I had such a delightful experience happen to me this past weekend, that I just couldn’t resist sharing it with you.

On Friday afternoon, I purchased some of the most delicious looking whole wheat pita bread that I’d ever seen.

I usually enjoy pita with some hummus and veggies or even with some feta cheese and tomato sauce.

Yummy!

The package came with two fairly large pita pockets that were almost the size of a small pizza crust.

Later that evening I ate an entire piece with dinner, and then couldn’t wait to eat the other one with lunch the next day.

It was on the second day that I noticed several small dark areas on the bread, but because it was whole wheat and also because the bread had a sort of “kettle-style” potato chip surface, I never gave it a second thought.

So I continued to eat….

And as I was just getting ready to place the final piece into my mouth, I noticed that one of the small dark areas had FUZZ on it.

I quickly grabbed my reading glasses and examined the bread closer.

HOLY SHIT….the entire piece of pita was covered in GREEN MOLD!!

I immediately starting wondering if the first piece I’d eaten contained mold too!?!?

Suddenly, I could even finish my meal.

I kept imagining big balls of dark green fuzzy mold growing on the lining of my intestines, where it would stay there for eternity and continue to grow until it consumed every internal organ of my body.

I thought of the movie ALIEN.

(I also thought of making an appointment for a high colonic)

I finally had to stop myself from thinking about it, because it was totally weirding me out. And I actually went on the Internet and googled Bread Mold.

Oh well…I guess I learned a valuable lesson from this experience.

To READ the expiration date on the bread before I purchase it.

And the next time I eat ANYTHING…

WEAR my reading glasses!

And if by chance I should suddenly happen to succumb to “green-bread-mold-consumption”… I’m relying on you dear readers, to tell the coroners office that they can go into my blog archives, where they will find the cause...

Fucking Pita bread.

I think I have found a new diet. Shop where you shop!
There was a time when I couldn't have white or wheat products so pita was definitely out. When it was okay medically to go off that diet I turned into such a bread whore that I would consume an entire French baguette in a sitting or two. Hell, I could have half of it done on the way home in the car.
    It was bad.
Pita was never really my thing so now I think it's staying permanently off my list! I'll have the hummus (YUM!), veggies (YUMMY!), and feta (YUMMO!) on a plate, hold the mold please! LOL
Ye Gods, Ron, I hope you didn't get an upset tummy. I would have been wretching.

    OKAY, talk about that movie......
last night I was having trouble sleeping and what did I watch on t.v????
    Aliens!!!
It was the second one where they go to the colony to check on the missing members. Holy crap, I was totally engrossed even after seeing it lots of times before.
Also, I see on your sidebar you have Shirley MacLaine highlighted.
    Isn't she wonderful?!!?
My girlfriend met her at a booksigning. I have read a couple of her books and seen a few movies.
    AND....
yesterday afternoon while waiting for hubby to get home I was watching 'Steel Magnolias'. She was a riot in that as Ouiser Boudreaux. Have you seen it?

If you survive, I wish you a wonderful week filled with yummy things to eat but please please wear those glasses before buying anything!!

  2. Think free antibiotics!

    JUST sayin'.......LOL

Oh, if you could only see the colonies I tossed after two weeks of vacation!
Opened one container and didn't bother with the others...

<--now has to go shopping for new tupperware....LOL

  3. Holy Poisonous Pita Batman!

The moral of your story is sad but true. Reading glasses ain't just for reading. I almost blew up the microwave because I read the power setting wrong.

I have now taken to wearing my glasses on a chain around my neck. The sure fire sign of becoming my Mother. BUT - the chain is FABULOUS - full of shiny stones. So there time - take that!

I think the mold can't really hurt ya. Remember those science experiments in school - we all did the moldy bread. If it was dangerous they wouldn't have let us do it. Right? Right?

  4. Morning Dianne~

Oh heavens, you make me GIGGLE!

Only because I totally agree with you.

Damn...it's getting to the point, where the SECOND I get out of bed in the morning, I pop my reading glasses on. And what's REALLY bad, is that I'm finding that I need them to even watch TV!

And at WORK??? You should see me, I'm always quoting the wrong prices to customers - 6's and 8's look alike to me.

Hey...the "chain" sounds like a GREAT idea - honest!

Yes, my friend...I'm a full-time eyeglass wearer, now.

And I do remember those science experiments in school with the moldly bread!

And I think I also remember them saying that bread mold is actually good for "eyesite"

    tee, hee!

Thanks for dropping by fellow eyeglass wearer!

    Have a FABU Monday!

  5. Morning Mel~

    You're right!

And that's actually what I was thinking...

    Penicillin....Penicillin....Penicillin!

After I read online about bread mold, I realized that I would be ok. I just wish I hadn't SEEN it. You know how the mind works!?!?

Man, I've had the same thing happen to me - where you discover "colonies" of mold, like in the bead box!!

    ewwwwww...ain't it CREEPY?

It's like a box of FUZZ!

Anyway, thanks for stopping by on this Monday morning, Mel!

I bet it feels nice to be back home, hu?

    Glad your back.

  6. I am still giggling...
I've eaten bread mold, cheese mold, and ice cream that fell in the grass. I would rather not, but hey I have been that hungry!
that must have been one helluva OCD moment for you my friend...
    still smiling!

  7. Morning Cyrstal Chick~

OMG....I'm a bread whore too. Just give me a good loaf of french or italian bread with some butter, and a nice salad...and I'm in heaven!!

