Post updates by email:

About five years ago, I purchased my first laptop computer. And when I first got it I used it a lot, however, I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve used it in the past two years. In fact, whenever I do use it, it takes almost 45 minutes to update the software because I’m hardly ever on it.

I initially purchased a laptop because I wanted an extra computer, just in case something happened to my desktop so that I’d have it as a backup. Another reason I purchased it was so that I could have a mobile computer whenever I traveled, or say, if I wanted to take it to a Starbucks while having a cup of coffee. Yet it’s funny, I’ve only used it while traveling a couple of times and I NEVER take to a Starbucks anymore.

Since then, tablets and smartphones have been invented (both of which I do not own), so it seems that many people I talk to lately no longer find the need to have a desktop or even a laptop computer. They use either their tablet or smartphone.

I know I must sound like caveman who is so far behind in technology, but I still prefer using a desktop computer. I do a lot of photo editing and am teaching myself graphic design, so I need a BIG monitor, a keyboard, and a separate mouse. And even when I’m composing a blog post, I like being on my desktop because I need LOTS of space.

Yes, I can see the convenience of using a tablet or smartphone for responding to emails or corresponding on certain social media, but other than that I would feel too confined. Hell, I even find being on my laptop too confining. But I suppose if you are someone who only has a laptop, you eventually get used to it.

Also, I have friends who only have a smartphone and have issues visiting certain websites or watching videos at times; therefore I think a smartphone would be somewhat limiting as your only means of Internet access.

So I’m curious, do you own all of the above mentioned, and if you do, do you use them for different things? Or are you like me, a caveman, and solely prefer using a desktop computer? Please tell me I'm not the only one.

Happy Monday, y'all!

  1. Ron, I still use my desktop a lot. I just find it so much easier to type using a real keyboard, so I do use it for blog posts. I also use it when I need to print something, such as when I order something online. And I agree with you.....I download all photos on the desktop and use it to edit and order photos.

I don't have a smartphone, but I do have an iPad and I use it for just browsing the Internet on the couch or in bed. It's what I use for my social media. I also have different email accounts set up on my iPad so that I don't have to sign in and out of my different accounts all the time (certain email accounts on desktop and different ones on iPad). It's also easy to stick in a small backpack or a large purse if I want to use the Internet elsewhere.

I'll be interested to read how others use their computers!

  2. Laptop and a Kindle for me, Ron. I had a regular desktop computer for a long time then downsized to a laptop from HP. It's been fine for my needs and when I need something portable, Kindle provides a LOT more than just books to read, including internet browsing, docs., ability to print from screen, etc, etc...I LOVE my Kindle HD Fire.

I don't own a cell phone now, but I had a simple one years ago. Don't really miss it. An answering machine is enough for me. Who wants to be available 24/7, via a cell? NOT me!!!

    Very low tech here!!! ;-)

    Have a super week, G

  3. I am probably not one of the "normal" ones...as I have different uses for each of those things! I type the fastest on my desktop and laptop, so I use both of them primarily for blogging and putting together sponsor reviews. When I need to have several windows open at one time...it is very helpful to have a large screen! The laptop is what I use when we are traveling and when at the cottage as the desktop is at home. I use my ipad and iphone ALL the time...and they are with me everywhere I go! They are both used for social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. I have a Kindle Fire HD that I am planning on selling as I really cannot stand the Android system! I have spent a ton of money on Apple apps and find the Apple operating system to be my most favorite. If I could afford it, I would have bought a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air...but I ended up with a Toshiba laptop for $299 which works for me...like I said, it works for blogging and reviews! I do have an original Kindle...yep, the very first one! It still works perfectly if I want to read at the beach and it does have internet access on it as well. I seriously go bonkers when I do not have internet access so I have just added Hotspot to my phone so that I can get internet 24/7 on my ipad by connecting the two. It will be very helpful for me when we are on the road! Very interesting topic Ron! I may just have to poll my readers and see what they have to say about this. I know that many people are ALL Android or ALL Apple. For me, the security updates on the PC are a pain in the neck...like you said, if you don't sign in very often...it takes FOREVER for them to download. OK, THAT was long winded! I hope I have answered your questions!! Happy Monday Ron! xo Jeanne and the girlz

  4. You'll get a variety of interesting replies to this question, Ron. I gave up on my huge desktop some years ago when I went over to a laptop to save space. Ha... that's a joke when I have scanners, printers etc etc attached. At first I found the keyboard a mite strange (an understatement) but got used to. I've had several laptops so it must be okay. I also have a Kindle, an iPad and an iPhone, all of which serve their own purpose. The iPad enables me to do most things on line, except type documents - and even that is now catered for.
However, if I want to do some serious work (and I do a lot) it's the laptop for me. Actually I think the laptop does everything the desktop does.

