Post updates by email:

As most of my longtime blogging amigos know, I have a fascination with doors. In fact, about a year ago I shared this post with some photos.

Since I've had a lot of free time this month, being on a work hiatus, I took my camera out into the city and snapped doors.

I honestly can't tell you why I'm drawn to certain doors, other than they speak to me in some way.

They say, "Hey Ron...get over here and take my picture. Pronto!"

I guess it's a feeling or mood that a particular door has.

And Philadelphia, being such an old city, has some amazing doors with a lot of character. And what I love about them is that they seem to contain a powerful historical energy, which you can actually feel when you look at them.

You feel the past, and can't help but wonder how many people from generations gone by have walked over their thresholds.

It's funny because when I lived in this city as a youngster, I never really appreciated the American history that stems from Philadelphia. I suppose as a child you think, "Yeah right, George Washington, Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross and William Penn...yawn...who cares?"

Yet as an adult, you see it completely different. Like, "Wow...this is so cool!"

So, allow me to share some doors that I found alluring. And please take note to how some look fresh and renewed, while others look raw and worn. And oddly enough, I find the raw and worn doors the most fascinating and feel-provoking.

I would like to dedicated this post to my UK friend, Valerie, who shares my love of doors.

X ya, Valerie!

Please enjoy...

  1. Some of those doors are really nice and makes you want to take a peek into what's behind them and who lives there. Years ago, there was a program called 'Behind the Keyhole', where the camera's would show you around someone's home and you had to guess who the home belonged to. It was always a celebrity, but it was fascinating.
I love the last door, it's so different and unique.

Love these photos, Ron! You can almost feel the history coming off them!

I once met a man from Philadelphia and he told me that when he was growing up people used to take a special pride in their doors to their homes.

And you're right about this history aspect. As we get older, we really appreciate the stories behind these special locations.

Great post, buddy! Have a great week and keep knocking on those doors!

  3. They are all so beautiful, but I especially like 321. You don't find such old, interesting doors in the suburbs.

  4. My favourite doors are the old-rustic doors like #5 and #9.
I am discovering more of my contacts engaged in doorophilia.

I typed that in Google to see if there was some one else who thought of that term and guess what: http://doorphilia.tumblr.com/

Anyway, next time I travel to the Middle-East and India I must remember you guys and take pictures of doors and other object there. But first I need to remember. Heh.

  5. Lovely post Ron. I think I'm picking number four as my favourite.
Not only great pictures, but a new favourite phrase too; I shall be using "feel provoking" as soon as I can crowbar it into a sentence.

Now to finish on some music.
    Take it away Jim...

  6. Beautiful photographs, Ron! And the way you posted them makes each one look so grand. I think my favorites are 1, 4, 5, and the last one. The last one almost looks like a door into a magical land! And it goes perfect with that quote.

I miss the rustier look of the north east. And the rich history.

Have a wonderful week, Ron x

  7. Hey there Rum Punch!

"and makes you want to take a peek into what's behind them and who lives there."

HA! Exactly. And I feel the same way!

"Years ago, there was a program called 'Behind the Keyhole', where the camera's would show you around someone's home and you had to guess who the home belonged to. It was always a celebrity, but it was fascinating."

    Oh wow...that sounds SO cool!

"I love the last door, it's so different and unique."

That was one of the last doors I took a photograph of yesterday. The door is located down one of the small cobblestone streets here in Philly. And when I saw spotted it, like you, I thought it so different and unique.

Much thanks for stopping by, buddy. Have an awesome week!

  8. Hey there Rob!

"I once met a man from Philadelphia and he told me that when he was growing up people used to take a special pride in their doors to their homes."

It's true, they do. And not only doors, but the preservation of all the many historical buildings in this city. And I like that because it gives you a sense of 'what was' mixed with 'what's now' - the past and present.

"And you're right about this history aspect. As we get older, we really appreciate the stories behind these special locations."

Isn't that something? And NY too, has such rich, historical locations. We don't always appreciate it when we're younger, but then as we get older, we go...WOW!

