Because I did not have HBO at that time, I didn't get to see much of Sex and the City until it went off the air and I purchased the DVD complete series collection on sale. During the first year the show was on, I would sometimes get together with a few friends on a Saturday night and watch it at someones house who had cable. Yet I have to be honest, I didn't initially love the show like most people did because (and can you BELIEVE I'm even saying this?), I found the show offensive and TMI. Me. Can you fathom that? That I (who at one time on this blog posted about shaving my kiwis) would find an HBO show offensive and TMI??

Well, obviously I was suffering from some leftover Catholic-School-Mortal-Sin-Going-To-Hell-Guilt back then, because pretty much NOTHING offends me now.

Needless to say, years later, I fell absolutely head over heels for the show. Even now, 14 years later, I still watch it on DVD.

Sex and the City was so far ahead of its time because no topic was off limits. They didn't even know what the word taboo was. And I don't think the show was bold just to be BOLD, it was meant to push buttons to make people think. And laugh. And sometimes cry. It also celebrated the power of women and female friendships. Men took a back seat in that show; placing women in the driver's seat. And in control.

These four ladies were individually beautiful, sexy, funny, talented, bluntly direct, and intelligent.

Here they are...

The Cast:
Samantha - Kim Cattrall
Charlotte - Kristin Davis
Miranda - Cynthia Nixon

Personally, my favorite character was Miranda because I felt that she was the most human. She had many levels to her personality, and went through a lot of changes throughout the six-year run. I also think Miranda was the most well-written and full-bodied character. I adore Cynthia Nixon as an actress because she's so natural and real in every role she portrays.

Anyhow, last week while walking to the High Line, I accidentally passed the exterior apartment location of Carrie Bradshaw, which is on Perry Street in Greenwich Village. All the interior shots of the show were filmed in a studio, yet the exterior shots were filmed throughout New York City.

Carrie's apartment...

And here it is today...

Because so many SATC fans still stop by this location, the owner had to put up a chain and sign that prevents people from actually walking up to the apartment door and taking pictures in front of it.

The sign also asks that people talk quietly and not leave any debris on the steps.

I can't imagine what the tenants of this building have to go through living there, with people hanging out day and night. When I was there that day, there were about eight other people taking pictures as well.

*a side note: Sarah Jessica Parker lives only a few blocks from here. I read somewhere that when the show was still on the air, she would simply walk to this exterior location if they were shooting a scene in front of the apartment.

And I have to admit, it felt very exciting to be standing there; looking at a famous location from one of my favorite HBO series.

I fantasized that Carrie came out of her apartment.
Stopped at the foot of the stairs.
Turned to me, and cheerfully said...

"Absolutely, Carrie. And it'll be my treat!"

Have a super week, y'all!
X

*Hey, in case you're interested, I'm leaving you a link to a post I shared back in 2010 about coming in contact with Sarah Jessica Parker's dress.

  1. Hey there Lisa!

The only reason it even dawned on me that it was "the" apartment from the show was that I saw that I was walking down Perry Street, which I knew (from watching several documentaries on the show) that it was the street on which the exterior apartment was filmed. Also, from watching the show, I immediately knew it was the apartment because I recognized it.

"I love the architecture of the door frame. But, I love all things doors!! :-)"

Yes, isn't the architecture of the door frame stunning? That's one of the reasons why I love New York City, the old and beautiful architecture and how it's still standing.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a grrrrrrrrrreat week!

  2. I hate to admit it, but I have never seen a single episode of Sex & The City. To be fair though, I have also never watched The Sopranos. Tsk, tsk. One of these days. I would not turn down a glass of wine with Carrie Bradshaw, though!

It's pretty cool seeing a building you know from TV/the movies in real life. We are going up to Tacoma our last weekend here, and I'll be stopping by Stadium High School. If you've ever seen 10 Things I Hate About You, you'll recognize the building. I can't wait to see it in person.

Enjoy the rest of your week, Ron!

  3. Hellooooooo Valerie!

Hope your lunch with your friend was faaaaaaabulous!

Yes, Sex and the City would have been televised in the UK because I used to work with a lovely lady from Kent, who said that she LOVED watching the show. She also loved New York City (like I do) which is why she enjoyed the show so much. The show was about New York City.

"A big WOW for your find, though. How great is that? Wouldn't that be something to brag about to your friends?"

HA! Yes, and I've been bragging about ever since. I've been showing my pictures, not only to my friends, but also the people I work with.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear friend. Have a lovely week!