I read Geraldine's comment about the phone and I agree with her that a carry-round phone can be a nuisance.... but that's what the off button is for - to turn the damn thing off.

Enjoy your week, my friend x

  5. Ronnie, I own a smart phone and a laptop. At work I use a desktop computer. I do not yet own a tablet. I really havent figured out what I would use that for. I mean my laptop is portable enough and I never really have a need to take it anywhere where it would need to be smaller. Plus I HATE writing on small screens. I need space to see and create whatever it is I am writing. I am definitely a fan of the desktop computer but unfortunately in my tiny apartment there just isnt room. So laptop it is for me.

  6. Ron, I have a desktop computer, a laptop AND an iPhone. Like you, I prefer using a desktop if I'm going to be online for an extended period of time, such as online shopping or reading blogs. I barely use my laptop anymore and use my iPhone for things like texting, emails and Facbook. I don't think I could solely use it for everything though. Too small.

Love the animated graphic of the man sitting at the computer LOl!

Interesting topic. Have a wonderful week, Ron x

  8. Hey there Bijoux!

" I still use my desktop a lot. I just find it so much easier to type using a real keyboard, so I do use it for blog posts."

Meeee too! I think it's much easier to type using a real (separate) keyboard. After using my laptop for awhile, I got a tad better at using the keyboard, but I still found myself leaning on the keyboard with my forearms and pressing random keys by accident . Plus, I always used an external mouse because I hated using the touchpad. The only touchpad I found easy to use is on a Mac laptop.

"I do have an iPad and I use it for just browsing the Internet on the couch or in bed. It's also easy to stick in a small backpack or a large purse if I want to use the Internet elsewhere."

Yes, I would almost think an iPad tablet would take the place of using a laptop because you can do practically all the same things and it's lighter, so it's easier to travel with.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, my friend. Have a super week!

  9. Hellooooooo there Geraldine!

"Laptop and a Kindle for me, Ron. Kindle provides a LOT more than just books to read, including internet browsing, docs., ability to print from screen, etc, etc...I LOVE my Kindle HD Fire."

Yes, I would actually think a Kindle tablet could easily take the place of a laptop because you can do so much with it. Plus, it's smaller, so it's more convenient to travel with. And it's ironic you mentioned HP because both my computers are HP's and I love them. They're very reliable and long-lasting computers.

"I don't own a cell phone now, but I had a simple one years ago. Don't really miss it. An answering machine is enough for me. Who wants to be available 24/7, via a cell? NOT me!!!"

  10. Hello there Jeanne!

"I type the fastest on my desktop and laptop, so I use both of them primarily for blogging and putting together sponsor reviews. When I need to have several windows open at one time...it is very helpful to have a large screen!"

I agree! I can type so much faster using my desktop. I got better at using my laptop the longer I used it, but I still prefer typing on a desktop.

" I have a Kindle Fire HD that I am planning on selling as I really cannot stand the Android system! I have spent a ton of money on Apple apps and find the Apple operating system to be my most favorite. If I could afford it, I would have bought a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.."

One of my other readers (Geraldine) also mentioned owning a Kindle Fire HD and LOVES it! If I were to ever get another laptop and use it solely as my computer, I would choose a Mac because the couple of times I used one, I found the touchpad very easy to use. Other than that, I have to use an external mouse on a laptop. I have an HP, which I love, but the touchpad sucks.

"I seriously go bonkers when I do not have internet access so I have just added Hotspot to my phone so that I can get internet 24/7 on my ipad by connecting the two. It will be very helpful for me when we are on the road!"

OMG...me too! I'm seriously thinking of changing my Internet provider and going TOTALLY wireless (with AT&T) because I've been having so many issues with my Internet connection using Verizon.

