of you SOMEWHERE. (Oddly enough, whenever I did wear a watch, I was always the guy strangers approached and asked, "Excuse me, do you have the time?" Weirdest thing ever. Kind of annoying, too).

In just a few days though, I'll be wearing a ring again! :)

  37. Hey Ron.
I have a gold hoop earrings also, but that's the only actual decorative jewellery I ever wear.
However, I absolutely cannot go without a watch. Not because I am desperate to know the time at any given moment, but because I've always worn one and I feel REALLY weird without it. (My arm actually gets a strange twitchy sensation if I go any length of time without a watch. Last time I had to have it repaired, I even went as far as buying a cheap £5 substitute, just so I had something on my wrist)
Ok, so now we've established that I'm a weirdo, how about you get someone to stand inside Tiffany's and take a picture of you recreating the famous "coffee and Danish" picture that the lovely Audrey made so iconic.
I'm sure you'd look great in a little black Versace number.

  41. What a great post Ron (as always)!
And what a treat it is to stop by here. :<)
I love jewelry but I agree, sometimes less can definitely be more.
Loved all these dazzling choices you've shared here.
To share a funny/nostalgic story about my mom. She LOVED and I do mean loved, jewelry in a big way and IMO, often went a bit over the top, when it came to wearing a lot of different pieces at one time. She was a sharp dresser and a beautiful woman (all her life!) but on the topic of jewelry, she did tend to get a bit carried away.
So....back to the present, I found myself, just yesterday, piling on a bit more in the "jewel" dept. than I normally do and mentioned to my hubby how I seem to be taking a cue from my mom, finally in this regard. Smiles all around here and I left it all on: bracelet, earrings, necklace, amulet pouch. And a kiss sent up to my dear Mom in heaven.
Heh, that might not sound like overkill but I'm a less is more jewelry person usually so that was a big load for me! ;<)
Ok, I'm done. Sorry, got a bit carried away there.
Keep them coming Ron, you always bring a smile to my day. :<)

  45. THANK YOU for abandoning the puka shell necklace. I was fixed up with a guy about 10 years ago and he was STILL wearing one. And not ironically! Which, by the way, is my new favorite term.
I used to wear a lot of jewelry, too. If nothing else, I must wear a watch because of my obsession to know the time 24 hours a day.
LOVE Anthropologie! I just adore the way they merchandise. It's fantastic.
The tiara? I think you could pull it off. Go for it!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG...he was still wearing one TEN years ago??! Holy cow, I didn't even think they were in existence any longer. He must have got it on Ebay!!!!

Isn't Anthropologie the BOMB? I could spend hours in that store just looking everything.

  47. Ron, my main jewelry addiction is earrings. I have so many pairs that I can't possibly wear them in this lifetime. I really should try selling some of them on E-bay. But then I would end up taking that money and buying more. LOL.

  48. HA!

Funny you mentioned E-bay because a good friend of mine sells so much on that website. She buys things on sale and then resells them for a much higher price and makes a killing!

Katherine, that is so cool! I've never heard of St. Christopher surfer patron said before!?

"So I have tons of dead watches in my drawer!"

Thank you! So do I!!!!!! And that's why I've gotten so used to not wearing one.

  50. I only wear my mother's old college high school ring and a silver necklace that has a St. Christopher surfer patron saint medal. That's it!

I love watches too but the batteries wear out and I never get around to getting new ones put in. So I have tons of dead watches in my drawer!