  4. I never watched that show, Ron, but I don't watch much TV anyway. What a great location -- such a non-imposing site that people like me wouldn't give a second thought to! How cool that you found it on your haunts, but I'm sorry that chain prevented your getting a selfie by the door! xo

  5. Hey there Mark!

"One of these days. I would not turn down a glass of wine with Carrie Bradshaw, though!"

    HA! Isn't she adorable?

And yes, I know MANY people who has never seen a single episode of SATC. As I shared, I was not at all interested in it when it first came on. It wasn't until AFTER it was over that I got hook on it and purchased the DVD complete series collection. In fact, I still watch it. Not only the four ladies, but the who cast (and guest appearances) were so good!

"We are going up to Tacoma our last weekend here, and I'll be stopping by Stadium High School. If you've ever seen 10 Things I Hate About You, you'll recognize the building. I can't wait to see it in person."

I've never seen the film. but I googled it before I left my comment to you, so that I could see the building and it was BEAUTIFUL! What a stunning building.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a terrific rest of your week!

    X to you and Tara

  6. I'll have to admit, I'm with Bijoux in that I would have walked past the door, not realizing it's famous significance! I've seen episodes, but was not an avid watcher of the show. I do agree it pushed all the boundaries and addressed uncomfortable topics. I'm sure this find was quite a thrill for you! Just one more anticipated perk of your upcoming move!! I love the architecture of the door frame. But, I love all things doors!! :-)

  7. Hey there Debbie!

The show was on waaaaay back in the late 90's. And like I shared, I wasn't very impressed with it until after it was over and got the DVD collection set. Honestly, I don't watch much TV either.

But I had to say, I was sooooooo excited to spot the apartment because I knew it INSTANTLY, as soon as I saw it.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have an awesome week!

  8. "I had to laugh at you saying you didn't like the show because it was TMI! 😂😂😂 "

HA! I know, can you freaking believe that? Me? TMI?!?!

I know quite a few people who have never seen a single episode of SATC, so I understand. Honestly, when it first aired, I didn't think I would ever get as hook as I did when I watched the DVD's, seeing all six seasons, from start to finish. But I ended up falling in love with the show.

"Did you know what street it was on or did you just recognize the door and realize when you saw the chain?"

Yes, I knew the street it was on because I knew the backstory of the show, but had never gone to see the apartment. It wasn't until I was walking to the High Line and using Google Maps on my phone did I suddenly realize that I was actually ON Perry Street. And when I turned my head to the left, I suddenly saw the apartment and recognized it from the show. And then when I saw all the other people around, taking pictures, I KNEW it was the apartment.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic week!

  9. I had to laugh at you saying you didn't like the show because it was TMI! 😂😂😂
Well, would you believe I've never seen one episode?? That would be so fun to find a location like that from a show you've loved. I can be so oblivious sometimes that I'm afraid I'd walk right by something like that and have no clue! Did you know what street it was on or did you just recognize the door and realize when you saw the chain?

    Super fun post, Ron!

  10. Hi Ron. I'm late today... been out lunching with a friend. As for the film - I haven't seen it so cannot comment. I don't even know if it has been on our telly. A big WOW for your find, though. How great is that? Wouldn't that be something to brag about to your friends?

  11. Hola Denise!

"My girlfriends and I would have SATC wine parties on Saturday nights. We would each take different turns hosting the parties."

Oh, how awesome! Back then, SATC was such a big deal because there had never been anything like it. It was consider so risque and shocking. Yet now when you watch it, the show seems so tame and relatively normal.

"...my girlfriends and I took the Sex and the City bus tour. What fun that was!"

Yes, I had heard about the bus tours but never did them. I think they still offer them.

"It's been in past years that I guess they had to do that from preventing people walking up the stairs and taking pictures, and can understand."

Yea, I think it has been in the past years because I know a few people who had gone there and there was no chain or note on the stairs.

I found that photo of Carrie online and just added the speech bubble.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a great rest of your week!

  13. Ron, I LOVE this post!!!! I was, and still am, I gigantic fan of SATC. I was addicted to watching it on HBO for the six years it was on. My girlfriends and I would have SATC wine parties on Saturday nights. We would each take different turns hosting the parties.

Being a New Yorker, I have seen Carrie's apartment on Perry St. In fact, my girlfriends and I took the Sex and the City bus tour. What fun that was!

"It also celebrated the power of women and female friendships. Men took a back seat in that show; placing women in the driver's seat. And in control." You are so right about that.

Wonderful pictures! At the time I saw the apartment, the chain and signs had not been placed there. It's been in past years that I guess they had to do that from preventing people walking up the stairs and taking pictures, and can understand.

LOVE the photo of Carrie asking you out for a glass of red wine LOL!

