Post updates by email:

As most of you ladies and gents already know from past posts, I have a few OCD tendencies.

Well, not exactly a few, it’s more like a few too many.

Today, I thought I’d share another one I’ve kept secretly hidden, until I realized that I’m not the only person who has this obsessive compulsion.

Wednesday evening, I was talking on the phone (for TWO hours) with my faaaaaabulous fellow blogger Chrissy @ I Shoulda Been A Stripper.

Throughout these past years, she and I have jokingly come to the conclusion that we were twins separated at birth because the two of us have so many similarities and idiosyncrasies to our personalities, it’s uncanny.

One being, that we love black jelly beans.

Two being, that we hate being hot and would much rather participate in the March Of The Penguins.

Three being, that we frivolously use the F-word when talking with one another.

And four being, that we share an OCD tendency to check and recheck our front doors to make sure they’re locked before going to bed at night.

Now I can only speak for myself, but I truly think I have a MAJOR issue with this.

Here’s how goes……

Before I brush my teeth at night, I will walk over to my apartment door and check to see if both locks are locked.

Then, after brushing my teeth I will go back and check the locks AGAIN.

Then, after getting in bed I will inevitably think to myself, “Oooops….did I check the locks to make sure they were locked?” So I’ll jump out of bed and triple check them.

Now what’s really weird about this is that I live in a high rise apartment building on a 20-something floor, and have a 24-hour security guard sitting in the lobby to make sure no one enters the building without being a resident or signing in as a guest.

So, I ask you…..what am I so concerned about even if I did forget to lock my door? It’s not like some ax murder could easily walk into my building, get into an elevator, come up to my apartment and CHOP me into pieces during my sleep, and then steal my precious troll doll collection and sell it on eBay.

And not only do I check to make sure the locks are locked before I go to bed, but whenever I leave for work in the morning after already locking my apartment door, I will walk over to the door while waiting for the elevator and check TWO or THREE times to make sure I locked them.

Sometimes even while walking to work, I’ll think to myself, “Holy shit…did I remember to lock the door before I left?” There have even been times when I walked all the way back to my apartment building to check them.

I kid you not!

So my question is…..what the HELL is wrong with me????

Oh wait, I think I just answered my own question.

That’s right……I’m OCD!

Have an awesome weekend everyone!

  1. Hi Ronnie and Hi Chrissy,

How interesting to have a friend with many similarities with you.
That is a hoot! And, I think that you are honest with yourselves to even share that OCD lock checking behavior.
Don't ya think that it is not the sort of thing that you share with everyone? People are quick to judge when they don't know you.

I honestly think that we are all OCD for one or more things and to various levels. I check the doors to every night; usually more than once. I also check the alarm to make sure that it is well set for the next work day. Go figure for the second one...

Modern life fills us with fear and anxiety. Maybe it is one way to cope and unless it gets to the point that it is debilitating, I would not worry excessively.

Happy weekend to ya dude. Have a good one! XO

  3. Mornin' Ron!

I love this post. It reminded me of once when my husband and I were on our way to Vegas. In the airplane and at altitude I began to wonder if I had turned off the oven (I had made cinnamon rolls) before we left home. I called my mother from the airplane and had her drive the thirty miles to my house to check the stove for me. Of course, it was off!

As for my locks... that is something I have never stressed over. I will frequently leave them unlocked while home alone and asleep. Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but I live in the country and never have felt threatened.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Ron!

    XOXO

  4. Black jelly beans!!!!!!!

    :-)

    Man after my own heart......*sigh*
You can have my share of course--*muttering* Stupid gluten stuff........ RAWR

And I had to chuckle when I read the OCD tendencies.
I shared space with a gal who was horribly OCD--and I dare say, I had great fun with it.

Pillows. She was obsessed with making sure the pillows on the couch were fluffed up, facing a certain angle and straight. I watched her straighten the darn things day after day after day. Same deal with 'stuff' on her dresser, stuff on countertops, stuff on shelves.......

I was helpful with the 'disorder'.
I'd shift things a bit to the left. *snickering* And then I'd watch as she'd pass the shelf/pillow/countertop, back up and eyeball it, reach over and put it back in it's precious little OCD spot.
And then one day I had an epiphany. I let her exit the house two steps before me ....I wished her a good day and flicked that precious little OCD pillow over and off the couch and watched her scramble with her little panicked eyes darting and the wheels in her brain turning at warp speed......as I promptly locked the front door. ROFL

And then, cuz I'm suchhhhhh a caring person, I rang her at her workplace and told her how sorry I was for being mean and flicking that cute little pillow over on it's side and off the couch to the floor---ohhhhhh...... I'd say it was 'bout half way into the day, just for good measure.....