(some red wine would be nice too)

I've know several people who can't eat any wheat products. One guy I knew had something called Sillia (I think it's called?). He was HIGHLY allergic to anything with wheat in it. It made he very sick.

That's TOOO funny, M...how you were watching ALIENS last night!!!! Doesn't it blow you away sometimes, how people will simultaniously be "thinking" about the SAME THING??? I find it even more so with people I blog with.

Thank you for noticing the new "Favorite Star" on the sidebar.

This past weekend I watched "Evening Star" with Shirley Maclaine - it's the sequel to "Terms of Endearment." I actually like it MUCH better than the first one. I don't enjoy watching Debra Winger (she really irritates me), so "Terms" was not a favorite of mine. "Evening Star" is more of a blend of drama and comedy, and I just enjoyed it more. Anyway...it got me thinking about how much I love Shirley, not only as an actress...but for her openess in sharing her beliefs. I've always liked her!

And "Steel Magnolias" is such a wonderful film, isn't it?? I've seen it performed on stage too, but in the theatrical production there are no men in the cast. It's all-female. I enjoy both interpretations.

Anway, M....thank you for sharing. It's always fun talking to ya!

Have a great Monday, and great week!

  8. Morning Lady Sorrow!!!

    So GRAND to see ya!!

    YAAAAAAY!

Hey, if you can believe this...I TOO have actually eaten stuff that fell on the floor. At work, they think I'm gross, cause I'll eat a lifesaver candy if I accidentally drop it.
I mean for GOD SAKE PEOPLE...it's my LAST one...and my breath stinks!

You gotta do, what you gotta do!

    GREAT seeing ya, Sorrow!

Hope you're having a wonderful summer!

  11. Howdy Rhea~

    I KNOW....isn't the photo DISGUSTING??

Honestly, the mold on the pita was not THAT bad.

    (you know me, DRAMA QUEEEN)

But it FELT like it was THAT bad. Especially after eating the whole package!

Listen, if my skin starts turning GREEN, I'll take some photos and do a post on it. This way they'll be more evidence for the coroner, ya know?

    tee, hee!

Anyway, thanks for stopping by for a read, Rhea!

And thank you for feeling sorry for me...

    BOO...HOO!

  12. HAYHOOO Casdok!

I ALWAYS love being surprised when you stop by!!

    GREAT seeing ya!

Hey, listen...I was about 45 years old when I started wearing reading glasses. I too was in denial (so I know what you mean). I would actually go to the bookstore and hide in a corner, while I read with my glasses on, so I could get use to wearing them.

NOW...I need them to see everything!

Partially from just age, and partially from this damn computer screen. I need to purchase one of those screen covers that cuts down on the glare.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, dear lady.

I'll be by your place later this evening to see what you posted today.

    Can't wait.

  13. Think of it as organic penicillin and that you've actually protected yourself against some horrid disease!

It's better than taking a bite and finding 1/2 a cockroach, right? ;)

  14. Oh, my good Lord. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, I hear. Or it can at least make you a candidate for a good stomach pumping. I shall never eat a piece of bread again that hasn't been inspected first by someone with better eyesight than me. YUCK!

  15. Evening Miss Nytebyrd!

Hey....that's a WONDERFUL way to look at it!

It probably prevented me from getting the flu!

And can you even imagine finding a 1/2 a cockroach????

Dear god, I don't even want to think about it!

    Great seeing ya, dearest lady!

    Thanks for dropping by!

I'm telling you...make sure you inspect that bread with a binoculars!

    GREAT seeing ya, Kathy.

Much thanks for stopping by for a little bread mold!

  17. ron...eeeewwwwww!

Youwill like this story...I tell everybody about my friend Byron. I was in his office and we were talking business stuff...he would ask questions and I would show him how he computer systems worked with his systems...etc. Anyway he has pizza box in his trash can...yes, in the middle of our meeting...he has his feet up on the desk and he reaches in and takes the box out and pulls a pizza piece out. He sniffs it and looks it over and then takes a bite. I looked at him amazed...are you trying to make me sick? No, he just forgot to bring lunch. he was glad the cleaning guy hadn't emptied it. He ate two more pieces...and it was pizza from the day before. BARF!

How do you feel ron...a little green still? hehehehe

Ciao babes...You are so crazy. hehehe...a good crazy though. ;D

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment!

Isn't it the BEST feeling to get to the end of your bread eating, and then spot the mold???

    YUCK!

And I can see how with an English muffin it would be very difficult to notice.

    Oy vey!

Yes, I'm fine. Thanks for asking. I haven't died yet.

    Ha!

Nice meeting you, Adventurer. Please stop back anytime.

Don't feel too bad, though... Here in France...people eat moldy cheese... both blue AND ROCQUEFORT... Should I save some moldy bread for them to go with their moldy cheese.....
Take care and be real careful next time to examine the date and your food thoroughly!!!

  30. Bonjour Leesa!!!

OMG...this is the post that reminded me of the post that YOU wrote a while back on your blog, do you remember?

I think you wrote about moldy bread too!?!?

And YES!!!! It TOTALLY freaked me out after I had eaten both pieces and realized about the mold!!! I actually had to stop myself from thinking about it, because it was really making me sick.

    YUCK!!!

From that moment on...I made SURE to read the expiration date AND examine the bread!

ooooh yes...and cheese is another thing TOO, because I eat a lot of it!

    Thanks for stopping by, Leesa!
