Post updates by email:

I was so grateful that over the weekend we got a much deserved break from the horrendous heat and humidity we've had throughout this summer.

Up until now, I haven't once used this blog to complain about how heinous this summer has been, so please allow me to use part of this post to share some whine and cheese.

"One man's pleasure is another man's pain."

I realize that most of you LOVE summer and LOVE frolicking outside in the glorious heat, the glorious humidity, and the glorious never-ending sunshine. Contrary to me, who hibernates indoors most of the summer because summer feels as if I'm trapped in a really bad 1970's slasher HORROR film. Just like the cold of winter feels painful to your body, the heat and humidity of summer does the same thing to my body. It feels like a torture chamber. And yet, I deal with it for three months and try not to bitch and moan because I know that 99.9% of the world LOVES...LOVES...LOVES summer.

However just know, you summer-loving people, that once late-fall and winter kicks in our roles will be reversed. You'll be inside hibernating, while I'll be outside on those frigid 10 degree days; frolicking in my winter attire. I'll be making snow angels by day, and taking long after-dinner walks by night.

I'll be spinning for joy because when it gets really cold, my body feels euphoric!

Like the Snow Miser...

Okay, that was the bitch and moan part of this post. Thank you for hearing me out.

Now, on to the second part of this post.

Flowers!

Last Saturday, I took my camera over to the art museum area and snapped pictures of the gorgeous flowers that are still in bloom. And oh my god the day was perfect because it was cool and partially cloudy. It was the first day this month that I didn't sweat like a human pig.

All of these photographs were taken using a manual focus. Ever since weaning myself off auto focus, I barely use it anymore. I find that manually using my camera is much more challenging and rewarding.

Please enjoy one of the few things I do enjoy about summer.

Flower Power...

-------------------------------------------

I am concluding this post with a pop quiz, much like the Catholic school nuns used to do to their students in order to put the fear of God in them.

Awww...isn't she a sweet little beastly thing?

These devilish angelic-looking nuns would get such joy in throwing a POP quiz on us as a means of repentance for all our dastardly mortal sins. And if we didn't score at least a 90 on the quiz, we were destined to go straight to hell without any dinner and tapioca pudding.

------------------------------------------

QUIZ

Each of you must tell me in your comment which one are you. Are you the Snow Miser or are you the Heat Miser?

And you cannot answer by saying that you're a little bit of both, you have to choose one or the other.

(or you'll go straight to hell)

Have a faaaaaabulous week, y'all!

I'm probably more like the snow miser - but really I love love autumn! Harsh winter can be a bit trying with putting all the clothes on and trying to get to work on time... but autumn is my absolute favourite time of year. I like summer, but not when it's miserably hot.

  2. I'll go with the snow miser, he appeals more than his pal.
Our summer has been crazy, if I say we had three days of summer you would probably think I was joking. Not on your life. This year has been the most frustrating one I've ever known. As I type I await a thunder storm and that brings me hope that when it's done we might get some summer. Enjoy whatever comes to you and stay cheerful.

  3. I'm the Heat Miser. I swear, I never sweat! I'm always cold! Beautiful photos of the flowers. Isn't it fun to capture a shot with a butterfly? Enjoy the cool down. I wore yoga pants yesterday! Boo!

  4. "Awww...isn't she a sweet little beastly thing?" Oh my god Ron, I laughed so hard when I read that. And when I showed it to my husband, he did too. Both of us went to Catholic school so we know what you mean about the nuns and those pop quiz's. Can you believe the nun's clothing has changed since we went to school? They wear normal clothes now, so that you can't even tell if they're a nun.

I am definitely like you, the Snow Miser because I hate being hot. Yes, this summer has been horrendous with the heat and humidity. My husband and I are so looking forward to fall and winter.

Beautiful photographs! That last one of with the butterfly is incredible!

Enjoy this cooler weather while we have it, Ron x

  5. I am the heat miser because I don't like being cold at all. I don't mind the first part of autumn when it's on the cool side, but when it starts getting cold (like in the 40's and below), I shiver.

You pictures are really beautiful. The colors are incredible! Well done, Ron. And fun post!

  6. Me too, Fiona, I love autumn as well. In fact, it's my favorite season. I was born in October, so I feel a connection to autumn.

I think many people don't mind summer or winter if they're not extreme. However, I love extreme cold, so I enjoy even the dead of winter. I just don't like being hot, so summer is my least favorite season. And when I say hot, I mean anything above 75 degrees. HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great rest of your week!