Boy could she string those naughty words together in rapid succession!

    :-)

    It's a small wonder I'm alive today, huh? :-/

  5. You know I hate to put this thought in your head, but couldn't one of your neighbors be an ax murderer? So they wouldn't necessarily need to walk past the doorman.

As scary as the guy who steals the keys out of my door in the middle of the night, goes to an all night locksmith, duplicates the key and then brings it back and puts it in the door so I never suspect a thing.

I need that mug! I need that mug! I need that mug!

    Have a great Friday! xoxo

  6. No wonder we get along so well. I'm so OCD. Let's just say medication can help. Locks and stove burners are my things. Plus, I have to make sure the dogs are ok and where they're supposed to be. You are not alone.

  7. Ron - Did you remember to lock your door? :-)

I'm obsessive about locking my car door. I've been known to walk the entire way back to the parking lot to check.

At home, not so much. I always wonder if one day I'll go down into the basement to find someone living there amongst the massive number of cardboard boxes. There are so many empty boxes in my basement that it could be a serious shanty-town. Don't let the word out!

    Have a GREAT weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  8. You have a troll doll collection? I'll let you know if I find one!

I think the 'gotta check, double-check and triple check the locks' thing is pretty common. I notice I get worse at this kind of thing the more anxious I am. So if I have a very important appointment, or I'm travelling to a new country, for instance, I'll do a circuit of the house checking the plugs and switches about twenty times - yeah, I'm not so hot on the locks, but for me it's electrical stuff.

Doesn't help that we live in a house which was 'fixed up' by a lunatic and totally incompetent 'Do It Yourself-er'. The only consolation is that the fuse panel is trigger-happy, and it's on a hair trigger (if it's possible to have both those things at the same time) so the lights often go 'POP' and plunge us into darkness due to surges from the grid. Oh, yeah, and the alarm system sometimes has a fit and sounds the fire alarm when the phone blinks out for a second. For nothing. As it does. *Sigh*

So maybe mine isn't so much OCD as plain nervousness! LOL!

  9. 'It’s not like some ax murder could easily walk into my building, get into an elevator, come up to my apartment and CHOP me into pieces during my sleep'

You never know, Ron! Heeheehee! Have you checked the guard's credentials lately?

You and Chrissy are not alone, I know several people, including myself, who double and treble check their doors. My fetish though is to keep checking the car door. Are we all insecure, do you think, or merely anti-social? Think about it! Whatever, it doesn't do to get too lax with these matters. Just make sure you're clean and respectable, just in case. Have a stupendous weekend.

  10. Ha, I used to do that and I was exhausted by the time I reached the bed. Now, I check once...that's it, maybe that's why I don't sleep as well now!

  11. I do the same thing! Although with many more doors. Also, did I turn the iron off?, did the dryer shut off?, do the dogs have water? Mornings are exhausting!

Glad to know that there are so many more crazies out there!

  12. Bonjour Barbara~

Chrissy is a HOOT, you would LOVE her! And it's so nice to know that I'm not the only one who has this OCD tendency.

"I honestly think that we are all OCD for one or more things and to various levels. I check the doors to every night; usually more than once. I also check the alarm to make sure that it is well set for the next work day. Go figure for the second one..."

OMG, Barb. I DO THE SAME THING WITH MY ALARM CLOCK - I SWARE! I'm so scared that I forgot to turn it on and that I'll wake up late. And you're right....I think we ALL in some way are OCD.....just in different ways.

"Modern life fills us with fear and anxiety. Maybe it is one way to cope and unless it gets to the point that it is debilitating, I would not worry excessively."

No, I'm not actually really worried about it, I just think it's HYSTERICAL!!!!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a awesome weekend and enjoy your blogging break!

It's ironic that you mentioned the 'stove burner' because I'm that way too. And even though I have electric and not gas, I still worry that I left one of the burners on and it will eventually cause my apartment to catch fire.

Nice to know I'm not alone!

Thanks for stopping by, Jen! Have a wonderful weekend.

And don't forget to check your stove burners - HA!

