Whenever I hear the term Flower Power, I immediately have a psychedelic flashback to the 1960's and think of a Volkswagen Beetle or van decorated in daisies and peace signs.

Kind of like this...

Back then, I had daisy stickers stuck on my school book covers, my bathtub floor, and all over my bedroom. I also had a few Peter Max posters, inflatable furniture, shag carpet, and beaded curtains on my bedroom door, all of which were very popular in the '60's. Oh, and I also burned strawberry incense sticks while running all over the house chanting, "Make love, not war...make love, not war!"

And I can still remember my mother rolling her eyes and saying, "Ronnie...do you even know what that means?"

"No, but everyone else is saying it."

Even though I was rather young during the '60's, I was a want-a-be hippie child and longed for the day when I could wear pink bell-bottom pants, a suede vest, and daisies in my afro...

Anyhow, the reason I'm sharing all this is because it's spring and flowers seem to be blossoming everywhere. Therefore, I decided to share a celebratory blog post about Flower Power because it's true, flowers do have the power to make you smile, feel good, and bring a sense of peace.

So, please enjoy the power of flowers...

I leave you with one last photo (which I found online) that totally depicts the Flower Power of the '60's.

A Volkswagen Beetle, covered in flowers...

Have a FAB Monday, y'all!
Peace and love.

  1. Great post, Ron, you took me right back to when I longed to dress in pink but it wasn't 'right' for someone my age. Bah! I've made up for it since though, pink is definitely my colour... and lilac too, for a change. Any other colour makes me look.... er ... old! Flower power, I remember it well. If only I could have been a real part of it!

It's funny looking back at the various stages of growing up, seeing the change in fashions and the different things we raved over. Even attitudes have changed. Some older people look down on today's youth but were they any better themselves?

Well it's the start of a new week for you and a new year for me, darn it! Have a nice one, my friend x

  2. We had those daisy stickers on our bath-tub, too! And I had curtains in green, pink yellow and orange daisies. Groovy!

You know I'm a HUGE fan of flowers of almost any sort. Just yesterday I was packing up some bulbs I'd dug up to move with me so I can have some of my irises, callas, daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths move with me. And I've already ordered more from a bulb company to be shipped to me in the spring! Gorgeous flower photos. I'd pick a faoirite but I love them all.

  3. Hey, Ron, what a groovy post! The flower power images bring back memories as I was an aspiring young hippie myself.

"No, but everyone else is saying it."

Yeah, that sounds a lot like my younger self as well! The flower photos are great, just the kind of thing we need to help us forget that horrible winter. And I love the Flower Bug!

Thanks for posting, buddy! Take care and I hope your Memorial Day is far out!

  4. Ron, what a great post! I was born in the early 80's, but I've always had an affinity for the 60's, especially the music. I love the sound of Motown and it was very big back then. And by the way, I saw the video clip you placed on your sidebar this week of the Supremes. I loved the Supremes! My mother and father have some photographs of their first apartment they lived in when they first got married and it had shag carpet in green.

Love the flower pictures you shared, they're all beautiful. The color of that red rose #5 is beautiful. And I love the Flowered VW Beetle!

Have a wonderful week and Memorial Day, Ron x

  5. Good morning Valerie!

" I've made up for it since though, pink is definitely my colour..."

I LOVE pink! And I really need to wear more of it. I think this summer I'm going to try adding an accent of pink to my mainly black wardrobe.

"It's funny looking back at the various stages of growing up, seeing the change in fashions and the different things we raved over. Even attitudes have changed. Some older people look down on today's youth but were they any better themselves?"

I love how you said that because it's so true! Isn't it funny how each generation looks back and thinks, "Well, MY generation was so much better than the generation today." But it's as you said, are they any better than we were?

Much thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Have a FAB week!!!

    X to you and Joe!

HAHAHAHAHA! Yes, daisies were the RAGE in the 60's style, weren't they? And I remember the ones I had on my bathtub floor and how they would prevent me from slipping while taking a shower. And what's really funny is that I STILL see them being sold in the bathroom department of stores.

