I saw this question asked on a blog that I follow and thought it was interesting, so I decided to respond with my answer on my own blog.

The question, of course, is referring to what are you looking forward to after COVID?

Now before I answer, allow me to repeat something I've shared in past posts about COVID, which is that I definitely feel there were positive things I learned from this virus. However challenging and inconvenient COVID made things for all of us this past year, I sincerely see it as a time of enlightenment.

With all the restrictions the virus placed on what we could and could not do, it forced me to stop, look, and listen to what is really important. I feel as though my priorities and my hopes for my future are different than how they were last year.

Several days ago, I found myself listening to an oldie but goodie 90's song on my smartphone and was suddenly transported back to that time. A time in my life when I couldn't even image anything like COVID in the future. In retrospect, I see how often I took everyday living for granted; incomprehensible to me that it could ever be taken away.

COVID has taught me to live right now. And live it consciously.

Another thing I've learned is to set an intention before stepping out of bed in the morning by asking myself, "What am I going to contribute (give) to the world today?"

With all the drama that's been going on not only here in America but all over the world, it's so easy to focus on the drama and get drawn deeper into it, and then add to it.

But I choose to focus on what I can do in my everyday life to make the world a better place.

Therefore, I am extremely grateful for what COVID revealed to me.

But at the same time, like so many of you, I am looking forward to when certain things return to, dare I say, normal

1) Hugging (and shaking hands):

I am so looking forward to hugging people. And I'm not talking about going up to a complete stranger and hugging them, I'm talking about hugging people that I know, like friends and people who I work with, and no longer feeling apprehensive about, "Oh..wait, should I hug them? Are they okay with that?"

I miss giving someone I care about a big ol' teddy bear hug. I used to work with a woman who loved to give hugs. And the first time she hugged me she said, " Wow...now THAT'S a hug." Because I hugged her back like I really meant it.

I also miss being introduced to someone for the first time and shaking their hand. You can tell so much about a person through a handshake, whether it be a man or a woman.

To be honest, I have never been frightened by COVID. Not even in the beginning. I don't know why, but I've never been paranoid about other people standing close to me or touching me. The only reason I wear a mask and maintain 6 feet of distance from others is for them, because I can see how petrified people are. But as far as my own safety? I have not a single drop of fear.

So yeah, I'm looking forward to hugging again.

2) No Masks

Which brings me to my second looking forward to: No Masks. I am beyond over wearing a mask. And the primary reason is because I can't stand anything interfering with my breathing. I'm one of those people who loves to have wind/air freely blowing on my face. In fact, I love it so much that I sleep (even in the winter) with my ceiling fan on because I like air hitting my face when I sleep.

I also long to see a person's complete face when I'm talking to them.

And another thing, I so look forward to seeing SMILES again. 😃

3) Dining Inside

I look forward to ordering something either in a restaurant or cafe, and sitting inside to eat and/or drink it. There is a delightful coffee spot in Old City, Philadelphia that I love to meet up with a friend of mine and enjoy a coffee and pastry or bagel, while sitting inside amongst the cool-looking atmosphere (local artwork and photographs on the walls), listening to the great music they play.

4) Theatre

I can't wait to be able to go to the theatre again. Having been a stage actor myself, there is nothing more thrilling than attending the theatre and seeing a live performance.

Going to the theatre (to me, anyway) is a spiritual experience because a theatre is like entering a church. It's a sacred space.

To be able to walk into an arena; sit there with other people; and enjoy something happening in real time right before your eyes, is like no other experience.

And that goes for both performing and watching.

5) New York City

This month marks one whole year since I've been to New York City. And anyone who has been reading my blog for several years, knows how much I love that city. So it's been very hard for me.

I am intensely homesick for the city I call "my home."

Hopefully sometime during this spring or summer, the city will be more open. The whole reason for me being in NYC is to do things. And to do things with crowds of people all around me. I mean, that's what gives New York its soul and its energy -- the people.

I also can't wait for the bus schedule to open with more available times, because right now the buses to New York are running on such limited schedules.

