Being that I'm in the beauty industry, I've noticed something very exciting.

Ever since the mask mandates have been lifted, women have been going bonkers purchasing lipstick again. And I have to tell you, it's been so much fun helping them select the perfect shades. Which, by the way, is my favorite cosmetic product to assist with because lipstick does a lot. A woman can wear a lipstick and no other makeup, and if it's the right shade, will instantly make her look and feel like a million bucks. My advice to women has always been that even if you're a minimalist when it comes to makeup, wear a lip color (whether it be a lipstick, lip gloss or lip stain).

Several months ago, the indoor mask mandate was finally lifted here in Philadelphia. We were also given the option to wear or not wear a mask while riding public transportation. However, as you may have seen in the news last month, a mask mandate was once again enforced (on April 18th) because apparently COVID cases were drastically spiking in this city. Now mind you, we were the ONLY city in the U.S. to reinforce the mandate. Therefore, once again we were all required to wear a mask in public indoor spaces.

HOWEVER...

I found it very strange that in only five days (on Friday, April 22nd to be exact), the mandate was lifted, again

Excuse me, but if COVID cases were THAT drastic in our city, tell me, how is it that suddenly (in only FIVE days), everything went back to normal?!?

Makes no sense, does it?

You see, it's stuff like this that causes confusion and frustration because of the mixed messages we're constantly being fed about this virus.

Anyway, moving on...

After 2 1/2 years of abstaining from lipstick, it's been a joy to help my clients select new colors for Spring and Summer. I mean, let's face it, lipstick was pointless during the mask mandate because masks would end up looking like this...

Skincare is another thing that both women and men are currently focusing on because long-term mask wearing has taken a toll on our skin, causing breakouts and even rashes. I've been assisting many customers to select proper skincare products to bring their facial skin back into balance. People don't realize that the skin on our face is much more sensitive than the skin on our body.

Also, with the warmer months approaching and people being outdoors, everyone is now purchasing sunscreen to protect their skin.

I would like to conclude this post by sharing two lipstick tips for anyone out there who enjoys wearing lipstick but may be unsure as to what shades are ideal for them.

1) Undertone - If you have a warm undertone (meaning yellow, golden, or olive) choose lipstick shades that are the opposite (cool tones - pink, burgundy, or wine) because they will compliment your undertone by balancing it. And if you have a cool undertone (meaning pink, red, or bluish), choose lipstick shades that are the opposite (warm tones - coral, orange, or peach) because they will compliment your undertone by balancing it. If you have a neutral undertone (meaning a mixture of both warm and cool), you can wear a variety of lipstick shades.

*Please note: This tip pertains to choosing a lipstick, not a foundation. Foundation should be matched exactly to your undertone.

2) Eyes - You will immediately know that you selected the best lipstick shade when you look in the mirror and notice that your eyes look brighter and more predominant. Trust me, your eyes will let you know which shade is best. And when I demonstrate that to clients while assisting them to select a lipstick, they immediately say, "Oh my god, you're right...I can actually see the difference!"

So ladies, now that you can wear lipstick again, have fun and ENJOY!

Have a colorful week, everyone! 💋

  1. Ron, I know you know how much of a beauty product junkie I am, so I LOVE this post! And yes, it's been the best feeling in the world to wear lipstick again. In fact, while the mask mandates were enforced, I barely wore any makeup with the exception of eye makeup (shadow, liner, mascara and brows). But I barely wore foundation (tinted moisturizer). No blush or lipstick.

What you said about wearing lipstick is so true. If I'm ever feeling blah or sick with a cold, if I give my lips a splash of color, it makes me feel so much better. Lipstick does so much for brightening the face.

I took the undertone quiz and it was correct, I have a warm undertone (yellow, gold, olive). And I think I look best in (as you said) wine, berry or burgundy lipsticks. I usually wear a liquid lipstick because they seem to last much longer than a cream or gloss.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will check out the links later today when I get home from work or on my lunch break. I've been seeing more and more about Merit, so I'm anxious to see their color line. What do you think of NYX? Over the years, I've purchased quite a few lipsticks from them that I really like. Plus, I love their cheap price point. LOL!

