Tell me something...

just HOW white do people need to get their teeth before I have to put my sunglasses on and a thick layer of sunblock because the glare is causing me to squint as if I were standing two inches from a mouth filled with 900 watt light bulbs?

I don't know whether you've noticed over the past several years, but many people seem to be either getting their teeth professionally whitened, or are using those at-home teeth whitening kits. I've never seen so many BRIGHT WHITE NEON teeth in all my life.

And I'm sorry, but to me it looks rather freakish because no one is even born with teeth THAT white.

Whenever I'm talking with someone who has obviously been using some kind of teeth-whitening procedure, all I do is stare at their mouth because it's such a distraction.

Call me strange, I honestly don't mind teeth with a tiny bit of normal staining because they look like they've been lived-in, not teeth that are so pristinely white it appears as though they've never been used.

Yes, I'm all for practicing good oral hygiene and taking care of our teeth so that they don't end up looking overly-stained like these...

However, I find these next teeth excessive. Not only because they're sooooooo WHITE, but also because they look too perfect...

Hell, they don't even look like teeth, they look like piano keys...

This final photograph is an example of what I feel are reasonably white teeth because they don't cause me to cover my eyes from blindness...

No, I'm not into 900 WATT teeth. Because quite frankly, I don't fancy walking around all day wearing sunglasses, protecting my retina...

Have a fantabulous weekend everyone!

Oh, I agree. And why would anyone want to have chemicals and bleach on their teeth anyway? I blame Hollywood - all the actors have dazzling white teeth! ;-)

  2. I wondered how long it would be before someone other than me complained. Honestly, I agree with you one hundred percent on this subject. I am reminded of a woman who gets her hair done the same day as me. Now, she is either older than me or the same age, with massive wrinkles from forehead to chin, and STARTLING WHITE TEETH that look hideous on such an aged and lined skin. I want to puke every time she opens her mouth! It's no better on younger people.

Yet another fad that people can't leave alone. You would think it was a sin to be the odd one out. Grrr!

Apart from that, let us avoid all people with white teeth and enjoy the weekend.

  3. I have never really noticed anyone with teeth THAT white, Ron. My kids and I have tried using the various white strips and honestly, none of us can see any improvement whatsoever. And the damn things cost a small fortune. You must be seeing professional work!

  4. Ron, I was ROL reading this post because I used to work with a girl who had her teeth professionally whitened a few times a year and then use at-home kits in between. She was obsessed with having teeth the whitest she could get them. NEON!

Like you, I don't mind a tiny bit of normal staining or even teeth that are not perfectly straight. Another obsession right now are dental veeners, have you noticed? They look like the teeth in that photo collage.

Hilarious post, Ron! Thanks for the laughs this morning. Have a wonderful weekend x

  5. Ron, I agree with you about this! There is white and then there is WHITE. And have you ever seen the price of those teeth whitening systems in the store? They are so expensive! I often question how safe they are too.

"No, I'm not into 900 WATT teeth. Because quite frankly, I don't fancy walking around all day wearing sunglasses, protecting my retina..." You are so funny! I shared your post with my husband and he laughed.

Can you believe it's the first day of spring and it's snowing?

OMG...that made me laugh out loud because you're so right! On anyone, young or old, teeth THAT white just looks so weird to me.

"Yet another fad that people can't leave alone. You would think it was a sin to be the odd one out. Grrr!"

Yes, I'm the odd one out as well.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a terrific weekend!

OMG, I see them all the time, I kid you not. And over the past couple of years, more and more.

"My kids and I have tried using the various white strips and honestly, none of us can see any improvement whatsoever. And the damn things cost a small fortune."

I always wondered if those worked because I see them in Walgreens in the toothpaste aisle. And yes! I cannot believe how expensive they are, like, $50-60!

I love this statement, Ron, and it's soooo true! A neighbor of mine works in the dental profession and has startling WHITE teeth. Every time I see her, she flashes those pearlies and makes me want to grab sunglasses!

These misguided folks think they look GOOD, but I wonder how much damage they're doing to their teeth. Once those babies are gone, you know, they're gone!

Great subject, my friend. Have a SPARKLING weekend, ha!

Funny you mentioned that because I used to work with a guy who would wear teeth whitening strips AT WORK, I kid you not!

"Another obsession right now are dental veeners, have you noticed? They look like the teeth in that photo collage."

Yes, veeners are huge right now. In fact, the dentist I go to specializing in cosmetic dentistry and offers that service.

  13. "Turn down your teeth!"--Brilliant! Well, Ron, you really took a bite out of this topic. I haven't really noticed the white tooth movement, but I'm not surprised. People are desperate to be something other than what they are.

Good oral hygiene is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, but four-alarm chompers are downright frightening. Turn it down, people!

Have a cavity-free weekend, buddy, and don't gum up the works!

Yes I have, and gasp at the price! I too wonder how safe they are and if they work.

"Can you believe it's the first day of spring and it's snowing?"

I know, can you BELIEVE it?!? I'm looking out my window right now and it's really coming down. They say 3-6 inches. I'm not really surprised though because March can be very strange with the weather.

    HAHAHAHA! You too?

I have a relative who works in the dental profession (for an oral surgeon) and even she doesn't have her teeth whitening because she agrees, it's just too much.