Yes, New York has been through a lot of turmoil these past 12 months. However, I know New York very well because I've witness its high times and low times. And what's so amazing about the Big Apple is that it always rises from the ashes and comes back stronger.

Always.

----------------------------

So there you have it, folks. Five things that I'm looking forward to after COVID.

Oh, and I forgot one more thing.

This is how I feel about wearing a mask...

Have a grrrrrreat rest of your week, everyone! 💗

P.S. Please feel free to express what you are looking forward to after COVID

  1. Lol, that’s a mask I have not seen before! I’m also looking forward to all of those things. I miss hugs and it’s been awkward seeing friends and NOT giving hugs. Feels so strange. I’m sick of masks because it’s annoying with my glasses, between the fog up or my glasses sliding down the mask. And while I love dining outdoors in the summer, boy do I miss eating inside and having coffee with friends. We don’t go to many live events, but we did miss out on shows we’d already bought tickets for and were canceled (Straight No Chaser and Todd Rundgren for my daughter's and my birthdays). But the #1 thing I miss most is travel. We had tentative plans to go to Kauai the first week of March this year, but of course not doing it now. I was wondering when you’d be going to NYC again. A year is a long time to wait! Let’s hope things start opening up and herd immunity kicks in soon. Happy Hump Day!

  2. Ron, I was not expecting that last photo of the mask. LOL! You are HILARIOUS! And yes, I feel the same about masks. I'm so sick of wearing them. Not only does it feel like I'm suffocating, but the skin on my face is always breaking out because of the masks. I too miss hugging, and dining indoors with friends. It's not the same sitting outside, especially in winter.

I love your perspective on COVID and discovering the good. True, there is so much drama going on, so it's important to contribute to the good. What's that saying? "Be the change we want to see in the world."

I am looking forward to getting on a plane and visiting friends in Europe.

Thanks for always brightening my mornings, Ron! xo

  3. My life has not changed in any real way with the covid restrictions. I don't mind wearing a mask on the few occasions I leave my apartment and in the beginning there was a problem with the food supply but other than that - same old, same old. What I do miss tho is petting all the dogs who live in my building...I don't miss people a bit since I don't interact with anyone on a regular basis but I sure do miss loving on all the puppies.

  4. I just couldn't resist making that mask. I took that selfie photo about two months ago, and then edited it with a graphic I found online. It perfectly expresses my sentiments about wearing a mask. LOL!

" I miss hugs and it’s been awkward seeing friends and NOT giving hugs. Feels so strange."

Yes, I know, and I TOTALLY agree with you. My natural instinct when I see a friend is to HUG them, and it took my a long time to get used to not being able to that out of respect for their personal space.

" it’s annoying with my glasses, between the fog up or my glasses sliding down the mask."

OMG...thank you for mentioning that because it's the same with me. I wear reading glasses and it's so freaking annoying to have to put them on at work while I'm waiting on a client and they FOG up. It's the worst, isn't it?

"But the #1 thing I miss most is travel. We had tentative plans to go to Kauai the first week of March this year, but of course not doing it now."

Yes, that's another thing I miss, traveling. And can you imagine what it's like to get on a plane and fly for several hours and wearing a mask the whole time!?!?

I'm hoping to get to NYC sometime in the Spring before it gets too hot in mid-Summer. I miss it sooooooooo much! I normally take Mega Bus, but their scheduling is so erratic. I would love to take Amtrak, but I don't want to spend $80.00 BOTH ways. That is just too expensive.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Happy Hump day to you too!

  5. Hey there, Candice!

I know, I just couldn't resist sharing that mask because it TOTALLY expresses my feelings about having to wear those damn things. LOL!

Me too. I never have skin breakouts, but I have noticed that I will get them if I wear my mask several days in a row. Many women are frustrated with them because they haven't been able to wear lipstick for so long.

I don't mind sitting outside, I really don't, even during the winter. However, most people I know don't like to be cold, so it's hard to make plans to go out for coffee. Oddly enough, the heat of summer bothers me more, when it comes to sitting outside.

"What's that saying? "Be the change we want to see in the world."'

