Post updates by email:

Just wanted to give you a heads-up that this post is heavy with photographs because I just recently traveled to New York City with the sole intention of visiting Hudson Yards and the Vessel, which officially opened March 15, 2019, and had such an AMAZING time that I literally could not stop myself from taking a BILLION pictures because I was utterly gobsmacked.

I had been reading about Hudson Yards for several weeks and had seen quite a few photographs and video clips, but seeing it in person was even more impressive and exciting. I felt like I was in The Wizard of Oz walking through the Emerald City.

Oh my god...the place is PHENOMENAL!

These first two photographs I found online to show you the area along the Hudson River on the West Side of Manhattan, referred to as, Hudson Yards...

The following photograph is what Hudson Yards will eventually look like in its total completion...

"Hudson Yards is New York’s newest neighborhood and home to more than 100 diverse shops and culinary experiences, offices for leaders in industry, significant public art and dynamic cultural institutions including The Shed, modern residences, 14 acres of public plazas, gardens and groves and the world’s first Equinox Hotel."

These next two collages are composed of photographs I took myself of some of the retail stores inside the shopping area at Hudson Yards...

I didn't know whether I'd be able to climb the Vessel because I had seen online that it was so crowded they suggested you make a reservation ahead of time. However, I couldn't believe my luck because when I got there that day (around 12:30 PM), it didn't appear to be that busy. Perhaps because it was a weekday rather than a weekend. Anyway, I ended up getting a ticket for admission (which was free) and was able to spend 30 minutes climbing the stairs and taking photographs. I had SUCH a blast!

Here is a brief description of the Vessel:

"The extraordinary centerpiece of Hudson Yards is its spiral staircase, a soaring new landmark meant to be climbed. This interactive design piece was imagined by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio as a focal point where people can enjoy new perspectives of the city and one another from different heights, angles and vantage points.

Comprised of 154 intricately interconnecting flights of stairs -- almost 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings -- with nearly one mile of vertical climb above the Public Square and Gardens, this landmark offers remarkable views."

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you New York's newest magnificent and exquisite piece of architecture, the Vessel...

I conclude this post with photographs I took while at Hudson Yards of two adorable and very chic little Pomeranian's who LOVED having their picture taken. In fact, they actually posed like two professional supermodels...

Notice the little platform shoes they're wearing.

The Pom on the right thought she was Cindy Crawford on a photo shoot for Vogue magazine. Notice how she subtly turned her head to the right so that the wind blew her hair away from her face.

ONLY in New York City.

Have a faaaaaaaabulous week everyone!
X

  1. OMG, Ron, I learned about the Vessel while watching the evening news on the day it opened. And I thought, 'Oh, Ron is going to love that!' To me, it looks terrifying!!!!! I can't handle heights that are open air like that. Plus, my mind goes to bad places, worrying about what other people are going to do. But, I'm glad you were able to enjoy it!!!!
Those dogs are NUTS! They look like rappers from the 80's! Thanks for the beautiful photos to start the week, Ron!

  2. Those Poms are adorable!! Yes, they definitely look like they were posing for those pictures.

'Only in New York City.' You're so right, Ron. I can't imagine anything like the Vessel anywhere but NYC. I like the closeup photos that show the landings interconnecting the stairs. Guess they never planned for it to be handicapped accessible or old-person-accessible! It looks pretty scary to me, and I imagine you'd have to be pretty fit to climb 2,500 steps and a mile up -- what a fantastic workout!

Love those classy stores, too. I don't imagine I'd buy anything there, but oh what FUN window shopping! Thanks for letting me enjoy your day trip. xo

  3. Ron, the photos of the Vessel look surreal, they're amazing! OMG, how did you ever climb those stairs to the top? I'm deathly afraid of heights, especially in an open air space like that. I got dizzy just looking at these pictures LOL! Those Poms are hilarious! Great shots! Was the owner standing by or were they just standing there by themselves?

    Again, amazing photos!

Wow wow wow! Those staircases are amazing - they look like beehives. And those Pomeranians - too adorable and funny!

  5. The visual stimulation of Hudson Yards is amazing. The the Vessel?!?!? Wow! I'm not sure I would be able to climb all those steps without taking a break. Perhaps they should put a little coffee shop and deli about half way up. Whatta ya think? :-) The Poms.....no words. I'd like to have seen their owner's attire! Hope you have a fantabulous week.

  6. " And I thought, 'Oh, Ron is going to love that!' "

Yes, you know me well, my friend, because the second I watched the opening ceremonies on March 15th, I KNEW I had to go to NYC as soon as I could, to see it in person. Luckily, I had two days off in a row last week, so I booked my bus reservation and went. It was faaaaaaabulous!

