I know it’s a bit early to be posting about Easter, but while standing in line at the drug store a few weeks back, I couldn't help but notice an isle that was already jammed packed with Easter baskets, bunny ears, egg dying kits, and of course…..Easter candy.

I have such fond childhood memories of Easter in the Carnavil family. My mother would always take us kids to Strawbridge’s department store to purchase a new Easter outfit to wear to church, which included a suit and tie, shoes, and a spiffy hat. She also made sure we each got our own Easter basket filled with green plastic straw and lots of sweet goodies.

One of our family traditions was dying hardboiled eggs with one of these Paas egg dying kits. *notice the price

I can still remember sitting around the kitchen table, writing our names on the eggs with a crayon and then dipping them into the various small bowls which contained water, vinegar, and egg dye. By the time we were finished, our hands and faces were covered in dye.

My mother always made sure we each had a large chocolate, coconut cream egg in the center of our Easter baskets which she would purchase from a special candy store. OMG…these eggs were so fresh and creamy that when you cut into one with a knife, the coconut would literally OOZE out of the egg. The taste was unbelievably sinful.

Surrounding the egg, my mother would place various other candies inside each one of our baskets; filling them to capacity.

It’s no wonder my teeth have five silver fillings, four crowns, and bridge.

My mouth looks like a poster that should be hanging in a dentists office with a caption that reads, SEE WHAT CANDY DOES TO YOUR TEETH?

Anyhoo, today I would like to share not only a few of my favorite Easter candies, but also one that’s my least favorite. I'll get to that last.

I could eat Cadbury Creme Eggs all year round. For me, whenever I eat a Cadbury egg it feels as though I should be listening to Donna Summer singing, Love to Love You Baby. The experience is positively orgasmic. I need a cigarette afterward.

I like to put two of these Malted Milk Eggs in my mouth at one time while sucking off the outside coating and then slowly biting into the malted center. When I was a kid, I use to enjoy rubbing the colored coating all over my lips and then looking at myself in the mirror because it appeared as though I was wearing lipstick. Gee…I wonder if that was any indication I was GAY???

I love jelly beans more than my own life. Especially Jelly Belly jelly beans. Once I start eating them I can’t stop. I love all the various colors and tastes, however these are my favorite…...

Yes, I know. Most people (with the exception of Chrissy) HATE black jelly beans. And most people think they look like little bunny turds. Which they do. But I’m sorry…black jelly beans to me are the greatest invention other than the laptop computer.

Finally, we have my least favorite Easter candy…..Peeps.

I’ve written several posts throughout the years, expressing my utter disdain and contempt for these retched little marshmallow heathens. First of all, I abhor marshmallow. Second, even though I love sweets, a Peep tastes like I’m biting into a 10lb. bag of sugar. Let’s just put it this way, if I were given the choice of either eating a Peep or starving to death, I would quickly choose death.

Oh, and look what I found online while googling Peeps…...

Peep lip balm!?!? I would sooner have my lips crack off and fall on the floor from extreme dryness, than use a Peep flavored lip balm.

Yes. As you can tell, I LOVE Peeps.....

  1. Ron, we must have been raised in the same house. Everything you described is pretty much how I remember Easter in our home. Including our current dental health. LOL

  2. I buy MWM two Cadbury Creme Eggs every week, at this time of year, and get him a packet of the mini eggs occasionally too. He loves them both, so we have to stock up whilst they're on sale. He is a total chocoholic and has stashes all over the house! I don't have a sweet tooth, which is lucky as I'm diabetic but MWM more than makes up for my lack of enthusiasm about chocolate. :)

Well, technically I do--I buy 'upchuck chickies' every year for entertainment purposes. I send them to my sister--with evil things done to them. Last year it was 'voodoo upchuck chickies'........you get the idea, I'm sure.

Cracking up here, Ron. Thank goodness I never tried any vile Peeps. Never heard of it, come to that. But I have heard of Cadbury's chocolate and cream eggs - they're made just up the road from me. Oh and jelly beans, I simply adore them (never tried the black) but hey, have you seen how much they cost these days>

I am quite jealous of your childhood... and I LOVE your Mom. I was an only child but my Mom had no idea how to indulge me with fine chocolate or even to have a stab at painting eggs. Made up for it since though, I got fed-up of feeling deprived...grins. Have a wonderful week.

  5. For me, Easter is a way to buy cheap candy on wholesale - and send them overseas where Easter is not celebrated (with eggs and chocolates) - readvertising them as 'a thoughtful and unexpected parcel from Uncle Jaffer in Canada'

Peeps must be big in Pennsylvania. I have never heard of Peeps until I joined the Blogosphere.

