As I’m sure many of you are aware, selfies are very big right now. But since I don’t own a cell phone, I’ve never had the narcissistic pleasure of taking 10,000 pictures of myself and sharing them on Instagram, Facebook, or some online dating website, as so many people seem to do.

I can't tell you how many times in a day I will spot people on the streets of Philadelphia taking selfies. And not only the streets, but in stores, restaurants, while driving in their cars, and yes, even in public restrooms, I kid you not! I guess because bathrooms have mirrors, they're the ideal spot for taking selfies because you can gaze at your gorgeous reflection while licking your lips and clicking your smartphone.

Just for the hell of it while putting this post together, I Googled "selfies" and then clicked on the image button. And do you know what a large percentage of the images were? Either guys flexing their biceps in a bathroom mirror, or girls wearing bikini bathing suits; posing as if they were in a Victoria's Secret ad.

Can someone please tell me what the deal is with selfies?

The WHOLE WORLD seems to be pointing their cell phones at themselves.

Everywhere I look…SELFIES! SELFIES! SELFIES!

I mean, seriously, how many pictures can you keep taking of yourself? And why would anyone feel the need to constantly show their friends and family members what they look like everywhere they go and everything they do? What, are they publicly documenting every frame of their lives?

Honestly, I simply don't understand it.

However, I decided to see what the big hoo-ha is in taking selfies by using my digital camera.

Ron's Selfies

Here I am early yesterday morning, still half-asleep, taking selfies while looking at other people's selfies online...
Here I am selfie shaving...

Here I am selfie brushing my teeth...
Here I am selfie walking in the rain...

Here I am selfie drinking coffee in my apartment elevator (and god only knows what the security guard at the front desk was thinking because there is a surveillance camera in the elevator) I look like a serial killer...

Lastly, here I am selfie buying toilet paper...

And tomorrow I'm going to try this, so stay tuned...

Have a SELFIE Monday, y'all!

  1. Hey, Ron, were you listening to me moaning? haha. I am thinking of starting a new trend... I HATE SELFIES ... just to see how many would follow such a new trend.

The practice shows how vane people are and how many want to prove the fact to others. Look at me, aren't I wonderful. NO, NOT ME, I'm just mimicking.

Not content with waving phone cameras at themselves folk are now buying special sticks (which I believe are called selfie sticks) with which to take better shots. The world has definitely gone mad but I guess this widespread practice is taking their minds off more serious things.

Have a great week, Ron x

  2. Bahahahaha....oh, you are a HOOT, Ron! My favorites are your elevator and TP selfies! You were able to capture the real you in those! LOL! I'm super impressed with your camera selfie skills. My husband and I tried one time to take pictures of ourselves together while on a trip with our digital camera and it was a complete fail.

I don't have a smartphone, so I've never taken a true selfie. I think I'll just remain camera shy!

  3. Hey, Ron, this post is spot on! Selfies are the curse of the 21st Century. People are taking the most trivial events and turning them in epic moments. Your selfies (Ronnie's?) capture the spirit of this ridiculous behavior!

    Death to Selfies!

I've done think two in my life and they were both in jest. What the hell people are recording for posterity, I don't know, but, please, people, just stop!

Great post, buddy, and good for you for not having a cell phone! Have a great week!

  4. Ron, I am going to email this post to one of my girlfriends because she needs to read it. She is a selfie addict! The girl has her cell phone out all the time taking selfies wearing different hairstyles and makeup. Whenever we go shopping, she's always taking pictures of herself in the dressing rooms wearing different outfits so that when she gets home she can look at all the pictures and then decide what outfits she wants to buy. Lol!

I love this post! These pictures of you are hysterical. I love the one buying toilet paper. You are so cute.

Have a wonderful week and thanks for the laughs, Ron x

  5. Good morning Valerie!

"I am thinking of starting a new trend... I HATE SELFIES ... just to see how many would follow such a new trend."

Amen! I would definitely follow you. And maybe you and I can do monthly posts on our blogs - "We Hate Selfies."

"Not content with waving phone cameras at themselves folk are now buying special sticks (which I believe are called selfie sticks) with which to take better shots."

OMG, I've not heard of those, but will have to Google it later today to see what they are.

The whole selfie craze has gone mad - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a faaabulous week!

    X to you and Joe!

  6. I took the one of me shopping for TP in Walgreens. And I took it fast because the store was crowded and I didn't want other customers to see me - HA!

" I'm super impressed with your camera selfie skills. My husband and I tried one time to take pictures of ourselves together while on a trip with our digital camera and it was a complete fail."

Oh trust me, a lot of these pictures were a complete fail. I had trouble holding the camera at a certain angle so that I could press the shutter button and still point the camera at myself. MANY of them came out blurry.

    "I don't have a smartphone, so I've never taken a true selfie."

    Me neither.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

" Selfies are the curse of the 21st Century. People are taking the most trivial events and turning them in epic moments."

