I’m sure you’ve all heard the common blogging term “lurking.”

Personally, I’ve never really understood why this term is used, because it denotes something sneaky.

I looked up the word lurk in Webster’s Standard Dictionary, and this is what it said:

To prowl stealthily; to lie in wait unnoticed

That sounds like something a wild tiger would do in the jungle, as it awaits to POUNCE on it’s dinner.

But I’ve got to be honest here, when I first started blogging, there were times when I felt like I was lurking on someone’s blog, simply because I kept hearing that “term” in my head and thought that I might be doing something “blog taboo” just for reading and never commenting.

And WHY?

I mean, say that I discover someone’s blog that I happen to really enjoy, but perhaps never decide to leave a comment. I may even return for several visits and read through some of their past posts, and may even check out some of the people on their blogroll.

I don’t believe that’s LURKING.

It’s called READING.

And that’s one of the joys of a blog, is it not?

However, there may be bloggers out there who read for ulterior motives, but let’s face it, with all the stat counters available, it’s a little hard to go unnoticed.

I for one, welcome any and all people to read Vent. And however wonderful it is to receive comments, that’s totally up to reader. People are not required to speak…they can simply read.

I think as bloggers, we should watch how the word LURK is being used. It has a negative connotation to it.

And it would certainly make visiting someone’s blog a lot more comfortable…don’t ya think?

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

  1. *GiGGLeS* Yeah I guess you're right!

Being really new to blogland, I wasn't quite sure how the system worked.

I was intimidated by bloggers that had A LOT of friends and comments. Because I thought that if I left a comment for them, they may think that I'm expecting them to Read me too!!! When really I just love their blog and wanted to comment on it!!!

    SILLY HUH? :-)!!!

But really... poeple LOVE having readers and making friends! The blog is PUBLIC after all! It's not like they'll tell me to 'piss off' right? :-) *GiGGLeS*

It was the same with you! I had been reading you ever since that post for Nitebyrd, because your blog entertained me, but i was too shy to comment!

And then, ya know, it kind of gets to a point where the longer I left it... the more embarrassing it was! :-P *GiGGLeS*

And then you did a post on DICSO!!! And I was like "OH BUGGER IT!" I Love Dicso... and I'm Damn well gonna let him know! :-) *heeeheee* xx

  2. I see your point Ron, the term lurk does seem negative. In reading the stats on my blog, I know there are a lot of people who read it but do not comment. That's okay though because I do not always comment on every blog that I read. In fact, I subscribe to about 100 blogs and probably only comment regularly on about 10 of them. I don't know exactly why?? Once in a while I will leave a comment just to let them know I have been reading. I really have no excuse other than sometimes I just don't have anything to say.

  3. Maybe a better term would be "Evesdropping" but I guess that has a negative conotation as well. And, it isn't really evesdropping if the people having the conversation are doing it loudly and in public, right? Because that's what we're doing with blogging.

The term lurking doesn't really bother me...and people reading my blog but not commenting doesn't upset me either...although I love getting comments and would prefer people dropped me a line! Makes me feel loved...or appreciated...or at least read. lol

It's interesting to hear the motivation behind why different people blog. I did it as a way to keep writing daily and for fun, a way to connect in the cyberworld and keep in touch with family and friends. I think it's a great way to stay connected to myself as well...my inner voice. Everyone hears voices in their head, right? Oh, that's just me...well, never mind.

  4. I have stumbled upon some blogs that I enjoy and will go back to occasionally but not add to my blogroll or make a comment on.
Then there are those where I do comment and the person doesn't comment back or visit my page. There are others that I would visit daily but have gotten the feeling that they already have their group of blog buds and don't care to include others. You know, he/she is just not that into me. oh.the.horror So after two, maybe three unanswered comments I wouldn't leave another.
I have Sitemeter, and some of the towns I recognize from knowing where a few bloggers are from, but others not. And because of those stat counters, sometimes I probably would stay longer on some pages but don't want the person to get the idea that I was hanging there tooooo long, altho isn't that what we are supposed to do... stay and read?? I personally like when I see that someone has visited for awhile on mine and then left a message. :)
Then there's been that occasional time I was reading someone and had to get up from the computer for something but forgot to get back to it. Yikes... I'm now considered a stalker having been on their page for like an hour. LOL