Normally I can't handle heights that are in open air as well. However, for some reason, it didn't bother me. Yet, I DID have concern that it would. But I was determined to walk those stairs to the tippy-top, which really isn't that high. It's only 15 stories high.

"Those dogs are NUTS! They look like rappers from the 80's!"

Bwhahahhahahaha! OMG, that cracked me up. Yes, they DO look like rapper from the 80's!!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a terrific week!

  7. Debbie, aren't the Poms ADORABLE?!?!? And I wasn't the only one taking photographs of them, there were at least 20 people standing around them, taking pics with either their phones or cameras. Those dogs were such a HOOT!

"Guess they never planned for it to be handicapped accessible or old-person-accessible! "

Yes they did. They have an elevator built into one side of the Vessel for anyone who wishes to use it.

"It looks pretty scary to me, and I imagine you'd have to be pretty fit to climb 2,500 steps and a mile up -- what a fantastic workout!"

What's really amazing is that they constructed the staircases in a very gentle incline so that it doesn't really feel as though you're walking steep steps. I took my time climbing to the top because I wanted to take pictures at various heights.

Aren't the stores classy-looking? They had some that were very expensive, and some that were average. They also had some really wonderful and different restaurants and eateries.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have an awesome week!

  8. Thank you, Candice :) I had soooooooooooo much fun taking these photographs! I went crazy with my camera and phone because I wanted to get as many pictures as I could from different angles.

"I'm deathly afraid of heights, especially in an open air space like that. I got dizzy just looking at these pictures LOL!"

Normally I too am afraid of heights, however, I have say that once I started walking up the stairs, I had no fear. Yet, I did have reservations about how I would feel the day before.

Aren't the Poms freaking hilarious??? Yes, the owner was standing beside them--to their right--as people stood in front of the dogs and snapped photographs. She even has and Instagram page for them, HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic week!

  9. Aren't the staircases AMAZING, Fiona? And yes, you're right, they do look like beehives because that's what the Vessel was constructed to look like--a BIG beehive, where people could come together and walk it.

"And those Pomeranians - too adorable and funny!"

OMG, when I first spotted them, I couldn't stop laughing!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a terrific week!

  10. "The visual stimulation of Hudson Yards is amazing."

Isn't it AMAZING, Lisa?!?!? It honestly feels as though you're in another world--kind of like The Wizard of Oz. And the view from the top is truly spectacular!

"I'm not sure I would be able to climb all those steps without taking a break. Perhaps they should put a little coffee shop and deli about half way up. Whatta ya think? :-) "

HA! That's an excellent idea! I did take breaks periodically because I wanted to take pictures at different levels of the Vessel. However, I will say that didn't feel as though I was walking ups steep stairs because I never got winded or tired. They designed the staircases with a very gradual and gentle incline. They also have an elevator built into the side, just in case someone wishes to use it instead of walking.

Aren't he Poms hilarious? The owner, believe it or not, was dressed very simple and basic. She also wore sunglasses though LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a grrrrreat week!

  11. Fabulous, absolutely, and certainly most unusual. Great designing job. If I was there I would be lost in no time. I wonder how long it would take to see it all.
I wasn't struck on seeing dogs dressed up, complete with specs and shoes. At first I thought they were dolls so it was a shock to read that they real live dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yes, isn't the Vessel fabulously unusual, Valerie? It was designed by, Thomas Heatherwick , who is from the UK. He currently lives in London.

Hudson Yards is only partially complete. In fact, construction is still going on. They are also building condo and apartment. The condo's start at 30 MILLION DOLLARS!!

"I wasn't struck on seeing dogs dressed up, complete with specs and shoes. At first I thought they were dolls so it was a shock to read that they real live dogs."

HA! Yes, they do look like dolls. The one lying down on the left looked like it was falling asleep LOL! Apparently, those dogs are very popular in NY. Almost a celebrity!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great week!

  13. Wow Ron, these photographs are amazing! Hudson Yards and the Vessel look like some futuristic new world. I love the photo looking up at the skyscrapers against the blue sky. How did you get that shot? And the Poms? ROFLMAO! I love their attitude because you can see it in the pictures. They know they ROCK!

    Great post, dude!

  14. I had never heard of Hudson Yards or The Vessel, so I appreciate the educational post! Both look fantastic...especially The Vessel. I could probably spend all day climbing up and down those stairs and exploring the many different angles and views of the city. I'm glad you had such a nice day, too - that sky is seriously blue!!

"Only in New York City" is right. Truer words have never been written!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks, Matt :) Yes, you're right, it does look futuristic!

I got that shot by placing my camera on the ground inside the Vessel (in the exact center) and then clicking the shutter. I actually used the camera in my smartphone to get that shot.

