Definition: Romantic Comedy
Romantic comedy films are films with light-hearted, humorous plot lines, centered on romantic ideals such as that true love is able to surmount most obstacles.

I have such varied taste in film genres. I like documentaries, dramas, comedies, suspense-thrillers, and even musicals.

However, being someone who is in love with love and loves the romance of love, I consider myself a hopeful romantic. When in a relationship, I believe in keeping the romance alive. Such as, candlelight dinners, watching a sunset, dancing in the rain, and writing a love letter to your partner on the bathroom mirror with a bar of soap that says, I Love You, so that he sees it in the morning when he goes to shave.

(and yes, I've actually done that with a bar of bath soap)

Therefore, one of my favorite film genres are romantic comedies. I couldn't possibly list all the ones I like, so I decided to narrow them down to my five favorites. And trust me, it took me all week to figure out which ones would make the top five.

But here they are...

When Harry Met Sally (1989) - I can watch this film over and over again and it still feels as fresh as when I saw it the first time. I adore this story because it's about two people who keep meeting over an 11-year period; dislike each other; yet end up falling in love and getting married. It's got some of the best dialogue ever written (by Nora Ephron) for an American romantic comedy. It is Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal at their finest comedic selves.

Something's Gotta Give (2003) - This film has two of my favorite actors (Jack Nicholson & Diane Keaton), who are so perfectly foiled together in this story. Two people, later in life, who find true love for the first time. Hilarious, heartwarming, and beyond brilliant performances. And the finale is so touchingly romantic!

Sleepless In Seattle (1993) - A film co-written and directed by Nora Ephron, about two people who live on opposite sides of the U.S. and are brought together through destiny. And like all Ephron films, the soundtrack of this movie is such an integral part of the story because it weaves the scenes together through musical dialogue.

As Good As It Gets (1997) - Another one of Nicholsons' stellar performances. In fact, the whole cast is stellar. A story that touches on humor, forgiveness, and acceptance. This film was one of my mothers' favorites. And it's ironic because she never even liked Jack Nicholson until she saw him in this role.

Moonstruck (1987) - You don't have to even be Italian to identify with this movie. This is one of those romantic comedies that touches the heart center and funny bone of the entire planet because it's about the one thing we all have in common - AMORE. Cher is so stunningly beautiful in this film.

So, if anyone is interested in watching a romantic comedy this weekend, I can highly recommend these films.

I leave you with a hilariously memorable scene from When Harry Met Sally (and please watch it to the very end because there is a flawless punch line):

Have an orgasmic weekend everyone!
X

I love your choice of films, Ron, especially When Harry Met Sally. The only other one I haven't seen is Moonstruck. Thank you so much for sharing your top choices... and for the gift of laughter, which I really needed today.

    Happy Friday... and weekend x

  2. Ron, I don't think I ever told you this, but my nickname in college was Love Child, because I was infatuated with someone new every couple of weeks! I am a total love junkie!!

My favorite romantic movies are Chasing Amy and Before Sunrise. Ethan Hawke always reminds me of the burnouts I was crushing on in high school......hahaha. He is dirty and yummy! Yes, I just said that!

Thanks for a fun post for the weekend.

  3. Love this post and I am absolutely stealing your bar of soap idea! That is so sweet and I am sure will put a smile on the boy's face :). There are so many romantic comedies I am in love with but I think my fav right now is "He's just not that into you." Its is very true and helps me through many different points in my love life.

  4. Hopeful romantic? Now there's a brilliant variation on a theme!

Love this post, Ron, particularly when you describe your ways of keeping romance alive. It reminds me that I haven't done all I can in this area in my past relationships,

I've been hopeless, but I haven't been romantic, so I'll definitely have what your having!

I'm a card-carrying movie buff, but strangely enough I've only seen a few of the flicks on your list. I tend to like indie dramas or weird foreign films where people smoke, talk about the futility of life, and then die. You know--cheery stuff!

Anyway, your recommendations will keep me busy on Netflix for quite a while! You should host a movie night at your house! I'll bring the popcorn!

Have a most excellent weekend, buddy! Take care!

