Post updates by email:

Last summer I shared a post on my five favorite romantic comedy films in which one of my longtime blogging friends, Mary @ Mary Says, mentioned something in her comment about the film, French Kiss, with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. And being such a big fan of them both, I couldn’t believe I had never seen the 1995 film.

Well, last weekend I went to F.Y.E. and purchased the DVD. And I have to say, I am so glad I did and that it's now part of my film collection because I thoroughly enjoyed it. So thanks for the recommendation, Mary!

But what I found perplexing after doing some online research was that the film got very mixed reviews when it was first released; several of which were overall negative. And to me, I couldn’t understand it because I thought the film was absolutely delightful, showcasing the diverse talent of both leading actors. Not only did I love the comedy, but I also enjoyed the gradual buildup to the romance.

Meg Ryan had me laughing so hard that I found myself rewinding several of her scenes to view them again. And when Kevin Kline first appeared in the film, I didn’t even know it was him because not only did he not resemble himself, but his French accent was so authentic that I thought it was someone else.

French Kiss is about Kate (Meg Ryan) who flies to France to confront her straying fiancé Charlie (Timothy Hutton). On the plane she meets Luc (Kevin Kline), an unshaven French jewel thief who hides a diamond bracelet in her luggage and then must follow her halfway across France to get it back. As an excuse he pretends to help her win her man back - but along the way, of course, they fall in love, and we have to wait until they figure that out.

Now, because I’m someone who is very apprehensive about flying, I could so identify with Kate’s phobia. OMG…I literally could not stop laughing at the scene on the plane to France. Meg Ryan was so freakin' funny, I had tears rolling down my face.

Here are some photographs from various scenes in the film...

In this scene, when Kate overlooks that she's lactose intolerant, her intestines go into painful spasms after eating copious amounts of French cheese. HILARIOUS scene!

Kate: "Spasm!...spasm!"

If you haven't already seen the film, this clip won't make much sense. But I had to share it because of the brilliant way Meg Ryan delivers her lines; imitating Kevin Kline's character. This scene is one that I rewound over and over again, and laughed until I thought my sides would split...

Bwhahahahahahahahahaha!

These last collages are from scenes toward the end of the film...

Concluding of course, with a French kiss...

So, if you're ever in the mood for a superb romantic comedy, I can highly recommend, French Kiss.

I leave you with the trailer...

Avoir un grand week-end!
*translation: Have a great weekend!

  1. I absolutely love that film! I haven't seen it in a very long time...I have it in the VHS version at the cottage...I think the last time I saw it was in the 90's! I do LOVE Meg Ryan though...I really wonder why she has not been around lately?? I must google her and see what's up! Isn't it funny when all of a sudden you think of an actress and say, hey - whatever happened to so and so?? I truly enjoy romantic comedies though and I am also grateful that my husband and I switch off weeks on who gets to pick the movie we are going to see. Last week we saw a movie about the Kingsman Secret Service so...next time it's my pick! I think it might be The Hot Tub Time Machine 2!!! bwahahahahaha!! Happy Friday Ron! xo

  2. I hadn't heard of this film. I love Meg Ryan so I should have come across it. Maybe it's not too late. Maybe it would provide me with a little light relief as well as give me a laugh or two. It's ages since I watched a movie. Lately, I've gone into quiet mode - meaning I like to escape too much sound. My better half is very hard of hearing so I like to escape into silence. So, I need to watch a movie and lose myself in it.

    Have a great weekend.

  3. I remember seeing that movie! I always liked both Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline, plus I love all things French, so it was a great movie for me.

    Enjoy your weekend, Ron!

  4. Good morning, neighbor! Hey, thanks for that shout out!! Sheesh, I feel like I have to hurry up and get something interesting posted at my blog in case anyone stops by. haha
Ooh, yes, I do love this film. Of course, I have it on dvd, but will watch if it's on any of the movie channels. Just delightful! They were so good together. And, what's hidden with the necklace... the reason he was going to pawn it in the first place, right! Yeah, he's a thief, but a romantic one. ;) The scene when they are in his old bedroom and he asks her to taste and describe the wine.... 'A bold wine with a hint of sophistication and lacking in pretension.... actually, I was just talking about myself'. LOL But as she's smelling the aromas of from the little box he made as a project and then tastes them in the wine. Ahhh!!! Love that scene. And so many others. Could go on and on.
I'm so glad you liked this movie, Ron. I'll have to try and come up with some others you may like. Ooh... did you see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? The sequel comes out next month (I think). Richare Gere is in that one. We'll be at the theater!
Have a wonderful weekend. Muuahhh, KISS, from over the bridge. Not a french one though. ;) x

  6. Hey, Ron, I liked this film, too. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember enjoying it. And, like you, I related to Meg Ryan's fear of flying. And that's why, boys and girls, Uncle Robert drops Xanax every time he gets on a plane!

