Post updates by email:

Last year at this time I was in Florida, and had missed working my very first Black Friday in twentysomething years of being in retail. And I have to say, it felt VERY odd. But I also have to say, it felt VERY good.

However, this year I’m working it again.

In fact, just about the time when you will be reading this post, I will be AT work in the midst of it, and probably wishing I could be here rather than there.

But hey, that’s all part of being in retail – Black Friday.

The store in which I work opened last night at 8 PM, but I declined to work on Thanksgiving Day.

Yup, I declined. Because when working in retail starts to interfere with a day of giving thanks, that’s where I draw the line. Customers have from now until December 24th to shop, so I don't think they need to shop ON Thanksgiving Day.

And to be perfectly honest with you, if I wasn’t in retail, you wouldn’t see me anywhere NEAR a store today.

But alas…I’ll be there with a smile painted on my face and acting all sorts of HAPPY and JOVIAL. Because after all, I used to be an actor, so it’s time to act as if.

Therefore, I would like you guys and gals to imagine me standing behind a counter and ACTING like I have all the patience in the world, while responding to questions like:

“What are you going to give me if I buy this from you?”
“Do I get a discount if I by two?”
“WHY can’t you give me a discount?”
“Do I get a free gift?”
“Do I get TWO free gifts if my sister and I split the cost of this bottle of perfume?”
“Does this free handbag come in a different color?”

It's during Black Friday, when I think I should win an Oscar award for best performance in a drama/comedy/horror film...

-The Return of the Living Black Friday Hell

-Black Friday Zombies

-Faces of Black Friday

Here is a short video clip I created, giving you some insight on a few of the customers I wait on and what I go through. And this isn’t just on Black Friday, but most days.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE what I do or I wouldn’t do it. However, like with any job…there’s the HELL.

Enjoy…

Have a spectacular weekend everyone!
X

Note: I will be going into work early today, so I'll be responding to comments and visiting your fabulous blogs later tonight or tomorrow. Thank you for your understanding and patience…x

  1. LOL on the video! I remember those days! Though I always thought December 26th was THE worst day ever to work. Returns and people thinking that everything in the store should be marked down to 80 percent off! Get a life, people!

Hope your day wasn't toooooo horrible. Open up some red wine when you get back!

  2. Brilliant work, Ron! This post and video should be required reading/viewing for all the holiday shopping commandos.

"Because when working in retail starts to interfere with a day of giving thanks, that’s where I draw the line."

Good for you! I think it's a very sad commentary on our society when we have people who can't even stop their manic shopping sprees long enough to give thanks for what they already have!

I am definitely praying for you, buddy! Get through this day and then come home and relax! Have a great weekend!

  3. Ron, that video was hilarious! I showed it to one of the girls I work with and she said you're crazy, but in a good way. She laughed too! How did you make that video?

I have compassion for you today because I know what hell it is in retail on Black Friday. I'm not going anywhere near a mall until next week, because I can't stand being in big crowds with of bunch of crazed shoppers. And I don't care how good the sales are, it's just not worth the aggravation. I do a lot of my shopping about mid-December because I can find sales without the big crowds.

I'm glad to hear you declined working yesterday because it's outrageous that stores opened on Thanksgiving Day.

Hope you had a wonderful turkey day. Have a wonderful weekend, Ron xo

  4. ROFLMAO! That video was very funny, Ron. Funny to the point of making me laugh out loud.

I don't envy you working today. I hate shopping and I definitely hate it when stores are crowded.

    Peace, dude!

  6. HaHaHa, Ron -- you are so clever! I don't envy you, having to work on Black Friday. When I was a journalist, I had to, too, and I'm telling you, it was tough writing the same ole story only with different characters and making it interesting!

Retail folks must be earning their halos on this day, if customers are as inane as you've described (and I have NO DOUBT they are!). Why does anybody think they can put parameters on a FREE gift? Different color. Indeed!

Hope you survive with your sense of humor intact!

  7. Yes, you are so clever Ron. Loved reading this post.
Black Friday is not quite the 'big deal' here in Canada that it is in the USA, but that's starting to change too.
I like what you said about declining to work on Thanksgiving. Very good reason why not to. I think when we 'take a stand' like this, we make people think.
Hope your Thanksgiving Day was wonderful! :<)

  8. i LOVED LOVED LOVED the video ron. btw, does this free red handbag come in any other color? hahahhahaha. i totally would not be able to work in retail. i have a smart, sarcastic mouth and i would not be able to hide my displeasure.

like you did yesterday, i have been in the house. my body needs a rest and i don't need any stuff. so no shopping for me.

enjoy the weekend and yes, i will pray for you.

  9. Ron, it was really funny! And good insight into human nature. Why anyone thinks if they can't get one free gift that doesn't rule out getting two free gifts is beyond me. But people do it! Some people really do need logic chips installed in their brains that would freeze their mouths in mid sentence.