Much thanks for stopping by, bud. Have a most excellent week!

  9. Ron, I NEVER tire of looking at the doors in Philly! You've captured some amazing shots here. I find the blue ones especially captivating, particularly #6 and #7. I'm not sure why, but not too many doors in the part of Illinois where I live are painted blue, more's the pity!

And you snapped them at Christmastime, too -- how splendid! Getting another peek into Christmas Past, with its wreaths and decorations, just makes my day!

By the way, something about #4 makes me uneasy. Perhaps it's the steepness of the stairs (or the sheer number!). I just can't imagine navigating them after an ice storm -- and with no bannister, ha!

    Happy Monday to you!

  10. Hey there Bijoux!

That door, and the last door were the last two doors I photographed yesterday. I love the colors in 321 and the brickwork of the stairs. It also intrigued me at how NARROW that door is.

"You don't find such old, interesting doors in the suburbs."

That's one of the reason why I enjoy city life so much.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a SUPER week!

  12. Hey there Dale!

" I think I'm picking number four as my favourite."

I'm not exactly sure what that building is because it's no longer open, but it's in the historical area of Philly. I loved the red door and the marble pillars.

"but a new favourite phrase too; I shall be using "feel provoking" as soon as I can crowbar it into a sentence."

I found that quote online yesterday, isn't it faaaaaaabulous? I had no idea WHO that gentleman was until I looked him up. He's a writer from the UK!

And it's so ironic you shared that DOORS video because I was actually thinking of weaving either a photo or a piece of music into this post FROM the Doors.

"The last one almost looks like a door into a magical land!"

HA! That's what I thought to!! Almost like a portal into Alice In Wonderland! It took me a few seconds to even notice that that was a DOOR.

The quote I found online yesterday afternoon. And when I saw it, I thought it went went with the final photo.

  14. I must admit there are some lovely looking door here, Ron. Unfortunately, most doors around us are UVPC, white and boring, as is ours. All the houses were built in the 60's, aside from the old mining houses.

  15. Hello there Debbie!

"I find the blue ones especially captivating, particularly #6 and #7. I'm not sure why, but not too many doors in the part of Illinois where I live are painted blue, more's the pity!"

Meeee too! I loved the blue in #6, and the bright yellow in contrast to the black in #7. Also, that tiny bit of light blue to the right.

"And you snapped them at Christmastime, too -- how splendid!"

Actually, I snapped these photographs over the past week. People here STILL have their Christmas decorations up, can you believe that?

"By the way, something about #4 makes me uneasy. Perhaps it's the steepness of the stairs (or the sheer number!). I just can't imagine navigating them after an ice storm -- and with no bannister, ha!"

It's so ironic you mentioned that because I took that photograph earlier last week (Monday or Tuesday) and there WAS ice on the ground. It was FREEZING that day.

That's one of things I really like about this city - the historical architecture and how it's preserved.

"Unfortunately, most doors around us are UVPC, white and boring, as is ours. All the houses were built in the 60's,"

That's pretty much how South Florida is. I also lived in Orlando, Florida, and there you see more "character" in the architecture because it's much older and more southern.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a lovely week!

  17. Rocking post, Ron! I so enjoyed viewing each of these doors you photographed. But the one that really stands out for me is #8. It's so goth-looking. And I love how you captured the refection of the sky in the glass window above the door itself. It gives the picture such a mysterious feel - like what's behind the door.

    Great quote too!

  18. Hiya Matt!

    Thank you :)

"And I love how you captured the refection of the sky in the glass window above the door itself. It gives the picture such a mysterious feel - like what's behind the door."

Do you know what's funny about that? I didn't even see the reflection of the sky in the window when I took the photograph. It wasn't until I got home and uploaded the photos onto my computer did I notice it. I took two photographs of that door, and the one you see here is the one that had the most clarity of the reflection. And yes, I too thought the photo had a goth-like feel to it. Especially with the two flying dragon statues on either side.

Much thanks for stopping by, buddy! Have a fantabulous week!