GREAT post, Ron! And thanks for your tips. FAB! xo

  2. I wasn’t sure what my undertone was, so I took the quiz and sure enough, neutral! I was sort of all over the place on the answers. I’m rather fair skinned for having very dark brown hair. If I matched a hair color product to my actual natural hair color, it looks fake! So I always go for golden brown highlights because it looks more natural with my skin tone.

I prefer colored lip gloss to regular lipstick. Again, it looks more natural to me. I don’t like to look in the mirror and notice my lips first. But I do think it can look great on others. If I were to pick one lipstick in your photo for me, it would be the very middle one.

I’m over the masks. I still see people here wearing them. We will never be rid of Covid so will people wear masks the rest of their lives? Middle Child was getting a lot of break outs from having to wear her mask at her library job. It was one of the last places to drop the mandate around here.

Glad to wake up and see your post, Ron. Have a great week! XO

  3. Ron, even though I don't wear lipstick, I found this information very interesting. From what you shared, it seems that makeup is an art in understanding color, just like an artist would create a painting.

What you said about skin breakouts and rashes from mask wearing is so true. When I first went back to work in the office, I had my mask on pretty much all day (eight hours) and it really took its toll. I had a lot of breakouts on my nose and chin, which was unusual for me because I hardly ever have skin issues.

And yes, I did see on the news that Philadelphia went back to mask wearing last month. I agree, the whole mask protocol has been confusing and frustrating. I'm so happy that my state lifted the mandate. OVER it!

  4. Hola Denise!

HA! I had a feeling you would enjoy this post, being a beauty product junkie!!! And hasn't it felt great to wear lipstick again? So many of my clients are so happy to be able to take out their lipsticks and swipe them on without worrying about masks. Yahoooooooooo!

"What you said about wearing lipstick is so true. If I'm ever feeling blah or sick with a cold, if I give my lips a splash of color, it makes me feel so much better. Lipstick does so much for brightening the face."

YES! You are so correct. a slash of lip color does wonders for brightening the face and making you feel better.

Isn't that quiz fun? And I found it to be pretty accurate because I tested it several times using different answers and it worked! Liquid lipstick is great if you want long-wear and don't want to reapply all the time. I recommend it a lot to anyone who is going to a party and will be eating and/or drinking because the color stays on and won't transfer.

I LOVE NYX! They have a super selection and, yes, great price point! I always tell my clients that you don't have to spend a fortune on makeup. I've seen a $6.99 lipstick look just as good as a $54.00 one!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a faaaaaaaaaaaabulous week!

  5. "I wasn’t sure what my undertone was, so I took the quiz and sure enough, neutral! I was sort of all over the place on the answers."

When I took it, I too was all over the place with my answers, however, it was accurate for me as well. I'm a cool undertone (lots of pink in my skin, with blueish veins).

"If I matched a hair color product to my actual natural hair color, it looks fake! So I always go for golden brown highlights because it looks more natural with my skin tone."

That's AWESOME!! And you're spot on because brown with golden highlights looks so much more natural. When I used to be a hairstylist and colored my clients hair, I would not go too dark because then it looks (as you said) fake.

"I prefer colored lip gloss to regular lipstick. Again, it looks more natural to me. I don’t like to look in the mirror and notice my lips first. But I do think it can look great on others. If I were to pick one lipstick in your photo for me, it would be the very middle one."

To each his own. Lipstick application is such a personal preference. Some women want a POW-looking lip color, while others like it to be more subtle. But either way, selecting the best shade is important. I love that middle lipstick shade - it's a warm pink.

" We will never be rid of Covid so will people wear masks the rest of their lives? "

A-MEN! And if some people want to wear them, then so be it. Same here, some of the people I work with still wear them. However, I choose not to. And I think it's hysterical how Philly enforced the mandate and then five days later, lifted it.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Happy Monday!

  6. Hellooooooooooo there, Daniel!

".... it seems that makeup is an art in understanding color, just like an artist would create a painting."