I can kind of understand supermarkets and convenience stores staying open on holidays if they have employees who don't mind working on those days. But shopping? Oh please. And people say I have no life.

I'll be praying for you today and throughout this holiday retail season because I know it's got to be rough. And I'm glad to hear you declined working yesterday. More people should do that so that retailers CAN'T be open on certain holidays.

Rest up and stay well, Ron! Have a great weekend!

  12. Hey there Bijoux!

" I remember those days! Though I always thought December 26th was THE worst day ever to work. Returns and people thinking that everything in the store should be marked down to 80 percent off! Get a life, people!"

You're so right, December 26th can be just as bad as Black Friday for the reasons you stated. I've been pretty lucky over the years to not get too many returns in my line, but it's still aggravating because many of the returns come from other stores, which are deducted from MY figures, even though I didn't sell them.

"Open up some red wine when you get back!"

HA! Yup...that's EXACTLY what I'm going to do!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super weekend!

    HA! Great idea, Rob!!!!!

"I think it's a very sad commentary on our society when we have people who can't even stop their manic shopping sprees long enough to give thanks for what they already have!"

TOTALLY agree! Which is why I declined to work. Retailers perpetuate this, so it's really their fault. But I refuse to work on certain holidays in retail - Thanksgiving being one of them.

Much thanks for stopping by, buddy. And yes, I'm just going to relax tonight with a nice glass of wine and just chill. My feet are killing me.

    Have a fantabulous weekend!

  14. Hola Denise!

Thank you. I had so much fun making this little video clip.

"I showed it to one of the girls I work with and she said you're crazy, but in a good way."

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Please tell her, yes...I AM CRAZY!!!!

I made the video on my laptop computer using the software on my camcorder, then I uploaded the music and edited into the video on Windows Live Movie maker.

"I'm not going anywhere near a mall until next week, because I can't stand being in big crowds with of bunch of crazed shoppers. And I don't care how good the sales are, it's just not worth the aggravation. I do a lot of my shopping about mid-December because I can find sales without the big crowds."

You are soooooooooooo smart, girl! Mid-December is the perfect time to shop because the crowds seem to die down a bit, just before the pick up again as it gets closer to Christmas.

" it's outrageous that stores opened on Thanksgiving Day."

I agree, which is WHY I declined to work.

Much thanks for stopping by, girl. Have a STELLAR weekend!

Ha! Glad you had a laugh, buddy. I had so much fun making this video. I did it yesterday afternoon.

"I don't envy you working today. I hate shopping and I definitely hate it when stores are crowded."

You know, for being someone who is in retail, I hate to shop too. I seem to shop in spurts, then won't shop for months and months. I like to go into a store; get what I need; then leave. I'm a very fast shopper and don't like crowds.

Thanks much for stopping by, buddy! Have a terrific weekend!

Yes, I can see why that was tough. I had no idea you were a journalist. How COOL is that!!!! You are so talented - a web designer, journalist, and blogger! You GO, girl!

"Why does anybody think they can put parameters on a FREE gift? Different color. Indeed!"

It BLOWS me away about that because the handbags are a FREE gift, it's ONE gift that comes in ONE color! Sometimes I will politely tell the customer, "If you're looking for a handbag to suit your desire, then go the handbag department and BUY one." HA!

"Black Friday is not quite the 'big deal' here in Canada that it is in the USA, but that's starting to change too."

Yes, I've been noticing that these past couple of years. Various other countries are starting to do just like us Americans when it comes to the holidays. Everything is getting so commerical.

" Very good reason why not to. I think when we 'take a stand' like this, we make people think."

Amen! Which is why I declined to work. I was given the option of whether to work or not, so it wasn't like I was forced to do it. I'm actually a vendor, not a store employee, so I have more freedom of choice. But even if I did work for the store, I wouldn't work on Thanksgiving Day.

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a lovely weekend!

Yes, I know exactly how you feel because my brother is a chief in a restaurant, so this is a very busy time of the year for him. He also lives in Florida, which is their ON season (with snowbirds), so Florida is very populated right now.

Oh Val, you have NO IDEA how hard it is for me to keep my mouth shut sometimes. There have been times when I just walked away from a customer because I was afraid of what was going to come out of my mouth - HA!

"like you did yesterday, i have been in the house. my body needs a rest and i don't need any stuff. so no shopping for me."

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I had so much fun making it yesterday.

"Some people really do need logic chips installed in their brains that would freeze their mouths in mid sentence."

    HA! David, I LOVED that!!!!!

The thing about free gifts is that they have gotten so out of hand because people believe that because they purchase TWO items, they should be intitled to TWO gifts, when the sign clearly states: ONE GIFT WITH A PURCHASE. So do you know what they do? They buy one thing, then come back a few minutes later and make another purchase to get another gift.

"I can kind of understand supermarkets and convenience stores staying open on holidays if they have employees who don't mind working on those days. But shopping? Oh please."