YES! And thank you SO MUCH for sharing that because I was trying to think of that saying while I was writing this post, but couldn't remember it. It's exactly what I meant about contributing to the world.

Yes, flying again! I know people are currently doing it, but it's such a pain in the ass. I work with a woman who just came back from a trip in which she had to fly and said that it was a hassle.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaaaabulous rest of your week!

  6. " What I do miss tho is petting all the dogs who live in my building."

OMG, Grace, you know, I never even thought of that but you're right. I'm sure dog owners don't want people petting them. It's funny though, because last weekend I was sitting in the park having a cup of coffee and listening to music, when a woman with her dog walked past my bench and the dog immediately came over to me, wagging its tail. I pet the dog, but didn't even think about if the owner was okay with that.

Being that I living in a city and still work, I'm outside mingling with people all the time so I have to wear a mask or people get so freaked out.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Always nice to see your comments! Have a great rest of your week!

  7. Ron, I'm looking forward to ALL those things as well. Additionally, I'm looking forward to performing music again -- live concerts, with lots of happy people clapping and enjoying the sounds. AND especially, I'm looking forward to an absence of fear. I see so many folks who are paranoid about others getting near them, so many who distrust the experts in science and government on every aspect of the virus. I also know the forced isolation and separation is wearing on everyone, from the little kids in school to the old folks in rockers.

I love your positive attitude! I'm trying hard to maintain my Little Debbie Sunshine persona, but I can see this is wearing on me, too (probably more so since we've had such a beastly February weather-wise!). Hang in there, my friend! xx

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ron, the mask photo? ROFLMAO!!! Did you make that mask? If you did, can you make me one and I'll PAY you! Oh man, we are sick and tired of the mask-wearing as well. When COVID first started and we worked from home it wasn't an issue because we weren't around other people. But when we both went back to working onsite? That's when we had to wear one all day.

And I hear you on the hugging because we don't hug our friends or even some of our elderly family members, just to be on the safe side. Thank god my girlfriend and I live together because at least we can hug each other!

I was wondering if you'd been to New York because you haven't posted photos of the city in a long time. Hopefully you'll be getting back in the next few months.

As always, great post dude! You're right, as shitty as COVID has been, there is a great deal we can learn from it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hey there, Debbie!

" I'm looking forward to performing music again -- live concerts, with lots of happy people clapping and enjoying the sounds."

Yes! Oh... don't you just miss performing music and the whole experience of performing live with an audience? There is nothing like it because it's a shared experience.

"'I'm looking forward to an absence of fear. I see so many folks who are paranoid about others getting near them..."

Meeeeeeee too! And living in a city, where people are right up next to each other, the fear and paranoia in people's eyes behind their masks is constant. I think a lot people distrust the experts because the information keeps changing, and many times is contradictory. So people don't know what to believe. To be honest, in as much as I believe that this virus is very real, I don't believe everything I'm being told.

Excellent point you brought up..." the forced isolation and separation is wearing on everyone, from the little kids in school to the old folks in rockers." I think the isolation has been the most damaging for so many people because our natural instinct is to mingle with others. And yes, particularly the littles kids in school and the elderly.

And trust me, this is wearing on me as well and I have to keep my attitude in check because I sometimes feel myself getting down in the dumps. But I'm a fighter, I will not allow this epidemic to stop me from seeing the good or immobilize me.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and feelings. Very much appreciated, my friend!

  10. .Hiya Matt!

HA! No, I didn't make that mask, but I made (edited) the photo. I took that picture months ago, and then found the finger gesture graphic online, and then overlaid it onto the photo.

"When COVID first started and we worked from home it wasn't an issue because we weren't around other people. But when we both went back to working onsite? That's when we had to wear one all day."

You're so right! At the beginning when everyone was working from home, we didn't need the masks as much. However, not that many people have returned to work and mingling with the public, it's mandatory. I have to wear one at work as well. All day.

So many people I know who's family is close by say the same thing about hugging family members. You're so blessed to be living with your girlfriend because you have each other to HUG. And that's AWESOME!