I know too many Bloggers from Pennsylvania - from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and Tioga Country to Lehigh County.

I feel qualified enough to give a tour - even if I have never set foot in Pennsylvania !

  11. Good Morning Valerie~

"Thank goodness I never tried any vile Peeps. Never heard of it, come to that."

Oh that's right, I remember posting about Peeps last year and one of my UK blogging buddies shared the same thing. I wonder if Peeps are only in the U.S.? Trust me, you're NOT missing anything - they're so GROSS!

"But I have heard of Cadbury's chocolate and cream eggs - they're made just up the road from me. Oh and jelly beans, I simply adore them (never tried the black) but hey, have you seen how much they cost these days."

Yup! I'm pretty sure Candbury originated in the UK! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay UK!!!!!

Aren't jelly beans the bomb? Not everyone likes black jelly beans. You have to like licorice, and brother do I!

My mother and father were like kids themselves, so they really enjoyed indulging us during the holiday. I feel very blessed to have had the childhood I had. My mother is still alive and living in Florida. My father passed away about 16 years ago.

Thank you so much for dropping by, dear lady! Always a delight! Have glorious week!

I think you're right. I think Peeps are big in the U.S., but not so much anywhere else. I know they're not known in the UK.

But trust me, you're not missing anything because they are BEYOND gross. Cute to look at, but you don't want to ever eat one. They make them for every holiday season now!

Too funny! Come to think of it, I know quite a bit of PA bloggers myself. I also blog with a lot of people from Europe, mainly the UK and France.

Hey, if you every come to Philly, perhaps you could me ME a tour. You probably know more about the state of PA than I do - HA!

Your memories are basically my memories....the special outfits, hat, and getting a special chocolate egg from a real candy store in my basket. I always received coconut (my fave) and my brother always got a peanut butter one.

Isn't it fun to combine a few of the Jelly Bellys in your mouth at once to try to get a new flavor combo?:

Yes, we got our Easter outfits. Wasn't that fun? In those days, even kids wore hats!

"Isn't it fun to combine a few of the Jelly Bellys in your mouth at once to try to get a new flavor combo?"

Yes! Yes! Yes! Especially with Jelly Belly jelly beans. I love to combined watermelon with cantaloupe. It's like eating a fruit salad!

  20. oh yeah, Easter candy is crowning glory of holidays in the candy aisle. There is a bowl of cadbury eggs in the house now. There would be a bowls of M&M eggs too, but I ate them all. ... I'm too lazy to dye actual eggs now, but I do remember, like you, dipping boiled eggs into bowls of dye when we were kids. Oh, you can have my black jelly beans if you like. None for me please.

  21. All of your favourite sweets I adore too! I have at least one Cadbury cream egg at Easter. Who am I kidding - usually three or four!

When we were kids, my mum bought us all a sugar egg one Easter. They were beautiful large eggs, made from crystallized sugar, and decorated in pretty coloured icing sugar. Teeth were not given a second thought in those days. Needless to say we all have plenty of bridgework and fillings ;)

  22. Actual "candy store" handmade chocolate is like ambrosia. Your mom took good care of you to make sure y'all to get you something like that.

I'm right there with you on the Cadbury eggs and black jelly beans. I don't even bother with the other, just buy the all black bag. But I gotta tell you I just love a stale Peep. Poke holes in the wrapper and leave 'em out for a month or so, delicious! Still haven't found those chocolate Peeps, though.

  23. I LOVE your description of peeps as retched little marshmallow heathens. They so are! Hollywood could release a movie, Attack of the Killer Peeps, and I might buy a ticket...and then have nightmares for eternity.

  24. Ahhhhh... this post reminds me that I have to look for a particular picture of me many years ago at Eastertime. I might have even posted it, or one of my sister and I. Anyway, must find it.
Since our kids are grown, I don't do up baskets anymore. I'll maybe buy a few goodies for our son, who is still at home, at a local candy shop that makes all their creations on site! Maybe get a few treats for the grands.

I adore chocolate but don't much like it cream filled. Can't do peanut butter anymore. Definitely despise black licorice. NO to malt. And don't get into Peeps AT ALL, altho my daughter loves them. Jelly beans are okay. I prefer the specialty type like maybe Starburst? I love mint chocolate and orange chocolate...Lindt...Mmmm... the ones that come in big bars. And also their truffles... heaven!
Dark chocolate anything is definitely delish!

Nice trip down memory lane. Glad you had such great times.
    Have a great week. :)

    Tee, hee! Aren't I EVIL?