"..I also have a thing for steps and pathways.."

    Meeeeeeeeeeeeee too!!!!!!!

For me, doors, steps and pathways are so symbolic - new beginnings, moving forward, going down a different path.

I feel a change coming on in my life, so perhaps this is why I took these photographs.

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful week!

    Ahem.

I remember your last post on doors. And I like them, too: I think of them as gateways to the past. Stepping through a door, it feels like you are entering another time and dimension almost. They always say "if these walls could talk," and I believe that. How do you access walls? Through doors, of course. Everything is interconnected.

Thanks for the deep post today, Ron.

  23. Oh Wow, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I love you too, my friend, for remembering my passion for doors... and for being there at all times xx

I really like all the pictures but the gate in the wall held my gaze for a long time... I swear it holds a secret or two.

I'm very late reading your blog, having been to my first (this time round) committee meeting.... jeepers creepers, I'm worn out.... lol.

  24. I LOVE doors too. What I really like is checking out the door handles, especially on the old, vintage doors. Your photos are so much fun to see. And I love the quote.....probably because it has the word *perception* in it. :-) Hope you're having an enjoyable hiatus.

  25. Ron -- I shared your post on Facebook because I loved it so much. I almost prefaced my status by calling it "Door Porn" but stopped short because not all my FB friends would appreciate the word porn in that way. But it IS door porn and we love it!

Annnnnnyway.... if you were on Facebook you would have seen that half of my London pictures this spring were of doors, doors, doors! I loved that some of them had a great checkerboard "lead up" for lack of a proper or better word. You know, where a person would stand if they were knocking. Stoop? Is that what I want to say? I think I'm rambling because all this door porn got me all excited. Let's just say I really enjoyed looking at the shots you got and I'm glad to know you now as a fellow door lover, or "door whore" as I'm calling us now. Hee.

  26. Ron, I love the write-up, the doors and the quote! I think that I do form a perception about the people who live in a house by their door. I like doors too. In fact when we were still only thinking about building a house, we bought the front door because we saw it and loved it.

You did a really excellent job of choosing and photographing. Thank you!

I TOTALLY agree! That door did/does the same for me. And it's funny, I cropped the top of that photograph because there was a building behind it (very modern-looking) which I thought distracted from the feel of the door.

"I'm very late reading your blog, having been to my first (this time round) committee meeting.... jeepers creepers, I'm worn out.... lol."

  36. That last door is absolutely stunning. I wonder if the owner of the house painted it! If they did I wonder what the inside of that house must look like. So fascinating. I know they say dont judge a book by its cover but I wonder if its okay to judge a home by its door?

  37. Well, no small secret that I love doors...almost got myself in trouble in England photographing a door. I think the only thing that spared me was MY accent (LOL) and offering to share my photos on the camera with the gal who came out with a phone in hand to ask me questions. Oh but talk about doors with character!! You captured some of that character in the photos. Awesome doors in you neck of the woods!

LOVE your collection, sir. 7 and 8 held my attention for some time, as did 321. I loved the reflected trees one had and the shape and rustic-ness of the other.
    And that blue door--too adorable!!

  39. Wow. These aren't just doors. Some of them are works of art. These are great pics that deserve another look. And forgive me for asking, but are some of these from brownstones? Not being a city guy I'm not sure if that's the right term for the brick buildings...

Yes, I think they did. That door is actually the opening of a space between the house and the carport. I think it's actually were they keep their garbage cans.

"I know they say don't judge a book by its cover but I wonder if its okay to judge a home by its door?"

So much of the architecture here in Philly is influenced by European architecture. That's why so many foreigners who visit, say that Philadelphia reminds them of home.

" And forgive me for asking, but are some of these from brownstones?"

Yes, and the term is correct - brownstone.

#'s 1 and 3 are brownstones. Brownstones are usually very LARGE buildings that are homes or converted apartment buildings. The other brick-looking buildings in these photos are row homes - which are very traditional in Philadelphia. They're usually much smaller and more narrow.