And I'm sure you, living in a city like me, see this A LOT on the streets and on public transportation. Selfies, selfies...EVERYWHERE!!!!

"and good for you for not having a cell phone!"

I honestly don't ever want one. And people are shocked when they find out I don't have a cell phone.

    Bwhahhahahha! OMG...that is HILARIOUS!

I see the same thing at work. Girls will come in and try on a new color lipstick; take a selfie, and then email it to their friends to get their feedback, I kid you not!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a wonderful week too!

  9. " I look like a serial killer..." ROFLMAO! Ron, I think you should start a column on your blog doing snarky commentaries on worldly trends. You are so funny.

    Hilarious selfies!

My girlfriend and me both have iPhones, but have taken very few selfies. And it's only been when we're on vacation somewhere and send them to friends or family. I agree, selfies have gotten way out of hand.

    Great post, dude!

  10. Ron, I shared this post with my husband this morning and he wanted me to tell you that it was hoot. He really enjoys your writing style. Hysterical photos! My husband also uses a brush to shave, he noticed that immediately.

We own a smartphone but have never used the camera feature to take selfies, partially because I hate having my picture taken Lol.

Can you believe the rain yesterday? We stayed in all day and napped. Today it's beautiful.

Thank you :) Glad you enjoyed. I had a blast putting this post together.

" My husband also uses a brush to shave, he noticed that immediately."

Yes, I've been using a brush to shave for the past 4 years and love it. It's the best way to shave!

"Can you believe the rain yesterday? We stayed in all day and napped. Today it's beautiful."

I only went out once to get some stuff at Walgreens, but mainly stayed indoors and lounged around. I actually enjoy rainy days. Yes, today it's gorgeous!

  14. So NOT into selfies! I know people who take selfies and post on FB like all day long...I want to ask "into yourself much?"!

    ReplyDelete
  15. The selfie craze annoys me. I don't think it's such a bad thing to get an occasional photo of yourself, but good grief! I had a boyfriend who used to send me endless selfies. And he was one of those ridiculously photogenic people so I get the appeal, but it signaled an underlying narcissism that troubled me. And it should have - he turned out to be remarkably selfish.

I don't think the type of phone makes a difference. I've seen plenty of folks taking selfies with just regular cell phones. For that matter, a selfie with a camera is still a selfie. But however it's taken, I think the trend of taking endless photos in every conceivable situation is disturbing. The ones you took for the post are well within the range of what some folks do routinely. There was even a rash of people taking selfies in front of open caskets at funerals! How crazy is that?

    ReplyDelete
  16. A serial killer?! Oh, Ron, you crack me up!!

Yes, it's finally time somebody said something about all these Selfie-Addicts! I've heard they do it to document a slice of their life for posterity. Frankly, that sounds like so much hoo-ha. I think they're just VAIN and want to impress their friends (and possibly cause envy in their enemies!) for all this narcissism.

You don't own a cell phone?? That boggles my mind, dear. I'm fairly attached to mine (and I'm probably just the one who said I'd never do that, ha!) It's a mixed blessing, you know!

    Happy Monday!

  17. Ha! Love it. I've been considering doing a blog post on selfies too, because my daughter takes them ALL DAY LONG. Seriously. It's nonstop. I like your idea of doing your own mundane selfies. I doubt I can top your toilet paper shot, but I promise to give it my all!

  18. LOL! Ron, I love this post, from the Toy Story photo at the top, to your photos, to your hilarious commentary. The one of you buying toilet paper cracked me up!

" Either guys flexing their biceps in a bathroom mirror, or girls wearing bikini bathing suits; posing as if they were in a Victoria's Secret ad." I've seen those too! What kills me are the ones where people are trying to be serious but they're not. I've only taken a few selfies if I'm at a store and want to know if my roommate approves of a certain food and then send it to him. Other than that, I don't do selfies.

Great post, Ron. You never fail to entertain!

  21. Hellooooo there Debbie!

It looks like a photograph from America's Most Wanted - HA!

"I've heard they do it to document a slice of their life for posterity."

I know, but my god, it's the people who post very revealing selfies of themselves online that concern me. I wonder if they realize that those photos are out there on the Internet forever and might be traced?

"You don't own a cell phone?? That boggles my mind, dear. I'm fairly attached to mine (and I'm probably just the one who said I'd never do that, ha!) It's a mixed blessing, you know!"

HA! Yes, it boggles the minds of MANY people I know. When they find out I don't have a cell phone they say, "How do you LIVE without a cell phone?!?" Many, many years ago when I still in Florida, I did have a cell phone. However, I didn't have a landline phone. Now I have a landline phone and no cell phone. I honestly don't have a need for a cell phone.

  26. I'm not sure when a photo becomes a selfie. I mean, I've seen many photos of you Ron, and I'm assuming you took many of them yourself.
    Are these not selfies then?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Okay so I will admit. I am someone who will take the occasional selfie. Not because I am full of myself. Mostly because I do not have many pictures of myself and I like to have memories. The people around me are not always willing to take pictures so I make sure I take some myself to keep the memories alive!