" the security updates on the PC are a pain in the neck...like you said, if you don't sign in very often...it takes FOREVER for them to download."

HA! Exactly. Even using a laptop, you sit have to plug in scanners, printers, etc., so it still takes up space. But the one really great thing about a laptop is the mobility. I too got a bit better using the keyboard on my laptop the longer I used it, but I still prefer using a separate keyboard.

" I also have a Kindle, an iPad and an iPhone, all of which serve their own purpose. The iPad enables me to do most things on line, except type documents - and even that is now catered for."

Yes, that's the thing about also having a tablet if you have a laptop, I don't see the point because they pretty much do the same thing, don't they? But a tablet is smaller, so perhaps people prefer them because they're easier to travel with.

  15. Ron, being a techie addict, I own all of the above mentioned. And all Macs because my girlfriend is a web designer.

Hands down, I prefer using my laptop (MacBook Air) most of the time. I only use my iPad if I want to surf or read books. I usually take it if I'm hanging out at a coffee shop. My girlfriend mainly uses the iMac desktop we have at home. Both of us carry our iPhones.

Very interesting topic, dude. I'll be curious to read everyone's comments this week.

  16. Hiya Matt!

WOW...you are definitely an Apple lover, aren't you? I've heard so many people who are web designer say that Mac's are the way to go. Several years ago, I was thinking of getting a Mac laptop and almost got one, but decided to go with an HP. One thing I loved about the Mac laptop was the touchpad. It was so easy to use. So perhaps one day, I will get a Mac.

" I only use my iPad if I want to surf or read books."

Yes, several other readers mentioned the same thing. And I can so see using one for that purpose. Plus, they're very lightweight and easy to travel with. I see people using tablets all the time in the city.

  17. When I switched to Apple products a billion years ago I went for a laptop (15 inch screen) but as time went by I found the small screen problematic since I was on the computer for so many hours. About 3 years ago I switched back to a 23 inch iMac - much happier. I use my iPad mainly when I'm in bed and then mostly to play games. Typing on it is not at all easy. So you know, it's just a toy. I have no need of a smartphone at all - I just can't imagine having to read such a tiny screen.

  18. Hey, Ron, I still prefer the desktop. I used to my smartphone the other day to register for a gym class online and I was pressing little buttons for something like 20 minutes. (Hopefully I'll improve!) I'm looking at getting a tablet so I can write outside when--and if!--it gets warmer.

But don't feel badly if you're not racing out to get the latest hot device. Computer companies are like any other business--they want our money! So if you like being Alley-Oop behind the keyboard, knock yourself out!

    Have a cro-magnificent week, buddy!

  19. Ron, I have all of the above. My smartphone is used, mainly for phone calls and texts, my iPad is used for reading and other general stuff, my laptop is hardly ever used, but my desktop is the hub of my life! I would be totally lost without it. I do back up certain things on my iPad and iPhone, but all of my work, be it writing, design, vdeo or photography, is only ever done using my desktop.

  20. Great topic, Ron, and I'm interested to see how your readers weigh in. As one of those techy-types, I gave up my desktop several years ago in favor of a laptop with a 17-inch screen. It's big enough for my needs, and since I kept my HUGE desktop's screen, I have two for when I need them.

I do own a smartphone, which is very convenient for accessing Twitter, the weather, and so on. It's also a great backup for when I don't want to wait on my laptop warming up.

I've been toying with the idea of a tablet, but for now, I just don't see where it could fit in. Maybe when my laptop dies (and we all know they're built with planned obsolescence, don't we??!), I'll see if one of those 2-in-1 thingies is an option.

Don't worry about being a caveman, dear. Technology is changing so rapidly it's a wonder any of us can keep up!

    Happy Monday!

  21. I am attached to my laptop. I use it for writing, blogging, Facebook, research, etc. The desktop is a backup, and used for household finances etc..My smart phone is smarter for me so I don't use that for blogging, ha! I will use it for some things other than calling and texting if I'm not at home. However, I don't use many apps on it because I just don't want to learn how to use them; if I do I might not ever get off my phone!