"I wonder how much damage they're doing to their teeth. Once those babies are gone, you know, they're gone!"

I use Rembrandt toothpaste because it seems to keep my teeth fairly white. But I wouldn't go so far as to have them professionally whitened or use those at-home kits.

Matt, I use the same toothpaste! And I agree, it keeps my teeth fairly white. But even my dental hygienist said that no toothpaste or even having your teeth professionally cleaned will remove all stains. You have to have them professional whitened for that.

  25. Ron, I love when you share these commentaries, they're so damn funny!

"Hell, they don't even look like teeth, they look like piano keys..." Lol! They do!

I've never had my teeth professionally whitened, but I have tried those strips when they first came out (either Colgate or Crest) and I didn't see a huge difference. I've been blessed with white teeth that don't build up stains or plaque much. The dental hygienist I go to each year tells me that my teeth are the easiest teeth she's ever cleaned. I just use a regular toothpaste and floss. Seems to do the trick!

I love the light bulb picture!

  27. Hey ho Robert!

" but I have tried those strips when they first came out (either Colgate or Crest) and I didn't see a huge difference."

Yes, several people I've spoken to said the same thing. However, the ones they say do work are the kits with the bleaching trays.

" I've been blessed with white teeth that don't build up stains or plaque much. The dental hygienist I go to each year tells me that my teeth are the easiest teeth she's ever cleaned. I just use a regular toothpaste and floss. Seems to do the trick!"

That's AWESOME! My teeth build up stain and plaque rather quickly, so I have to be diligent about brushes, flossing, and rinsing everyday. I use Rembrandt toothpaste which helps a lot, but it still doesn't make my teeth WHITE-WHITE.

Isn't that light bulb picture clever? I found it online. I think it's an ad for a toothpaste.

Same here. I use Rembrandt toothpaste, which is great for coffee and wine drinkers because it really helps to prevent heavy staining. However, I've never used whitening kits.

  33. Oh, I hear ya Ron and I couldn't agree more.

This white teeth obsession is going way too far, for some people.

I LOVE clean, even teeth, they look so nice and add so much to a person's appearance. But WHITE WHITE, looks like dentures or overdone crowns. There is such a thing as too much, in this case.

My idea of beautiful teeth is Jackie Kennedy's. Did you ever note her lovely, small straight teeth in photos? Obviously not capped, just lovely natural teeth.

I did get my teeth professionally whitened a couple of times, years ago but even then I wondered about this process weakening my tooth enamel. And in the big picture, isn't that the most important thing? Having healthy teeth that last? I'm sticking with my Jason's Natural Whitening Toothpaste (no bad ingredients!) and professional cleanings from now on, but no more whitening treatments.

VERY good post! Love your dazzling photo at the end too. :-)

Hope the sun is shining down in PA. Wow, still snow!!!

Thanks for your kind words re: my spring collage too, most appreciated, coming from such a talented photographer, like you! :-)

Yes, my feelings exactly, Geraldine. It's not only that they're overly white, but they also look too perfect.

"My idea of beautiful teeth is Jackie Kennedy's. Did you ever note her lovely, small straight teeth in photos? Obviously not capped, just lovely natural teeth."

Do you know, I don't think I ever noticed her teeth so before I left this comment, I Googled images of her and you're right...she did have beautiful teeth that were 'natural-looking."

I've never tried professional teeth whitening, but I use Rembrandt toothpaste which really helps to keep staining and tartar down to a minimum. It has papaya enzyme in it which works to gently but effectively. Love that toothpaste! And I use sea salt and baking soda in water as my mouth wash.

"Hope the sun is shining down in PA. Wow, still snow!!!"

Yes, today was gorgeous. Sunny and much warmer than yesterday.

  36. Yep....overkill. And probably irresponsible, when it comes to dental hygiene according to our dentist. And how can anyone not understand that, given the contents of the product.
Besides, it looks silly. :-/ Just my humble opinion.
We still have a culture that cares too much about how they look and not enough about the realities of what's goiing on around them. *sigh* Human beings are silly sometimes.

  45. Absolutely - it's like they have a mouth full of chiclets. I admit, give my deep love of chocolate and red wine, I occasionally slap a white strip on y teeth - but only to the point of havin normal tooth color. I don't want them looking unnatural. I've had that same experience of staring at someone's teeth because they are bizarrely white.

Yes, I'm the same way when it comes to my love chocolate and red wine. And like you, I do use Rembrandt toothpaste which is a whitening toothpaste, so I understand why you would use the white strips. I like my teeth white, but not to the point of looking unnaturally white.

  47. I am so in tune with you on this. We ran into a friend a while back, who had obviously had a lot of work done on his teeth In addition, they were BLINDINGLY white. He smiled many times, with a bigger smile than I'd ever seen him use before. I knew exactly what my wife was thinking. But wait! That's not all. He used to green/brown eyes. Now they were ice water blue. He might have gotten away with that, but you know how sometimes people who wear contacts have this wide eyed look all the time? Like they are forcing them to be larger? Well, he was doing that also. I have no idea what this stuff was all about, but it was actually pretty sad (and funny).

Yes Pat, I notice more and more people wearing colored contacts to change the color of their eyes. But it's funny because you can always tell because the color is WAY to bright and looks artificial; especially when they wear the BLUE or GREEN contacts!
