Perhaps some of you may not know who the hell I’m talking about in this post, because Marsha Mason is one of the most underrated and unused actresses in Hollywood.

And it’s a damn shame….because she’s freakin’ faaaaaaaaaabulous!

I first fell in love with her talent back in the late 70’s, when she starred with Richard Dreyfuss in the movie The Goodbye Girl. If you’ve never seen the film, please rent it because it’s a charming love story that’s also a very funny comedy. I actually own it, along with several of her other films.

My own personal favorite is, Only When I Laugh.

I believe the brilliance in Marsha Mason’s acting comes from the fact that she simply throws herself into a role. And becomes.

She can do comedy as well as drama. And well.

I followed her career for ages, and then she suddenly disappeared. I later discovered that she moved away from Hollywood and started an herb ranch in New Mexico.

Back in the late 90’s while I was still living in Florida, I found she had written a book. Not a book about acting, but rather a book about her personal and spiritual search for enlightenment. At the time, I was going through the same thing so her journey utterly enthralled me.

I know this may sound strange, but by reading her book I realized why I had admired her for so long. Not only for her talent, but more so because I saw that she and I came from the same place when it pertained to our spiritual search. I truly think that’s why I have always felt so attracted to her on the screen. I can feel HER.

In 2001, when I moved back to the north east, I went through some tremendous challenges. My life literally fell apart, only to later realize that my life was falling together. I was scared and lost, so for some reason I picked up Marsha Mason’s book and reread it. And I can’t tell you how much it helped me.

I then wrote her letter, not knowing if she would ever receive it or even respond. I mailed it to the publishers of the book and asked them to forward it to her. In the letter, I told her that I had admired her onscreen work for so long and was a huge fan. I also told her that I read her book and how much it had helped me through a very rough time in my life.

So, off I sent the letter, eventually forgetting about it.

However….

….six months later when I opened my mailbox, there sat a letter from MARSHA! MASON!

I could barely open the envelope without wanting to tear into it, but feared that I would accidentally tear the letter too. And when I finally flipped open the pink stationary and began to read her words, my eyes actually flooded with tears.

Earlier this week while I was cleaning out some old boxes, I stumbled upon the letter. I had placed it in a frame because I didn’t want to damage it. I scanned a copy, so I could share it with y’all.

Now I realize this may not be too terribly exciting for anyone who might not know of or admire her as much as I do, yet seeing this letter again made me believe that dreams CAN come true.

Thank you, Marsha Mason.

And I never got the chance to tell you this until I got online and started my own blog….

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my letter, because it touched me more than you’ll ever know.

Your continued adoring fan,
Ron

  1. Ron,

Thank you for sharing this story. I was so moved.
Yes, you were attracted to her for the feeling that she gave. It is like an aura that surround some people who have a particular gift or quality.

That is wonderful that she took some of her wisdom and shared it with you and everyone else who needed it, in a book. I love that letter!! The tone is friendly and personal. You are right to have framed it; it is precious.

Thank you for a wonderful post full of hope.

  2. Oh how marvellous that you got a reply. Keep it safe always. I remember Marsha Mason although I confess I didn't know her name until I read your post. I think I'll do a rerun of The Goodbye Girl. I'm really really glad you're not lost anymore ((Ron))... have a really splendid weekend.

I'm glad that her book touched you so much. AND that she responded to your letter. Very nice!

I liked her in Max Dugan Returns too. And probably some other stuff I'm not even remembering. The GG is classic. I really adore that one.

Have a happy weekend, Ron. xo

  7. Hey there Barbara~

"Yes, you were attracted to her for the feeling that she gave. It is like an aura that surround some people who have a particular gift or quality."

Yes, that's it exactly! From the moment I saw on her on the screen, I was instantly drawn to her. Not only her amazing talent, but HER.

The book she wrote is very much the tone of this letter. Personal, easy to read, approachable.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Always a joy to see ya!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

"Oh how marvellous that you got a reply."

Yippeeeeeeeeeeee! I was so happy to recieve this letter I jumped up and down like a little kid!

Yes, I have it safely framed and in a box. She wrote the letter with felt tipped pen, therefore it's faded a bit, so I try to keep it from the light.