"Just yesterday I was packing up some bulbs I'd dug up to move with me so I can have some of my irises, callas, daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths move with me. And I've already ordered more from a bulb company to be shipped to me in the spring!"

    Aren't flowers the BEST?

And I so envy you because you have such an amazing green thumb. All the photos you've shared of your garden are stunning!

"The flower photos are great, just the kind of thing we need to help us forget that horrible winter. And I love the Flower Bug!"

Amen! Man, wasn't that one LONG winter we had? Right now, the flowers here are blossoming like crazy and it's so wonderful to see them.

  8. Love this! I saw a VW beetle (on FB) covered with a hippie style 60s crocheted cover! The night before I'd dreamed I'd found the perfect VW love bug bracelet charm...what's with all these VWs popping up in my life?

Me too! I am a HUGE Motown fan!!!!! And I actually think I'm a bigger fan of it now than I was back then. I don't think we ever really appreciate the styles, fashion and music of the time period we grew up in until afterwards; looking back.

"And I love the Flowered VW Beetle!"

Isn't that Beetle adorable? I found that photo online yesterday.

  11. Love that last pic! That is awesome! Where did you find that? You are right though flowers do have the power to make you smile. Every time the cherry blossom tree blooms at my parents house I cant help but stare at it. Its just gorgeous. Debating doing a DIY painting of one to have that memory in the house year long.

    ROFLMAO!

Ron, between what you said and then viewing the pictures below it, you had me cracking up! Did you really have an afro?

And you're not going to believe this but my girlfriend drives a Volkswagen Beetle (in black) and she loves it. I have to show her this post so she can see the last photo of the bug covered in flowers, she's going to really love it.

Great flower photos, dude! #4 is perfection.

Isn't that last photo AWESOME? I found it online yesterday while Googling "VW Flower Bug."

"You are right though flowers do have the power to make you smile. Every time the cherry blossom tree blooms at my parents house I cant help but stare at it. Its just gorgeous.

OMG...I LOVE the cherry blossom trees! I just wish they lasted longer because they blossom and then fall off so quickly. I took a SLEW of photos of them this year though - in pink AND white.

"Debating doing a DIY painting of one to have that memory in the house year long."

That sounds like a GREAT idea!

  14. Hiya Matt!

"Did you really have an afro?"

Yes, I really did! In fact, many years ago (before you started reading my blog) I posted photographs of my afro. My hair used to be VERY curly. I wore an afro through the '70's and '80's, until I stared cutting my hair very short.

"And you're not going to believe this but my girlfriend drives a Volkswagen Beetle (in black) and she loves it."

That's AWESOME! I love the new VW Beetles. They're so CUTE! And VW's are such a reliable and sturdy vehicle. They last forever!

  15. Wow, the memories! My grandparents had the beads separating their living room and kitchen. I had Disco Ken who wore the suede vest and shook his hips. Loved the 60's! (I was a wee kiddo too.) Have a great weekend, Ron! Thanks for the beautiful flowers to feast my eyes upon.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ron, I LOVE your flowers -- they're colorful and cheerful, and there's nothing like flowers to make a person smile!

I can't fathom what designers were thinking when they came up with bell-bottom pants, Afros, and all those flowers. I suppose there have been worse fashion statements along the line, but boy, do those screams "the '60s"!

(That said, I seem to recall some flower stick-ons that went in the bottom of the bathtub to keep you from slipping in the shower, ha!)

    Happy Memorial Day to you!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Like you, I was totally obsessed with the 60's! But a little young to take full advantage of them . . . but I remember a lot! Pretty flowers, you must have a great camera to get such great pics!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ron, I love that first picture of the hippie guy making the peace sign! Did you create that photo? It's funny you posted about the 1960's because my parents went to a Halloween party last year and the theme was the SIXTIES. Both of them went dressed as hippies, much like what you shared in these photos. They put their costumes together by purchasing pieces from a thrift store. Their costumes were awesome. And they won first prize in the contest!