Yes, I haven't posted photos of NYC in a LONG time. I can't wait to get back there and take a TON of photographs. Hopefully soon!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic rest of your week!

  11. Wonderful post, Ron! inspiring, thought-provoking, and humorous. I laughed at that photo of you in the mask. Very funny! Pretty much everything you listed I would list as well. I think we're all beyond over wearing a mask. I thought I was the only one who slept with a ceiling fan on. Like you, I enjoy feeling air on my face when I sleep. My favorite thing about going to the beach on a breezy day is to stand on the water's edge and let the air blow against my face.

Like other have mentioned in their comments, I too am longing for the day when I can travel again. COVID has been so restrictive in traveling. That's what has bothered me the most.

I like the photo collage at the top of your post.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hello there, Daniel!

I'm so over wearing a mask that the photo expresses my feelings so accurately. I should probably actually make one for real and wear it. I can only imagine the reactions I'd get on the street! LOL!

" I thought I was the only one who slept with a ceiling fan on. I too enjoy feeling air on my face when I sleep. My favorite thing about going to the beach on a breezy day is to stand on the water's edge and let the air blow against my face."

Oh god, no, you're not the only one. I freaking LOVE the movement of air on my face. And it's ironic you mention being at the beach at the water's edge because when I lived in South Florida (2 miles from the beach), that was one of my favorite things to do.

    Traveling again. Yes!

Thanks. I made that collage on a free graphic website I often use. It's called Canva.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a fabulous rest of your week, my friend!

  13. Ron, do you know what I can't stand about having to wear a mask? Not being able to wear lipstick at work. And even if I could, no one would even see it. I thought of getting one of those masks that have a pair of lips (with lipstick) on them, just for fun. But the positive side of this is that I've saved a lot of money this past year NOT buying lipstick and cosmetics. LOL!

I miss hugging too. I remember when covid-19 started last year and feeling awkward about even hugging my girlfriends when I saw them. My family that still lives in New York told me that the city is just not the same. Things are starting to open, but slowly. I agree, NY is all about the people and the energy.

I miss socializing with family and friends. And that includes gatherings at home and at places like restaurants. I feel just awful for all the out of work theater people. It's strange to see images of the theater district with everything closed.

That photograph of you with the mask is hysterical. I shared with some of the people I work with and they laughed!

Have a wonderful week and weekend, Ron! xox

  14. Hola Denise!

OMG, I can't tell you how many women that know and work with who are saying the exact same thing. They can't wait to wear lipstick again! But you're right, think of the money you're saving LOL!

"I thought of getting one of those masks that have a pair of lips (with lipstick) on them, just for fun."

Yes, I've seen those and they're adorable! A husband and wife came into where I work a few days ago and they were wearing masks that had a dog's face and a cat's face. They were sooooooooooo cute!

I can't wait for New York City to become more open. I saw several photographs on Instagram of Times Square and it looked like a completely different place. It was deserted! And TS is normally packed with people.

"I feel just awful for all the out of work theater people. It's strange to see images of the theater district with everything closed."

OMG, me too. However, I watched a couple videos on YouTube in which people were raising money for all the actors and stage hands who were out of work. Warmed my heart that people were reaching out to help. So sweet.

HA! I had so much fun making that mask photo. I'm serious contemplating actually making one, just to see what kind of reaction I get.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a super rest of your week and weekend!

  15. Ron, this post gives so much food for thought. I love what you said about setting an intention before stepping out of bed about what are you going to contribute to the world. I need to start doing that because I very often, especially during this pandemic, think primarily about how it's affecting my own life. You get what you give out. I need to remember that. The world could really use some positive energy right now.

I am looking forward to all of the above mentioned. I wear glasses, so the mask thing is a pain. I finally figured out a way to position it so that I don't fog the lenses. I am looking forward to having people over to my apartment. I like having gatherings, where we can eat, drink, talk, and listen to music. I used to go out to dinner with my two friends once a month, so I'll be so happy when we can do that again.

Thank you for your words here, Ron. Well said!

Oh, and your mask? VERY funny. And exactly how I feel too.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Greetings, Clair!