Wasn't The Goodbye Girl such a wonderful film? She and Dreyfuss were perfect foils for one another. I adore anything written by Neil Simon. Brilliant writer, because he knows how to say what he wants to say without using too many words.

" I'm really really glad you're not lost anymore ((Ron))..."

HA! Well...I have to admit, I still DO let lost now and then. But I now have a strong spiritual base to help me along.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Always enjoyed!

    Have splendid weekend too!

Bwhahahahahahahahahahahaha! You GO, girl! Yes....you definately KNOW this film!

I can watch it over and over again, and still laugh. The ending is so touching. I cry every time!

You would love her book, I just know you would. I think you can still get it a B&N. If you're ever there one day, just pick it up and read a few chapters, it's wonderful.

"I liked her in Max Dugan Returns too."

    Yes....me tooooooo!

She's been in couple of movies as a character actress over the years, but still not as much as I would like. She played Judy Garland's mother in the Judy Davis movie of "Me And My Shadow." Brilliant!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, neighbor! Have a super weekend! I heard the weather is supposed to be cooler - yahoooo!

    *squealing*

Isn't it so stinkin' awesome??? I just about fainted when I got the letter.

"And how sweet of her to actually send you a hand written letter, I love that."

Me too! It made it all the more personal.

I think you would really enjoy her a work. She's very 'human' in her roles, so you quickly identify with her.

Yes, she started her own herb ranch and created her own line of skincare products with them. I think she has since sold the ranch, but her products are sill available online. They're great!

"...Just goes to show that awesome people feel and know the presence of other awesome people, and for that my awesome friend, I am grateful. ;o)"

  11. Hi Lady Dianne~

"I adore Marsha Mason and like you (of course) Only When I Laugh is my favorite"

Yahoooooooooooo! I had a strong feeling that you knew of and enjoyed her as much as I do. Only When I laugh is based on the Neil Simon play, The Gingerbread Lady. I saw the play in New York, but they changed the name for the movie. Also, used different actors.

I loved James Coco as her best friend. Sadly, that was his last movie.

"how nice to find out that she is exactly the type of person I thought she was."

Isn't that cool? I kinda had the same feeling.

OMG....thank you for telling me about the Anne Archer movie, because I've not heard of it. I will look for it when it comes out on DVD at the video store. I LOVE Anne Archer. She's so beautiful, talented, and sexy!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. Always enjoy sharing with you!

    Have a supa' weekend!

" I love her handwriting. You know what else? I see now that people have lost the art of letter writing. My friends and I always wrote letters! Email and texting...bah!"

You are soooooooooooo right. The art of letter writing is a LOST art. Because of emails and such, I've totally lost the ability to actually sit down and handwrite a letter.

I use to be very into writing letters. I use to use sealing wax and a seal with all my letters and cards!!!!

Thank you for stopping by, Katherine. Always so nice to see you!

    Enjoy your weekend!

"That's an incredible insight--I've got similar feelings myself right now so your observations are most appreciated."

The experience I went through back then was perhaps the scariest and most lost time in my life. I was completely out of control over what was happening to my life at the time. I discovered something very interesting....when I 'think' I'm the most powerless, is when I'm the most powerful.

I'm sure (you being a movie lover) know of Marsha Mason and her work. Isn't she a talented lady?

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a super weekend!

    It's good to be reminded.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady! Wishing you a faaaaaabulous weekend!

Yes, I am familiar with Marson Mason and really like her acting. I saw the movie you spoke of so very long ago, therefore I don't really remember the whole thing. I'll have to rent it again.

I knew you would be familiar with her, I just KNEW it! Isn't she a wonderful actress? And it's a damn same she's not often on the screen. I think she's done some theater, but not too much film in the past 5 years. I think after she and Neil Simon got divorced, she was kinda shunned from Hollywood. I believe I read that somewhere.