  16. Oh, my God, Ron, I do the same exact thing!! I lock my front door every morning, go to the backyard to make sure all the windows are closed, then I go back and check the front door again--and still I'll turn around and walk back to my house to check it one more time. My neighbors must get a kick out of watching me go back and forth like a duck in a shooting gallery! Terrific post! OCD is A-OKAY!

" I called my mother from the airplane and had her drive the thirty miles to my house to check the stove for me. Of course, it was off!"

Bwhahahahahahahhhahaha! OMG...that's HILARIOUS!!!! But I can so relate because that's something "I" would have done!

"As for my locks... that is something I have never stressed over. I will frequently leave them unlocked while home alone and asleep. Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but I live in the country and never have felt threatened."

Yup, my mother was the same way when we were kids - she NEVER worried about locking the front door to the house. Now my FATHER was a different story, he worried about it constantly.

Hey, I just realized something....perhaps I got this OCD tendency from him - HA!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend too, girl! And thank you for stopping by!

Bwhahahahahhhahahahaha! OMG, when you told me that on the phone the other night, I just about DIED of laughter!!! But hey, that would make for a great thriller movie!

Isn't the mug faaaaaaaaaaaabulous? I found it last night while googling OCD. It's a Zazzle creation.

"I'm obsessive about locking my car door. I've been known to walk the entire way back to the parking lot to check."

Funny you mentioned that because I use to be the same way when I had a car. Not only did I worry about locking the car doors, but I also worried about locking the keys INSIDE the car (which I use to do constantly).

"I always wonder if one day I'll go down into the basement to find someone living there amongst the massive number of cardboard boxes. There are so many empty boxes in my basement that it could be a serious shanty-town. Don't let the word out!'

  21. My biggest OCD thing is making sure the cats are OK before I leave the house
ever since my dear old love of my life JR was accidently left in the linen closet all day I have a fear of that happening again
it was teenage son by the way who did it and it was 20 years ago but it stays with me

if I don't see Siren and Isadora right before I close the door I will do a patrol until I do
if I open and close a closet in searching for them I will then need to find them again

I think they know about this and hide together laughing their asses off as I open and close closet doors

I've never been too concerned about locking doors even when I lived in an awful neighborhood
brazen craziness is one of my ills
when I moved to NJ I got even more lax until the ex-cop neighbor asked me - "Di!, do you think we're in fucking Kansas?"

Hope sends hugs and suggests you check the locks

  22. Hey Jay~

"You have a troll doll collection? I'll let you know if I find one!"

Yup...I have an awesome troll doll collection. In fact, one of my longtime blogging friends sent me one few years ago. I actually did a You Tube video on the troll last year. I named her Nikki. She's dressed as a cheerleader, but at night she's a stipper in few of the night clubs here - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAA!

"I notice I get worse at this kind of thing the more anxious I am. Ironic you shared that because when I went to live in Japan for two months, right before I left my apartment I did the same thing. I was so worried I would leave the stove on, the water running, and the doors unlocked.

Gee...I wonder if it could be a LIBRA thing? Ya, think? HA!

"So maybe mine isn't so much OCD as plain nervousness! LOL!"

I must say that when Mo is away, I go and lock the doors in the evening and that's it. I never re-check them. I have been known to go to bed leaving the back door unlocked.

It's possibly because, my parents, who lived on a main road, were broken into in the middle of the afternoon. They gained access by axing the front door down! All the locks in the world wouldn't have helped. Anyone who would have seen it would assume they were workmen I suspect.

  35. WooHoo! Glad to hear I'm not the only one who does these sorts of things. Every night I have to check the alarm clocks at *least* three times before I go to bed. Thanks a bunch for stopping by, buddy. Have an AWESOME weekend and don't forget to check your alarm clock before you go to bed tonight - *wink*

X to you and the family!

  37. I think that we all have some OCD in us... if it stays under the good limits, then let's "obsess on". I love all all, I said AAALLLL black candy! Let's share some one day;)

  38. Ron, maybe you need to eat a 7-11 Kush Cake before you go to bed? Perhaps you won't feel the need to check the locks. Instead, will feel the need to put on some Pink Floyd and eat potato chips!

Seriously though... have you ever fought the urge and MADE yourself not check them once you are in bed? Or is the urge too strong, keeping you from sleeping?

I have my own little things too... I think everyone does. Of course in my house, if anyone stepped in the door they would step right on out... "Oh, this place has NOTHIN'... let's move on!"