Yes! You are absolute right, makeup IS an art. And that's how I always feel whenever I assist a client to select the proper makeup items, whether it be lipstick, foundation, blush, or eyeshadow. Makeup is all about understand what colors can do for each person. It's not about "one size fits all."

"When I first went back to work in the office, I had my mask on pretty much all day (eight hours) and it really took its toll. I had a lot of breakouts on my nose and chin, which was unusual for me because I hardly ever have skin issues."

Same here! And to be honest, I hardly ever break out with blemishes, however, wearing a masks caused my nose to breakout. And for me, it's the hardest blemish to get rid of because it takes so friggin' long.

What I found so frustrating it how serious and stern they got about reinforcing the mask mandate, but then suddenly lifted it FIVE days later. What the hell is that?!?! If some people want to continue to wear a mask, fine, but I'm over it!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Daniel! Have an awesome week!

  7. Ron, it's so funny that you posted about wearing lipstick again because over the weekend I purchased two new shades of lipstick. Actually, one is a lipstick, the other is a lip gloss. I also got a new lipliner because my previous one was so old. It felt so good to put on lip color again!

I've used various brands of lipsticks (Bobbi Brown, Nars, and Urban Decay) to name but a few. A friend of my swears by Bite Beauty lipsticks because she said that the colors are so beautiful, so it's ironic that you mentioned that brand. I have got to check it out the next time I'm in Sephora or Ulta.

I took the color quiz and it was correct, I have a warm undertone. I'm olive. I wear a lot of bluish based pink/burgundy lip shade because they seem to compliment my complexion. And like you said, it brightens up my eyes. My undereye area tends to be dark, so lipstick helps with that.

FUN post, Ron! I love that lipstick color in the photo on the far right middle row. GORGEOUS!

  8. Hey there, Candice!

OMG, that's so funny! I've been wanting to post about how women are once again wearing lipstick again because it's been so much fun to help them select new shades for the Spring and Summer months. It also feels so good to actually SEE people's faces again.

Each one of the brands you mentioned in your comment are brands that I have previous worked for/with at one time in my career. I especially adore Nars products because of the HUGE color selection in not only the lipsticks, but the foundation and concealers as well. It's such a great "artists" line!

Bite Beauty is probably my all-time favorite lipstick brand EVER. She not only makes the best shades, but the quality of the lipsticks is a-mazing. And they are so pigmented.

" My undereye area tends to be dark, so lipstick helps with that."

    Yes....it sure does!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Candice. Have a faaaaaaabulous week!

  9. Oh my god, Ron, what brand lipstick is $58.00!?!? That's insane! I would never spend that kind of money on just a lipstick. A foundation maybe, but not a lipstick.

  10. Tom Ford, can you believe that? In fact, his whole line of makeup is overpriced. I love him, his clothes, and his fragrances, however, his cosmetics are not worth the price - in my opinion.

  11. Ron, I, too, find this mask-on/mask-off stuff confusing. COVID cases are rising here (though hospitalizations aren't). What's with that? If people aren't sick enough to go to the hospital, why are they even bothering to test? Yuck.

Great post, my friend! I think we've all grown more aware of how important skincare is during these trying times. I wear sunscreen Every. Single. Day. I learned a long time ago how important it is to take care of my skin -- after all, it's the only "wrapping" we'll ever have really. And I'm one of those who burns easily (the Irish predominates over the Italian, ha!)

Enjoy the week ahead -- it's supposed to be a scorcher here. xx

  12. Hey there, Debbie!

" COVID cases are rising here (though hospitalizations aren't). What's with that? If people aren't sick enough to go to the hospital, why are they even bothering to test? Yuck."

Yes, and THANK YOU. Yuck! Since day one, everything that has been told to us about this virus is a constant contradiction. CONSTANT. I won't go into anymore of what I think, however, let's just say....NONE OF IT HAS EVER MADE ANY SENSE. And now they're talking about people getting another booster shot.

BRAVO! And good for you! I can't tell you how much I damaged my skin in the 20 years I lived in Florida. I used to sit at the beach for 5-6 hrs with baby oil and iodine slathered all over my body. Can you believe that?