Blogland is an interesting place. I've always needed some form of additional communication and this sure works for me. Before we had a computer I was on the phone alot. When I was young I wrote letters.
It's interesting, but my husband is not into any of this AT ALL and he doesn't quite understand it. He's actually been a little jealous at times (oh please... Scorpio energy is so intense) and for a happy Sag like myself it's just the way I am. No ulterior motives... just want to be curious, learn things, chat with others. We've been together a LONG time and he has absolutely nothing to worry about with anyone either online or in person. And he does know that I completely adore him and him me. But sometimes I think he wishes the computer would crash again. LOL

  5. I kinda like the word "lurk" because it is a bit dark and mysterious. That's just me, though.

When I first discovered blogs, I lurked forever, just soaking things up because it was so amazing to me. I still lurk on some of my favorite blogs because, believe it or not, I can't think of anything to say! LOL

Have a great weekend, Ron. :-*

  6. Mornin' Nitebyrd~

    ME too!! ME too!!

There are still blogs I enjoy visiting...and simply read, because either I can't think of anything to say, or I just like reading them.

    (kind of like a newspaper)

I think the word "lurk" may feel differently to different people. So, hey...if you like it...then you like it.

    I appreciate your sharing!

Hope you have an AWESOME weekend, dear lady!

Thank you MUCHO for stopping by!!

  7. Morning VBF~

    You're so RIGHT, my friend!!!

When I first started out blogging...the whole idea of leaving a comment DID feel intimidating. And it's funny, because most of my non-blogger friends who read Vent, prefer to send me an email to comment on a post. And I understand.

And then..as you shared. Sometimes it takes a little warming up to a blog, until you feel comfortable enough to join in on the comments.

    Same thing with me!

And you hit the nail on the head with your comment..."The blog is PUBLIX after all!"

That's my point. It's THERE. And for me...people can enjoy my blog however they wish. Without feeling like they need to do something blog protocol, ya know?

And I am SOOOOOO damn happy that YOU felt comfortable to leave me a comment when you did!

But up until that time...you were simply reading. And that's cool too!

Thanks for sharing today, dear lady. And for adding your BRIGHT energy here!

    Have a FABU weekend!!!!!

  8. Morning Nicole~

I think a lot of bloggers do as you shared here...I know that I DO! I visit several, however, don't always comment. Sometimes it's nice sitting with a cup of java in morning and reading the "blog newspaper."

    tee, hee!

And like you shared...hey, sometimes we don't have anything to comment...we just enjoyed the READING.

Thanks alot for dropping in on this Friday morning, Nicole.

    Always nice seeing ya!

P.S. I'll be by later this weekend to see how Flat Nicole is doing!!!

  9. Howdy Rhea~

    Mornin'!!!!

Hey, I hear voices in my head TOO!!!

    HONEST!!

It IS interesting to hear the motivation behind starting a blog, isn't it??? I know of several people who began it as a way to stay in contact with family members. That's the GREATEST thing about a blog...it can be anything you what it to be!

It's also interesting to see how a blog incarnates as grows.

And yes...because it's a BLOG, it IS open to the public, to view and read.

I know that the word "lurking" may not have the same FEELING as it does for every blogger. So if it doesn't bother you...that's COOL!

As always...I thank you for your visits and sharing, Rhea!!!!!!

    Enjoy your weekend!

It's suppose to be HOT here this weekend.

    Oy VEY!

  10. Morning Crystal Chick!

You have the most WONDERFUL energy!!! It's such a pleasure reading your comments.

    You're very, very funny!!!!

(I feel very blessed to have people here, who have an awesome sense of HUMOR)

It's so enjoyable to read how you get into the horoscope as I do!!

And YES, I agree with you...that's the point...to stay and enjoy reading someones blog. I guess we all have different ways of viewing a blog. For me, I see a blog as a newspaper that is open 24/7 for the world to read. And yes...it does have the option to comment, true...but as far as I'm concerned, it's not mandatory. And "lurking" sounds like it is.

I guess we all hear it as something different.

I'm SOOOO glad I got to meet you, M. It's so much fun "chatting" with you.

Thanks for stopping by today, and I hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend!

P.S. Oh man...I had my last computer crash too...isn't that fun? NOT!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I wouldn't know (or care) if I had lurkers on my blog. I don't see that it matters. What I don't like are anonymous comments so I don't allow them, but if I get a new blogger commenting I always visit them - it's common curtesy in my book.