    Great post, Ron X

  14. Hi Fiona!

The series was on from 1998 until 2004. They also made two movies after the series was completed. I really enjoyed the first movie, however, the second one was so bad. There was talk about a possible third movie, but they decided against it.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

  15. Ron, I'm with you, Miranda was my favorite out of the four girls. You're right, she was the most human and the best written character on the series. I love how unafraid and unapologetic she was. She said what everyone else was thinking. I also loved her husband Steve. They made such a great pair because they balanced one another.

I love the photographs you shared of Carrie's apartment. I wish I had been there with you because I we could have been excited together. Perhaps after you move there, I can take a trip into the city and we can meet up and go back to Perry Street.

Fun post, Ron! You always write with such a passion in your voice. I'm looking forward to reading your posts once you move back to New York and share your stories!

    Have a great week X

  16. Hellooooo there Elaine!

" I love how unafraid and unapologetic she was. She said what everyone else was thinking."

Yes....you said that perfectly! I love how unapologetic Miranda was. She, to me, was the one character out of the four who had the most diversity and growth. I also thought she was very funny. Yes, she and Steve made a good pair because they were complete opposites.

" Perhaps after you move there, I can take a trip into the city and we can meet up and go back to Perry Street."

That would be AWESOME! Yes, after I move there, let's plan to meet up for the day, that would be so much fun!

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor. Enjoy your weekend!

  17. I cannot believe you wrote about shaving your balls. And of course, I had to go read it.

So another cool High Line find. I actually never saw a full episode of Sex and the City. It didn't strike me as TMI so much as not a show that resonated for me. But with your New York-love, I can imagine you'd want to see all of them.

By the way, I think you should let her pick up the drink tab - I suspect she can afford it. :-)

  18. "By the way, I think you should let her pick up the drink tab - I suspect she can afford it. :-)"

OMG, I laughed out loud at that. Hilarious! And you're right!

"I cannot believe you wrote about shaving your balls. And of course, I had to go read it."

HA! I know, can you believe that?!?! I write that post so many years ago, when I was in my TMI-anything-goes faze of blogging. Back then, I shared about EVERYTHING.

" It didn't strike me as TMI so much as not a show that resonated for me."

It was the same for me when it first came on, it just didn't resonate for me. However, years later (after I saw the first SATC movie)...the show just "clicked" and I fell in love with it. That was when I purchased the DVD collection and watched all six years at once.

Have a fab weekend, my friend!

  19. Oh Ron, I would love to do that. My husband would too! Once you get settled, lets make a plan to meet there. Perhaps we can do it at a time when my hubby and I go back to visit the family for a long weekend.

Hope you had a great weekend, Ron

  20. Ron, my girlfriend is a huge fan of Sex and the City, so I had to share this post with her. She wanted me to tell you that she was so jealous that you were at Carrie's apartment. Just like you, she has the DVD collection. I bought it for her at Christmas many years ago as a surprise. I was never a fan of the show myself, but after watching the series with her, I really grew to like it. Some of the shows were hilarious!

Looking forward to seeing more photos from your trip. You take such rockin' pics, dude!

  22. Hiya Matt!

OMG, I bet your girlfriend was ecstatic when she opened that Christmas present! And how thoughtful of you! I purchased my collection when F.Y.E. went out of business, so I got it at such a low price. I was very lucky because there was only one set left on the shelve.

I agree, I laugh my ass off during so many of the episodes, especially the season 4, 5, and 6.

I will be posting more photographs for NYC soon!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a great week!

  25. Ron: TMI!?!? You?!? C'mon, TMI is your version of warming up in the bullpen!

But as a fellow sufferer, I know all to well the heartbreak of Catholic-School-Mortal-Sin-Going-To-Hell-Guilt and I'm so glad you gave it the heave-ho and became the happy little degenerate we all know and love!

It's so cool that you spotted the apartment from the High Line, which is one of my favorite NY locations. And if you ever do run into Carrie Bradshaw, the least she could do is invite you out for some wine!

    Take care, buddy! :)

Rob, that made me laugh out loud. You are so funny!

" I'm so glad you gave it the heave-ho and became the happy little degenerate we all know and love!"

    HA! Me too. ME too!

Isn't the High Line FAAAABULOUS? And to think that back when I lived in NYC (70's-80's) it was wasting away and had plans of being demolished?!? Thank god the city changed their mind. It's such a lovely location!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a terrific week!

  27. I don't watch TV and never saw the show, I don't mean this the wrong way but I think it would be a bit too "girly" for me, not that I'm into macho stuff either.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't watch TV much anymore myself. In fact, TV has lost my interest over the years. But I will say, Sex and the City was a hoot!

Yes, much more women watched it than men. It was definitely more of a "girls" TV show.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Joe!