Peeps are marshmallows shaped into little chicks that are coated in pure sugar. OMG, they are sooooooooo overly sweet!!

"n i'm so interested in the black jelly beans! we had the colorful ones here, not sure if it is "jelly belly" jelly beans, but i love those."

I LOVE black jelly beans, but you have to like the flavor of black licorice because that's what they taste like. Jelly Belly jelly beans are smaller than your average jelly bean. They are sooooooo good!

Malted Milk Eggs. You, sir, are a horrible influence. I now know what I'm picking up from the store tomorrow during lunch!

  43. Hey there buddy,

Thank you for a light and fluffy post :) We all need freshness and cheer.
I remember well how you oooozed at the sight, smell and taste of chocolate! We have enjoyed that trait in person & on your blog( the ole timers will recall the chocolate O).

Give me a shake, pardner; I am the same. Now I know that this taste goes back to a earlier and more innocent time of life. I also carry fillings to this day. Its really weird; my US made fillings have not dropped out & D has had to replace several of his childhood ones.
US Made goes the distance!! (LOL)

I had almost all of the same rituals, including egge coloring.Mom would think nothing after Easter of taking these hard boiled eggs and eating them!! It would freak us out to see the colored yolks & whites...

As for peeps, my house never bought them. How strange how traditions go in some families & not others.

Have a great day & big hugs xox

"I remember well how you oooozed at the sight, smell and taste of chocolate!"

Tee, hee....aren't I something when it comes to CHOCOLATE? It's my favorite aphrodisiac - HA!

"Its really weird; my US made fillings have not dropped out & D has had to replace several of his childhood ones.
US Made goes the distance!! (LOL)"

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHA! That's so funny, Barb! Come to think of it, none of my fillings have ever dropped out either.

    You GO, US!!!!!

"Mom would think nothing after Easter of taking these hard boiled eggs and eating them!! It would freak us out to see the colored yolks & whites..."

OMG, that's right! I forgot about that. Sometimes the coloring would get INSIDE the egg through a crack and stain the yolks and whites. Ewwwwwwwwwwww!

"As for peeps, my house never bought them. How strange how traditions go in some families & not others."

Trust me, you weren't missing a thing. Peeps are creepy - tee, hee!

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend! ALWAYS fab to see ya! Hope all is well.

  45. I hate Peeps too
they are asbestos and volcanic ash coated with sugar and dyed yellow

Love Cadbury eggs and the selection of fillings just keeps growing and growing

Your Easter memeories are wonderful :)
I loved coloring eggs with my son
One year he and all his friends got carried away and we ended up coloring everything including ourselves

  46. Oh, gosh, the memories this post brings back. We all used to sit around the kitchen table dying Easter eggs when we were kids, and then we got our baskets with the chocolate bunnies--start with the ears!--and chocolate eggs. My mother, God rest her, was making us Easter baskets when we were all well into adulthood. And btw, love the Cadbury description: "I need a cigarette afterward!" Exactly!!!

Bwhahahahahahahahahahhaa! OMG, Dianne....that was FLAWLESS! That totally CRACKED ME UP!!!

Oh I know... every year they keep coming out with a new Cadbury egg filling. But for me, the original is my fav. Plain old egg yolk.

Yes! Yes! The ears ALWAYS had to be eaten first, you're soooooooo right! The only thing I didn't eat were the eyes - HA!

"My mother, God rest her, was making us Easter baskets when we were all well into adulthood."

Oh, God bless her, Rob! She sounded like a WONDERFUL mother.

Much thanks for stopping by, buddy! Always great to read your comments. Have a terrrrific Tuesday!

  49. Ron, what a great description of the candy you love and hate for Easter !!
It brings back fonsd memories. We could not afford candy for the kids when I was a youngster. My mother would make Easter Toast. She always made it with Jewish Rye. Boy did she have sense of humor. Then she would draw pictures of Easter eggs on them with her permanet magic markers. The one of the eggs dropping out of the Bunny's ass was always a family favorite. Then she would go to the drug store and when no one was looking she would cut pictures of candy out of magazines and bring them home. She did not make us Easter baskets; she would put the pictures and the burnt toast inside Granpa's wooden leg and when he walked we could hear the items move around inside the leg. At that point we would attack the poor old bastard and rip off his leg. We would dig into the hollow parth of his limb and fight for the goodies.
Ah I can still taste that wonderful taste of burnt bread and newsprint.
    Now that was Easter

  51. You need a cigarette afterwards? Hahahahahahaha!!

You know, I've heard so many people say they hate Peeps. I'm not sure I've ever seen one, but by the description I don't care if I never do. Many people have commented that they are 'creepy', too. And yes, I'm sure dentists hate them.