  12. When you said: 'You're very, very funny!!!' it reminded me of this:

Henry Hill: You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.
Tommy DeVito: What do you mean I'm funny?
Henry Hill: It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy.
    [laughs]
Tommy DeVito: what do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?
Henry Hill: It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, the way you tell the story and everything.
Tommy DeVito: [it becomes quiet] Funny how? What's funny about it?
Anthony Stabile: Tommy no, You got it all wrong.
Tommy DeVito: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?
    Henry Hill: Jus...
    Tommy DeVito: What?
Henry Hill: Just... ya know... you're funny.
Tommy DeVito: You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
Henry Hill: Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?
Tommy DeVito: No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the fuck am I funny, what the fuck is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!
Henry Hill: [long pause] Get the fuck out of here, Tommy!
Tommy DeVito: [everyone laughs] Ya motherfucker! I almost had him, I almost had him. Ya stuttering prick ya. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.

    HAHAHAHAHA

  15. I want to confess something.

I've been "lurking" on your blog from time to time. And I don't comment.

I'm sorry for this. But I like doing things under cover. It feels wrong somehow, but sooo right.

    OK. I'm a weirdo.

Seriously, I liked the post and sorry for being suggestive above. I'm just odd. I enjoy your blog immensely and some days I may just "lurk"

    ReplyDelete
  16. Howdy Boondock~

    DAMN...you cracked me up!!!

    That's hysterical, girl!

But see, that's the whole point of this post...I don't SEE this as LURKING...I see it as READING. And you and whoever else's wishes to just sit back and read...you go for it!

    You're not a weirdo...

I do the same damn thing!

(some days, I just don't want to talk, ya know?)

I'll tell...it's a pleasure having you here whether you comment or read...so thank you!

    You're FUNNY!

(and I just got finished telling CyrstalChick that I've got the most humorous bunch of readers, here)

    Enjoy your day!!!!

  17. the word lurking does't really bother me bu I can see what you mean.

Everyone is wlcome to visit my blog as often and for as long as they like. I know a lot more people visit my blog than comment. None of my RL friends who read comment exceptI did have one anon comment last summer from the guy I had just broken up with. Most of the RL readers tens to comment by email. IM or text.

I tend to leave comments on all blogs I read although sometimes I don't have anything to say so I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good Evening Lady~

Thank you so much for sharing on this post!!!

I think more people visit than comment on MOST blogs. And definately, like YOU, my RL friends email me too!

My feelings too...people are welcome to read and visit here as long as they wish. It's GREAT to have readers!

Sometimes on newer blogs that I visit, I wait awhile until a post really HITS me and then I comment.

I visit a lot of template designing blogs...and those, I mostly just read and get information. Sometimes I'll leave a "thank you comment" just to let them know I appreciated their help!

It's nice seeing you today, Lady. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

The weather here, feels so much like Spring...it's beautiful!

  23. WHOA!! Wait just a freaking minute here boys.
First of all, Jeff dahling, are ya trying to upstage me??? I finally find someone who thinks I'm FUNNY ... no, wait... 'VERY, VERY FUNNY' and I have to COMPETE right from the getgo to hold on to that ranking.
Okay mustache, I've got one award under my belt so don't EVEN get me riled or I'll find Val and we'll come out West and hang some drywall.

AND Ron darling, when you use ( ) that doesn't mean you are in stealth mode, K??? I can still read what's in between them.

    LOLOLOLOL

    I love this blog!!!

I guess I should end with a couple of jokes....
Q: What do you get when you cross a matzo ball with LSD?
    A: A trip to Israel.

Did you hear about Tempura House?
It's a shelter for lightly battered women.

  28. Uh oh......

    <-- lurks

Well, I have a read or twenty.....

Actually, my practice is to give a look alllllllllll the way back to the beginnings of the weblog--kinda get a feel for how it came into being and how it's evolved.

And then, I end up making a comment or twenty to the current date's entry.

I have a counter thingy and don't know how to use it, other than the final number shows how many visitors you've had.....and I rarely check there--only a glance when I'm checkin' out how many days until Halloween. LOL

    G'head....I checked. LOL
    194---cuz I knew you'd wanna know!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good Saturday Mornin' Mel!!

Hey. .I think your practice is really neat!

That's a great way to get a feel for the blog. And then, like you said...you make a comment.

(up until that point...you're simply reading)

It's kind of like when you meet someone new...and eventually become friends.

Ohhhh...ohhhh and thanks for giving me the countdown for Halloween!!! That gives me 194 days to decided on a costume!!!

I hope it's warmed up in your neck of the woods, and you're enjoying a beautiful Spring weekend!!

