Post updates by email:
Today I would like to share how I spent my Saturday evening until 3am. And my Sunday afternoon until 3pm.

For those of you who run Vista on your computer, will surely be able to identify with this post.

And for those of you who don‘t…YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU‘RE MISSING.

Having Vista as your software, is worse than being punished by the IRS for two years of tax evasion and finding out that you owe them an additional three thousand dollars in penalty fees.

It’s a nightmare, because it seems that the longer you have Vista, the worse it gets.

It’s strange, because my computer will run smoothing for a week or so, and then suddenly becomes possessed by what seems like Damien in the movie The Omen.

Updates are CONSTANT. And after every single installation my entire computer system becomes schizophrenic, which usually takes at least 3-4 days for everything to return to normal.

I know that part of my issue with how slow Vista runs, is that I need to get more memory. But that still doesn’t excuse how it screws up other things on my computer, such as, the clock, virus protection, keyboard, and word processor.

Anyway…

Saturday evening at about 11:30pm, as I was getting ready to go off-line, I noticed a message for new updates. And like an idiot, instead of waiting to do it in the morning, I thought I’d get it over with.

There were TWO updates.

One was for spyware and the other was for the new Internet Explorer 8.

The message said that the IE 8 update was HIGHLY recommended, so I went ahead and downloaded it.

HUUUUUUUGE mistake.

First, let me tell you how LONG it took.

Let’s just say that if I were a female cat, I could have gone through 9 ½ weeks of gestation and then 24 hours of hard labor, while giving birth to EIGHT kittens.

After the download…it took another 35 minutes to install.

THEN…I had to restart my computer, which took another 20 minutes to conform the installation.

By the time it had finished, I had watched 6 DVD episodes of Sex and the City.

At 3am...I went to bed.

When I awoke on Sunday morning, I immediately went online to check out my new Internet Explorer 8.

Well…much to my surprise, when I got to my home page there were two added toolbars (I detest toolbars), which made my nice 20 inch monitor look like 5 inches. I also noticed that my phishing security system was no longer working. And to make matters worse, browsing the web was excruciatingly SLOW.

So, I started googling the Internet to try and find out if other people were having any issues.

Come to find out, that IE 8 was NOT so compatible with Vista and that it was causing several people’s computers to CRASH.

SHIT!

Luckily, the Microsoft website explained how to uninstall the update.

And thank god uninstalling was so much less painful.

Because believe me…

…I live on the 21st floor of a high rise apartment building….

  1. That's strange...I had Vista on the old (14" Extensa) and didn't have a problem. But then again, that thing was probably more than I needed anyway. I probably wasn't using it enough (and only had it for about a year) for it to go haywire.

  2. Hi Ron,

I don't have Vista with this laptop, so I don't know all about those joys.
    Not exactly user friendly !

I can relate with the updates that we have against viruses & phishing. But, I think that's taken care of daily on an automatic basis.Which is dandy.

Yes, no one said that computers would be easy !!
You take it easy my dear and big hugs to ya !

  3. The laptop visited the girl yesterday. It was happy to see her. I was happy to bring it. It meant she fixed whatever was messin' with my morning routine and I played with the wee bug. :-)

    WORKED!

Now--so far me and Mr. Computer are getting along very well this morning.

I do not reside on the 21st floor.
I do, however, possess a sledge hammer.

  4. Another Vista owner! Thank you for being there for this, too! I share the same burdens as you, my friend. What a pain this is. Great picture to go along with your post, as well. So many updates with this little monster - so little time!

    Best to you this weekend.

  6. Aloha Debi!

I've heard other users say the same thing.

It seems that people either have NO problems, or MANY problems.

    I unfortunately, am the latter.

I've had Vista for over two years, so I think when I get more memory, it may speed things up a bit, but it's the updates that drive me crazy!?#*

    PRAY for me!

    tee, hee!

    Thanks for stopping by, Deb!

    Happy Memorial Day!

You said it....no one said that computers would be easy, but this is INSANITY!?#!

It feels like I'm part of some Vista Experimental Project.

Before Vista, I had Windows 98 and I LOOOOOVED it! I had a computer guy once tell me that 98 was perhaps the best software ever made.

    Oh well...get over it, Ron!

    hahahahahaha!

    Thanks for stopping by, Barb!

Wishing you and Didier a wonderful day!

  13. No Vista for me. My new mini came with Windows XP - THANK GODS! I've heard the horror of Vista and not being a very techy person, I didn't want to have any more stress generators in my life.

At least you got rid of one part that was causing trouble without too much drama!

