If I had to choose a favorite color (other than my Gothic obsession with the color black), it would be green.

There is something about green that I find energizing and relaxing simultaneously.

I know this may sound strange, but I believe that color can very much effect our feelings and emotions. And I believe this because of my involvement with energy work, and know that every color vibrates with a distinctive energy.

Think about it, how do feel when you're exposed to certain colors? For instance, how do feel when you see the color red? Does it make you feel happy and energized, or does it make you feel irritable and anxious? For me, it's the latter. I don't mind red in small accents, but it's not a color that I can be exposed to for long periods of time.

Color is very powerful and can be used in many different ways to create and effect moods.

While doing some research for this post, I came across a very interesting website, Sensational Color, which touches on color meaning, symbolism and psychology.

I also found another website that shared information on the color green.

Green Represents:

Harmony and balance: Green is the great balancer of our mental, emotional and physical energies which is why there is so much green on our planet. Green is the heart center of the body.

Growth: As in nature, green leaves are an indication the plant is still growing.

Hope: Green is the anticipation of things to come.

Effects of Green:

Rejuvenating: The color green revitalizes us when we are physically, mentally or emotionally exhausted.

Nurturing: Because of its link with the heart, green urges us to nurture others. Green is also nurturing to us - another reason why it is the most predominant color on earth.

Dependable, agreeable and diplomatic: The color green helps us to see situations clearly from all sides.

After reading this, I realized why I'm so attracted to green. It's an ideal color for someone like me, who strives for balance.

Green seems to complement and ground me.

Here are some photographs of various shades of green...

(my dinner plates, cups and saucers)

So contrary to Kermit the Frog, who says, "It's not that easy being green."

I think green ROCKS!

Have a colorful Monday, y'all!

P.S. Please feel free to share some of your own favorite colors and how they effect you.

  1. Aah Green, my favourite colour. Honestly, I love it. It is SO soothing. People suffering from eye strain feel the benefit when they look at something green, as do those suffering any other kind of strain.

My aunt, who was of nervous disposition, wore a lot of green and was criticised for it. She told everyone she felt better in green than any other colour. I also new a girl who wanted to get married in a green outfit but everyone told her it was an unlucky colour. What rubbish. Did they never look at the countryside and see all the trees and shrubs. Anything goes with nature's colour and thank goodness for that. BTW the girl did wear green and lived happily ever after.

Just before reading your post I was outside looking at the front garden. The lawn is full of green moss and I see some lovely bluebells growing there. All done by nature itself. The sight made me feel good.

Happy Monday (it's a bank holiday here) x

  2. I love the jewel tones, but a plum shade of purple is my favorite, followed by burgundy. Maybe I just love wine too much?

    Enjoy your Spring green, Ron!

  3. What an interesting post, Ron! I too believe that color can effect our feelings and emotions. Whenever I'm sick or feeling blah, I find that wearing certain colors help me feel better. Some of my favorite colors are purple, blue and pink. I wear darker shades in the winter and brighter or pastel shades in the summer. Orange is my least favorite, yet I have a GF who loves the color and looks great wearing it. I'm going to take a look at the link you shared because it sounds fascinating.

    Love the picture of Kermit!

Have a wonderful week, Ron x

    Beautiful colors indeed!

"Maybe I just love wine too much?"

HAHAHAHAHA! Cracked me up! Hey, maybe that's why I too love wine so much. Because as you know, I only drink dark burgundy wines.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

  5. Fascinating post, Ron. I'm amazed at the importance of color in our lives. There's a whole science here that most people know nothing about.

I used to be a fan of red, but like you, I prefer it now only in small doses. Thanks to you, I think I will switch my allegiance to green, so I can look surround myself with hope, growth, and harmony.

Take care, buddy, and have a colorful week!

  6. Hola Denise!

"Whenever I'm sick or feeling blah, I find that wearing certain colors help me feel better."

Yes, I truly believe that colors DO help the way we feel, whether it be physically or mentally.

"Some of my favorite colors are purple, blue and pink."

Great colors! Purple is such a powerful color.

"Orange is my least favorite, yet I have a GF who loves the color and looks great wearing it."

I'm not a big fan of orange myself, although I love oranges!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a wonderful week too!

  7. What a fascinating post topic, Ron! Like you, being Gothic obsessed, black is my favorite color. But I also like deep purple, burgundy and russet. I tend to be more attracted to darker tones. Even green, I like forest shades. Can you tell I'm a total GOTH?

Beautiful photographs of the green leaves. Love the fly. And what is that last photo?