  22. I am commenting now from my MacBook Air and I love it!!! It's light as... air... lol Okay, maybe not that light, but I do take it from room to room easily enough. I thought the keyboard would be hard to use at first because it is different (smaller) from the desktop one I was used to, but that transition was easy. Speaking of my desktop, it's s.l.o.w. as molasses and that's really the only reason I'm not on it more often. I actually do most all of my photo downloading and editing on it still... just takes awhile.
I have a Toshiba laptop that I got because I needed a newer operating system for a program I had to install for a class and Mac's version wasn't quite the same. I liked that laptop, even though it was bulkier, but Win 8 I hate more than the Devil himself. ha!! Seriously, it's awful (imo) I just put the laptop away when the class was over and haven't bothered with it since.
For my birthday last year, my son got me an iPad. It was such a nice gift and I love him for wanting me to have it and his generosity, but, I feel like it's been almost a waste of money. I use it to listen to music occasionally, and play Candy Crush and Trivia Crack. lol That's really it... so far.
No smart phone. Just an old flip phone. It has a basic camera, which I haven't used much at all, and I can text but it takes me awhile. I'm not that into texting.
As for reading... I use my laptop for emails and news stories. I have a few assorted ebooks downloaded onto the Kindle app but don't really read much that way. I still buy actual books for most all of my pleasure reading.
When our desktop computer finally gives out I'll probably be okay with just using a laptop but we'll see.....

Hello my Philly friend; sorry that I'm responding so late after your post. I just don't go to my blog very often anymore. To be honest after spending 8 -10 hours on a computer for work everyday the last thing I want to do is log back onto one. But to answer your "caveman" question... absolutely you are NOT alone. I myself only own a laptop ( my work computer is a desktop but I'm not allowed to use it for personal stuff) and I find it very hard to type on it. Fortunately I have a wireless mouse bc if I had to rely on that mousepad thingy I think I'd fucking kill myself! I hate that thing, it sucks royally. I can't ever get it to go where I want it to and seems to have a life of it's own. Now I do have a smart phone but I'm not smart enough to use it. Atleast I think it's a smartphone. Not really sure what makes one - one. Let's just say my cell phone has internet capabilities and APPS that I don't know how to use or download. I just could never imagine myself trying to search the web or check emails on that thing, it's too damn small! Who wants to watch a video on that tiny little screen? Certainly not me! And the tablet, shit I don't even know or quite frankly even want to know what one of those gizmo's are. What's the difference between a tablet and a phone? I'm guessing you can't make phone calls on a tablet but who knows maybe you can??? I say to hell with all of it. People are always making fun of me because I rarely have my cell on let alone text someone. I miss the old days... when you weren't home well you weren't home and people just left a message on your answering machine. I don't want to reached 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! I'll call you when I feel like talking to you. I could go on forever but I'll leave you with this... FACEBOOK IS THE DEVIL. Lot's of love to you my friend; stay warm over there on the eastern part of our state!

  24. Do you still have rabbit ears on your TV?!

I've had only a laptop for 5+ years and use it every single day. In fact, it turned into my work computer when I joined my current company a little over two years ago. They only had a hand-me-down PC and I asked if I could use my personal Mac instead. It's not a bad deal, as they gave me a big second monitor, wireless keyboard, mouse, and updated software. I could not live without my laptop! I also own a smart phone and do appreciate the convenience; I mainly use it to respond to emails, visit Facebook and Instagram, play Words With Friends, take photos (yes, it's a camera, too - and a surprisingly good one) and for the apps (I track my diabetes as well as the foods I eat). Couldn't live without that, either. I guess I'm basically an anti-caveman when it comes to this sort of technology.

Yes, Mary, I remember when Ron got you that MacBook Air and you shared about it on your blog. I've seen those laptops in the Apple Store and the look so sleek, slim and feather-light!

" I liked that laptop, even though it was bulkier, but Win 8 I hate more than the Devil himself. ha!! Seriously, it's awful (imo) I just put the laptop away when the class was over and haven't bothered with it since. "

OMG...I've heard the same the from so many people about Win 8, it's HORRIBLE! I still have Win 7 and love it. But I used to have Vista and it was the WORST software ever created. I had that computer for 4 years and hated every minute of it.

"For my birthday last year, my son got me an iPad. It was such a nice gift and I love him for wanting me to have it and his generosity, but, I feel like it's been almost a waste of money."