It's amazing how you'll stumble upon a film you absolutely love only to find that it was poorly received when it first came out. Sometimes it's just a matter of bad timing, but I confess that I like having my own little gem to myself. I'm greedy!

Great post, buddy. Please keep sharing your reviews and have a great weekend, mom ami!

  7. Ron, I don't own many films but this is one I do own. I am such a Mel Ryan fan and this was one of my favorites. And you're right, she's hysterical in this role. And so is Kevin Kline. They make such a cute couple because they are such opposites yet, eventually you see that they were meant for each other. I love the scene in the plane, and also the one in the train! I'm glad you shared the clip because I laughed seeing it again. "You people make my ass twitch." LOL!

I think I may have to watch this film again this weekend. Great review!

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron x

  8. I am ALWAYS looking for a good chic flick! And as a matter of fact on the docket today is to get Breakfast at Tiffany's in so I can share a blog post about it on Monday thanks to your awesome reminder that it is a must see! This will have to go on the list as well because it looks awesome! Thank you so much for the awesome movie tips my friend!

  9. Ron, it's been years since I've seen this film. My husband and I went to see it together. I had to drag him because he's not much for romantic comedies. He's more of an action film type guy, but even he enjoyed it. Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline were so good together in this film. Thanks for sharing the film clip because I forgot about that scene. I watched it two times. Hysterical!

    Have a great weekend!

  10. Hey there Jeanne!

    Isn't it a GREAT film?

".I have it in the VHS version at the cottage...I think the last time I saw it was in the 90's!"

Yes, I still have MANY of my films on VHS. I would love to get them on DVD because they are so much easier to store, however, a lot of older films have not been transferred.

" I do LOVE Meg Ryan though...I really wonder why she has not been around lately??"

The last film I saw her in was, The Women. She doesn't seem to do much acting anymore. And that's a shame because I really like her.

" I am also grateful that my husband and I switch off weeks on who gets to pick the movie we are going to see. Last week we saw a movie about the Kingsman Secret Service so...next time it's my pick! I think it might be The Hot Tub Time Machine 2!!! bwahahahahaha!!"

OMG...how funny! I've not seen either one of those films, but I'll Google them sometime this weekend. The Hot Tub Time Machine sounds hilarious!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super weekend!

If you like Meg Ryan, I think you would really enjoy this film. She faaaaaabulous! And so is Kevin Kline.

"So, I need to watch a movie and lose myself in it."

Yes, it's definitely a film in which you'll lose yourself in it. It's a great film if you just want to sit back and have some laughs. Purely entertainment.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely weekend!

    X to you and Joe

P.S. And as Mary shared in her comment below, you can find the whole movie on You Tube!

  13. Good morning neighbor!

You are so welcome! I was walking past F.Y.E. last weekend so I decided to stop by and see if their were any films I wanted to buy. As I was walking through the 'comedy' section, I suddenly thought of your recommendation and searched for French Kiss. And low and behold, they had ONE copy, so I grabbed it!

"The scene when they are in his old bedroom and he asks her to taste and describe the wine.... 'A bold wine with a hint of sophistication and lacking in pretension.... actually, I was just talking about myself'. LOL"

HA! Yes, that's another GREAT scene!

" Ooh... did you see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? The sequel comes out next month (I think). Richare Gere is in that one. We'll be at the theater!"

No, I haven't. But I love Richard Gere, so I will also look for that one most definitely!

Thanks so much for stopping by and for the recommendations, my friend. Have a faaaaaaaabulous weekend!

You've seen it? Wasn't it a GREAT film?

"And, like you, I related to Meg Ryan's fear of flying. And that's why, boys and girls, Uncle Robert drops Xanax every time he gets on a plane!"

Bwhahahahhahahaha! OMG...that scene on the plane flying to France made me laugh my ass off.

"It's amazing how you'll stumble upon a film you absolutely love only to find that it was poorly received when it first came out. Sometimes it's just a matter of bad timing, but I confess that I like having my own little gem to myself. I'm greedy!"

Amen! There have been many films that were given poor reviews which I ended up loving. I guess it's a matter of taste, hu?