(It was 80 degrees here, yesterday...and NO humidity...I was wearing my thong)

  32. I agree with a lot of what has already been said..so there is nothing for me to say. I almost decided to just lurk and leave. hee, hee.

I really think crystalchick summed it up for me. Sometimes I feel out of place...not witty, sad, angry, etc enough. Also, if I need a dictionary to understand what they are saying I tend to quietly leave.

Some blogs I'll go in a few times and "sit a spell" before I chat. :)
I instantly felt at home here though! :)

I don't mind lurkers or anonymous because I do love a good mystery!!

Good post Ron dear heart..I hope you have a wonderful weekend too!

    ReplyDelete
  33. This is very well said, Ron, and I completely agree.

Normally, if I take the time to visit a blog, rather than just reading the post from my reader, then I also take the time to leave a comment to let the person know I was there.

There are a few blogs I 'read' the posts of on a daily basis and hardly ever comment. This is because these blogs receive about 100 comments on each post. So, I guess I figure my little comment isn't going to mean all that much.

  36. Evening Crystal Chick~

Ok...you are NOT going to believe this!!!!

But when I was leaving that comment to Rhea (and I swear to God) I ALMOST said PHYILLIS DILLER...instead of Joan Rivers!!!

    You are soooo intuitive!!!

    It's that cool????

    And I LOVE her too!!!

Actually, when I was performing in a show in Lake Tahoe in 1977, she rented her home out to the cast...so I lived in her house for 5 weeks during the run of the show!!!

It was a lovely home that sat right on the edge of a mountain, that overlooked Lake Tahoe. The view was breathtaking!!

I still can't believe you said Phyllis Diller!!!

Hey...and I HOWLED at your JOKE!!!

    tee-hee!

Yes...you said something that's true for me too. Some blogs I've visited, were a little challenging to understand...and I simply moved on.

For me, something has to CLICK to want to leave a comment. And also, as you shared...I have sometimes felt "out of place" at certain blogs. It's an "energy thing."

I feel that all readers should have the freedom to do as they please, visiting someone's blog...without feeling as though their LURKING.

Thanks SO MUCH for adding your thoughts, feelings, and humor to this post, dear friend.

    It's always appreciated and enjoyed!

Yes, I'm much the way you are, when it comes to the blogs I have on my reader. If I take the time to visit, I will definately comment.

I read on a daily basis, a blog called DOOCE. She will OCCASIONALLY leave comments open on certain posts, because her readership is MASSIVE. At times, I've seen over 2 thousand comments!! Most of the time I do not comment, but there are other times, I DO. Something just spurs me to do so. She has one of the most awesome blogs I've ever read.

Hope you're having a FABULOUS weekend, Misty!

P.S. Hey, please feel free to drop your entrecard anytime you wish. It would be a pleasure to have your blog on my "blog of the day." I really don't drop my own card...I just like hightlighting other blogs that I enjoy!

  44. That is sooooo cool. I saw PD at one of the casinos in A.C. years ago. What fun. I don't know if it was on HBO but I remember watching her routine when I was younger and almost could recite parts of it. Wasn't there an imaginary husband named Fang and his BIG mother. And that laugh... heh heh hehehehe. I think she led into the piano playing with talking about all the kids in the playpen at the same time and there being a rainbow over them for all the wet diapers. LOL Then I think she went into Ebbtide.

What a terrific experience that must have been for you... not just being in the show, but in her home and the views, etc.

Hope you are enjoying Sunday. It only sprinkled a little bit so we managed to get alot done outside.

  46. Hellooooo Crystal Chick~

Hey....thanks COOL! You saw her In AC?

Yes...she did have a husband named FANG. And your right...he was a fictional character!

And from what I heard from the producers of the show that I was in...was that she was an extremely SMART lady, and knew exactly what she was doing with her career. And from the looks of her home...she had VERY good taste in things!

YES...it only sprinkled a little here too. I spent the whole day outside, walking aroung the city with a good friend of mine. We had a wonderful time. The weather was PERFECT!

Hope you had a GREAT day yourself!

    Great seeing ya, M.

  48. Greeting Bek~

Welcome! And thank you for taking the time to comment...that's very nice of you!

YES...I had just visited Spiky's blog last night and HOWLED at her humor. I just recently discovered her blog from Giggle.

Yes...lurking does have a negative ring to it and I just wanted to voice my feelings on it. To me, a blog is there to READ and enjoy, regardless of whether someone decides to comment or not.

Thank you for your blog link...I will DEFINATELY stop by later.

Please drop by Vent anytime you wish...it's nice having you here!