  39. i only check the locks twice, once i'm in bed, that's it. i try not to get up. it doesn't hurt to check though, what if someone takes out the security guard down stairs...hahahah. just kidding.

    you're safe.

i like black jelly beans too.

I agree, I think we ALL have some OCD in some way. And you're right, if it stays under the good limits, then let's "obess on." HA! I love how you said that!

"I love all all, I said AAALLLL black candy! Let's share some one day;)"

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Another black licorice lover! There's not too many of us out there. But hey, that means MORE black jelly beans for us!

BWhahahahahahahahahahahaha! OMG, I just SPEWED my morning coffe while reading that. HILARIOUS!!!!!!! And I may have to try that *wink*

"Seriously though... have you ever fought the urge and MADE yourself not check them once you are in bed? Or is the urge too strong, keeping you from sleeping?"

Yes, I have. And there has been times when I was just too tired to care whether the damn door was locked - HA!

"Of course in my house, if anyone stepped in the door they would step right on out... "Oh, this place has NOTHIN'... let's move on!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, other than my precious troll doll collection and my laptop, there's not too much steal.

Thanks for stopping by and for giving me a great morning laugh! Have a terrific weekend, dear lady!

  42. Hey V~

"i only check the locks twice, once i'm in bed, that's it."

Great! That means you're only partially OCD because REAL OCD is checking THREE times - HA!

"it doesn't hurt to check though, what if someone takes out the security guard down stairs...hahahah. just kidding."

THANK YOU for sharing that because now I'll have a whole NEW OCD tendency to worry about!

    Bwhahahahahahahahahaha!

And you like black jelly beans too? You GO, girl! We are totally in minority when it comes to them because most people hate them.

    More for us, though!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, V girl! Have a wonderful weekend!

  43. Ever since I left the garage door open all day while I was at work, I'm obsessive about making sure it's closed. So I pull out into the driveway, press the automatic closer button, put on my seat belt and then sit until I know it's down. Then I say ALOUD "The door is down." It's this little verbal confirmation that I remember doing more than I remember putting the door down. Does that make sense?

On the rare days when I'm in a hurry and I don't make the verbal confirmation, I've been known to drive two blocks, then turn around and go back to check again. It's a PITA, but then I know no one will get in the house and steal my cats. Yes, that's what I think they would steal. They'd leave the 52" HDTV, but take my cats. Now how stupid is that?

It's getting a little less hot now, Ron! How happy are WE???

  44. Hey there Kathy~

"Then I say ALOUD "The door is down." It's this little verbal confirmation that I remember doing more than I remember putting the door down. Does that make sense?"

Bwhahahahahahahahahaha! HILARIOUS! And yes, that makes PERFECT sense to me because I talk to myself too and say, "Did I remember to lock the door? Yes, you did."

"It's a PITA, but then I know no one will get in the house and steal my cats. Yes, that's what I think they would steal. They'd leave the 52" HDTV, but take my cats. Now how stupid is that?"

Not stupid at all. What's stupid is ME worrying about them stealing my TROLL DOLL collection - HA!

    "How happy are WE???"

    VERY OCD happy!

    OCD'ers UNITE!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Kath! Great seeing ya. Have a super Sunday!

  45. Oh yes. You definitely have OCD! I can't believe you walked all the way BACK home to check your locks AGAIN, on your way to work! Good thing you can laugh about it!

  46. Ron, I share your OCD tendencies too. My personal problem is making sure the garage door is shut. When I leave, I have to check it in my rearview mirror. If I forget to do that, I will circle back to check. I also open the door to the garage about 3X per night to check to make sure it's shut before I go to bed. Fortunately, my spouse just watches me do it, but doesn't comment!

See! I knew it! I knew I was not the only one with OCD!!!!!

And I'll tell ya, if I still had a car I bet I would be the same way about the garage door!

No...I WOULD be the same way about the garage door - HA!

  51. OMG, I'm so behind in visiting... sorry!!

I don't have total every day OCD but I do have it some days. I check the stove, even if I haven't cooked anything. I check the back door and the front door and double and triple click the electronic car thingy. And sometimes I'm weird about numbers. Like if I'm drinking some water before bed, I'll count the sips. Some numbers are better than others. LOL Yeah, let's not even go there....

  52. Hey there Crystal Chick~

Thanks so much for stopping by today, M! Hope you're having a great week, and survived the earthquake. OMG...I felt it here in Philly!