  7. Yaaaaaaaaaay another snow miser! Valerie, I had a feeling you were.

Hasn't this summer been crazy?!?! And I hear that from people all over the world. Here, it's been horrendously hot. And I had a feel last winter that we were going to have an extremely hot and humid summer. And I was right. We too have had a lot of rain, which has made it even more humid.

I am sooooooooooo looking forward to AUTUMN :)

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a grrrrreat rest of your week!

    HA! Yes!!!!!....I KNEW you were!!!!

And OMG, I am so jealous of you because I sweat SO BAD. And it doesn't even have to be that hot for me to sweat. I sweat standing still. HA!

Thank you. I really enjoyed being outside on Saturday, taking these photos. I got very lucky with butterfly shot because I kept waiting for it to open its wings. And when it did....I snapped the picture and got it. There were so many bees and butterflies around the flowers that day. They were so cute!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  9. Elaine, where the Catholic school nuns a nightmare?!?! I had many one or two in the 8 years that I attended Catholic school whole were nice, but the rest were hideous. HA!

"Can you believe how much the nun's clothing has changed since we went to school? They wear normal clothes now, so that you can't even tell if they're a nun."

OMG...YES! Can you believe how much their clothing has changed?!? They stopped wearing a habit many years ago, and switched to regular clothes but still wore a tiny head veil. But then eventually did away with them. I remember seeing a nun for the first time in lay-clothes and not even realizing it was a nun.

Yup, I knew you were the Snow Miser because I know you're like me, you hate the heat. Thank god this summer will over soon because I can't wait for those crispy, cool days when I can put a light jacket on. But I also can't wait for the cold and snow of winter!

Thank you. I had a wonderful day last Saturday taking those pictures.

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor. Have a great rest of your week!

Yup, Candice, you are definitely the Heat Miser. I think overall, most people don't like being cold and would rather be hot. There was a time when the heat didn't bother me at all, however, once I turned 45, I couldn't stand the heat. I feel like I went through MAN-O-PAUSE. HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great rest of your week!

  11. Ron, you know my favorite season is FALL, but since I have to choose, I'm going with the Snow Miser. I abhor being sticky! I don't sweat (glow!!) much, but I have really sensitive skin, prone to heat rashes, and I can't stand being in a room without moving air. I think I'm a bit claustrophobic, too, and 9 times out of 10, I'm sitting under a fan of some sort.

Oh, do I remember the nuns ... particularly their clothing. We had Dominicans, who were like black-and-white penguins, but when we went down south for vacations, they had Sisters of Charity (who had immense white caps that looked like sea gulls!!) Catholic school might have had its faults, but I for one will be forever grateful they taught me to read, write, and love learning!

Enjoy your long weekend, my friend -- your new boss is giving you time off, right?!?! xx

  12. Heat Miser! And you probably remember in a recent post that my hair has gotten so crazy that my husband has been calling me Mrs. Heat Miser.

Our AC bit the dust and it took a week for the company to get the new replacement motor. We opened windows and turned on fans, but I was absolutely fine. My husband, on the other hand, lay around complaining about how the heat was exhausting him. For me, as long as I have shade and a breeze, I don't care how hot it gets. But yes, I will sink into despair when the days start getting gray and cold. Especially now that it's physically painful for me after my reconstruction. I love spring, summer and fall, but dread the winter. Dread. It. Have I mentioned that I dread it?

  13. I'm pretty sure you know I'm the Snow Miser, Ron. But I'll go ahead and say it anyway.

We were fortunate to have really nice weather for my parents' visit. In fact, this morning it was a downright chilly 41 degrees! Which means that FALL IS ON THE WAY!!

Great pics, btw. Tara is getting really good at using manual focus on her camera, but I still struggle. Your photos are inspiring though!

    ReplyDelete
  14. HA! Yup Mark, I KNEW what you were going to say because I know that you and I are in that 1% when it comes to loving the cold!!!

"In fact, this morning it was a downright chilly 41 degrees! Which means that FALL IS ON THE WAY!!"

OMG...I am soooooooooo jealous! I can't wait until we get start getting days in the chilly 41 degrees!!!

Aw, thank you. Over the past couple years I've been trying to only use "manual mode" when using my camera. At first, I felt like it took so much more time to adjust the camera to take one picture. However, the more I do it, that faster I'm getting.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Enjoy that cooler weather!

    X to you and Tara

  15. "Heat Miser! And you probably remember in a recent post that my hair has gotten so crazy that my husband has been calling me Mrs. Heat Miser."