  17. RG wasn't in the first one, and you'de probably have to see the original to understand the characters, etc. Hey... send me your addy again via email and I will loan you my copy. If you want. That way it's only a bit of shipping to mail back to me vs. buying it. It might not be as inexpensive as FK being only a few years old. It would be no trouble to send over to you. :) x

  18. Sounds like a fun movie. I've never seen it but I might give it a try after reading this post. You know me Ron, if it's not black and white, 40's or 50's vintage, I often don't get around to seeing these "new" flicks. ;-)

I don't know why that it, I just LOVE old movies, always have, always will.

Right now, viewing my way through a Film Noir collection of 10 movies that has to be the best Amazon bargain of it's kind, in a long time. $10 for the set!!! And good sound and picture quality. Last night we watched: D.O.A. with Edmond O'Brien and Scarlet Street with Edward G. Robinson, both were terrif.

Sorry...I digress. Isn't Meg Ryan adorable? She looks so cute in this photos/clip. I wonder if she'll ever look old? I've not seen a recent photo of her.

Have a grand weekend Ron! :-)

  19. I missed this film, too, Ron, probably because Domer was just a wee lad and he needed me more at home.

Generally, I love Meg Ryan (her shaggy hairstyles are so cute!), and she's a good actress. So I'll have to add this one to my must-see list -- thanks for the recommendation!

    Have a delightful weekend { you }

  20. I'm pretty sure I've seen the movie, but it was a long time ago. Probably 1995, when it came out, and never since. May have to add this back to my queue based on the fact that you had tears of laughter running down your face.

Have an awesome weekend, my friend!

  21. Ron, I've not see this film, but anything Kevin Kline is in, I'll watch. He's one my favorite actors because he's so diverse in all his films. Did you ever see the movie, In and Out? Hilarious film! He and Joan Cusack were great together! And thanks for sharing the short movie clip of Meg Ryan. I laughed out loud!

    Great review, dude!

  22. Hola Denise!

You own this film too? I've seen Meg Ryan paired with Tom Hanks and Billy Crystal, but never Kevin Kline. Yes, they made a great at-odds couple yet, they eventually developed an attraction for each other. I love when that happens in a movie!

"You people make my ass twitch." LOL!"

Wasn't that HILARIOUS? She was so spot on in her imitation

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a fantastic weekend!

"Thanks for sharing the film clip because I forgot about that scene. I watched it two times. Hysterical!"

OMG...she is SO funny in that scene! I found that clip on You Tube and was so happy when I did because it's one of my favorite moments in the film.

I'm kinda the same way when it comes to films. I love older, black and white films. However, this one is faaaaaaaaabulous! It's the kind of film you watch when you're in the mood to just sit back with a nice glass of wine and simply laugh.

" viewing my way through a Film Noir collection of 10 movies that has to be the best Amazon bargain of it's kind, in a long time. $10 for the set!!!"

WOW...sounds like a great collection! I too like Film Noir. And speaking of Edmond O'Brien, my mother was a big fan of his.

" Isn't Meg Ryan adorable? She looks so cute in this photos/clip. I wonder if she'll ever look old? I've not seen a recent photo of her."

Adorable indeed! The last film I saw her in (The Women) she had had some plastic surgery done and in my opinion, it didn't look too good. You can Google her name and you should find a recent picture of her. I still think she's cute, but you can definitely see the work she's had done.

I'm going to see if I can find this on Netflix. If not, there is an F.Y.E. in a mall not too far from where I live and I'll just buy it.

I got it at F.Y.E. for $6.99, which I thought was very inexpensive. And it's one of those films that I know I'll be watching over again.

And yes, it's FREEZING here. The past couple of days it's been in the minuses! We may be getting some snow tomorrow and Sunday.

  33. We went to see Marigold twice in the theater, then Ron was on a GA road trip and I went again by myself. Then I got it on dvd and watched it probably twice. Then it came on the movie channels so there are a few more views. I adore Judi Dench and Maggie Smith... oh, they were all good in their own way.
Yes, okay, put it on your purchase list. I'm sure you'll love it! :)

Are you watching The Oscars? But of course? Who are you rooting for? me? Julianne Moore, best actress, Eddie Redmayne, best actor, and though I don't think it's going to win, The Grand Budapest Hotel for Best Picture. Hilarious! And today saw The Imitation Game. Brilliant, Ron! Highly recommend!

And today saw The Imitation Game. Brilliant, Ron! Highly recommend!"

I've not heard of that film but I just Googled it and read a synopsis. WOW....looks VERY interesting! I will see if I can find it in the video store and purchase it. I noticed that Keira Knightley is in it. LOVE her!