" did not change your blogspot address to see if this would click over from the reader and it did without a hitch! YAYAY :)"

  36. wow, what a treasure! that was lovely of her to write a personal note to you and I can tell from your words that it meant the world to you. I too hope that you have found the precious balance between daily activities that consume our time and your quest for growth, joy and peace. I think about this a lot. Our days are not given to us with a money back guarantee for us to return them and start over. The moments evaporate. But for some reason, the struggle I have with (a portion) of my faith still plagues me. It is as though I am trying to look through a very worn mirror to the other side. There are some spots where the reflective silver has scratched away and I can see the brilliance on the other side. And the beauty of the truth moves me to tears. But then in a split second I lose the thread and see only a blurry version of myself again.

where the hell did that come from?
what's the name of Marsha's book?

  39. Hey Diane~

Thank you sooooo much for sharing your feelings in this post, because they are SO enlightening and TRUE!

"Our days are not given to us with a money back guarantee for us to return them and start over. The moments evaporate."

You said it, girl! And having gone through what I experienced back then, that is something I have learned because the 'present moments' were all I had. Yet, I still struggle with it at times (living in and appreciating each moment) because often I get caught up in 'thinking' ahead.'

I just love how you expressed this...

"It is as though I am trying to look through a very worn mirror to the other side. There are some spots where the reflective silver has scratched away and I can see the brilliance on the other side. And the beauty of the truth moves me to tears. But then in a split second I lose the thread and see only a blurry version of myself again..

    How beautiful and honest!

I believe faith/growth is a process, therefore I think we all feel like that at times. I know I do.

If you click on the link 'book' it will take you to Marsha Mason's book, where you can read a brief overview. It's called, Journey, Personal Odyssey. I think you may enjoy it. It's very blunt and honest.

Again, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings on this post. You've added MUCH!

  41. I want to believe that dreams come true. I see what you mean by feeling scared. I get that feeling more than I'd like. I'll start looking for a new job soon and this scares me. I am afraid of rejection. Yet, shouldn't I face things from a hopeful, clean, neutral perspective? Don't I have things to offer? Difficult to be sure of yourself at times. But I want to. Your friendship in my life has helped me to feel better about me. Merci mon ami - thanks my friend!

I think we ALL feel that way. Even though I'm willing to take chances (make change) it still frightens me. However, fear is one of my lessons. I've known this since I was small child. Fear is my teacher.

"Yet, shouldn't I face things from a hopeful, clean, neutral perspective? Don't I have things to offer? Difficult to be sure of yourself at times. But I want to."

Yes, it IS difficult to be sure of ourselves at times. I doubt constantly, but I realize it's ME I'm doubting. My ability to perceive the guidance.

I've made some not-so-great choices in my life doubting myself, however they were all things I learned something from.

    The process continues.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and feelings on this post, beautiful lady. You've added much!

" had never written a letter to the authors that managed to inspire me, except you. ;) i supposed i always assumed that they will receive way too many letters to pay mine any attention. but from what we have read from your experience, i might be so wrong!"

Me too! This was the first time I EVER wrote a letter to a celebrity; not knowing if they would even return a response!?!

Yup...it made me a VERY happy person!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Have a great week!

  49. How nice and unHollywood of her to write you back. I loved her in Cinderella Liberty and The Goodbye Girl. You're so right, she is/was very underrated.

  50. Hey there Lady Nitebyrd~

"How nice and unHollywood of her to write you back."

I know, wasn't that VERY cool of her?

OMG...I LOVE Cinderella Liberty. She and Jimmy Caan were awesome! I think that was the film that made her famous.

She's sooooooo underrated. And what a shame.

    Thanks for stopping by, Sis!

    X ya!

  51. That is so amazing! I love hearing stories like that. It's so nice when someone you admire comes through. It's interesting how she did just kind of disappear from films. I think it's so wonderful that you let her know how much her book meant to you. It obviously touched her as well.

  52. Hey Jen~

"I love hearing stories like that. It's so nice when someone you admire comes through."

Isn't that amazing? Honestly, I was TOTALLY surprised that I got a response. And VERY happy!!!!

"It's interesting how she did just kind of disappear from films."

I think she went more into theater after she left film. I see here every once in a while in small character roles, but nothing like she was offered back in the 70's and 80's.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend! Always FAB seeing ya!

    Have a great day.....X