I think we all (myself included) think about how things affect our own lives. And particularly this last year since COVID. But I look at how some people are struggling much more than me from this pandemic, so I consider myself very fortunate in so many ways. Also, I see how people are really getting worn out from this past year and how it's affecting their feelings and emotions. People are also very frightened. But as I shared in another comment, it wears on me too. So I try to keep myself in check.

" I used to go out to dinner with my two friends once a month, so I'll be so happy when we can do that again."

Yes, and to be able to do that indoors. Last spring and summer, it seem like it was starting to get better with partial dinning indoors. But in the fall it spiked again, so when back to outdoor. At least here in Philly.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have terrific weekend!

P.S. Did you get any snow today where you live? We got hit with another snow/sleet storm. And it's still snowing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, we did get snow today, Ron, a TON of it. I think many part of the States are getting snow at the moment. Did you see that even Texas got hit with snow? I feel so bad for that state because of the power outage. I do hope they get their power situation corrected soon. I feel especially concerned for the elderly.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I know, a great deal of the States are getting hit with snow. Yes, I did see what's happening in Texas. I have a close friend who lives in San Antonio who didn't lose power, however, they had a water pipe break from the freezing temps and had to have a plumber come out to fix it. They were without water for awhile. She texted me a picture of all the snow they're getting and OMG...it's A LOT! And who would ever think that Texas would get SNOW?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ron, there is nothing more amazing than feeling the ocean wind blowing across your face. How lucky you were to live only 2 miles from the beach in Florida!

    ReplyDelete
  20. How lucky I was is right, Daniel. I used to like to ride my bike there when I was still in high school. As I got older, I drove my car because I could transport a beach chair and cooler with stuff to drink and eat. I could also drive my friends if they wanted to go.

    ReplyDelete
  21. A great list, Ron, and I so agree in not having been "frightened" by the virus, ever. That's not to say that I fail to follow the necessary protocols but to be honest some are at the point of being off-the-wall. I've been in supermarket aisles looking for an item and people will not pass by, really folks is this necessary? I am masked and so are you and we're not even talking! Yes, people are fearful to the point of the ridiculous like when I see hooks removed from walls so people cannot hang a coat, really?

Back on track, I look forward to no masks but know that even after we are vaccinated it will continue (sigh). Seeing family and friends in distant states and even those nearby! There's not a lot of "live" theatre here in my area, some community shows may resume and we will be going to a classical performance in an area church next weekend. We have been able to dine inside with precautions but still have not done in very often; however, we did outdoor dining last spring & summer. Our Canadian rail trip was cancelled, but we have no plans to go there even afterwards. We plan to concentrate on more travel within the U.S. when possible.

And, yes I also liked your creative mask as it shows what most are feeling now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey there D!

"and I so agree in not having been "frightened" by the virus, ever. That's not to say that I fail to follow the necessary protocols but to be honest some are at the point of being off-the-wall. I've been in supermarket aisles looking for an item and people will not pass by, really folks is this necessary? I am masked and so are you and we're not even talking!"

It's so great to hear someone else say this. Like you, I follow all the protocols, but as far as my own safety, I've never bee afraid. Never.

And yes, I realize that the "masks" will continue even after being vaccinated (BIG sigh!).

I know how hard it has been for you and your husband (and others who have family members in nearby and distance states), not being able to see them. Particularly those with grandchildren.

" We have been able to dine inside with precautions but still have not done in very often; however, we did outdoor dining last spring & summer. "

Yes, same here. Last night while I was walking home from the drugstore, I saw Capital Grill allowing customers to dine inside. It's been so hard for restaurants because with it being winter, people don't want to dine outside, so they're losing business.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and feelings about this topic. Hope you're enjoying a fabulous weekend. It's been snowing here for the past three days, however, today the sun is out. So I'll be spending part of my day outside enjoying it!

  23. Oh, my God, Ron, I love that mask!

And it sums up my feelings toward Covid-19 perfectly!

This is such a fabulous post, Ron. I think it's imperative that we learn lessons from this or any other terrible experience or else it's all wasted.