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Stay cool this week. We haven't had any really hot, hot days yet, however, I know it's coming.

  13. Ron, I first discovered Bite Beauty about four years ago when I was in New York City on business. I went to their Lip Lab in SoHo and purchased THREE lipsticks! Out of all the lipsticks I've ever owned, Bite is by far the best in so many ways - the color selection, the pigment, and the various finishes. I LOVE them! I've been ordering them directly from their website because they are getting so hard to find in other stores.

Wonderful post! I really loved reading about undertones and what shades of lipsticks goes best with warm, cool and neutral skin. I took the test and came out neutral, which I always thought I was but was never really sure. I can wear different shades of lipstick, but my favorites are warmish shades (terracotta, orangey reds and peachy pinks). I have auburn hair and green eyes, so those lipstick shades really look nice.

Question: How did you learn about makeup? Did you go to a school? I've always been interesting in makeup myself. I find it very creative.

Thank you for this post, Ron! I love the collage of lip colors!!!!

  14. WOW Clair, that is soooooooooooo COOL! And YES....I've been to their Lip Lab in SoHo myself many years ago. What a faaaaaaaaaaaabulous place, right? And I love how you can create your own color. As you said, the color selection, pigment and finishes are the BOMB. No other lipstick company can compare to how she creates her lipsticks. I know, for some reason, finding Bite Beauty in places like Sephora and Ulta is getting harder and harder. I don't know what's up with that, but I'm glad to hear that you they are still offered online. I've been concerned that Bite Beauty was biting the dust.

"my favorites are warmish shades (terracotta, orangey reds and peachy pinks). I have auburn hair and green eyes, so those lipstick shades really look nice."

Yes...those colors would go FABULOUS with your hair and eyes, and neutral undertone! I ADORE red hair!!!!

I attended cosmetology school and got my license back in the early 80's while I was living in Florida. I learned makeup while I was there, but I also learned it doing theater and doing stage makeup. I've always had an interest in makeup and using it to enhance and balance facial features. Makeup (used the right way) can do so much. And not to mention, so much fun!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Clair. Have a terrific week!

on the subject of make-up...women need to replace with new often!! So many use the same purchase for far too long. It's unhealthy!!

  16. Ron, as I've shared with you in the past, my girlfriend could open her own beauty product store because our bathroom looks like a Sephora. She wanted me to tell you that she enjoyed this post and found it very informative. She took the quiz and the result was that she is COOL. Which didn't surprise me because I always tell her how COOL she is. LOL!

"it's stuff like this that causes confusion and frustration because of the mixed messages we're constantly being fed about this virus." Agree! And it's been going on for over two years. Watch, come Fall the mandates will be enforced again. Over it.

    Thanks for sharing, dude!

And yes, I remember you telling me about your bathroom looking like a beauty store with a plethora of products. I used to be the same way. However, over the years I've "minimized" what I use for skincare. But when I first got in this industry, I had SO MANY products in my bathroom.

And now they're talking about, and yet, ANOTHER booster shot.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Matt. Have a most excellent week!

  19. Ron, first I wanted to say, FUN, & INFORMATIVE post! I read it yesterday but I wanted to come back and leave my comment after I took the quiz. And I LOVE taking quizzes! LOL! I have to say it was spot on in the results stating that I was a warm undertone. Being Italian, I have a light tone, but I've got a lot of olive undertone. I get very dark if I tan.

I found it very interesting in what you said about choosing lipstick shades that are in opposition with your undertone, but it makes perfect sense. Also, noticing what the color does for you eyes. Do many women wear red lipstick anymore? I remember when I was a kid and my mother, aunts, and grandmothers all wearing a matte red lipstick. I enjoy wearing red myself, especially if hubby and I go out for dinner or attend a party. I like wearing a red lipstick with a black dress.

I would love to go shopping with you and have you pick out all my makeup. What fun! I bet your clients adore you.