  8. Hey there Rob!

" I'm amazed at the importance of color in our lives. There's a whole science here that most people know nothing about."

You're right. And it wasn't until I started my investigation of energy work, did I really begin to understand how much color CAN effect us because every color vibrates with a distinctive energy. Which is why we are attracted to some colors and not others.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a fantabulous week!

  9. Hey there Matt!

" Like you, being Gothic obsessed, black is my favorite color."

Yes, black will always be my favorite color, hands down. Outside of my blue jeans, practically all on my other clothing is black. Yet, my apartment has a lot of green, earth tone and natural accents.

"And what is that last photo?"

That's the base of an old lamp post that sits outside of Philadelphia's City Hall. The architecture there is stunning!

  10. Ron, I love your dinner plates, cups and saucers. Where did you get them? I love green too. And in all shades. My other favorite colors are yellow and lavender. I like red, but like you, in accents. I once knew a woman who had three walls in her den painted completely red. It was way too much stimulation.

Very interesting topic. And I do believe there is something to color and how it effects us differently.

    Love Kermit the Frog!

  11. Hello there Elaine!

I got the plates from Target before I moved back to Philly. The cups and saucers I purchased from Williams-Sonoma when I worked there in 2002-3.

"My other favorite colors are yellow and lavender."

Two FAB colors! Isn't lavender a lovely color?

" I once knew a woman who had three walls in her den painted completely red. It was way too much stimulation."

OMG...I don't think I could take three walls painted red. I don't think I could even handle ONE - HA!

Love me some Kermit the Frog!

Green is a great colour! I read somewhere that green is used in hospitals to calm patients and help them feel positive. I love all bright colours - ones that give me energy!

  13. Ron, you must have read my mind by posting about GREEN today! I love green. Blue, too. In fact, as a web designer, color is a VERY important part of my world! One of the first questions I insist a new client answer is what colors they want in their website. Color has a way of attracting the right business (and repelling potential customers, if it's not used judiciously!)

I so love your green dinnerware. I've always heard that you should pick out plates only after you've imagined a cooked egg on them -- and I think a cooked egg would look SPLENDID on those dark green plates!!

Have a perfectly balanced week, my friend!

  15. I love green, too. It was my first "favorite color" and is one of the things I enjoy most about living in the PNW! I've since graduated to orange, but will always have a soft spot for cool, mossy, verdant green.

  16. What an interesting link you provided...chocked full of information. Can't wait to really dig into the sight. I used (and still do to an extent) to adore purple. Now, I seem to have drifted more toward turquoise though.

  17. Ron, I'm a green fan too! In fact, you should see my apartment, I have different shades of green (sage, olive and moss) mixed with neutral/beige tones. Green is very calming to me and it's a color that I never tire of because it's easy on the eyes. I too believe that color can effect moods and emotions.

Love your plates, and cups and saucers. Fabuloso!

And I'm curious, what kind of energy work are you involved with? I found that fascinating to read.

  18. " I read somewhere that green is used in hospitals to calm patients and help them feel positive."

Very interesting, Fiona! And I don't doubt it because green has a very calming and positive effect on me, so I can see it being used in hospitals.

OMG...that is so ironic! We must be on the same 'green' wave length today!

And yes, I like blue too. Especially grey/blues.

"One of the first questions I insist a new client answer is what colors they want in their website. Color has a way of attracting the right business (and repelling potential customers, if it's not used judiciously!)"

Thank you so much for sharing that! And I totally agree with you about websites and their use of color because they can either make or break a professional website. In fact, that's the first thing my eyes go to when visiting a website or blog - the COLORS.

"I've always heard that you should pick out plates only after you've imagined a cooked egg on them -- and I think a cooked egg would look SPLENDID on those dark green plates!!"

HA! I've never heard that! I got the plates at Target many years ago. And the cups and saucers I got at Williams-Sonoma when I worked there.

I practice Reiki. I was certified back in 1997. It's a form of energy work that effects the mind, body and spirit. I am also certified in Foot Reflexology, which is also a form of energy work that uses pressure points on the feet. It's amazing!

  24. Ron, you continue to blow me away. To come up with "Green" as a theme and turn it in to something BEAUTIFUL. WOW!!!!!!! The meaning of colors reminded me of actually something kind of gross that I remember from THIRD GRADE. We went on a tour of Mystic Seaport (I think that was the name) and went on an old wooden ship. The decks were painted red to make the blood that would spill less obvious... isn't that crazy! Wow, that was SO FAR OFF from calm green LOL!

My favorite color is "cobalt blue." It brings me so much calm. LOVE that color. So when I find cobalt blue seaglass I am in heaven.