Even though I don't own a tablet, that's kinda how I feel about it. I mean if you already have a laptop, why would anyone need a tablet too?

"No smart phone. Just an old flip phone. "

I don't even have a cell phone, period. I honestly don't have the need for one.

"When our desktop computer finally gives out I'll probably be okay with just using a laptop but we'll see....."

I think for me, I will always be a desktop person. I've had four HP desktops and I loved every one of them. I've had very good luck with HP products. They're dependable, strong, and seem to last forever.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, my friend. Have a SUPER week and stay warm! I hear we're getting snow tonight and tomorrow.

  33. Yes, Ron, I too prefer using a desktop. Always have, always will. Like you, I need a large monitor and space when I'm on a computer. I do have a laptop but hardly ever use it. I find that I use it when I'm in between purchasing a new desktop after it crashes. I do have a smartphone, but only use it for talking or texting. I use it mainly for work related stuff. I've thought about getting a tablet, only because people say how neat they are, but I feel that it would be a waste since I barely use my laptop.

I'm very conservation with technical gadgets. I only want what I think I'll only have a real need for. I think I was probably one of the last people to even get a computer when they first became popular.

Love the animated graphic! How cute.

  34. Hey ho Robert!

" I too prefer using a desktop. Always have, always will"

    Me too. I guess I'm a die-hard desktop user - HA!

"I do have a laptop but hardly ever use it. I find that I use it when I'm in between purchasing a new desktop after it crashes."

Yes, I've done the same thing between purchasing a new desktop and was so grateful that I had one as a backup.

"I'm very conservation with technical gadgets. I only want what I think I'll have a real need for. I think I was probably one of the last people to even get a computer when they first became popular. Lol"

I am the same way. I appreciate technology, however, I don't feel that I need every single thing that comes out, just because it's out there. And no, you are not one of the last people to get a computer because I didn't get one until 1999 and didn't even get online until 2003, I kid you not!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a fabuloso week!

I work at home a lot and have a large screen - desktop. Funnily enough, at work I have a laptop!

    ReplyDelete
  36. How timely this post is! I was off work for a month and since my ability to get around the house freely was limited, I spent a ton of time on my iPhone: Posting on Facebook, bidding on eBay and responding to emails. I even went over my data for the month which made me think that I should get a tablet. But a tablet, it seems, is really just a larger screened iPhone without the ability to make a call so what's the point?

Cavewoman here. I LOVE my desktop. I have one where all the guts are included in the monitor and sometimes I think, "well, I could take this to Starbucks". But I guess it is a little too big...

I think I'm going to break down and get a laptop so I can start writing again on my lunch hour. I don't have the flexibility that I had at the hospital of doing whatever on my computer. Here, they monitor EVERY keystroke! Very big brother, indeed.

    Stay warm!

  37. Hey there Chrissy!

" But a tablet, it seems, is really just a larger screened iPhone without the ability to make a call so what's the point?"

See, that's the thing about a tablet, it seems to be very similar to either an iPhone or even a smaller laptop. So I don't see the point, other than it's smaller and lighter.

"Cavewoman here. I LOVE my desktop. I have one where all the guts are included in the monitor and sometimes I think, "well, I could take this to Starbucks". But I guess it is a little too big..."

HA! Yes, you and I seem to feel the same way about using a desktop, with separate monitor and mouse. I've seen those all-inclusive desktops and they look so cool.

"I think I'm going to break down and get a laptop so I can start writing again on my lunch hour."

That's one of the great conveniences of having a laptop, although I'm hardly ever on mine. But they are wonderful for stuff like that.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, fellow-caveperson :) Have a super week!

P.S. It's 17 degrees right now and snowing!

  38. Hey there Fiona!

I was curious to see what you used because I know you take a lot photographs and thought you might prefer a desktop for things like editing.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

  39. Ron, yesterday and the day before were freezing, however today it wasn't that bad, even with the snow. At least the sun was out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree, Elaine! I was so surprised when I went outside today and felt the temperature because it wasn't nearly as cold as yesterday and the day before. And yes, can you believe the sunshine today? I took my camera out and got some nice shots of the snow.