  28. My husband says the same, it's the best way to shave.

Yup, I can totally understand that. I too have taken selfies and even posted them on this blog. It's the "excessive selfie trend" that seems to be going on now. That's what I'm referring to.

  31. Yup...preoccupation with getting a photo of ME eating, ME washing MY car, ME at the dentists, ME posting my bills, MEMEME.....sheeeesh. I avoid cameras like the plague. And I can't understand that degree of preoccupation with recording everything for my 'friends' on facebook or twitter or where those 'friends' hang out.
I see people with those camera phones turned to themselves and I no longer volunteer to take the shot for them. Cameras, yes.....phones rarely. And there's a difference between a camera and a phone, at least in my mind. The difference seems to be in the attitude and the degree of humility in the holder of the equipment. That egocentric, social obliviousness seems to prevail with the 'selfie crowd'. It's not the ones taking photos in special places or at special events....or even the ones who quietly and discretely take a photo to get an opinion on a dress before they buy it. It's the ones making a production, the ones oblivious to how socially unacceptable/offensive their 'time and place' is... I think someone needs to pull their phone privileges and send 'em to courses in social etiquette.
I swear....ya put cell phones in some people's hands and they mutate into some other life form. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  32. It is verging on ridiculous, isn't it?! I believe we have become a very narcissistic society in so many ways...and selfies are just another symptom of our "me first" attitude. I detest having my photo taken so this concept is very foreign to me. But, perhaps if I was twenty-something and cute as a ladybug, I'd have a different take on it. However, THAT is not the case! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. YES! So many people have no idea how to use Twitter to maximize its potential. And its potential is NOT sharing what you had for breakfast....or spouting caustic political comments. When used correctly, it can be extremely beneficial (speaking as a marketing/advertising person!)

  34. "And its potential is NOT sharing what you had for breakfast....or spouting caustic political comments. When used correctly, it can be extremely beneficial (speaking as a marketing/advertising person!)"

  35. Hehe you do make me laugh Ron! All those people you mention takiing selfies do they have selfie sticks, because everyone here seemed to get one for Christmas? I have to confess I have been guilty of taking selfies of myself and MWM when there was no-one around to take a photo of the two of us together and my profile pic is actually a selfie too. Don't hate me! xx

  36. " All those people you mention takiing selfies do they have selfie sticks, because everyone here seemed to get one for Christmas?"

I don't know because I had no idea what a selfie stick was until Valerie mentioned it in her comment as well. I looked it up online and finally saw what they were!!!

"I have to confess I have been guilty of taking selfies of myself and MWM when there was no-one around to take a photo of the two of us together and my profile pic is actually a selfie too. Don't hate me!"

No, m'dear...I don't hate you at all because I've taken selfies myself. It's the "excessiveness" of taking them and posting them on every social media that I'm referring to. It's gotten so overdone.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Pearl. Happy Wednesday!

  37. Tee..heee...yes indeed, what is the real scoop on why so many people feel the need to take pic after pic of themselves? Too much time on their hands? Checking for spinach on teeth, maybe lipstick? Love that new hairstyle so much they want lots of shots in case of a bad hair day on the horizon? I do not know but whatever reasons, I think its kind of lame.

Not yours of course Ron, they all made me smile. 😁 And what gorgeous colored eyes you have. Tinted contacts or au natural? I had green contacts years ago (and mauve brown turquoise blue...while dating an optician) they were kind of fun to wear.😁

Any snow left in PA? Have a fab Wednesday and thanks for bringing a 😁 to my day.

  38. Hellooooo there Geraldine!

"Too much time on their hands? Checking for spinach on teeth, maybe lipstick? Love that new hairstyle so much they want lots of shots in case of a bad hair day on the horizon?"

HA! Exactly! I honestly don't think selfies are negative thing, but the way they've become obsessive and constant is what invoked me to share this post. Yesterday, while was on the bus to NYC, I even saw people taking selfies!!!!

"Tinted contacts or au natural? I had green contacts years ago (and mauve brown turquoise blue...while dating an optician) they were kind of fun to wear.😁"

That's really COOL! Thank you :) No, they are not contacts, they're natural. And it's funny because I'm the only one in my family with blue eyes. Everyone else has brown, green or hazel. I LOVE brown eyes!

Yes, it snowed today and I was sooooooo happy! It didn't snow much but I was happy for any. I went walking outside in it!

Ha! I don't get it....I think they are all just WAY TOO FULL of themselves!!! What else could it be?? Perhaps the world really has gone mad? Loved all your selfies Ron...and that picture of you in the elevator...not serial killer material...you still look friendly to me!! Happy Thursday my friend! 44. I have never taken a selfie - mostly because I do not want my image anywhere on the web where my stalker might see me! But I have to say I also don't understand the need to take pics of yourself all the time. Then I have to take the other side, sometimes I wouldn't get to see updated pics of my daughter if it weren't for her taking an occassional selfie!