  14. I so feel your pain on that. I have been there so many times. Two things: One use Firefox. It's the bomb. Two Upgrade to Windows 7 RC. I did two weeks ago and the problems I use to have with VISTA are gone. It might be RC and you take your chances but I cannot believe the difference. It's running like a champ. Watch your antivirus program as well if you do this. I have links to what works with Windows 7. I HATE VISTA

    How funny!

Hey listen, I have my eye on a Mac and I can't wait until I can purchase it! Everyone who owns one RAVES about them. I'm at a point in my Internet life when I really NEED to get one. I know they're SUPER for people who are interested in web design and since I'm teaching myself more and more, I think it's time!!!

    Great seeing ya, dear lady!

  18. Howdy Thom!

Thank you SOOOOOOOO much for your suggestions!!

I keep hearing from several people that Firefox is so much better than IE. The only thing I was afraid of, was that it wouldn't be compatible with Vista!

Listen, I may contact you via email if I have any questions, ok?

Thanks again for your great suggestions, bud!

    You're the BOMB!

    Happy Memorial Day to ya!

  22. Hey Dianne!

YOU WERE SOOO SMART TO REFUSE VISTA!!!

I got my computer two years ago, and trying to find one with XP was impossible. Now, for some reason....I see that quite a few laptops are offering it!

    YEPEEE!

Yes, in between my VISTA shit...I did find some time for fun (and some WINE).

GOSH...isn't today's temp wonderful?? I just got in from the park, it was great!

Thank so much for dropping by, Dianne!

  23. Helloooo Lady in Red!

Hey, that's right!!! I remember when you were inquiring about a laptop on your blog last year. I think you said you got an Acer!?

I know that Acer is reviewed as a VERY good computer, it's just that VISTA seems to screw up ALL computers. I've got an HP (which I LOVE) but even that gets screwed up!?*

    OY VEY...whatta' ya gonna do???

    Thanks for dropping by, Lady!

I'll think of you the next time a get an UPDATE!!!

    Enjoy your day!

  24. When I got the new computer a few months ago, it came with Vista. I had heard the horror stories. One being that I wouldn't be able to run older programs because it wouldn't accept them and I'd have to buy new. I figured that since the old monster Photoshop program I had I never really learned to use anyway, I'd just buy their Elements version for alot less money. And I was planning to upgrade my astrology software at some point anyway.
    So....
    things seemed to be okay....
and now for awhile the screen is freezing and the only option is to go to Task Manager and close the program which basically shuts everything down and I have to log on again and open all that I was working on.
I don't know if that is a glitch of Vista or if it is something to do with my online service at Verizon. It's been happening fairly often but I just haven't looked into yet.

Sorry to hear you are having so many problems. Technology definitely has it's advantages, but there are certainly downfalls too.
Maybe the upgrade in memory will help.

Hope you are having a very enjoyable holiday weekend otherwise. The City must have been quieter with people coming to Jersey for time at the shore.
Hubby had to work the weekend but had off today so after he took a ride on his bike we went t.v. shopping.

  25. Hey Ron - If you lived closer to Redmond, Washington, you might’ve scored a chance of having that PC flatten Bill Gates after its plunge. At very least, perhaps you crushed a Microsoft help-desk techie, thus (strongly) making your point against Vista.

Thank you for not attempting a tandem drop with your PC. I do enjoy visiting here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hiya Crystal Chick!

OMG...I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU JUST SHARED THAT!!!

    Me TOO!

I'm having the same DAMN THING happen to me about the screen freezing. I happens at least once a day and I end up closing and then restarting. I don't think it's our internet providers, either. It's WICKED VISTA!!

Fortunately for me, when I got my new computer, my printer was Vista compatible, but I DID have to purchase a new keyboard and mouse, because they wouldn't comply. For the first 6 months, I was on the phone every week talking to Vista to help me with several issues.

Oh well, like I shared with Linda...one of these days I'm investing in a Mac!

Yes, the city was so nice and quiet today, you could hear a pin drop!

ooooh...and new TV? How fun!!! I bet the sales were fabulous today!!!

    Thanks for stopping, M!

    Happy Memorial Day!

Tonight, I've got a movie I want to watch with a nice glass of wine!

  27. Hey MVD!

    oooh....what freakin' FAAAABULOUS idea!!!

And funny you mentioned a Microsoft help-desk techie, because when I first got Vista; every time I called for help, not one of them spoke English. I got so mad one time, that I hung up on them!

    (I can be a BITCH)

    Anyway...

    Thanks for stopping by, bud!

    You always make me laugh!

Hope you had a great Memorial Day!

    Sincerely,
    Vista Hater