TOTALLY agree with you! Places like hotels, movie theaters, convenient stores, yes. But retail stores? No.

  24. I stay away from stores this time of year. I don't like blood sport. My husband is in retail and has told a horror story or two. I think you and he deserve a purple heart for dealing with such rude, deranged people. I'm surprised the store doesn't give you body armor.

  27. You're far too gracious...the holiday happens at the same time, EVERY YEAR. There are 360 days of shopping (minus 4 for holiday observances, if we must). People oughta be a bit ashamed of all this 'gray Thursday' crap. Niccceeee...giving it a name doesn't change the fact that it's THANKSGIVING. And Black Friday....is just about the retailer, regardless of how they o sell you that it's all about the shopper. Seriously, shop year round for the holidays--people appreciate things you've snagged during the spring sales. And you don't have to contend with shoppers who've left their brains and manners home.

The video was brilliant of course. What a clever fella you are!!

I can remember one year...my BOSS had to walk away because I had made a rather ummmm...."off color" comment so to speak!! She walked away because she was laughing so hard she thought she was going to DIE!! I believe it had something to do with lip gloss...well, let's leave it at that. 29. Good morning, Ron.

I guess now Black Friday is over you and other retail workers are sighing with relief. I noticed one or two stores here calling it Black Friday. Not sure why when we don't celebrate a Thanksgiving Day. Or are they just copy cats! I do try to keep away from the stores at this time of year. If I do go I get there really early before the crowds wake up.... and I never, ever ask for freebies. Happy weekend to you, my friend.

Yes, I have noticed too that more and more countries are taking on the same thing, even though Thanksgiving Day is not celebrated there. It's probably just a 'retail thing' overall.

" I do try to keep away from the stores at this time of year. If I do go I get there really early before the crowds wake up.... and I never, ever ask for freebies."

  33. I feel for you, Ron. And wholeheartedly applaud your decision to decline working on Thanksgiving Day. There's been a lot of backlash lately and talk of boycotting stores that are open on that day...sadly, in the past two years that seems to have become the norm. I hate it. It is all very weird to me. I have never heard of free gifts or discounts when purchasing anything, let alone from a beauty department of a store! The only places we can sometimes barter, is in the large outlets for electrical goods, and even then it is only a small discount for spending several hundred pounds with them. We certainly are living in a 'want something for nothing' world now.

  36. Hiya Babs!

"It is all very weird to me. I have never heard of free gifts or discounts when purchasing anything, let alone from a beauty department of a store!"

Yes, i think it's more of an "American thing." Free gifts started many years ago in the cosmetic/skincare/fragrance industry by Estee Lauder. However, over the years it's turned into a nightmare because now EVERYONE expects it. My company doesn't really do 'free gifts' so it hard to compete.

  39. ha ha ha ha!!!! You're such a nut!!!

Lisa picked up a couple of things at the cosmetic counter a couple of weeks ago and it happened to be during some sort of a promotional event for that particular vendor. She didn't know about it ahead of time, just lucky timing on her part. When the girl gathered up her purchases she then realized they were out of whatever the giveaway item was. She started to apologize and offered up an alternative. Lisa stopped her mid-sentence and told her there was no need to apologize and if there was something offered for free it was just a bonus and she'd be more than happy with anything, but it wasn't really necessary at all. The girl was so flabbergasted that Lisa was so nice instead of pitching a fit about it, she ended up giving her extra freebies. Lisa couldn't believe it.

Shortly after, Lisa observed another woman who nearly had a stroke because they didn't have anymore of the whatever it was freebie they were supposed to have.

Unbelievable how some people can act like three year olds!!!!

I don't get into the big material Christmas that society tosses at us. I won't make many purchases and the ones I do will most likely be online...bahumbug! 48. Oh man, I actually ventured out to the local mall this Friday, and it was chaos. I had to get to the Apple store because they were giving out $75 gift cards, so I put on a brave face and set forth with Tyler in tow. Luckily the salespeople were cool and rolling with the punches. I was in and out in ten minutes with a new iPad for the folks. Lemme tell ya, those salespeople are doings Gods work this week, and have stronger constitutions than I.

  49. Ron, I watched the video again when I made me last comment on your previous post. I laughed out loud again!

"Tank you...tank you very much...tank you."

  50. You will never catch me in, or even NEAR, any stores on Black Friday. And my deepest sympathies to ANYONE working retail that day!!

  52. I'm not a Black Friday shopper. There is NOTHING in a store that will get me there dumb o'clock in the morning. And to open on Thanksgiving night is simply the height of commercial greed. What's next? Opening for those after-Christmas sales on Christmas night? Shameful!! But I know some people thrive on that sort of shopping experience. And the Oscar goes to.......... :-)

You know, I never thought about that, but I bet eventually the stores will be open ON Christmas day. Shameful and pitiful!