  5. You have some good suggestions for romantic comedies here, although I must admit I can't bear Sleepless In Seattle.

I'm gonna have to nominate the wonderful Miss Hepburn in "Sabrina" as my favourite classic Rom-Com, and maybe as a more modern selection I'd have to pick the not-so-well-known romantic comedy thriller "Into The Night" with Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer.

  6. "and writing a love letter to your partner on the bathroom mirror with a bar of soap that says, I Love You, so that he sees it in the morning when he goes to shave." Ron, that is so sweetly romantic!

I too am a hopeful romantic so I loved this post! The only movie on your list that I haven't seen is Something's Gotta Give which sounds so good. I'm a huge Diane Keaton fan so I'm surprised I didn't know that one. When Harry Met Sally is a film that I can watch over and over again and still laugh. I remember seeing it for the first time in a theater with my girlfriends and laughing at the orgasm scene. It's a classic.

Wonderful post, Ron. Have a great weekend x

  7. Good morning Valerie!

Is that punch line not FLAWLESS? And I don't know if you knew this, but the woman who speaks the line is actually Rob Reiners' mother, who was the director of the film.

"The only other one I haven't seen is Moonstruck."

If you ever get the chance to see it, I think you would LOVE it. Brilliant cast! Olympia Dukakis, who plays "Rose", has the best lines in the film.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely weekend!

    X to you and Joe!

OMG, I LOVE that!!!!! And it's nice to hear I'm the not only love junkie.

"My favorite romantic movies are Chasing Amy."

    Yup, that's an AWESOME one!!!!

" and Before Sunrise. Ethan Hawke always reminds me of the burnouts I was crushing on in high school......hahaha. He is dirty and yummy! Yes, I just said that!"

HA! You GO, girl!!!!!!!!!! I haven't seen that movie but did a Google search before I left this comment and it sounds like a movie I would love. Thanks for the recommendation.

  9. Hey there Shae!

"and I am absolutely stealing your bar of soap idea! That is so sweet and I am sure will put a smile on the boy's face :)."

It's so funny you mentioned that because I was SO thinking of YOU when I shared that because I know (from your date night posts) how romantic you are, and I think it's AWESOME!

"There are so many romantic comedies I am in love with but I think my fav right now is "He's just not that into you." Its is very true and helps me through many different points in my love life."

Thank you for the recommendation because I've seen that film in F.Y.E. many times, but have never watched it. What a great cast! Love Jennifer Connelly and Drew Barrymore.

  10. Hey there Rob!

"Hopeful romantic? Now there's a brilliant variation on a theme!"

HA! I never like the term, "hopeless romantic", so I switched it to HOPEFUL.

"...particularly when you describe your ways of keeping romance alive. It reminds me that I haven't done all I can in this area in my past relationships, I've been hopeless, but I haven't been romantic, so I'll definitely have what your having!"

I think it's so important to do little things to keep the romance alive in a relationship because it keeps it fresh.

" I tend to like indie dramas or weird foreign films where people smoke, talk about the futility of life, and then die. You know--cheery stuff!"

HA! I like those kind of films as well. I also like very raw films that deal with issues that are not always comfortable to look at because they're real.

  12. Hey there Dale!

"although I must admit I can't bear Sleepless In Seattle."

I totally understand because not all romantic comedies effect people the same way.

"I'm gonna have to nominate the wonderful Miss Hepburn in "Sabrina" as my favourite classic Rom-Com."

LOVE that one too! And I like the original, not the remake.

"and maybe as a more modern selection I'd have to pick the not-so-well-known romantic comedy thriller "Into The Night" with Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer."

Thank you for your recommendation because that's a film I have not heard of.

  13. Hola Denise!

" Ron, that is so sweetly romantic!"

The partner I was with at the time, he and I would do all sorts of romantic things for each other. He was a hopeful romantic as well.

"The only movie on your list that I haven't seen is Something's Gotta Give which sounds so good. I'm a huge Diane Keaton fan so I'm surprised I didn't know that one."

OMG, if you are a Diane Keaton fan you have GOT to see this film because she is not only hilarious, but also nails the more dramatic parts of the film. She and Nicholson are so perfectly cast.