  41. I think you probably know my answer to this one Ron.
My phone is practically grafted onto me and my tablet is a wonderful tool (exactly the same Android system, all compatible software) which I use for anything that requires extra detail (photo editing etc) and I've never had any issue with access to web content.
(The sooner the world does away with the pointless and archaic dinosaur that is Flash Player, the better. Although I've never found anything that still needs that nowadays to be worth watching anyway)

Take the plunge Ron. I bet you can buy a decent Android tablet for less than $50 and you'll soon be hooked, I promise.

And no, I still have no computer.

    ReplyDelete
  42. "And no, I still have no computer."

Dale, it blows me away and I'm so impressed that you do everything either on your phone or tablet. I have a friend who also has an Android phone, who for some reason, has problems viewing certain things (like videos) on her phone, so she has to use her laptop to view them.

"The sooner the world does away with the pointless and archaic dinosaur that is Flash Player, the better."

I agree with you that Flasher Player can be a real pain because of the constant updates. There have been times when I couldn't view certain media (even on my desktop computer) without first going through an update.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, buddy. Have an excellent week!

  43. I have an iMac desktop computer because I do a lot of photo processing and graphics. The trackpad on a laptop drives me insane. I do have a smartphone but just for calls texts and, of course, accessing Facebook! The phone camera is connected to Dropbox so I can pull the photos and work on them on a "real" computer. No tablet. I know lots of people who's phone is essentially their computer, but that doesn't really work for me. To each his/her own, I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hey there Lisa!

"The trackpad on a laptop drives me insane."

Yes, it drives me insane too. Which is why I have an external mouse for my laptop. The only touchpad I have ever found easy to use on laptop was on a Mac.

"The phone camera is connected to Dropbox so I can pull the photos and work on them on a "real" computer."

That's a great idea! I also have an account on Dropbox, but only use it for storing backups of my blog.

" No tablet. I know lots of people who's phone is essentially their computer, but that doesn't really work for me. To each his/her own, I suppose."

You're right, to each his/her own. For me though, I don't think I could use a tablet as my computer.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a terrific week!

  45. I'm still chuckling from the "FACEBOOK IS THE WORK OF THE DEVIL" comment. Oh, how I agree on that point. It's corrupting our youth as I type!
Oh, I love my desktop. But it has the unsupported XP on it and, aside from uploading photos and work "Remote desktop" ... it rarely sees me. Fact is we're working on replacing it with something...yet to be determined. I have to have USB ports for camera stuff, and I prefer a keyboard and a good sized monitor. I have a huge one at work, useful for working on two spreadsheets at a time. I love my HP, but have the thought that they need to stick to desktops cuz I went through two of their laptops in less than 3 years time. I like my MAC Air but I haven't seen it for 3 years so it must work good or the Girl woulda told me. LOL! I had nothing good to say about touchscreen anythings. I'm a keyboard queen.....but, when you break a leg you need something besides a desktop. Toe to tip plaster kinda wrecks that one. So himself pushed off this Kindle Fire HD on me. I love it now. I prefer a keyboard for typing, need the big monitor for work, but this wee thing on my lap is easy to use, has excellent speakers, awesome colour, and lets me go anywhere with it shoved in my purse. It won't replace the desktop cuz it lacks programs I need for work, but it's wonderful for reading weblogs at the end of my day and snuggling under bedcovers while I do it.
Takes longer to type things out on the touchpad, but makes up for that in other functions. I've even started to LIKE reading books on it. This from a die hard fan of PAPER.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the desktop ordeal....I'm starting to like the portability of the notebook sized tablets.
Notebooks are out...because of the supported programs....but maybe a tablet?
Oh, decisions,decisions.....ain't it cool that we have the technology to have so many choices?!

Oh.....did you see the meteor this morning that lit up your part of the world? That musta been AWESOME!!

  46. "I'm still chuckling from the "FACEBOOK IS THE WORK OF THE DEVIL" comment."

Yes, I laughed too, Mel!! Wasn't that hysterical?

"I have to have USB ports for camera stuff, and I prefer a keyboard and a good sized monitor."

Meee too! That's why I LOVE my desktop. And mine is an HP too! I've had very good luck with HP products. All of my desktops were/are HP, as well as my laptop.

"So himself pushed off this Kindle Fire HD on me. I love it now. I prefer a keyboard for typing, need the big monitor for work, but this wee thing on my lap is easy to use, has excellent speakers, awesome colour, and lets me go anywhere with it shoved in my purse."