Thanks so much for sharing this post, Ron. I really enjoyed it. And I'll be checking out the lipstick brands you mentioned this week. xo

  20. Hellooooooooooo there, Elaine!

So happy to know that you enjoyed this post. I had so much fun putting it together and got the idea last week when I was at working helping several women pick out lipsticks. Besides helping someone with skincare, helping someone choose a lipstick is my favorite thing to do. And I'm glad to hear that the quiz result was accurate. Being Italian myself, I also get very dark when I tan. I'm a medium tone, with a cool undertone (lots of pink), but surprisingly I get tan fast.

"Do many women wear red lipstick anymore? I remember when I was a kid and my mother, aunts, and grandmothers all wearing a matte red lipstick. I enjoy wearing red myself, especially if hubby and I go out for dinner or attend a party. I like wearing a red lipstick with a black dress."

OMG...I love, love, love to see a woman in red lipstick! And yes, there are many who wear it. A lot of women want to try a red lipstick but are afraid that it will look too much on them. I inform them that ANYONE can wear red lipstick, it's just a matter of finding the right shade of red. Most people think there is only one shade of red, but there are warm and cool reds.

Can you imagine the two of us going shopping for makeup? FUN, indeed! I enjoy being a personal shopper.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Elaine! Hope you're having a spectacular week!

  21. LOL! You are right about that! There was no point in wearing lipstick under a mask. In fact, one could get away with no makeup except for the eyes! 22. Hey there, Lisa!

I know. I mean what was the point? And yet, I knew more than a handful of women who did a full face and didn't care if everything transferred to their masks. I also saw masks online that had a tiny open window over the mouth area that also had a clear anti-fog plastic window so that the lipstick would show through!

  23. Hey, Ron, thanks for all the great makeup tips. I don't normally wear lipstick, but after reading your post I'm tempted to start.

I'm one of the few people in NYC still wearing masks. Covid is still with us and masks do offer some protection. That said, it is nice to see full faces again--as long as they stay the hell away from me!

    Take care, buddy!

  24. "I'm one of the few people in NYC still wearing masks. Covid is still with us and masks do offer some protection. That said, it is nice to see full faces again--as long as they stay the hell away from me!"

Rob, it's the contradictions about mask mandates that I object to. And not only the masks, but all of it. As I've shared with you before, I do believe that there is such a thing as COVID, however, I don't believe in the way it's being explained to us. And I never have. Therefore, I follow my gut.

Sorry, but masks and vaccines are things that you and I are just going to have to agree to disagree upon. If you want to wear a mask for the rest of your life, so be it. Do it. But I'm not.

And no worries, I promise to stay the hell away from you.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy!

  25. This was a very interesting and informative post, Ron, as others have commented. I will read it again and take the quiz which I did not do before starting this comment.

Many years ago when I was still in the working world, I wore lipstick and jewelry as well, but have been casual about wearing both in recent years. However, after reading some of the reasons to wear lipstick, I may at least try a lip gloss product.

Like yourself (and others) I too am over wearing a mask. Sure, I see people wearing them every day in stores here and out on the street (makes no sense there). There is no longer a mandate anywhere here, except I believe on public transport which I do not use, but instead walk. I agree there has been so much confusing information and also believe that covid will stay around, like the flu and other seasonal afflictions. What saddens me is that I suspect there are some people who will never stop wearing one or even living their life the best they can.

  26. Hello there, D!

The quiz I found interesting because I took it several times, using different scenarios and it seemed pretty accurate as far as I can tell.

"Many years ago when I was still in the working world, I wore lipstick and jewelry as well, but have been casual about wearing both in recent years. However, after reading some of the reasons to wear lipstick, I may at least try a lip gloss product."

Yes, I completely understand that because being in the working world is so different than not. Once someone no longer works (like you said) it become more casual. The thing I really like about lipstick (whether it be a gloss, a balm, a lip stain or a lipstick), it has the ability to brighten the face. In fact, I know many women who only wear lipstick (and nothing else) and it looks as though they have a full face of makeup on because that little be of color makes the whole face GLOW.

" I agree there has been so much confusing information and also believe that covid will stay around, like the flu and other seasonal afflictions. What saddens me is that I suspect there are some people who will never stop wearing one or even living their life the best they can."