HA! Yes, I DO remember that post! And I KNEW you'd say Heat Miser because I know how much you love the heat.

I'd would have been like your husband, complaining how the heat would be exhausting me because I feel the same way. Thank god my AC unit didn't fail me this summer because this has been the hottest summer we've had in a long time. I can semi-deal with the heat during the day, however at nigh, I MUST have AC in order to sleep.

"I love spring, summer and fall, but dread the winter. Dread. It. Have I mentioned that I dread it?"

Yes, I know MANY people who feel the same.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my Libra friend. Have a great rest of your week!

OMG Debbie, you sound EXACTLY like me!!!! I have a ceiling fan in my studio apartment that is on constantly (summer, winter, spring and fall). I NEED to have moving air as well; especially when I'm sleeping.

"We had Dominicans, who were like black-and-white penguins,"

HAHAHAHAHA! That is hilarious because I used to say the same thing, they looked like penguins!

"Catholic school might have had its faults, but I for one will be forever grateful they taught me to read, write, and love learning!"

That's AWESOME! My complaint about Catholic school was all the fear of God they instilled in us in an attempt to education us. It was only after I finally got out of Catholic school did I discover a deep personal connection to God and my own way of learning. Which in a way was good thing because Catholic taught me how to find my own way.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fabulous rest of your week and weekend! Gosh, I can't believe it's already Labor Day!

  17. Heat Miser, Ron. As much as I miss so many things about living in the northeast, I don't miss winter. I don't like to be overly hot either, but I would rather be hot than cold.

Oh my god, the animated photo of the Snow Miser is so CUTE! And I love the last one of the Snow and Heat Miser together. And love the nun picture too. You are hysterical! And I bet you're all excited that fall is coming soon.

Gorgeous photographs! And that's one of things I miss about the northeast, the flowers, trees, grass, mountains.

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron x

  18. Hola Denise!

Yes, I think most people prefer being hot over cold. And actually there was a time LONG, LONG ago when I did too. I used to love sitting on the Florida beaches for HOURS baking in the hot sun and loved it! But in my mid-40's all that changed. I suddenly couldn't stand the heat because it felt like torture.

HA! Isn't that animated GIF so cute? I found it online. I love how he's twirling around so fast! And that picture of the nun looks very similar to a nun I had when I was in Catholic grammar school, I kid you not.

Thanks. It wasn't until I moved back east did I realize how beautiful the landscape and vegetation is. I love it!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Have a great weekend and Labor Day!

  19. Hey Ron, I had to laugh at your part of the post that referred to the Catholic school nuns because a close friend of mine went to Catholic school for 12 years and has the same sentiments. LOL!

Great photos! They are so clear and vibrant. And love how you captured the bees.

I'm a snow miser, I don't do well in heat at all. I get very crabby and irritable. So looking forward to fall and winter!

  20. Hi Daniel!

Yes...there are MANY of us ex-Catholic schooler's who have the same stories to tell! I actually think there is a book (Growing Up Catholic) which I think was published in the 80's. HYSTERICAL book!

Thank you. The weather that day was perfect, so I was able to stay outside most of the afternoon and take some photographs. Aren't the bees cute?

"I don't do well in heat at all. I get very crabby and irritable."

OMG, me too! Me too! I get so irritable when I'm hot.

Have a great holiday week, my friend. And thanks so much for stopping by!

  21. Ron, I don't know how I missed this post but, better late than never.....
First of all, your flower photos are spectacular. I love them and am admittedly envious. My ancient digital camera was probably made when Edison was still working in his Menlo Park studio.

Well, I don't have to tell you that I'm a snow miser. I lived most of my life in hot climates (Southern Calif. and West Texas) and HATED the heat. And there's nothing more depressing than living in a place with no change of seasons.
In San Angelo, TX it was 100 degrees on Halloween and 95 on Valentines Day.

Despite all the inconveniences here in the Tennessee wilderness, I truly savor seeing autumn and winter.
I'll be DELIGHTED when summer is over!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay, you KNOW I adore Autumn, but if you're going to hold a Catholic ruler to my knuckles, I must pick Heat Miser....with a caveat. Once the heat index soars past 100, I'm inside in the AC unless I'm by water. I love watching it snow while inside sipping hot cocoa with Bailey's and wearing fuzzy slippers. I simply LOVE your flower shots. Each one is beautifully composed and the little flower power bug in the first one is adorable. :-) Hang on friend.....Autumn's cool temps are just around the corner!

  23. Hey there Jon!

No worries, my friend. That's happened to me before where I somehow totally missed someone's post, so I completely understand.