"When Harry Met Sally is a film that I can watch over and over again and still laugh. I remember seeing it for the first time in a theater with my girlfriends and laughing at the orgasm scene. It's a classic."

Yes, I too remember seeing it for the first time in a movie theater and laughing my ass off at the orgasm scene. In fact, the whole audience was laughing.

  15. Ron, my girlfriend and I will often do romantic things for each other. I think what often happens in a relationship is that you forget about the romance and sometimes take it for granted. So I feel it's important to let each other know how much you mean to one another. And they don't have to be big things, things like giving a card or even setting aside a time during the month to have a date night and watch a movie together with a bottle of wine.

Great list of films you shared! When Harry Met Sally is a classic, which my girlfriend and I have watched several times. "I'll have what she's having" ROFLMAO

Nicholson is one of my favorite actors too. The guy can do anything, drama, comedy and even horror like, The Shining. "Here's Johnny."

  16. "Moonstruck" - Yes, Yes, Yes! That is my favorite movie of all time and my husband's as well. WE have worn out copies of that movie we have watched it so many times. My husband, bless his heart, likes rom-coms. With the exception of Sleepless in Seattle, which I thought was a snore and a bore, the others make our list of movies to watch again and again.

"So, Loretta, do you love him?" "I love him somethin' awful" "That's too bad"

    Ah, La bella luna!

  17. "That is my favorite movie of all time and my husband's as well. WE have worn out copies of that movie we have watched it so many times. "

OMG me too, Grace! I had a copy on VHS which I had originally given to my father because he loved that movie. But then after he passed away, I took it back and played it so often that I wore it out and then upgraded to a DVD.

""So, Loretta, do you love him?" "I love him somethin' awful" "That's too bad"

Bwhahahhahahaha! That's one the BEST lines EVER! To me, Olympia had the best lines in the film.

And I loved the line she had, "Who's dead?" HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Couldn't have said it any better myself. And you are so right, it doesn't have to be anything BIG, just little things.

"Nicholson is one of my favorite actors too. The guy can do anything, drama, comedy and even horror like, The Shining. "Here's Johnny.""

I soooooooo agree! And he's the only actor I know who can be revolting and utterly charming in the same breath. He's brilliant!

  21. Fabulous list, Ron! I loved Moonstruck, too, and agree that Cher was spectacular in it.

I like the idea of keeping the romance alive in a relationship, too. I mean, really, something drew two people together, but that "something" generally is temporary. If they're going to stay together, there usually needs to be something of substance, something that's more permanent. Why not romance, and the effort of keeping those special loving feelings alive?!

    Happy long weekend, dear!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ron, As Good As It Gets is one of my favorites too. I love the tension between the characters that Nicholson and Kinnear portrayed and how it went from one way to another. And I also love the relationship between the dog and Nicholson. Helen Hunt is so good in this film too.

Ah, romance! I'm a firm believer in keeping it alive in a relationship as well. Too often, after some time goes by, it gets lost. So I think it's important to rekindle the romance and remember those feelings you had at the start of the relationship.

Great post, Ron. And thanks for sharing the clip from When Harry Met Sally. I forgot how hysterical it was.

Wasn't she fabulous in that film, Debbie? And I am so glad she won the Oscar that year. I also think she looked so stunningly beautiful in that film.

Brava! I love the way you said that and couldn't agree with you more. Yes, there definitely needs to be something of substance and more permanent. But why not keep those loving feelings alive with a little romance?

" Too often, after some time goes by, it gets lost. So I think it's important to rekindle the romance and remember those feelings you had at the start of the relationship."

  25. Ah, yes, 'I'll have what she's having' ....such a funny scene. Of your list, Moonstruck is my very favorite. LOVE that movie! Then would be a tie between Something's Gotta Give and As Good as it Gets. I've seen them quite a few times each, too. The Meg Ryan ones are good, but I like her in French Kiss wayyyy more, and even maybe You've Got Mail.
I enjoy romance! Ron and I still go on 'dates' and hold hands and all that sweet stuff. He sent me a text the other day that said 'You are very sexy.' I had to laugh because he sent it while sitting in the parking lot of a convenience store while waiting on our son who had gone inside to get a few things. They were on their way to work. So, in the morning, I look like a total wreck. Crazy hair, no makeup or the remains of the day before, beastly breath.... but he sees none of that. Or rather, chose to see something else.
    Hope your weekend is wonderful!!