That is sooooooo cool! And to me, a tablet sounds very much like a laptop, so why even have a laptop?

"I've even started to LIKE reading books on it. This from a die hard fan of PAPER."

Yes, A LOT of people say that, they really like reading books on it.

"Notebooks are out...because of the supported programs..."

I agree. Besides, they are way too small to have as a laptop.

"Oh.....did you see the meteor this morning that lit up your part of the world? That musta been AWESOME!!"

Oh shucks, no I didn't. In fact, I didn't even hear about the meter. But then again, you're talking to someone never watches the news. Shame on me.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Happy Wednesday to ya!

  47. I use an ancient laptop while sitting on my bed, and find that quite comfortable. But I LOVE using a regular old pc at work... heck, that is my job - fixing those things all day every day! And yup, with my "old eyes" a nice big monitor just WORKS.

I build surface pro's at work now and the minute I turn one on I have to decrease the screen resolution to the LOWEST because it makes everything giant on the screen - otherwise I can't read it. The surface pro's are COOL but I would never want one as my only computer.

I have an iphone 5 and I use that for quick looks at facebook and for calls/messaging. We are monitored at work for internet use so I NEVER use the internet at work. If I need a quick lookup of something I use my phone. :)

Katherine, don't you love a BIG monitor? The one I have is 32 inches and it's so easy to see and read.

"I build surface pro's at work now and the minute I turn one on I have to decrease the screen resolution to the LOWEST because it makes everything giant on the screen - otherwise I can't read it. The surface pro's are COOL but I would never want one as my only computer."

WOW...I had no idea you built surface pro's at work. That is so cool! And I'm very impressed!

"We are monitored at work for internet use so I NEVER use the internet at work. If I need a quick lookup of something I use my phone. :)"

Yes, I think most people are monitored at work for the Internet. I use the computer at work for work-related stuff, but never for personal stuff.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a FAB weekend!

  49. I have all of the above! I don't use the desktop anymore, MWM uses that. My laptop I use for typing up blog posts because it's the only way I can upload photos and I also use it for typing longer emails as I find it easier on the larger keyboard and if I need to print anything. Day to day I use a tablet for browsing and social media and smart phone for texts and calls.

I think it's so interesting to read everyone's preferences on how they use a laptop versus a desktop, and tablet versus their smartphone

I think it's a good thing that we have these options.

Thanks so much for stopping by, m'dear. Have a lovely weekend!

  51. I'm on my laptop right now (a Macbook Air). I like it because I can be on the couch in front of the TV. And I also use it at work. I have a desktop (an iMac) that I prefer to do my photo work on. I like the bigger screen. I also have a tablet (an iPad) that I use when I want something ultra portable. I use it for email and so on, and I also have a kindle app on it so I can use it as a reader. And I have an iPhone. I never blog on it or use it for reading. But with both it and the iPad, I often use the dictation function instead of typing. And I mention the brands only because the fact that they are all apple products means they sync with each other so I can text/call/take notes on any of them and everything I do on one can show up on the others.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ooooo....you have Mac's?

" And I mention the brands only because the fact that they are all apple products means they sync with each other so I can text/call/take notes on any of them and everything I do on one can show up on the others."

Yes, so I can see why you have all Apple products because they are interconnected. VERY smart! If I were to ever get a Mac product, I would most likely start with an iMac because like you, I prefer doing my photo editing and graphic designs on a desktop.

  53. I have a desktop & a laptop plus an e-reader. I never use the desktop anymore, in fact we're looking at cleaning everything off it & maybe selling it. I almost exclusively use my laptop & my hubby has the same one. We both sit in front of our laptops in front of the TV. A lot of times we use our laptops to play a few FB games, so we ordered gamer types of laptops & we have separate wireless mouse(s). This is the way we have been working for the last couple of years, but I would like to get a tablet that I could use to read my e-books & use as a laptop when I'm away from home (so I could do things like read blog posts in waiting rooms, etc.)

Yes, Benze, I think a lot of people enjoy using their laptops for that same reason - they're portable, lightweight and wireless.

It's been so interesting to read people's preferences.

I think I'm probably one of the only people who doesn't have a smartphone or a tablet and still prefers working on a desktop.