HA! Aren't the Pom's hilarious? They even have their own Instagram feed!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a most excellent rest of your week!

  16. Mark, I started hearing (and seeing) about the Vessel on the day it officially opened. I instantly knew that the next time I went to NYC, which was about 10 days later that I wanted to visit and take pictures.

"I could probably spend all day climbing up and down those stairs and exploring the many different angles and views of the city."

I could have too. When they give you your ticket, it has a time stamp on it to lett you know that you have 30 minutes to explore. My time was 1:00 PM until 1:30 PM. You should have seen me taking pictures like a manic to get different angle. I'm sure the next time I go back, I'll find even more angles.

The weather was FLAWLESS that day. It was around 47 degrees and windy, however, the sun was out without a cloud in the sky. PERFECT.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic week!

  17. Ron, these photographs are stunning! Oh my gawd they look so professional!!! It's funny that you posted about Hudson Yards because my cousin who lived in Queens was telling me that she's dying to go there, but wanted to wait until the crowds slow down because she figured it would me mobbed. I'm going to tell her about how you went there and it was not that busy. I think you're right, it's most likely because you visited on a weekday. Just from the pictures you shared of some of the retailers in the mall, I can tell it's amazing. Do the also have restaurants or places to eat?

Gorgeous pictures, Ron. Your photograph skills keep getting more and more fabulous. You have a such a great eye for capturing the perfect image! XO

  18. Hola Denise!

Aw, thank you :) I had so much fun taking these pictures because I was so freaking excited to be there. I watched to opening day ceremonies which instantly made me go the second I had the chance, however, I thought it would be insanely crowded. Tell you're cousin to try and go on a weekday (early or midday) because when I went back later that night, it was packed with people. I bet weekends are busy as well.

Yes, they have quite a few really nice (and different) restaurants and eateries. The mall area has three floors, do there are tons of things to seen.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a great weekend!

  19. Incredible photos, Ron! I really love the one looking up through the Vessel. I visited the website link you left and really enjoyed it. Both Hudson Yards and the Vessel are quite impressive. New York City really knows how to do things GRAND, don't they?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks, Daniel :) Isn't the website FABULOUS? I really enjoyed the various videos and reading more about the creation of the vessel.

"New York City really knows how to do things GRAND, don't they?"

You said it, they most certainly do! Everything is NYC is GRAND, and that's why I love it...it's bigger than life!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a super weekend!

  21. Wow, Ron, these photos are incredible! I haven't been to Hudson Yards yet--even though I live in New York!--but it just went on my to-do list thanks to you! Once again you've used your incredible eye to capture heart and soul of the Big Apple. You're a real New York cheerleader--and you've got the pom-poms to prove it!

Take care, buddy, and let's get together some time real soon!!

  22. Thank you, Rob :)

I had seen the opening ceremonies on March 15th and immediately knew that I needed to visit both Hudson Yards and the Vessel because they looked incredible. And guess what? They WERE. And I was so happy to see that on the day I went, the place was really not that busy because on the website it said to be sure to make a reservation.

When you have the chance, please visit because I think you'll be amazed by how they transformed that whole area along the Hudson. It's very impressive!

"You're a real New York cheerleader--and you've got the pom-poms to prove it!"

HA! I've always felt that was a New Yorker in my heart because of how much I love that city. It will always feel like "home" to me.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a faaaaaaaabulous weekend! And yes, I find that I'm making more frequent trips into New York over the past three months, so I know I'll be there again soon. We'll get together for sure.

  23. AMAZING photographs, Ron! I shared this post with my husband and he said the same thing--AMAZING! See, it's photos like these that make me miss my native city. I saw the celebration of opening day on the news last month and told my hubby that the next time we're in New York visiting our family, we must stop by. I'm surprised it wasn't more crowded when you went because it had just opened. Love the collages of the retail stores. And those Poms? They're priceless! You're right, ONLY in New York City!

Thanks for sharing your love of my hometown city, Ron. You should have been born there because of how much you love it. To me, you ARE a native!

    Have a great week xo

    ReplyDelete
  24. Aw thank you, Elaine :) I was so excited to take these pictures that day. I had anticipated it being SO CROWDED, but was happy to see that I timed it just right because I barely waited any time to climb the Vessel. Yes, the next time you're in NYC, you must go. Try to go on a weekday because I think weekends (especially with spring and summer coming up) weekends will be tough.

The really enjoyed the shopping plaza too because they have a lot of unique retailers, not the usual "mall stores." Aren't the POM'S hilarious?

"You should have been born there because of how much you love it. To me, you ARE a native!"

Thank you. And I FEEL like a native too!

Have a super week, my friend. And thanks so much for stopping by!