  26. Hey there Mary!

"Of your list, Moonstruck is my very favorite. LOVE that movie!"

Faaaaaaabulous film! I have a DVD copy which contains a "special feature" documentary that explains how the movie was cast and made. It's so interesting!

I am such a fan of Meg Ryan, but can you believe that I haven't seen French Kiss!?! I've gotta look for that one in F.Y.E. to see if I can get a used copy. Thanks for the recommendation. And yes, You've Got Mail is also one of my favorites!

"Ron and I still go on 'dates' and hold hands and all that sweet stuff. He sent me a text the other day that said 'You are very sexy."

Aw....that is SO SWEET! And that's exactly what I mean about keeping the romance alive in a relationship. It's doing those little things (like sending a text) that mean so much. And having read your blog over these many years, I know that Ron and you are such romantics!

  30. "When Harry Met Sally" isn't just one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time...it's one of my favorite films PERIOD. And a New Year's Eve tradition for me.

"Such as, candlelight dinners, watching a sunset, dancing in the rain, and writing a love letter to your partner on the bathroom mirror with a bar of soap that says, I Love You, so that he sees it in the morning when he goes to shave."

LOVE this idea! But if I tried that with Tara, she'd slap me silly for getting the mirror dirty and would then spend the next twenty minutes scrubbing it and spritzing it and wiping it down.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm not much of a romance movie person but these 5 movies are probably in my list of favorite movies, too! I think Cher was at her most absolute beautiful in Moonstruck. Olivia Dukakis was brilliant. Jack Nicholson was perfect in As Good As It Gets. EXCELLENT choices, bro!

While you're talking about movies, We Are The Millers, is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Not a rom-com, a wee bit raunchy but HYSTERICAL!

    ReplyDelete
  32. *laughing* How can ya not love that scene? It's priceless and ageless ('cept for her hair....omg....big hair....LOL)

I'm not good at sitting still for a lot of movies, but you've got several here that I'd sit still for. I'll have to add 'Somethings gotta give' to the list I have--long list cuz it's summer. But come winter--it'll be good to have.

Until then, I'll take the snippets here--and on the sidebar. Oh my--now THAT one's on the list too. LOL

  36. Couldn't agree more with your wonderful choices, Ron! Nora Ephron, Rob Reiner, two of the best romantic comedy writers. I was so upset when Nora Ephron had gone last year.

Yes, they are the crème de la crème of romance and fun with heart! How about the "Dancing Henry's" in "Something's Gotta Give?!" Hilarious! And in Moonstruck, Ronny: I love you. Loretta: Snap out of it! Oh, I'm really laughing -- just realizing the "Ronny." How you must have roared?! I have to say that of them all, Moonstruck is my fave. " Si, la bella luna. The moon brings the woman to the man, capisce?" My father loves the kitchen scene at the very end while waiting for Johnny. "What's the matter, pop?" Crying into his hankie, "I'm confused..."

Love happy endings. Yes, it's unrealistic at times, but what's the point of life if there isn't romance? And how wonderfully romantic you are, Ron! You truly are a gift! Have a wonderful Labor Day! :))

  37. "I was so upset when Nora Ephron had gone last year."

Me too, Petra! I was surprised by how deeply it affected me. It felt like I had lost someone close to me. Nora was such a gifted writer and director of romantic comedies.

"Yes, they are the crème de la crème of romance and fun with heart! How about the "Dancing Henry's" in "Something's Gotta Give?!""

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The BEST!

" And in Moonstruck, Ronny: I love you. Loretta: Snap out of it! Oh, I'm really laughing -- just realizing the "Ronny." How you must have roared?!"

Yes, I thought it was so ironic that we shared the same name.

"What's the matter, pop?" Crying into his hankie, "I'm confused..."

    OMG, that scene was HILARIOUS!

"Love happy endings. Yes, it's unrealistic at times, but what's the point of life if there isn't romance?"

Exactly! And I even love romantic comedies that sometimes don't always have a happy ending, such as, "The Break Up" with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. I love that film!