Thank you for your kind words. I love photography and the journey in learning about it.

"was probably made when Edison was still working in his Menlo Park studio."

OMG, I laughed my ass off that. Hilarious!

"I lived most of my life in hot climates (Southern Calif. and West Texas) and HATED the heat. And there's nothing more depressing than living in a place with no change of seasons."

I couldn't agree with you more. I've lived hot climates myself, so I know what you mean about HATING the heat because I do to. I don't care how cold it gets you will never hear me complain. However, HEAT makes me crazy insane. When I moved back East in 2001, I never realized how much I missed the change of seasons. Even though I hate it, I can deal with summer because I know that I'll be getting fall, winter, and spring!

Isn't winter fabulous? Many people don't like it, but I LOVE it. There is nothing quite as glorious as the first snowfall of the season.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great holiday weekend!

  24. Yes...I do know how MUCH you adore Autumn, Lisa! Isn't it a GLORIOUS season? It is truly the best. And I feel sorry for those who live in climates that don't experience it because it's magical.

" but if you're going to hold a Catholic ruler to my knuckles, I must pick Heat Miser....with a caveat."

HA! That made me laugh out loud! And it's funny though because I think the majority of people feel as you do. They don't like extremes, whether it be extremely cold or extremely hot. Which is why most people LOVE Fall and Spring because they are right in the middle.

Thank you :) I had such a fun day taking these photographs. The weather was perfect, so I was able to stay outside practically all afternoon; enjoying the flowers.

Yup...Autumn's cool temps are just around the corner!

    And I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    *dancing for joy*

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great rest of your weekend and Happy Labor Day to you and your family!

  25. I am the Heat Miser, Ron, and damn proud of it!

I love heat, sunshine, humidity, sweat, and anything else associated with summer. I swear I will live in a place where I can wear a t-shirt and shorts at all freaking times! And I think winter sucks big time!

Having said that, I respect all my winter-loving amigos like yourself who have deluded themselves into believing that freezing your ass off and sunset at 3 pm is some kind of gift from Heaven. (Hint: you're looking in the wrong direction!)

Winter to me is a giant freezing nun that never goes away!

Nevertheless, these photos are fabulous, as I knew they would be, thanks to your incredible eye and warm heart. Thank you so much for posting them and I will refer back to this post when it's time to make snow angels!

    Take care, buddy!

  26. Hey there Rob!

OMG, I could tell from the tone of your comment that you are livid that summer is coming to a close.

Oh well, that's exactly how I feel when summer hits (it sucks big time), so I completely understand.

I think I should be living in Antarctica where it's freezing, and you should be living in Florida or somewhere in CA where it NEVER gets cold.

I honestly love living in the northeast with the changes of seasons, it's just summer is one season I could do without.

Thank you for your kind words. I had so much FUN taking these pics. And the weather that day was utterly perfect, which made it so much more enjoyable.

Thanks so much for stopping by. And have a faaaaabulous week, buddy!

  27. It's so weird, I cannot post being signed in from Disqus, and can't comment on some blogs AT ALL, there is literally NO little box to click for 'I'd rather post as a guest' either. There's a comment box, but that's it. OH, technology and me... like oil and water. Anyway... it seems I can post as a guest here... so while that's working... let me hurry and get some words down!!
Ok, so I'm going to HELL. You know, I'm an Autumn chick!! I can't say 'Snow Miser' because I don't like snow very much... and ice... grrrrr. But winter over summer for sure, I'll definitely give you that. Fall, Winter, Christmas... then things get ridiculous for a while, like if it's a blizzard year. Bleh. But that summer humidity....oh, how I know the misery, so am totally with you there!
    Beautiful flower pictures! xo

  28. Hey there Mary!

That is so weird because I have had any feedback about that issue from anyone else. Although I will say that over summer, Disqus added new options to leaving comments so perhaps that's it. There was a time (back in early spring) when I had issues responding to comments on my own blog because it kept making me do the CAPTCHA thing which took FOREVER.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Appreciate that.

"Ok, so I'm going to HELL. You know, I'm an Autumn chick!! I can't say 'Snow Miser' because I don't like snow very much... and ice... grrrrr. B"

HA! No, you're not going to hell because I think most people say the same thing. Most people are Fall and Spring people.

"But that summer humidity....oh, how I know the misery, so am totally with you there!"

OMG, wasn't it HORRENDOUS this past summer? And even now, in September, it's still feels like summer with the heat and humidity.

I am soooooooooo looking forward to when FALL finally comes.