Your pictures... WOW. You took a wonderful post and turned it in to so much more with the pictures. My favorite? I bet you can guess. The last!!! Oh wait Kermit is the last. I love him too... but YOUR pictures.. the last LOL!

  25. Ron, you worked for Williams-Sonoma? The one here in Philly? Wow! I don't think I could work there because I would end up spending my whole paycheck on purchasing things. I love that store!

  26. Yes, can you believe I worked for Williams-Sonoma, the man who DOESN'T like to COOK?!?!

Yes, I worked at the one here in Philly when I first moved back. I got it as a part time job and ended up staying there for about a year and a half. I learned a lot while working there but I still didn't lean to cook - HA!

  27. Aw...thank you for your sweet and kind words, Katherine. You're a sweetheart :)

I got the idea for this post last week while in the park one afternoon; enjoying the sunshine and sitting in the grass. It was a gorgeous day! Suddenly I thought, "Hey...I think I'll write a post about GREEN!" Luckily, I had my camera with me!

" The decks were painted red to make the blood that would spill less obvious... isn't that crazy!"

OMG...I got CHILLS when I read that!

"My favorite color is "cobalt blue." It brings me so much calm. LOVE that color. So when I find cobalt blue seaglass I am in heaven."

Yes, I know of your LOVE of cobalt blue because of the pieces of glass you've collected over the years and posted on your blog. I love that color too! I especially love to drink out of a cobalt blue glass. I think it's so sexy!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a spectacular week!

  30. Color theory and psychology is so powerful, especially in advertising/marketing. Colors can incite a multitude of emotions...much like smells can revive memories in the brain. And I think it's no coincidence that God chose the color green to be so prevalent in nature...for these very reasons!

  31. RON! We are such twinsies. Green has been my all time fave color since I can remember. I even have a pinterest board dedicated to all things green, haha. I agree, blue is over-rated as the ultimate calming color. Have you ever walked into a spa? Hello pale green walls. Kthx. My house is pretty much shades of blues and greens throughout. ... although I've been pulling out pops of coral, tangerine and yellow this spring in my flowers an such. So cheery!

    https://youtu.be/1l-HHuZNnFc

I like a nice dark pine green meself.

Color definitely has an impact on mood. I forget the name of the study (I think it was a study? idk, we learned about it in college), but there was a prison that painted the walls of the cells and everything a specific color (pink, I think), and found that it had a calming effect on the inmates.

  33. OMG Brit...we are TWINSIES! And I have noticed on your blog that you show a lot of "green" within your photographs!

And I'll have to check out your Pinterest page because I also have an account on Pinterest!

Yup, you're right, spas do favor the color GREEN because it's so calming.

  35. Green is my fav color, hands down. And in all shades from lime to emerald, I love them all. I agree, color can have a powerful effect on how we feel, especially when it comes to our clothes, most of all. For example, yellow energizes me, when I wear it, I always feel good and often get complements on how I look that day. Orange is another powerful color that makes feel energized. But when it comes to feeling peaceful and focused, I'd always pick green. Great post Ron. Have a fab weekend, it's almost here.

  36. That is very sweet - it made me tear up, too. I think it truly is easy to lose sight of all the good in this world. And I believe there are more good people than bad. I wish the media did a better job of presenting stories of kindnesses shown to others rather than focusing on all the horror.

  37. Green is the color of nature so it makes all the sense in the world that it both brings you energy and soothes you. I know when the world around me is awash in green foliage, I feel ALIVE and at peace. One thing I love about this part of the country is that it is incredibly lush for so much of the year. I love green. I use it in my decorating, too, to bring it indoors.

  38. Helloooooo there Geraldine!

Go, GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And since posting this, I'm very surprised and delighted to read that so many people like the color green as well :)

"For example, yellow energizes me, when I wear it, I always feel good and often get complements on how I look that day. Orange is another powerful color that makes feel energized. But when it comes to feeling peaceful and focused, I'd always pick green."

Absolutely, color is very powerful in how it makes one feel. I know of many interior designers who use color to create a space. And it's the same with artists who paint; using color to effect the mood of a piece.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and feelings on this topic, my friend. Have a great rest of your week!

Amen! And that's what I love about this part of the country as well. As much as I liked visiting the desert area (Vegas and Reno), I don't think I could live there because of the lack of green.

Benze, I know several people who are/were not too keen on the color green, so I understand. Personally, I didn't always like green. I would said it's been the last 15 years that it's become one of my favorites. So I think the colors we are attracted to changes as we grow.