And we owe it to all the people we lost during the pandemic to come away as better, smarter human beings.

Like you, I miss hugs and handshakes and indoor dining. I look back at all the times I complained about crowds, or spent weekends holed up in my apartment when I could've been mingling with people and I feel so foolish.

Who knew I'd miss all those bodies on the D train?!?

And, of course, don't get me started about the theater. You described the theater experience perfectly: it is sacred and it is beautiful and there is absolutely nothing else like it. We NEED theater!

I miss the New York of 2019, too, and I really appreciate your positive attitude about the city's future.

Sometimes I get really down looking at all these empty storefronts and thinking about how life used to be. Luckily we have people like you to keep us going.

New York misses you, buddy, and so do I!

And when that great day comes and you make your triumphant return to the Big Apple, I'm going to be waiting for you when you get off the bus with a handshake, a hug, and plenty of New York attitude!

    Take care!

  24. "And when that great day comes and you make your triumphant return to the Big Apple, I'm going to be waiting for you when you get off the bus with a handshake, a hug, and plenty of New York attitude!"

Rob, that TOTALLY made me smile! Thank you! And, yes, I am soooooooooooooooo looking forward to making my return to the Big Apple. And I have a feeling as the New York skyline comes into view from the New Jersey side, through the windows of the bus, I am going to get VERY teary-eyed after not seeing it for a whole YEAR!

"Like you, I miss hugs and handshakes and indoor dining. I look back at all the times I complained about crowds, or spent weekends holed up in my apartment when I could've been mingling with people and I feel so foolish. Who knew I'd miss all those bodies on the D train?!?"

HA! You are so right! It's funny how you miss things (even something like crowded subway cars) when can't ride a subway in almost a year.

I miss the New York of 2019! Hell, I miss the New York of 1970's, because you don't realize how awesome it was until you experienced 2020!

We NEED theater, indeed! In fact, last night I watched a documentary on the creation of the musical, "Wicked." It was so wonderful to see a time when Broadway was thriving and to see theater houses packed with audience members.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a great weekend. And give my love and hugs to New York!

  25. I would agree with all of the things you mentioned. I miss smiles! We are created to be relational beings and touch is an internal part of that experience. It's odd how different parts of the county responded differently to COVID. We were completely locked down for a while, but restaurants have been open for inside dining for months. Our grand girls have been in-seat at school since September with no catastrophic issues. Many events were canceled, but others have demonstrated they can safely operate within guidelines. COVID has forced us to focus on what is truly important in our lives and what is possible to live without. It's heightened a sense of awareness and priorities. I'm just very sad this virus has become so politically weaponized...like everything else in our country these days. But, I'm with you in I'm looking forward to returning to "normal" life one of these days. X

  26. "I'm just very sad this virus has become so politically weaponized...like everything else in our country these days. "

Lisa, you're absolutely right about that. 100%! And that's why I don't believe everything I'm being told about this virus.

It's interesting to read what you shared about how things are in you part of the States. Philly is just now starting to offer indoor dining, but only in certain areas of the city. So happy to hear how things are being handled in your state. Florida too. My brother lives in Florida and he sends me photos of how open things are in that state, yet they are being very careful.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and feelings, I appreciate that.

And yes....touch is an internal part of being human. Gosh, how I miss hugs!

    Have a terrific week!

  27. Omg I love that mask! I think cancer taught me about living in the now and appreciating my life, and COVID has reinforced that. And it has changed my work situation in a positive. But I also look forward to hugs and getting together with friends and family. Most pressing for me is I want to see my older son. It's been more than a year now.

  28. I just couldn't resist making that mask LOL!

"! I think cancer taught me about living in the now and appreciating my life, and COVID has reinforced that. And it has changed my work situation in a positive."

That's AWESOME to hear! Isn't it something how often something "good" and "positive" comes from what initially is such a scary and challenging experience? I applaud you for the way you moved through your time with cancer. How very difficult it was for you, you embraced it allowed it to teach you things.

I know, isn't so difficult not being able to get together with close friends and family, and hug them?

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Wishing you a faaaaaabulous week!