Yes, It is sad to see how fearful people still are of COVID; even to come out of their homes and apartments. I know people who work from home; order their groceries from home; literally live their whole life inside because they are petrified to mingle with other people in fear of getting the virus. And I blame that on all the confusing information that's been told to us. Well, I for one refuse to be afraid to be around people and stop living my life. And I work with the public, so I'm out there four days a week, seven hours a day, talking to people and touching their faces. We have very strict sanitation rules to follow, and I follow them. However, I'm not the least bit afraid.

Thanks so much for stopping by, D! Hope you're having a faaaaaaabulous week!

  27. Hellooooo, Ron!
I just recently bought some new makeup AND lipstick. Mainly because of my son’s wedding and not knowing what color dress I’d end up going with, I bought many different shades! It was fun to try them all!

According to the quiz, I'm neutral, but I'd probably wear whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted anyway. I've tried to follow tutorials for various beauty applications but some still might think I attended clown college instead. LOL It's still fun, and I don't care so much whether I'm doing it right or not if I like it. LOL
All of those lips in the photo are just gorgeous!

It's going to take me a little bit to get caught up but I'll be back! Have a great week!

  28. Hellooooooooooo, Mary!

    Great to see you!!!!

As as an artist yourself, I know you understand color. And just like a drawing or a painting, makeup uses color to create a "look." So it doesn't matter what colors or shades that you use because it's "your creation!" However, having been a makeup artist for many years, I have discovered certain things you can do to enhance, balance, and compliment a face, using certain colors. Therefore, that's what I try to do when helping my clients choose foundation, lipstick, blush, etc.

Aren't those lipstick shades faaaaaaaaaaaabulous? Personally, I love darker color lipstick. Very GOTH!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope all is well and that you're enjoying Spring!

  30. That's totally okay! Makeup is not something that everyone has the desire to wear. Even though I've been in the industry for over 35 years, I tell all my clients who want to know about makeup, "Less is more." You should be wearing the makeup, the makeup shouldn't be wearing you. And yet, there are some women who LOVE wearing it. And wearing A LOT!

    To each his/her own.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Great to see you! Hope all is going well with your home!

  31. I don't wear make up. Don't like the way it feels. After putting it on, it feels like I should wash. Plus, I sadly still have hot flashes and while I was still working often had to splash cold water on my face...clearly make up would have been a problem. I did wear lipstick, but once I retired, pretty much stopped wearing it. I'm addicted to lipgloss and lips feel dry when wearing lipstick. But, I do sometimes remember to put it on if we're going out. Then again, we've not been going out thanks to Covid...until just recently. But, you're right, it does add color and brightens up ones face. Spotted you on a mutual blog friends blog and thought I'd pop over to say hi. It's always fun to meet new bloggers.

  32. Ron, I love this post!
All my life, up until "covid" and masks, I wore makeup EVERY day. I wouldn't even go to the store without my war paint. When covid hit and I was under such an enormous amount of stress because the business I bought 4.5 months earlier, was shut down, I just stopped wearing makeup. Now, over 2 years later, I wear it when I want and it really feels liberating!
I did take the test and I am neutral! I always thought I was cool! Well, I am cool, but my under tones aren't cool. lol
I would love for you to do my makeup one day.

  33. Hellooooo, Pam!

So great to see your comment!

What you said about wearing it when you want and feeling liberated is so true! In fact, I've heard that from so many women. Not working and not doing their makeup for over two years gave them a whole new perspective. I even know quite a few women who stopped coloring their hair because they couldn't get to a salon during Covid and ended up embracing their gray hair and LOVING it 💕

Hope all is well with your business. Sending you positive vibes, my friend! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  34. Hello there, Sandy, and welcome!

Yes, I so hear you about wearing makeup and it not feeling comfortable. My outlook on makeup has always been, "Less is more." Also, makeup is not for everyone. I think makeup is good to enhance someone's features. And a little goes a long way if you know how to use it. Makeup is an art.

Again, I'm sorry for the delay in responding to your comment. So nice to meet you, Sandy.

    Have a great day!