Your photographs of the flowers are just beautiful. The colors are amazing. I love the water drops on the first two. And that flower wreath is gorgeous. Are those flowers real, because they're so perfect they look artificial?

    Happy Memorial Day, Ron!

    HAHAHAHAHA! OMG, Jean....that's FAAAAABULOUS!!!!

" My grandparents had the beads separating their living room and kitchen."

Beads were so popular back then! I had some that were made of plastic that looked like diamonds, and then I also had some that were made of bamboo and looked almost oriental.

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a groovy week!

    And Happy Memorial Day!

Yes, me too, Benze. I was probably around 9 or 10 years old then, but it's funny how much I remember. I was a teenager in the '70's, so that's the decade I was more able to take full advantage of.

My camera is nothing fancy. It's a Canon Powershot that has both auto and manual settings. But I'll tell ya, it takes great pictures.

Aren't flowers faaaaaaaabulous? They always make make my heart smile.

"I can't fathom what designers were thinking when they came up with bell-bottom pants, Afros, and all those flowers."

HA! I know, can you believe it? And yet, what's really ironic is that much of that style came back into fashion YEARS later, such as, bell-bottom pants and those polyester shirts. Oh well, they say that fashion often repeats itself, so I guess it's true.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a super week!

  22. Hey ho Robert!

Yes, I created part of that first photo. The picture of the guy I found online on a costume shop website. However, I added the text and the daisies by using photo editing.

"They put their costumes together by purchasing pieces from a thrift store. Their costumes were awesome. And they won first prize in the contest!"

    *clapping*

Oh, how AWESOME is that! And I bet they both looked faaaaabulous!

" And that flower wreath is gorgeous. Are those flowers real, because they're so perfect they look artificial?"

Do you know, it's ironic you mentioned that because when I first saw the wreath hanging on the door, I thought it was artificial too! So I walked up close, to get a better look at it and YES...those flowers are real!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Happy Memorial Day to you too! And have a groovy week!

HA! Isn't funny how many of us back then, had those in our bathtubs?

" I remember a friend of mine moved and sent me a letter saying she had purple shag carpeting in her new bedroom. I was so jealous!"

I had blue/green shag carpet in my bedroom because those were like my two favorite color combinations back then.

"but calla lilys are my fave."

I agree....calla lilies are my fav as well. However, I had never seen pink calla lilies before, so when I spotted them growing in front of someone's home, I had to snap a photo of them.

You know, I had a long fuzzy furry foot rug..... I LOVED that rug. Then I even made my own out of a bathmat... but it wasn't quite fluffy enough! And early on I burned incense in my car ashtray. That was NOT safe I am thinking? ha ha ha!!!

Isn't that wreath faaaaabulous? That was one of the last photographs I took yesterday before publishing this post. I was walking down the street and something told me to walk down this little side street. So I did and VIOLA...I saw that wreath hanging on the door and got a picture of it. At first, I thought it was artificial because it's so perfect.

"You know, I had a long fuzzy furry foot rug..... I LOVED that rug."

Yes! Yes! Yes! I had one of those foot print rugs too! They were sooooo '60's!!!

  27. Oh.My.God. We so had the flowers in the tub, too. And I remember my mother trying to take them off years later and she ended up having to do a bath fitter thing because they would NOT come off! They were like cockroaches in the apocalypse. They wouldn't go away.

That's so funny that you gave your mother the "everyone else is doing it" line. I used to walk around the house singing, "Torn between two lovers" and my mother would just shake her head.

Have a great week! Peace! :-)

  33. What wonderful flower shots. I too am a product of the sixties. I had flowers in my hair and my neru jacket. The lime green leisure suit. The shirt open to the navel and a peace sign or two necklace. We painted our cars with paint brushes and we all thought that we were cool. We loved everyone who wanted our love and as long as they accepted us we fit in. The lava lamps and the water bongs were there right along side the strobe light. Our music was loud and our voices were louder. We wanted peace and we would fight for peace. How odd to fight for peace. We had a distrust for the adults and we knew we were the best generation ever. Then something weird happened we became our parents.

