Your Office is Open

When I was kid there was a saying my father would always use on us boys, whenever we forgot to zip up our pant fly.

He would say, “Your office is open.”

And OH. MY. GOD…..that would embarrass the hell out of us, because to think we were walking around with our zipper open was like SO risqué .

Which makes me laugh, considering how many young people nowadays (guys AND girls), I see walking around with their pants hanging so low you can actually see their underwear. And sometimes the crack of their butt. It’s like they can’t quite decide if they want their pants on or off, so they just wear them halfway between. Which always looks as though they’re getting ready to fall off because they just had an sudden bowel explosion. I honestly don’t know how they do it. I mean do they use Velcro or Stitch Witchery to hold their pants in place? And how do they walk?

I realize this “look” represents a current hip-hop fashion trend, but to me it looks like a fashion FELONY.

I’m trying to imagine fashion icon, Coco Chanel, walking around like this today. I know she was the first clothing designer to create a more loose-fitting style for the women of her day, but I wonder how she would feel about clothes fitting THIS loose…

The sight of this truly irritates me beyond measure. It irritates me as much as wire hangers irritated Joan Crawford.

I want to scream, “NO PANTS HANGING BELOW YOUR ASS…..EVER!!!”

Such as it was the other day, while taking a quick coffee break at Starbucks. I noticed a 20ish something guy getting up from the table to leave, when all of a sudden I saw “it”….

….his pants hanging down below his plaid boxer shorts.

And no, I didn’t scream anything at him. But I wanted too, trust me.

Instead I thought, “Do you know how ridiculous you look? How embarrassing.”

Later that afternoon while I was walking out of the post office, I just so happen to look down at the front of my own pants.

And lo and behold.

My office was WIDE open……

And I thought, “Do you know how ridiculous you look? How embarrassing.”

Don't forget to check your fly's this weekend everyone!

  1. Heh...hilarious!

I used to ask people, "Are you afraid of heights?"

    "No," they'd answer.

    "Well, your zipper is."

I know. Weak. But that's the beat I could muster in Jr. High.

  2. Hey Ron!!

"Fashion felony" is RIGHT!! This fashion actually started in PRISON b/c the inmates weren't allowed to wear belts-- If I'm not mistaken (I'd have to look it up, though) - it was the latino population that started it.. (I could be wrong- but someone once told me this).. As I taught high school for 5 years... I got 'used to' this fashion.. but I think we had a rule where the kids couldn't show their boxers... so they'd just wear long shirts but their pants were still sagging down..
We call it - Saggy pants... Hmmm.. This fashion trend really hit the youth of Paris, and I see it EVERYWHERE and it makes we want to go up to these youngins' and give them a wedgey or something!! Seriously.... Makes me SCREAM, too!!

    Also, keep your office CLOSED!!!!

    Hugs from the German countryside!

  3. Not exactly 'flattering', huh?
I'm not keen on the saggin' look either--but thankfully I don't have to dress like that! *whew*
I do have an automatic thought process of "PULL UP YOUR PANTS" that happens. If I wanted to see underwear, I'd check the top drawer in the bedroom! Eeeekkk!!

Heaven help me if the 'office open' look becomes the 'in' thing.
I get unglued if my bra strap is showing. LOL (YES I WEAR ONE.....sheeeeeshhhh)

  4. I'm not usually so critical of the dress sense of the younger generation but seeing a guy with his pants neither up nor down sickens me. It's insensitive, sloppy, scruffy, slovernly, and in bad taste. It's good to meet someone who disapproves of this fashion as much as me. Hmmm I'd rather see the office open, at least the imagination can alight on something worthwhile.

  5. I agree, very ridiculous! My kids tried to start the fashion around our house and was met with both my wife and myself pulling their pants down every time they were within reach.

Their statement didn't last long! At least at home...

Also this seems to go hand in hand with the crooked hat thing which drives me equally crazy!

Yes....you're absolutely right, it did start in prison. I actually just learned that on wikipedia. If you click on the link it should take you the article. I found it fascinating.

"As I taught high school for 5 years... I got 'used to' this fashion.. but I think we had a rule where the kids couldn't show their boxers..."

Yeah, I bet being a teacher you've seen this A LOT. Philly, being such a college town, we see it here a lot too.

" I see it EVERYWHERE and it makes we want to go up to these youngins' and give them a wedgey or something!!"

  13. um, Office? such an official name. perhaps even distinguished sounding.

I am mildly tormented by the sight of pants that don't fit either, but at the risk of being one of those grouchy old ladies that don't understand youngsters, I just keep my mouth shut. But it is so not an attractive look.

In all honestly, I'd REALLY love to walk over and give a gentle tug to the loose pants. But my life might be over after that episode, so I probably won't.

I am rather sure I had an open office episode myself, perhaps last winter. Skirt. Zipper in the back. Don't recall the particulars, but I did notice it was a bit drafty as I was filling my coffee cup in the office kitchen. Not sure if I shared the love with any of my colleagues...sure hope not.

    :) enjoy your weekend!!

  14. I am in complete agreement with you on this subject. My daughter's ex use to wear his pants this way and i always wondered how the belt held the pants perfectly at the low point of the hops. It is a wonder. I suppose this truly marks us as an older generation..I have come to this conclusion. but I still don't get some of the new trends...tattoos all over, piercing in places I won't mention and so on. I guess I am old-fashioned in this way!!!

"Don't recall the particulars, but I did notice it was a bit drafty as I was filling my coffee cup in the office kitchen."

Too funny! And that's how I discovered my own open office the other day. I felt a breeze blowing between my legs - HA!

and i meant that more in a "you're sweet" not "you're fuzzy" kinda way.

i really don't know if it's worse for a guy's fly to be down, or a girls. we kind of expect guy's to be down - but not the other way around. cus man, sometimes i get sidetracked trying to squeeze myself into something and once i'm done finally buttoning, i forget about the other half of the job.

p.s. you need to add the name/url option to commenting. i don't fit in any of these categories cus i'm self hosted ='( and have to sign in with an outdated google email.

  28. Hey Ron, I am with you 100% on this one Buddy, there is no excuse whether a fashion statement or not to wear your pants hanging low like this.

I used to make the joke that the reason they did this was to keep the flies out of their faces :)

One of the boys attempted to "Sag" as they called it for a while and we had warned him to keep his pants pulled up, we were on our way into Walmart when Cindy warned him once again to pull them up which he did and upon entering the store he pulled them down to show his drawers as we used to say, well she quietly walked up behind him and grabbed the side of his pant legs pulling them all the way to the floor and walked around leaving him standing there in the middle of the store showing everything.

He yelled Mom and she replied, I thought I told you to pull your pants up, we had no more sagging problems after this one :)

  41. Whenever I see some kid with his or her knickers showing, I want to start slapping him or her. It quite literally makes no sense whatsoever. This is why these things are called underwear. They are supposed to not be seen. I think it is actually worse than when girls wear hip huggers and have their thongs sticking out the back. Ticky tacky, as my mother would say.