My memories of Easter are also very fond. We would have a huge boxed chocolate egg each. The eggs were hollow, with a little bag full of chocolates with various fillings inside and here's the interesting thing; the chocolate was nothing like any other chocolate you could buy for the rest of the year. It tasted wonderful, different, addictive! The closest I've tasted since is cooking chocolate, but it's not it. It isn't the same.

Perhaps the chocolate they were making in those (*ahem*) far-off days didn't lend itself to making a thin chocolate 'egg shell'? Who knows. But I've never found anything like it since.

    Still love chocolate though!

    PS - You're gay? No!!!

"I'm not sure I've ever seen one, but by the description I don't care if I never do. Many people have commented that they are 'creepy', too. And yes, I'm sure dentists hate them."

Trust me, you're NOT missing anything. Imagine a marshmallow covered in a bag of yellow-dyed sugar. We (here in the States) now how them for EVERY holiday. You haven't lived until you've seen a pumkin or witch Peep - Boo!

"The eggs were hollow, with a little bag full of chocolates with various fillings inside and here's the interesting thing; the chocolate was nothing like any other chocolate you could buy for the rest of the year. It tasted wonderful, different, addictive!"

Yes! Yes! I've seen those, Jay!

And you are sooooooooo right...there is nothing like the chocolate you got back then (*ahem*) in those far-off days. Perhaps is has something to do with the ingredients they used. Maybe better quality?

Me too....me loves me LOTS of chocolate!

    "PS - You're gay? No!!!"

    I know...shocking, isn't it?

    Bwhahahhahahahaha!

ALWAYS such a delight to read your comments, dear lady! Thank you so much for stopping by!

  53. Wow, you are the comment king on this one. I think Easter candy strikes a chord with people. My mother was so great about always creating a basket for us. Even in high school she would put one outside my door. It was usually a See's basket. I love chocolate more than almost anything. Must agree with you on the Peeps. They look disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hey Jen~

"It was usually a See's basket."

OMG....I LOOOOOOOOOVE See's candy! We use to carry it in the store I work at, but they discontinued it a few years ago. I absolutely adored their carmel lollipops!

"My mother was so great about always creating a basket for us. Even in high school she would put one outside my door."

    *clapping*

How wonderful, Jen! Aren't the family memories of the holidays the BEST???

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Always great to see ya! Hope you're having a wonderful week.

  55. Hiya Ron!

Wow! I think we both lived in a parallel Easter world together! Hey... All those really 'traditional' Easter candies- Peeps, malted milk ball Easter eggs, Cadbury eggs, choc. bunnies, foil covered choc. eggs, etc.. All those things that made growing up with Easter very fun and yummy- They all still live on today, but on so much more of an advanced level- Jut take PEEPS- for example- peeps are in different shapes for all holidays and all diff. colours, too.. Whoooo hoooo... My FAVVVV- malted milk ball eggs and Cadbury eggs.... YUM YUM!!

We used to dye eggs before easter and then on Easter we'd do an choc. egg hunt in our backyard or go to some park where they put one on for the kids... I also remember getting all dressed up for Easter and mom giving us all tons of candy in our baskets- We go to Thrifty's drug store and pick out a basket and then Mom would fill it over night for Easter morning- almost like the way they would fill our Christmas stocking! Waking up on Easter morning was always a HUGE treat!!
I'm glad you and your family had such wonderful traditions- for me it's keep Easter alive - and I love to dye eggs every year, still.. Something they don't do in France, but I've imported the tradition, so YAYYYY!!!

Hugs to you and take care,
    Leesa

    I agree....'traditional!'

"We used to dye eggs before easter and then on Easter we'd do an choc. egg hunt in our backyard or go to some park where they put one on for the kids..."

Yes, we did that too! And the funny thing was that sometimes my parents would forget where they hid the eggs and then we'd find them TWO months later under a bush....all rotten - HA!

Much thanks for stopping by and sharing in the tradition! Hope you're having a great Thursday!

  57. "I use to enjoy rubbing the colored coating all over my lips and then looking at myself in the mirror because it appeared as though I was wearing lipstick. Gee…I wonder if that was any indication I was GAY???" Ha Ha Ron, I can't say I ever did this but yet I can bet this just may have been a sign, nevermind about your Moms heels and scarves that part was just part of dress up..Right?

Peeps I hate also my friend and black jelly beans are the only ones they should make in my opinion as I do love them too.

Loved stopping by for an excellent read my Good Friend.