Flowers DO have power, don't they? They are like mini miracles, with their beauty, color, fragrance and some of them just make me smile, every time like daisies and sunflowers! To me, they look like they are smiling in return. ;-)

Maybe the world needs another "summer of love" and more of the good vibes and energy that went along with that era. Peace and harmony never go out of style or lose their appeal, do they? And the world definitely needs more of both.

I even remember the bell bottoms and the afros. Good times!! I absolutely agree that flower power makes one HAPPY!! I simply cannot wait til we pass over the South Carolina line in April and see real BLOOMS! Color!! I SMILE when I see all of the beautiful flowers in bloom!! I also smile when I see VW's decked out in flowers! Thanks for that awesome visual!! Happy Day to you!! xo

  51. Ron, this post is sooooo groooovy! The clothes and Volkswagen (a German name, literally the people's wagon) vans were seen all over campus and at anti-war protests. Hippies liked the vans because they tried to fit as many into it as possible.
I was 18 and on my way to Woodstock, when my parents said, "No!". Since they said yes when I was merely 14 to see the Beatles at Shea Stadium with my g/f's, I was surprised and disappointed. In four years so much had changed, they grew very concerned, as depicted by Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young's "Teach Your Children Well".
Man, was I bummed out when I went to college in 1969 at Douglass. Note the language. LOL Everyone was buzzing about Woodstock that summer as so many from New Jersey had gone. Ron, I believe there is and never will be anything like the sixties again. The collective consciousness. Just fabbbbb!
And the flowers are absolutely beautiful. As I scrolled down, their scents literally popped into my mind. And the calla lily. Do you remember the film, Stage Door, with the greatest actresses alive?! "The calla lilies are in bloom again," played by Katherine Hepburn.
Ron, this trip down memory lane was a gas, gas, gas! Peace out, forever!

You are sooo right about that! And I don't think I ever truly realize just how FAB the sixties were until looking back, many years later. But isn't that the way it is with most decades? We don't fully appreciate them until much later.

" Do you remember the film, Stage Door, with the greatest actresses alive?! "The calla lilies are in bloom again," played by Katherine Hepburn."

    *clapping and applauding*

Yes! And leave to you (my movie buff friend) for mentioning that because that's EXACTLY what I think anytime I see a calla lily! And btw, wasn't that movie fabulous? So many great actresses in one film! What a classic!

MUCH thanks for stopping by and sharing your memories and exuberance about the '60's. LOVED your comment!

Peace, Love, and Flower Power, my friend!

  54. I, too, was far too young to really BE a flowerchild....or maybe I was the child they were referring to. :-/ I did find myself in bebotomed juans anf those long, gauzy shirts. Mostly I was trying to cover my obesity. LOL. I don't think it had anything to do with being a hippy. Oh wait...I feel a pun coming on! LOL. I do think I rode the shirttails of the era, indulging in psychedelic recreation...but I never aspired to be "hip", just another way of escaping reity.
I have to adit, I chuckle when I see some of the fashions of that era returning...platform shoes, bellbottoms...hip huggers...and the peace symbol for "decoration"?! Seriously...decoration!!
I don't chuckle about that one....
The flower photos are awesome. I loved the ones touched by rain. And I want those flowerboxes....rest assured the ones I planted this weekend pale in comparison! Sheeshhh....we plant ours so they GROW.... Those'll be sad looking by mid July. LOL. Mine are sad looking now. Hahahaha...

Bwhahahahhaha! OMG...that CRACKED ME UP. Brilliant!

I never indulged in the psychedelic recreation because I was too scared to. However, I did indulge in 'other' things MANY years later - tee, hee!

I took those rain drop photographs right after it rained one afternoon. I LOVE azaleas! And isn't the flower box faaaaaabulous? That was sitting on a balcony waaaay up high on an apartment.

Much thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Hope you're week has been GROOVY!

  56. Flower Power was the thing when I was 17/18 and I loved it! The highlight of my trip to San Francisco two years ago was going to Haight-Ashbury, and would you believe the radio was playing "If You're Going To San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie as we drove through on the bus?

I was back in my heyday!
